OBAMA ENTERS THE HEALTHCARE DEBATE

For months, Barack Obama has pushed the issue of healthcare reform on the Congress. Yesterday he cranked up the rhetoric a bit. He sent a letter to Max Baucus and others involved in the creation of this behemoth of a government growth bill. Here are a few things that he wants to see done.

First, he wants at least $200 billion cut from Medicare and Medicaid spending in order to pay for the changes in the healthcare system. Ok, that is definitely a lot of money. However, is it going to cover the costs of creating a government healthcare system? Absolutely not. Economists believe that the true tab for Obama's healthcare scheme is over $1 trillion. But I guess it is the thought that counts.

Obama also said that if ... and that is a big if ... Congress ends up "requiring individuals to purchase health insurance," Obama would make sure to exempt "people who can't afford it." This "hardship waiver" would be a new government entitlement program. Also exempt would be small businesses. He says that small businesses should be exempt from any mandate that employers offer health benefits or pay a tax to finance government subsidies. Oh, so now we are talking about the government MANDATING that private businesses offer employees medical benefits. Can someone please point out the clause in our Constitution that gives the imperial federal government the authority to compel businesses of any size to cover the health care costs of their employees? I've looked ... and I can't find it.

That leads to the next point - tax increases. Obama did not address the issue of taxing healthcare benefits to pay for the poor, poor pitiful poor to have health insurance. He did, however, remind Congress of his tax proposal to "limit itemized deductions for upper-income earners." That's another way of saying that he wants to increase taxes on the rich. But the point is ...... he's gonna spend the money somehow, and cutting Medicare spending isn't going to do it. Your children are going to pay for this folly, and your grandchildren.

Note, please, that there is nothing in Obama's letter, or in his rhetoric, that speaks to any enhanced role for the private sector in our health care future. The goal here has long been to put government in complete control of each and every American's health care. It's about power. In Washington it is always about power. Legislation and ideas that enhance the power of Washington over the people of this country are celebrated, while legislation and idea that transfer power from Washington to the people are denigrated and fought. The FairTax comes to mind. Washington is having a rather easy time taking full control over our health care system because Americans welcome it. One month from today is July 4th, America's most hypocritical holiday. Americans who today are clamoring for the government to take responsibility for their healthcare will, in one month, be singing the praises of freedom. Give me a break.

What others are saying

  • From a lifetime chronically ill person
I was born with a plethora of neural tube defects that have plagued me since birth and have cost my insurance companies, health care providers and myself a pretty penny.

I have my own (wonderful) private health plan, but I have had to be careful to not damage myself while I work and recover from multiple major surgeries.

I am THAT person who is a strain on the system due to no fault of my own. I do not smoke, drink or abuse my prescriptions. I exercise when possible too.

I live with the knowledge that without my own private health plan I will be at the mercy of government care.. that is one of the few things that terrifies me.

Sorry folks.. I watched my grandfather deal with the VA. I am gotten very close to so many in the health care field and other patience who have dealt with serious, chronic conditions like I have.

And keep in mind that those of us who came out of the gate with birth defects get no pass on developing the common diseases that the rest of the world gets.

I don't have an answer to the solution. I do know that the push for national coverage is only coming from two camps though:

Those who really care for taking care of others who really need the care.

Those who are only looking for yet another way to keep themselves in power and having control over their fellow man.

I believe if we can keep that in mind when we make any decision on issues like this, we can do some real good.

The downside is, this world is full of egotistical , unethical political hacks who believe they were born to lead and control. That's the real problem.
  • Government Health Care
Obama says that he is going to pay for government run healthcare from the waste that he is going to cut from other government run programs. Isn't that just rich?
  • govt health care
"The key to socialism is to control the medicine". Who said that?

If they control your health care, they control you. Here is one fear that I have..... The surgeon general determines that handgun violence is a major contributor to health care costs. Therefore if you wish to receive health care, you need to turn in your guns. You dont turn them in, you cannot get your broken arm in a cast.

They can walk away saying that they made the country safer and have not infringed in the RTKABA.
  • Huh?
Nationalized healthcare is all a republican agenda ... By Stan Gable

Is somebody posting as Lil Stanley again? Knock it off!
  • Health Care
Obama can talk about limiting deductions on health care all he wants. The way the deduction works right now, hardly anyone except a very poor person with huge medical bills can get a deduction. So trimming the deduction rules will not gain any more tax money for the government.
  • Yes, the government should not have a hand in this, it is much better to be in the hands of greedy mega businesses who lay the decisions on people they hire with junior college degrees. Nationalized healthcare is all a republican agenda to get in charge of abortion because they dont believe in freedom.
  • National Health Care
Ladies, wait till cold-hands Uncle Sam determines who your gynecologist will be, mothers, wait till the people who brought us VA care chooses your child's pediatrician.
  • Fair tax
I am sorry, but every time I hear someone bring up the "fair tax" I don't know whether to laugh or get pissed, heres a news flash...IT AIN"T GONNA HAPPEN!!!!!
We as a country are soooo freakin far removed from even CONSIDERING it, I have a better chance of hitting the Lotto and I don't play it. We are in a socialist/fascist death spiral and come Nov 2010 if there is not a MASSIVE outcry and cleansing of our fed. government IT IS ALL OVER! I am TRYING to plan my escape route.
  • It Could Happen
This may sound like a stretch, but given all that's happened in a few short months, anything is possible. I foresee that once we have the government running our health care, some gov. official will decide that my non-hybrid car is contributing to global warming, thereby making everyone less healthy, therefore I must be taxed heavily until I see the light, and buy a new gov. approved car from GM (Government Motors).

The above example may seem extreme, but that's the direction we are headed. Once this is in place, any behavior that is outside the realm of government sanctioned behavior, is likely to be heavily taxed. After all when we are all paying the tab for everyone health care, we don't want anyone engaging in risky behavior that is going to make us all pay more. They are already talking about special taxes for such risky behavior as drinking a soda or a beer.
    Say good-bye to freedom!
  • Health Care and the Economy
“That's another way of saying that he wants to increase taxes on the rich.”

Wrong, the Fed will tax everyone. That’s were the idea of the VAT on top of the income tax comes in.

“Your children are going to pay for this folly, and your grandchildren.”

Wrong again, unless there is a huge reversal of the current third world banana republic economic policies and incredibly foolish energy policies in 18 months you will see the beginning of a collapse of the dollar and in 2 years the beginning of hyperinflation. Bottom line, any children or grandchildren will be lucky if they are not living in a replay of the Neolithic Age, OK maybe the Iron or Bronze Age.
  • Healthcare
Joyce, your right, Just look at Louisiana last week adding an override to Bobby Jindals veto of portions of the "Stimulus Bill", Added 5 minutes before vote, no one even asked questions! Then they wondered how it happened. I read 350 pages of the original stimulus bill (before my eyes glazed over & the drool hit the floor) it’s the Lawyer full employment act that benefits US citizens little.
If anyone thinks medical care is expensive now wait until it is free. Just look at the State of Florida’s Homeowners/hurricane insurance fiasco. State Farm is now leaving the state as the cost of doing business is greater than the benefit. The state is trying to sue to make them stay since the state now is the largest home insurer, and operates without the reserves that are required by insurance companies under state law (oh sorry they have the taxing authority up to the value of your property if they need it). This is just the beginning of the slippery slope that will swallow us all.
  • Promises, promises...
Reminds me of an old Dionne Warwick song. I also think about something I've heard, and laughed at before. "I still have checks, I can't be overdrawn!" There isn't enough budget cutting or tax increasing that can support the healthcare bonanza. If the government is hell bent for leather set on doing this, look at using tax refunds that go to lower income families to apply to health savings accounts or partnering with healthcare providers to offer a high deductible plan with co pays and prescription coverage. Cutting defense spending, Medicare and Medicaid, won't cover it, even most Democrats I've talked to understand that. And oh, by the way, wasn't it the Democrats in Congress who always warned Seniors about how the Republicans were looking to cut their benefits? We are screwed, but we won't even get a reach around out of it! Change, baby, change...I'll bet even Copyleft and Hugos Ghost can't explain this one away.
  • Dale in NJ
Dale, here is an interview with an economist who saw it coming, Janet Tavakoli. Too bad no one listened.

  • Medical Insurance
    Neal,
When my son was 8 I went through a divorce. My son was having some emotional difficulties and I decided to get him some counseling. After 6 months things were better and the counseling ended.
Now my son is 22, doesn't drink or smoke, is in excellent health and runs his own small business. He decided that he could now afford health insurance and requested quotes from 4 companies.
He was denied by three and the fourth offered him coverage at a rate almost three times the "normal" for his age group.
The reason cited: He has a past history of a mental issue. It didn't matter that it was 14 years ago, or that he was not on any medicine, or that it was counseling.
Now you tell me why I shouldn't care if the insurance companies go under!
Heck, at this point I'm willing to pay the extra taxes.
  • Health Care financing
    Neal,
It's beginning to look like your "fair tax" is gaining traction with the current interest in a "value added" tax. You could very well get your wish in spades as the income tax will NEVER be abolished by the political class. It will be retained in ADDITION to the VAT.
  • We need the government running our health care NOW. They do a great job with the USPS.... wait bad example. Medicare yea there is a good ...no wait not good. VA Hospitals that no wait....Social Security see government does that well... What SS is bankrupt again.

Wait we do not need Government running our health care.
  • Economists
Can anyone on the planet provide the name of ANY economist that saw this financial meltdown coming????

If not, why do we think that ANY number ANY one of them comes out with for ANY program holds ANY water???

I am simply amazed that people can't see these charlatans for what they are!! Oh I forgot, the media was educated in a gubmint skool.
  • I'm so confused
Don't even understand anymore how any of this is supposed to work and I think they are deliberately trying to confuse us! Wonder if anyone will read these bills and what else will be hidden deep inside.
  • Lord Barry's Healthcare
I'm wondering: Will anyone on the left be concerned YET, when The Leader has to create another pork bill in order to print MORE money we don't have, for the purpose of buying more printers with which to print more money?
