WHAT TO DO ABOUT NORTH KOREA

While we are on the subject of loony dictators, let's talk about North Korea.  Last week, the UN drafted up harsher sanctions against North Korea in the wake of its latest missile launch.  As a result, North Korea says that it plans to "weaponize" all of its plutonium.  By the way, it has enough plutonium to make at least half a dozen atomic bombs.  Not only that, but the Foreign Ministry of North Korea threatened any country that stopped its ships on the high seas, which is part of the latest UN sanctions.

Tough spot.  I'm not pleased with the man we have in office who's job it is to deal with this mess ... but I am empathetic.  There are some tough decisions to be made in the coming weeks and months.  Those decisions will either strengthen or weaken our country.  The world wants a weaker America.  Let's hope Barack Obama soon remembers that he's the President of the United States first, and a citizen of the world second.

What others are saying

  • Plenty of blame to go around
"Amazing that the only mention of Bush in here is how "spot-on" he was labeling "these countries" and the only blame in here is directed @ Democrats."

I have to agree somewhat. Bush did have some effective sanctions in his first term, especially when we froze the Norks out of the international banking system ( http://freekorea.us/2008/01/22/plan-b-how-to-disarm-kim-jong-il-without-bombing-him/ ). But the last couple of years under Bush were more feeble attempts to play nice, and we, to paraphrase something that has been said before, keep letting the Norks sell us the same cow over and over.

The Norks use the aid we give them to feed their Army and the Party leadership, and they use the savings to fund weapons programs. Our NK policy has been truly idiotic.
  • North Korean nukes
At the risk of sounding like a lib, who are we to tell any country what type of weapons they can develop to protect themselves? Since we can't do anything about it anyway, we just need to let the gargoyle know that if he, or some islamofacist uses a North Korean nuke, we will take him out. Then we should all pray the generals are saner than he is.
  • re: Is "Axis of Evil," starting to make sense?
Love the straw man argument, Cowboy. Name one. Name one of these so called smart people who laughed at Bush when he came up with the Axis of Evil.
  • Quote
"The course of action I suggest is a course of action I can't suggest" - President from the movie "A Clear and Present Danger".
    Pretty much sums it up.
  • Is "Axis of Evil," starting to make sense?
It seems like only yesterday the 'smart' people were laughing at President Bush's characterization and telling us they had nothing in common. It didn't take President Bush to point out the obvious to some.
  • box of rocks
Amazing that the only mention of Bush in here is how "spot-on" he was labeling "these countries" and the only blame in here is directed @ Democrats. I especially like the drivel about how Obama loves the US being weakened since he is the one who weakened us. Ignorance is bliss so you people must be overjoyed.

Sleep well, dummies, another Replican will come along promising to get back to basics and you will all fall for it since the world's problems are caused by Democrats.

    Bunch of suckers.
  • north korean nutbag.......................
ok let me ax you a question.

what would harry t. or dougy mac do? hell even ronny r. knew what to do.

osamabama has to ax he imam at next prayer meeting. hey thats now!
  • North Korea
Do you really think Obama is going to do anything about NK? Hardly - He loves the fact that we are weakened. Considering he is the one behind us being weakened on the world stage..
  • The only way to influence the Nork's
The only leverage is through China. We must insist that they reign in their crazy step-child.
Consider that North Korea is well along into a nuclear weapons program, along with some dubious missile technology. Why? They have only two neighbors. China, which is their benefactor. And South Korea. The South Koreans are their countrymen, as much as 60 years of separation has pulled them apart, the speak the same language and have the same heritage. I would still bet donuts to dimes on a Korean reunification (capitalist, not communist) rather than a Korean War.
  • Tough one
This all depends on just how looney he is, for real psycho, not just our idea of he hates us. The only person who MIGHT reign him in (if China can't) is his son. At least with Iran, we have the mullahs.
  • Long Conflict That Never Ended
How many of us forget that the UN only has a truce with North Korea that has been in place since 1953.
  • N Korea
President God will defer to the United Nations, again and again, to decide what to do (if anything) about North Korea's nukes. That way, when Tokyo is reduced to a smoldering mound of burnt sushi and melting cameras, President God won't have to admit having any real responsibility for anything. Remember, He can't be allowed to fail.
  • thanks Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter
Well leftists, "There you go again," with being weak in the 1990's with North Korea. Going and tell them that they can have their reactors if they promise not to build bombs was weak. Furthermore, you didn't "trust but verify". Peace through strength always works. It did in the 1980's if you remember. What we're seeing here is a repeat of the late 1970's with horrible US leadership. But like they say today, this is "Change we can believe in."
  • Ahmadinjad lite
They North Koreans know the West is undergoing 'Change' and they're expoloiting it to the max. Of course, it didn't start with Obama. In all fairness, but it won't end there either. Pandora's box is wide open and we're stuck with these A'holes for another generation or so. Unless...we can get James Bond( the new, remorseless version, not the effeminate, metrosexual one...)to sneak in and smoke the 'Il Man'. Ain't holdin' my breath. Let's see what the 'Rookie' can do. Maybe Hillary Clinton will be enough to make Kim Jong Il cry Uncle, or whatever he would cry.
  • North Korea & Iran
Will someone in the mainstream media ever have the cajones to admit how spot-on Bush was in labeling these countries as he did in 2002? I won't be holding my breath.
  • Not to bring up old news
Isn't this just a repeat of the Clinton Presidency with Iraq? Does this mean in another 8 years we will be pouring in the troops to clean up another mess?
  • Iran will be next
We are following the exact same path with Iran that we did with North Korea. In 10 - 20 years, we will be asking the same questions about Iran... What do we do

Remember, history repeats itself, especially if we don't learn from it. It's hard to do anything once they have the technology. It's easier to deal with before they get it. According to the new administration, Iran has a right to it (for nuclear power). That's what we said about North Korea. Where did that take us?
