What was the point in pulling a gun on this theif, if the clerk ends up giving the criminal money any way? He should have held him at gun point until the cops arrived. He'll just rob somebody else, again.

If given the chance that thief would have beat that clerk to death with that bat without remorse. I doubt there would have been any mercy on the robber's part. Just pure hate.
Good idea not to shoot
Actually, it was quite smart not to shoot. The local police dept or Sherriff's dept would have shook the store owner down for money. First, they'd confiscate the gun and make him pay to get it back. Then, they'd charge him with some misdemeanor and make him pay court costs and fines to get out of it.
It's sad this happens to gun owners, but sometimes the criminals have more rights. Deterring a potential attack is the best thing a gun could be used for

Saving the taxpayers some money
Hopefully we have figured out a tax free solution to reform. If the perpetrator tries again, then he should be shot. {I would have had no objections to him being shot, but in this guys state, that could have been a problem because of balance of power rules}. Owner was smart, less lawyers this way.

Who knows if the thief will be back, but he'll tell his buddies how he made $40 dollars. When I worked at a county jail, I witnessed a lot of inmates (especially repeat offenders) declare themselves to be in God's hands, even though their recidivism had nothing to do with religion. They wanted to do anything but take responsibility for their actions. Same thing with the thug in the video who should have gotten a felony for attempted robbery with a weapon.

Praying is about all you can do when you're staring down the buisiness end of a 12 guage held by someone you just threatened with a deadly weapon to rob. I hope he felt the Hand of God there that day and heeds it, and I hope he is blessed for doing so. First he needs to pay his debt to society and the man that spared his life.

If this is the same incident I read about in the news, you're forgetting the part where the store clerk converted the robber to Islam.
So the next time he enters a convenience store it will be with a bomb instead of a bat.
