The head of the Environmental Protection Agency is a woman by the name of Lisa Jackson, and Lisa Jackson is concerned about environmental justice. She believes that minorities and low-income people are the victims of pollution by evil US companies and businesses.

She says, "There are too many places in this country where pollution and environmental degradation fall disproportionately on low-income and minority communities ... We can't stand by and accept those disparities ... At EPA, part of our central mission is to show all Americans that we work for them."

Actually, there's a reason why pollution --- air pollution, for instance - has a disproportionate impact on some poorer communities. Prevailing winds. Not racism - prevailing winds. Look at most industrialized cities in the United States. Study the prevailing winds. You will find that when these cities were built the real estate on the upwind side of the smokestacks cost more, while the downwind real estate cost less. Why? Sorry ... if you can't figure that one out, you need help. So .. what are we supposed to do now? Punish industry because people know which way the wind blows?

Sounds like Lisa Jackson and South Carolina Senator James Clyburn are playing from the same rule book of racial chips.

What others are saying

  • Somebody wake me up when this nightmare is over
This clown troupe of an administration has gone COMPLETELY off the deep end. Can things get any worse? This WTF moment brought to you by a non-government educated, fed up provider.
  • No racism....
The situation is this: They put in a factory, or an airport. Real estate prices remained depressed in areas adversely affected by noise or smell or other pollution. Poorer folks see an opportunity in the depressed prices and move in. And then some race pimp looks at the situation and declares it environmental racism.
  • Oh....
Guess we'd better not tell her about parts of Albany, Ga. being built in flood plain. Or parts of New Orleans being below sea level. People go where the land is affordable. Look into the zoning commissions before you try to villainize the developers and builders. Should somebody have said "not here!" You betcha. Should community leaders have paid close attention? Sure. Is it a broad conspiracy by the 'evil rich'? That's a bit of a stretch. Environmental Justice is another way of saying the federal government needs to be even more involved than they already are. And that's way, way, way, too much!
  • CHANGE....
Well Prezbo keeps on giving me change that is making me feel sick..or is it just the pollution in the air?
  • Obama appointee
Another Obama appointee playing the race card. Sure hope them libs are happy putting this dork in office.
  • or, is it that
evil US companies and businesses are the victims of pollution by minorities and low-income people?
    I'm just asking!
  • Next they will be whining they have no jobs because the factories in their areas are shut down first.
Some will always look for and find an excuse to blame someone else for their problems, whatever they are.

It's like the crack epidemic, first they claimed it was being allowed to happen to destroy poor communities. Society, the lawmakers, police, and judicial system responded, giving it elevated priority, severity, and stigma. Now it's the fault of society and the authorities so many involved with the crack trade from those communities are off in prison.

There's lots of reasons for location, including availablity of trainable people needing jobs, access to transport hubs and routes, infrastructure, and tax breaks for manufaturers to locate facilities in run-down or 'economically depressed' areas (where they've already run employers off).

Some people live very well off playing it back and forth.
  • R U kidding me...
Typical… personal responsibility has absolutely nothing to do with where you live, nothing to do with your job skills, nothing to do with your education level… it’s always someone else’s fault! BLAME BLAME BLAME!!!

It’s not "low income", its low achievement, its dependency, its culture, its low drive, etc… in the USA, what are the factors that put 99% of the people in the situation they are in? It’s the choices they made, it’s the parents that think government school is their daycare service, it’s the people who look to government to solve their problems, etc…

“Most” of these people (parasites) live in these areas because they are not achievers, and I’m sure these factories were there long before these underachievement housing areas were built.

"It’s not wealth envy… its achievement envy"
  • Club-a-Liberal
i guess you didn't see the article under the Reading Assignments "Why Are Conservatives So Mean?". that was supposed to be ironic.
i'm sooooooo sorry you live in a land of pooooor people. it must embarrass you soooo much
  • Didja see this on the LSM?
Scientists track penguin poop from space. Now that's worth spending who knows how much money on. Money for nuthin. What a joke.
  • idiot
this bimbo is a class A idiot. This kind of crap sounds like something a pop star would say.

So whats her proposal to fix this "problem?" No wait dont tell me.. redistribution of wealth.. am I right?

I suppose we should be giving money to people who set themselves on fire as well since they got burned eh? Sometimes people have to take responsibility for their own actions.Nobody said they HAD to live there.. if they cant get a skill that pays well enough to live elsewhere.. they can always live in another city as well.

this victim mentality is a disorder..
  • Environmental Justice
She is dead-on right. Love Canal is a prime example, what rich person in their right mind would live there?

Poor people simply don't have the options that rich people do. If you were going to open a paper-mill, would you do it in Delaware or North Carolina? What about an industrial hog farm? North Carolina wins hands down, the people who would try to stop you get pushed aside as environmental radicals.

Don't believe me? Go to Sylva NC, or Bertie County North Carolina. You will know the place by the smell.
  • But
why do they choose to remain poor....

They can get educated and move. Poor that stay poor will always put themselves in harms way. No reason for us to have to pay for it. If the companies are spewing stuff into the water, stop that part, but it shouldn't require yet another CZAR.
  • Personal Responsibility...
When I was looking for a house to buy one of the things I considered was location. I did research about the areas I was considering. So if I bought in a bad area, it was my FAULT! It wasn't the factory, the developer, and so on. It was my responsibility!!!

So if someone moves into these areas, and no one FORCED them to move there, Then it is their FAULT!!!

This society changed from a society that believed in personal responsibility into a "when in doubt sue" society. It started with that idiot women who sued McDonald's for HER BAD JUDGEMENT and 12 other idiots agreed she wasn't responsible. I don't know about you, but the last place I am putting a HOT cup of coffee is between my legs!!!
  • More of Clinton's Droppings
Oh, how surprised I was to read that this comes from one of Bill Clinton's feel good policies.
Yes, the companies that built factories looked for communities filled with poor people and minorities and intentionally put the factories right there, just so those poor people could soak up the pollution in their lungs.
    YEAH RIGHT
What they were looking for was cheap land.
    HELLO!
Gee, who lives on the cheap land?
This is really a NIMBY problem. If you want to build some factory, refinery or nuclear power plant in the middle of nowhere, it's going to be in a wilderness area and the greenies will do everything in their power to stop that.
  • It's Funny Boortz Has A Problem
It's funny that Boortz has a problem with what this woman says, but sees no problem with Sotomayor spouting the same sort of crap.
  • pollution
"And the wayward wind....is a racist wind"

    ....with apologies to Gogi Grant
  • Lisa Jackson
    Lisa Perez Jacson

Dat woman got a white name, a mexican name and a black name!

    She be adopoted too.

She qualify for that good life story message.

She did do good at skoo, though.
  • She is right
The reason poor people move in next to plants is because the property is cheaper. Developers build subdivisions outside the plant's perimeters and then are shocked to find that groundwater is polluted, soil is contaminated, or that the air is filled with toxins in the part per trillions. And when children growing up near these plants have health problems due to exposure, NOBODY listens or cares because the plants are a job base. So they have to sue. Then the plant moves to China to kill them instead. And then we have more poor people. But all is well when we can abate the emissions. But all is not well when a plant only has to pay a surcharge to discharge more than 25 tons per year of VOCs into the atmosphere.
  • Environmental Justice
Environmental justice???? Wait until Cap and Trade rears its ugly inflationary head.
  • She an idiot...
...and a fascist. Im still looking for where it says EPA in the constitution. Can't find it anywhere.
  • coal
I've worked on some coal power plants, and believe me when I tell you they're surrounded by the poorest people in America.
  • But...
"Sounds like Lisa Jackson and South Carolina Senator James Clyburn are playing from the same rule book of racial chips."

Perhaps - but I trust that Lisa has some type of secondary education on the environment and its protection. I wouldn't trust James Clyburn to cut my grass or take out the trash without screwing it up.
  • She's right, but not in the way she intended...
Environmental policies do disproportionally affect low income families. Regulations grounded in politics rather than science drive up the costs of goods and services for everyone. If Ms. Jackson wants to dispense justice for the poor and minorities, she should start by putting a stop to them being used as pawns for the environmental groups that exploit them. I am afraid, however, that isn't the justice she is seeking.
  • Pollution
Oh the precious lowwwwwww income and lesssss fortunate and minorities are victims once again. Maybe if they took a bath every now and then, and stopped eating fast food and farting all over the place, things may smell better around their little area.

BTW, isn't funny how libs always use low-income and minority in the same sentence. Isn't that the typical condescending attitude of libs? For the minorities out there reading this, are you ever going to get a little outraged that the libs/Dems always equate you with low-income, welfare recipients as if you are all one in the same?
  • No good turn goes unpunished
For the past 150 years poor southern blacks and white trash have flocked to the factory towns of the North. Particularly the Rust Belt. They were welcome. They were given jobs. They were allowed to form their stupid unions and buy property. Now the unions have crippled the companies and the EPA is set to finish the job. There is the real injustice Ms. Jackson.
Unfortunately, the liberal brain is too underdeveloped to see it.
  • Environmental Justice
As a Libertarian, I could see this working if it was applied to property rights. If a polluter contaminates my land, trees, and water, and other resources, you better beleive I'd sue the polluter. It comes down to the basic principle of keeping your stuff off my land!
  • Newark, NJ
Newark, NJ was a beautiful city until a certain segment of the population decided to riot and destroy the place where they live. After the riots, the civilized people moved away and the city crumbled.

A lot of "low income" people live in the crappiest parts of America because they like to sh*t where they eat.

Having said that, Newark is now a city on the rise. The eternally-horny Bill Clinton put them on the 50 worst cities list and they got a ton of money to clean the place up. It only took 30+ years to clean up after 3 days of riots.
  • No problem
Let's go ahead and see if we can place a landfill near the Kennedy compound.
