All of the sudden, Congressional Democrats are realizing the implications of this government takeover of GM. Why? Because they are starting to hear from constituents who aren't too happy about the fact that the government is deciding which dealerships will be put out of businesses. So now that these politicians have to worry about votes, they express "growing concern" to Obama about the closure of GM and Chrysler dealerships. Here, for your pleasure, is a letter from House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer and Reps. Chris Van Hollen and Daniel Maffei.

Dear President Obama:

We are writing to express our concerns about General Motors' and Chrysler's decision to close profitable automobile dealerships across the country, and urge you to ask GM and Chrysler to delay final action on proposed closures pending further review of the decision to consolidate dealerships and the process by which Chrysler and GM selected the dealerships to close.

Closing these dealerships will put over 100,000 jobs at risk at a time when our country is shedding jobs at an alarming rate. We also question the criteria being used to determine which dealerships should be closed and the fundamental fairness involved in this effort. It is our view that the market rather than leaving it up to the manufacturers whose poor leadership contributed to their demise. Furthermore, we believe car dealers will be key players in any effort to revive the American auto industry.

We believe the dealerships are one of the auto industry's key sources of strength and the manufacturers should continue to honor their agreements and contracts. The dealerships, and their more than 1 million employees, form personal relationships with customers that often contribute to brand loyalty and will be key to General Motors' and Chrysler's recovery following this economic downturn. While we understand the desire to reduce the number of unprofitable dealerships, no one has yet sufficiently explained the need to close profitable dealerships.

We recognize that efforts by your Auto Task Force prevented the total liquidation of General Motors and Chrysler, as well as their dealership networks. We commend your efforts to help these businesses survive these challenging economic times.

However, we are concerned that manufacturers are closing profitable dealerships to circumvent current contracts which could require expensive buy-outs under normal conditions. We are also concerned about allegations that dealers that have previously stood up for their rights against the manufacturers are being targeted by these closures. We believe that the forced closures of profitable dealerships needs to be scrutinized by the Task Force to prevent additional future financial loses to General Motors and Chrysler and job loses across the United States

We may consider legislative proposals to ensure that dealers and their employees are treated fairly, and we look forward to your timely response.

Look, folks. This is just the beginning. Obama is promoting a fascist economic system in the country. OK .. I know you're government educated and you don't really understand economic fascism. Here's your primer:

  • An economic system where both industry and business is owned and controlled by the government ..... Socialism.
  • An economic system where industry and business is privately owned, but controlled by the government ..... Fascism.
  • An economic system where industry and business is privately owned an privately controlled. .... Free enterprise.

See if this is taught in your local government school.

What others are saying

  • Socialism vs. Facism vs. Communism
Yeah, well the terms keep confusing everybody because it's like splitting hairs to begin with.

"Socialism" generally means personal privacy to some degree and some private industry remains, but that the majority of everything is controlled by government. People give up liberty because they want the benefits promised by government.

"Fascism" is generally a kind of socialism, but it is defined by government-promoted nationalism. It's just government control packaged to sell a bit differently. Also, the government is more than willing to seize private industry from its enemies and reward its supporters, so nothing is truly "private."

Communism, or Marxism, generally means the government controls everything and everybody. But rather than be unhappy with their totalitarian government, the people are sold on the concept that the private individual = bad, the collective society=good. They buy into this as a remedy for the class warfare stirred up by the government.

So in every case, government discards liberty with the people's support, offering to "fix" whatever problems they have and promising that the "people" are the ones in charge so that the dumber ones don't even notice they're slaves.
  • Cows, Geopolitics, and Big Business
Socialism: You have two cows. The government takes one of your cows and gives it to your neighbor. You're both forced to join a cooperative where you have to teach your neighbor how to take care of his cow.

Communism: You have two cows. The government seizes both and provides you with milk. You wait in line for you share of the milk, but it's so long that the milk is sour by the time you get it.

Dictatorship: You have two cows. The government takes both and shoots you.

Democracy, Democrat-style: You have two cows. Your neighbor has none. You feel guilty for being so successful. You vote politicians into office who tax your cows, which forces you to sell one to pay the tax. The politicians use the tax money to buy a cow for your neighbor. You feel good. Barbra Streisand sings for you.
Democracy, Republican-style: You have two cows. Your neighbor has none. You move to a better neighborhood.
  • yet more definitions...
Since nobody reads these things after about 2pm, let alone after people get home after listening in afternoon syndication, I dont know why I am bothering, but here goes anyway...

Let me also state that I am a libertarian, and hate all 3, regardless of how we define them, sorry.

Went online later and checked several definitions of them. Seems there is quite a bit of room for overlap among all 3. Neal seems to hate the word "communist". He says that once someone says that, the listener stops listening to whatever else they have to say, its become a "passe" word, these days.
I had got caught up on the "ownership" part, but in communism, everything (including "private property") is owned by "one party". I did see several definitions that included "the means of production is owned and controlled by the government". Seems all communists are socialists, but not all socialists are communists, I guess.
As for fascism, most did not list "the government" or even "one party", but "one person" or "dictator" who controls everything.
I also saw several references to "forcible suppression of opposition", "centralization of authority under a dictator, stringent socioeconomic controls, suppression of the opposition through terror and censorship, and typically a policy of belligerent nationalism and racism." "Although both communism and fascism are forms of totalitarianism, fascism does not demand state ownership of the means of production, nor is fascism committed to the achievement of economic equality."
Ok, I'll quit worrying about the details, I know though he doesnt use the word communism because of the above reason, and it seems like he is using the word fascism to get attention and stir up the pudding at times.
  • Government auto workers.
Will these Government Motor UAW members be Federal emyployees now? Will they just build their yearly quotas of autos, park them in an Arizona desert, cause no one will buy them, and then collect unemployment until start of next production cycle like good soviet workers? Buy American. Buy Ford.
  • ....the harder they fall
I guess some Obama supporters really believed he would be something other than a glorified social worker. Dumb masses! By this time next year, nobody will even admit to voting for the guy. There will be a point when not even the media's cheerleading will help.
  • Too little, too late
Now these brainiacs have an epiphany! You get the government you deserve which is why I think Neal is on the money with limiting voting to those that pay taxes..but alas I think the tipping point has already been reached..it's only going to get worse from here
  • Re: Definitions
Sigh, do we have to go through THIS exercise AGAIN?

Okay, Dictionary's like the Merriam-Webster online Dictionary Define these words as the following:

    Socialism

1: any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods
2 a: a system of society or group living in which there is no private property b: a system or condition of society in which the means of production are owned and controlled by the state

3: a stage of society in Marxist theory transitional between capitalism and communism and distinguished by unequal distribution of goods and pay according to work done.

Note definition 3: and the term “Transitional [Stage]”
    Merriam-Webster online Dictionary:
    Fascism

1.often capitalized : a political philosophy, movement, or regime (as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition
2: a tendency toward or actual exercise of strong autocratic or dictatorial control

    Note the 2nd definition.

As to the arbitrarily defining Fascism as:

“In order to meet the definition of fascism, we would need a dictator. “

Again, note definition #2 above, on a Tendency toward actual exercise of strong autocratic or dictatorial control .

Where did the Absurd argument that since we're not 100% like other fascist regimes, that the definition doesn't fit?

Whats the idea? Some arbitrary level of governmental control constitutes Fascism, and since we're only maybe 5% - 10% of the way it's some other ill defined term? How about Proto-fascism or Proto-Socialism?

Face it, for all intends and purposes, Fascism is the same as Socialism, and arbitrary qualifiers on the definition can't absolve the current administration of fitting the term.

If you support the current regime and comparisons between it and other Fascist and Socialist regimes make you uncomfortable, then don't shoot the messenger. The comparisons exist whether you like it or not.

You should be asking yourself whether you support Fascism or Socialism, and not nitpicking definitions.
  • GM and Chrysler
So now Congress is getting worried. Didn't Presbo say recently that the government would not get involved in such decisions as which dealerships would close?
  • ummmmm
did you say something butt nekid?
  • Hmmmmmmmm....
So let's see what the letter states they want - process to be reviewed (by whom), fundamental fairness (who decides), honor agreements and contracts (Yeah, like Obama and Congress did with AIG) and legislate "fairness" (who does this Congress - Yeah ok). So the ones to do this is the Auto Task Force - you know those guys who know Zilch about the auto industry and how it works - yeah those guys.

What a joke we have in elected officials.
  • re: the US Constitution
    Mr. Reardon,
Pray, tell who on Capitol Hill pays any attention to that document? I'm well aware what the document says and it's violated every day by our government.
  • Fascism v socialism
In order to meet the definition of fascism, we would need a dictator. However, the level of fascism that Neal describes didn't pop up recently. It's been going on for over a century in the US. Bits and pieces. With the government takeover of a private company, we are eligible to be called a socialist country.
  • John Galt
Where are you when we need you?!?!?!?!?!
  • Definitions
I'm sorry, after all these years, I cant get past Neals definitions.
An economic system where both industry and business is owned and controlled by the government ..... To me, that is Communism, where almost all property is owned by the "community", such as in a "commune".

An economic system where industry and business is privately owned, but controlled by the government ..... To me, and most of the world, that is Socialism, like in France, Venezuela, and unfortunatley, America.

Fascism is where the government uses force, including violent force, against those who oppose or disagree with it. Such as arresting those who speak out against it, sending troops to take over a tv or radio station, or newspaper, or what happened in Tienamen Square, Nazi Germany, or the movie V for Vendetta.
  • The letter is
way above obama's reading comprehension level. I think it also might be forged or poorly transcribed (losses is misspelled twice as "loses"), but let's have some fun with it anyway.
The short list of words not in obama's vocabulary:
    1. profitable
    2. review
    3. 100,000 (or any number with more than one zero)
    4. criteria
    5. economic
    6. downturn
    7. legislative
    8. market
And, finally, the last sentence of the letter should have been more properly worded as:
",...and we look forward to the timely response being programmed into your teleprompter."
  • Damn it answer me!!!!!!!
you better not ignore me! I ask a question damn it!

WHERE THE HELL IS JOHN GALT?!?!?!?
  • Amazing...No whining about the use of the Word 'Fascism' in association with the Fauxbama administration in the comments.
Cause it used to be that the Leftist's world view was that They CAN'T possibly be Fascists

Maybe we're finally get through to them what the Fauxbamo administration actually is...
  • Obama is facist
Another example of why Obama is a Facists.

    http://www.newsouthobjectivists.org/Home/tabid/36/EntryID/24/Default.aspx
  • Government School Teacher here
I teach American government in a high school. I just want to let you know that these differences are not only taught in my class, they are inculcated with them, quizzed, and tested. Moreover, almost 100% of my students can also tell you the difference between a profit and a profit margin.

It's a small step, but I work very hard to make independent thinkers. Too bad too many of my students simply don't care!
  • GM
Read the part at the end, where they credit Obama for preventing the "liquidation" of Chrysler and GM. I don't recall hearing ANY talk of liquidation. Bankruptcy, in the automaker's case, would have been an opportunity to reorganize while having breathing room from crditors. This was one of the key arguments used in providing bailout money to the automakers, that liquidating would cost thousands of jobs. That was the lie spewed by Washington and their UAW buddies.
  • Due Process
The dealers have been denied their due process, the retirement accounts that hold Chrysler/GM bonds that are forced to settle for pennies on the dollar are being denied their due process. None of this is legal and I hope someone has the guts to take it to the Supreme Court.... oh wait they are in the tank too.
  • Re: Re: Dealership closings
    Mr. Norwood,

The piper, otherwise known as the Federal Government, had a means to prevent the loss of billions of taxpayers dollars: The Constitution of the United States. There is no provision in that fabled document that allows the Imperial Government to give/lend money to private businesses, nor to take them over and run them. So, we have the illegal giving/lending of taxpayer money and now the illegal takeover of private businesses. The looters knew what they were doing, and the loss of 100,000 dealership jobs is just a price to pay for their power grab.
  • re: Dealership closings
At the risk of sounding terribly anti-capitalist, I must employ the old maxim that, "he who pays the piper gets to call the tune." Chrysler & GM took government money. It should come as no surprise that now said government is telling them what they must do. If the 2 companies had declared bankruptcy last August, they would have more say in what dealerships/plants to close. As it is now, they don't have a leg on which to stand.
  • Somebody just noticed who's going to take the pickle for Chrysler and GM failure
OOOPS! We, the federal government, took our constituents money and bailed out our friends and supporters (the UAW) and now, if it doesn't work (and it's beginning to look like it won't), the silent majority is going to blame us, the federal government, big time, for our inability to run a for-profit corporation.

Three representatives have now stood up to say "don't blame us, Obama dood it". Just a piece of CYA from Larry, Darryl and Darrel.
  • Of course they are concerned...
They now understand that there are bigger things at play here. It is starting to become painfully obvious that Congress and the President are not in charge. This is the liquidation of America. We need to stop the New World Order. This is serious. I mean it!
  • Punish the looters
The only way we can fight back is to punish the looters! Don't buy a Chevy or a Chrysler! Don't do business with banks/financial institutions that received TARP.
The one thing I'd like to start doing is only buying from farmers that DO NOT receive farm subsidies! Any suggestions? Any web sites out there that list those farmers?
  • Nice letter.
I have to wonder if they are really concerned about the government taking over large segments of our economy, or are they just upset congress doesn't have more say in how they are run?

We can always 'hope,' but I see a power struggle developing between the dp controlled legislative branch, and the dp controlled executive branch over the new powers the federal government has assumed. I put little weight on what the dp says, and watch what they actually do.
  • About time...
Someone noticed their own cranial/rectal inversion and said something....

Not that I think Hoyer is the one actually leading this one.
  • Letter
I notice they spelled losses wrong lol. Must be the the wonderful government educational system. Seems even Congress needs to take some remedial spelling courses.
