INSENSITIVE THOUGHT OF THE DAY

I heard this morning that the U.S. Navy is sending ships to hunt for the black boxes on the doomed Air France flight. Now ... This is a French airline flying a French-built commercial airliner with Brazilian and French passengers. We're strapped. John Galt is starting to work on his speech. And we're going to spend how much money searching for their black box? Aren't we the world's pariah? When is the last time the French helped us investigate a crash of an American flag carrier?

Just asking.

  • Remember kiddies that WE have planes flying over those same stretches of ocean, too.

Whatever caused that plane to go down could affect ours next and our superior technology and forensics is worth putting on the case.
  • Holly Cow!!!
Neal, yes this may come off insensitive, but oh man is it on the mark. That said...some of my best friends are French :-)
  • Our Navy Looking For French Black Box?
At first one thinks why are we spending our money to do this? However, retrieving the flight data recorder in a vast expanse of deep water ocean will be first rate real life training for our Navy if we ever need that skill for our on crashes. It is money well spent in my opinion.
  • ayy yeah right.
let em find their own junk.At their own expense..
  • Air France flight
    Air France flight
Because physics are universal regardless of the nationality of the air planes owners or passengers. I am sure Boeing wants to know if this is the first time in history turbulence has broken a plan apart or if critical components failed and why.
  • EMP bomb
The Navy must secure the evidence before it gets out that Muslim terrorists downed the flight with an electromagnetic pulse bomb.

This is all part of our new administrations policy of sparing no expense in preserving the diginity of our enemy.

    Just a thought.
  • Composite failure?
Why has no one asked the simple question, did it come apart because it is composite?

Sorry folks, I cannot bring myself to trust composites for air travel.

If everything is perfect, there is no problem, and of course everything is always perfect when flying, right?
  • Larry C
because the plane wouldn't fly...and nothing is truly indestructable
  • Why not make a trade...Brazil gives the kid they have back to his father in New Jersey and we help them find a black box.
  • the root cause
of this was that it was an Airbus.
I flew on an Airbus 330 on '07 - scariest ride of my life (and that was with over 700k ass-in-the-seat miles under my belt - some of it in really crappy weather). It was a perfectly clear day - that beast was all over the place and our final approach was at about a 30 degree down angle and FAST. Great bounce on landing too! Actually, we landed about three times on that one approach.
Give me an MD or Boeing any day!
  • off the subject
One of my customers emailed me naked pics of Mrs. Sarkozy, and she has to be the hottest woman alive. The French are the weasels of humanity, but their women are something to behold.
  • Black box
If the black box is made of indestructible material so it will survive a crash, why not make the whole airplane out of that material?
  • We need to know what went wrong...
I for one would like to know what went wrong.
  • paint job
    bamboo

they're only orange in the picture 'cuz it looks kooler.
  • This is a bad thing???
So you think it is a big deal to have diplomatic relations w/ a major European country? We probably have closer ships in the area. Not that big of a deal, if Neal wants to restrict money from the Military then that is his own belief.
  • Why wouldn't France help us?
When Pres. Reagan bombed Libya and Moammar Khadafy for terrorist acts, our bombers and jets based in England were refused permission to fly over France and had to take a longer route around that country. One plane and its crew didn't make it back, and the extra fatigue likely was a contributing factor. France didn't help us on that.
  • Black Box Search
Back in the early 1970s I was stationed in Hawaii when the French were conducting nuclear tests in the Pacific. One of my friends was supposed to fly aboard an AF Aria mission to observe French activities, but was scratched from the mission because he came down with the flu. The mission proceeded with someone else taking his place, and the aircraft disappeared without a trace. I always wondered if the French had something to do with its disappearance--and did they search for its black box?
  • I'll just make sure I fly a Boeing product.
Unless of course I'm wanting a little extra thrill, danger, and excitement with my flight.

Weaving around Southern summer storms and landing in heavy crosswinds can make for real exciting flights on those 'little' twin engine turboprops. They have rollercoasters beat hands down.
  • Navy Helping find the Airbuss Black box
    Neal,
I agree with our Navy helping France locate the black box for several reasons. First, we had American citizens on that plane and the boxes could go a long way in explaining their deaths. Second, U.S. Carriers fly the Airbus in their flights, if the crash was becasue of design error, the sooner it can be diagnosed the safer our citizens may be.
  • sarkozy not so cozy.....
we should do anything the french ask us to do 'cuz of the way the french prez and his hottie first lady showed the houseslave and his ol' lady the red ass........viva la snub!!!!!!
  • orange
    those are orange
  • We do it because nobody else can, and our folks can always use the training
I hope nobody expects the French or anyone else to be anything but resentful of it.

Go US Nav! - not a typo.

That's why I don't care much what the rest of the world says about us, when disaster strikes, the USA's the one they holler for. We're the ones that spend our wealth and risk our men and women to save millions and demand nothing in return, and leave when asked to.

If we really were an empire, they wouldn't dare critisize us like they do. They don't do it with the commies or the jihadis 'til the real imperialists are breathing down their throats, and they are squeeling for us to save them. That's their shame, not ours.
  • Do you not give a FLIP about commercial aviation SAFETY?
There you are, Neal, a loaded/trolling subject line. I just heard you ask this on the radio, and you got my blood pressure up. I suppose YOU'RE just trolling by saying WE are wasting OUR money looking for THEIR black boxes - as a pilot yourself, you surely know better. As someone already said, these are international carriers, and She Who Must Be Obeyed could have a flight on an Airbus someday. If you don't want her riding MARTA on a weekend, would you let her fly on an Airbus?

Emotional/trolling arguments aside, it's The Right Thing To Do. Every nation that has the ability should be helping in the recovery efforts as much as they reasonably can, ESPECIALLY in finding the black boxes so we can find out what went wrong and fix any possible safety problems with these airplanes.

Inside those black boxes is almost surely information that can SAVE LIVES. It's criminal not to do every effort we possibly can to retrieve them.

    "Ben from Norcross"
  • I'm flying one of these in Sept
American carriers use these aircraft. It is in our best interest to recover the 'black boxes' as they may shed light onto the cause of the crash, and whether equipment or training related, corrective measures can be instituted. It will benefit US citizens. That being said, we really should charge the French for services rendered.
  • Insentive Thought of the Day
I think that our people want to find out if it was a terrorist attack.
  • Black Box
We are doing it because it the right thing to do. As for Neal's silly comment about the French not helping to find the black boxes in PA on 9/11, the simple answer is: we did not need help. The plane crashed on dry land and we knew pretty much where it was.

Helping in a situation like this is the right thing to do. It is neighborly.

It also serves as a good training exercise potentially.
  • Blackboxes
We need to rule out terrorism, plain and simple.
  • Why not?
I have no problem with this. I hope we are charging a nice healthy consulting fee to Air France. We certainly can use the money.....
  • You Heard Wrong, Dipstick!
The Navy is sending a team with equipment, not ships. This from FoxNews.com, "Two U.S. Navy devices that can detect emergency beacons to a depth of 20,000 feet (6,100 meters) are being flown to Brazil with a Navy team, according to the Pentagon. They will be delivered to ships that will then listen for transmissions from the black boxes, which are programmed to emit signals for at least 30 days."
  • Blackboxes
The Navy is trolling around and we are paying the salaries of the sailors. So short of downsizing and not having the fleet out to sea, we are spending the money anyway.

Why not put them to work on something. If they mess it up, oh well it was only the French. If it is successful then we get kudos. Either way they get the training for when WE need them.
  • black box recovery
Does anyone think that we can find these before they quit sending signals. It will be a wasted effort, but we should do it.
  • Craig
An ATC mistake of letting the Airbus take off so closely behind a 747.

There was also pilot error in over compensating for the turbulence and putting the way more sideways than designed, snapping the vertical tail off.

There were issues with the rudder controls, but they were minimal.
  • Black Box
It's the right thing to do. Period.

Craig, one Airbus lost it's vertical stab after taking off right behind a 747. It's called severe wake turbulance. That plane crashed in the Queens because of an ATC mistake.
  • The reason we help
Apparently we have a piece of technology the rest of the world doesn't have*. We want to show the world we are still the go-to guys when the chips are down, and someone in the world needs a technological miracle. Time to thump our chests a little bit.
    * Until the Chinese steal it and copy it.*
  • Training exercise
Think of it as a real-life training exercise.
  • The French asked for our help
Didn't we ask for their help in the was on terror?
Tell me, just what was their response?
  • One word
    TRAINING
  • Navy
The French Navy is incapable of doing what the US Navy is now doing. BUT give Obama time and we will be calling on the Chinese Navy to help out since our Navy will "changed".
  • US helping in French Airliner Crash
I am not counting on this but do hope that the French will reimburse us for the expenses our government incurs looking for their black boxes. I have no problem showing the world that America again is to the rescue, if they pay for it.
  • Americans fly on Airbus planes also
Airbus flies planes in the US also, and it is in our interest to see that the root cause is determined so as to prevent it from happening to an American flight. We have the tools within our navy to help with that, and seeing as how our defense budget is larger than the defense budgets of every other nation combined, we surely have some wiggle room there to allocate funds to a recovery instead of yet another nuclear sub drill under the Arctic ice cap (or something to that effect...).
  • French Crash
At least a few Navy guys will have job security for another week.
  • Maybe it is a selfish move...
Maybe they want first crack at the black boxes. Remember the EADS/Airbus line of aircraft seems to have a propensity to shed their vertical stabilizers in flight.
  • dido
I had the same thought yesterday, but didn't have the forum to get it out there. Thanks for putting it the way it needs to be said. we went broke in april and the powers to be think the way we get out of this mess is to borrow more and spend more. Also to spend God knows how much to take your wife on a date to New York at the expense of the tax payers. These people need to treated like a child with an allowance. You get so much money and thats it.
