There's some incredibly oblivious, or just beyond indoctrinated, people posting here. Seriously, look at these comments, people are saying that if this was a Democrat there would have been no media coverage.
Do you remember Spitzer? He got tons of coverage. He actually resigned. And his indiscretions didn't even interfere with his duties.
Honestly, this guy had better quit or be forced out, since he supported the impeachment of Clinton when he was in office. Plus, how many South Carolinians go run off to Argentina and tell no one, and keep their job? During the middle of something important?
The dereliction of duty and hypocrisy are really a lot worse than the affair, at least in a political sense.
Of course, he mentioned God enough that he will instantly be forgiven by those who would have crucified Clinton. But he's obviously not going to be nominated for anything.
Also, what kind of idiot runs off for days in the middle of something important without anything approaching a credible excuse? He was asking to be caught.
The media is incredibly kind to Republicans. With all the massive corruption in the Bush administration, they only really seriously reported the Valerie Plame case. And they still gave him a huge pass on the commutation of Scooter Libby's sentence (which was unabashed cronyism and support of criminal actions). How much did they say about Cheney's profiteering off of Texas prison abuse?
One problem is this idea of presenting the Democratic side and Republican side as equally valid. Beyond how badly it is done, it is a poor system. A Republican politician's assertion that manmade climate change isn't happening or that waterboarding isn't torture is utterly irrelevant in the face of actual authoritative input from qualified experts (which goes overwhelmingly against both positions). But the standard practice seems to be to get "both sides" in a room and have them argue without any factual basis for their arguments.
Fox News, in it's wisdom, of course decided to mark Sanford as a (D) on their headline once he admitted to the affair.

This story is going to last for a while. The polls showing that Americans are starting to lean more conservative will be under attack. Sanford will be headline news on all news channels. They will make sure to say that he is a conservative republican gov. They are going to call conservatives hypocrites. Sanford may be partially fiscally conservative, but he is not socially conservative.
The media will accept Democrats for affiars because they have very few moral standards. They make it news..do not report that it is a democrat most of the time. They just give a name. This one will be "conservative republican"

They both lied about their affairs until it became impossible to keep lying. Sanford insisted he was hiking, first his office said on the Appalachian Trail, then he said in Argentina, and he that he was shocked that anyone would think his absence was newsworthy. Eventually it all falls apart.

First, I think there is more to the story than being told. Just seems odd.

Washington Governor, Christine Gregoire, did the same thing a few months ago. Just flat-out disappeared. Her staff even lied to the press about it when they asked. Ended up she made a trip to Iraq.

Gov. Sanford needed a break from all of the hell and discontent caused by the stimulus money, plus the fact that Congressman Clyburn put that little tidbit in the stimlus bill, it would want to make a sane man pull his hair out. Unless there was a hurricane coming, it's extremely unlikely that South Carolina would suddenly have a statewide emergency or need to call out the National Guard. Myrtle Beach isn't exactly high on the list for terrorist attacks. I don't know what the story is with Mark Sanford, but this worrying about him leaving the state leaderless is ridiculous. While a state governor is important, he's not the president. South Carolina wouldn't have noticed his absence if democrats weren't so eager to puff this up.

Maybe the Governor had some sort of mental breakdown. I have seen him on Fox News shows discussing the stimulus package; he seems intelligent. I feel for him and his family. Governor's Responsibilities
Only the governor of a state can mobilize the state's National Guard units. Only the governor of state can declare a state of emergency. Sanford didn't delegate his authority as would have been the responsible thing to do. Furthermore, not only did he leave the state, but he left the country with no way of reaching him. Democrat or Republican, that's inexcusable.

If it's really so durn important and he's really "not going to be available" for a few days, he should turn his powers over to the Lt. I bet he had some long-lost extremely wealthy relatives that died and left him a lot of money, and was just going to sign the papers to claim his check. Same thing happened to me, except mine lived in Africa. I had to take out a $40k loan on my house and wire it there to cover the customs fees and other stuff, but it will be SWEEET when I can install that Jacuzzi in my living room and ride around in my Bentley.
