THE TRUTH ABOUT ELECTRIC CARS

Back in February, the White House passed its stimulus plan with the promise of tax breaks for people who purchase electric cars. However, the latest study from the Government Accountability Office says that electric cars will not by itself decrease any greenhouse gas emissions.

The reason is obvious ... it takes power to plug-in and charge an electric vehicle, and where does much of our country get its power? Coal. The study shows that "if plug-in hybrids reached 56 percent of the cars on the road by 2030, they would require an increased electricity production, much of which would likely come from additional coal plants."

Actually ... they have it wrong. Any ObamaBot can tell you that the power to charge up the batteries in electric cars will come from those windmills the government is going to put on the roof of your houses. If you have houses.

What others are saying

  • Electric Cars
Actually, windmills on Teddy Kennedy's house !
  • plug-ins
Thanks to the Crap and Trade Tax, it's going to end up costing just as much or more per month on your power bill with an electric car than what you'd spend on gas (well, gas prices pre-cap and trade)!!!
  • Where does it come from
I continue to ask - where does elctricity come from?
Where does it come from when there is no wind or sun?
    Electric cars need electricity.

Did you know the propsed smart national electric grid will curtail the consumer to match the supply.
Wind stops consumption is shut off.
Today they modulate the generation to match the consumption.

So on the day you are curtailed by that IBM smart meter you need to charge your car - what you do?
On the way some place and your battery goes dead - no jumping this vehicle or putting some fuel in it.
Dead is dead and a fuel driven tow truck will have to come get you.
  • Basically
We should be doing two things:

    1. Drill here, drill now and keep it here! No more buying from the Middle East. Release the reserves we have now, replenish with the drill here oil as it comes in.

    AT THE SAME TIME:

    2. Private enterprise (like the IBM battery I mentioned) work on alternative means of energy.

What is wrong with doing both? It's going to take a while to get alternatives up and running, give us a break now! Think of the jobs that could be created immediately on drilling and building refineries!

Why do we have to make this so complicated?
  • Cities with electric buses...
Yes, I live to drive through cities that use "electric" buses, like Watertown, Ma. They "beautify" the city by putting up this crazy grid of wires carrying high-voltage electricity, and advertize how "environmentally friendly" the town is. Doesn't anyone ever ask where that electricity comes from? And, how we just burn the fuel in a different part of the state to get that bus to go?
  • Lets see it pull a trailer.
Next I'd like to see what it does with my mobile toolbox in it. 0-35 in 10 minutes, don't even think about trying that hill. It looks like a great way to get run over in Atlanta traffic, I’ll pass.

Just think, the money wasted on these things is putting off the day that we develop one that isn't a useless and wasteful joke. It’s another clue the environment isn’t one of these folks’ top concerns.

Compare one of these beer cans to a Corvair, and you have to wonder why ralph nader hasn't had a stroke by now, or at least run a bunch of cars (not just electric ones either) off the road. Funny how ralph never has to explain the rather abrupt drop in his value of human life. I bet the roll he banked on it is a sweet one, though.
  • all my eggs in one..........................................
there's 'lectricity in my walls???? if I can figger out how the git it inna jug I'm gonna sell it.....

once again I see that tunnel vision is catchy.

wind, solar, geothermal, new-kew-ler, hydro, oil/coal fired power plants all must be used.

solar power in the desert? what a krazy idea. wind mills in the windy city wow.

com'on guys we know that you put things where they do the most good. grave yards for politicians, rivers for power dams, so as private citizens we should support all these lil' bizzniss's and cut the oil umbilicle(sic) off.

the point I'm trying to make is BIG PICTURE.
  • Electric Cars
I am all for electric cars and will be glad when there are truely viable cars available. Why? because it means we have less reliance on foreign oil and "defending our national interests" no longer means being involved with middle east conflicts.
  • Wow Burley hyperbole much?
    1. Nuclear Power is good and could also be used in desalination to help with the west coasts water shortage.
    2. Screw being green, the biggest reason for electric cars is to stop giving the Russians and Saudi's all our money.
    3. When buying my last car I tried to justify buying the Tesla Roadster, basically in order for it to be equivalent to the Corolla I bought gas would need to be $12 a gallon. The model S would need to be about $6. If I was driving a base model BMW or Audi, the model S is cheaper to own. But my Corolla is still a lot cheaper than any of them.
4.I don't know about other electrics and hybrids, but when it comes to Tesla the cost of recycling the battery is factored into the price of the car. They designed the batteries to be 100% or nearly 100% recyclable.
    5. Electric cars are daily commuters. If you were to drive across country you would use the SUV you would still own.
    6. The Tesla Model S has hot swappable batteries, so in the future you could pull into a station and refuel in seconds, you could even trailer extra batteries if you were really intent on doing a cross country trip. You could also just take your time and plan for 300 miles then a 45 min break for meals or leisure. You could also rent a motor home for such a long drive, or better yet fly.
  • Silly Silly Silly
The power doesn't come from the windmill, it comes from the wall.

    (haven't you heard this one?)
  • re:"Better American coal than Arab oil"
    Bob, what about American OIL???!!!!
Tell the libs to get out of the way! We have plenty of oil. Why force the economy in a direction that is NOT necessary?? I'm willing to bet that the first group of politicians with the guts to move toward opening American oil reserves will be touted as TOTAL HEROS because the effect on the economy will be immediate and positive. Imagine the cost of everything coming down. Imagine telling OPEC to get bent!
Tell you congressman to run over the tree-hugging liberals and get to the oil fields!!!!!!!! American Nuclear would not be a terrible idea either.
  • All this "green" energy claptrap
First of all, the libs hate nuclear power because it WILL bring independence. Question:What do the Democrats/Liberals fear more than anything? Answer:Independent people!
With that little truth established, electric cars are perfect for them because they are slow and short ranged. so, NO there won't be any quick and easy way to get one across the country. That would imply independence and again, libs fear independence. "Transportation Luddite" is an oxymoron. Someone who insists that a fossil-fueled internal combustion engine powered vehicle is superior to a battery powered one is NOT a Luddite. We just want to get where we're going and that should be anywhere we want to go!!! Modern gasoline powered automobiles are cleaner than modern coal-fired electric plants. Another hole in the "green" logic. Folks, get it through your heads!!! Dems/libs DO NOT CARE about helping you in any WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM!!!! They will however help THEMSELVES to your money. Facts and logic MEAN NOTHING to a lib. You're evil if you can't see the wisdom of an all-powerful government run by people who deny GOD. At least that's what the dems/libs think. They believe that GOD made a mistake when he gave us free will and work very hard to correct that. The sooner we morons can understand that and lay down our will to their superior intellect, the sooner we will all be happy! It's time to tell all the unhappy little children in the liberal world to sit down and shut up. The grown-ups need to get back in charge before we are all equally poor.(which is the ONLY logical outcome to any form of socialism or communism)
  • electric cars
A relative of mine who owns a golf course leases his golf cart fleet. One year he decided to lease electric carts instead of the usual gasoline-powered carts. He found that the cost of electricity to charge them was 3x the cost of fuel for the gasoline powered fleet. Gas at the time was around 1.35/gal, so I reckon that gasoline would have to be a least $4/gal for electric vehicles to make sense economically.
  • Better American coal than Arab oil
I could care less about the "Global Warming" aspects of driving an electric car. What I do care about is cutting our dependence on foreign oil and electric cars that are fueled by coal fired electric plants will be one step to making that happen..
  • Cost Per Mile
I would be curious about the cost per mile to operate electric/hybrid cars compared to a regular car (cost of the car, maintenance, fuel cost).

I nave not found anything about the cost of the electricity to run the cars.
  • The way liberals...
will explain this away is through carbon credits/offsets which is completely asinine. They will say that clean energy offsets the "dirty" energy from coal.
  • Electric Cars
Let's see, Toyota offers $200 for used Prius batteries so they can recycle them. (That's a trend that is not likely to cease!) Electric cars help keep pollution from being concentrated in populous areas. There are other ways to generate power than coal... What else do we have to rebut to help the transportation luddites wake up to fact that we live in a changing world?
  • WHAT-IF.......................
you wanted to drive across the country in one of these electric cars? Are there places to stop to plug in, is it going to cost you to do so, if so how much, how long will it take to charge before you can go on.
  • BoortzBots
i thought we were going into electric cars to break the pocket books of the arab shieks who don't like us?
  • Alternate Energy
I hate how the Liberals are afraid to look at nuclear energy.
  • Electric cars
Land fill my ass, that is Hazmat & controlled by EPA. Wait till you see the "disposal fee" when you try to get rid of the batteries or the car. It will be like the Clap, a gift that keeps giving
  • IBM
IBM is close to releasing their 300 and 500 mile battery. They've been working on this for many years. Long BEFORE this current "the earth is dying" crap. And all private enterprise!

    Amazing!
  • Windmills
Most cities I have checked do not allow the erection of wind towers within city limits. Our electric company erected a 100 foot tall windmill several years ago as an experiment. I talked to the city engineer and he told me on a good day, the windmill could almost light a 65w light bulb. Hell, our city has severe penalties if you put your satellite dish on your roof in the wrong place
  • Wind could power the earth
Not that I believe this, but here's a study that claims we could power everything (100% of the world) with wind power.

  • the obamatrons have no ability to think any further than the next campaign slogan. The electric car is the greatest evidence of the lack of critical thinking that pervades most of liberal culture.
  • @Bill
Tesla Motors batteries are 100% recyclable and the cost of recycling is in the price of the car. The company recycles the batteries for you at the end of life.
  • Vandals
I can just see thousands of juveniles going around the neighborhood at 10p and unplugging all of these cars so the battery is not charged in the morning. Either that, or they will cut the umbilical charging cord. They ought to run $100 to replace every few weeks.
  • Not quite that simple...
Currently I'm driving a 2009 Toyota Corolla. It cost me $18000. Per dollar and per mile I can't find a greener car. Hybrids are all hype, it costs more money and has different effects on the environment to drive a hybrid. However my Corolla gets 32MPG and I drive it with a lead foot. When gas was $5 I drove like a granny and got over 40MPG.

My next car will be either the Tesla Model S at $50,000; however they are in the process of producing a $30,000 car for their next generation pure electric.

What Neal is missing with electric cars is that you can (and I will be) use a small array of solar panels to charge your car. There is this neat technology out of MIT that allows you to use the solar power generated during the day and store it as hydrogen.

    http://web.mit.edu/newsoffice/2008/oxygen-0731.html

The people who have bought Tesla's so far have the capital to power them purely from solar power. Granted the masses won't be able to afford it any time soon, but for early technology adopters this is nothing new.

It just shouldn't be subsidized by the government. So in summary electric vehicles = good. Government funding = bad.
  • Don't foget to mention...............
batteries, there are going to hundreds of thousands of batteries manufactured. As you know, these batteries don’t last forever, so the discarded ones have to go some where……….landfills! Yep, these “GREEN” cars are really going to be the answer.
