DETAILS OF THE HEALTHCARE BILL

The House and the Senate are working on their versions of the healthcare bill after they return from the Fourth of July holiday. But we are starting to get a better idea of what to expect from the House. Especially considering the advice doled out yesterday by Tom Daschle and John Podesta. They support the idea of taxing some employer-provided health benefits. This seems to be the direction we are heading in.

The healthcare bill currently being considered by the House would include the following, according to the Charlotte Business Journal:

-Employers would have to pay at least 72.5% of the cost of insurance premiums for full-time employees

-Employers would be required to pick up at least some of the tab for insuring part-time employees

-Businesses that don't provide that minimum level of coverage would be required to pay the federal government a fee based on 8% of their payroll

-Small businesses would be exempted from that "play or pay" requirement

What others are saying

  • Don't just grouse about it here!
DO SOMETHING!! Start fighting back by writing, emailing AND calling your Senators and Congressman. At least once a week and more if you have the time. If we jam up their phone lines, fill thair inboxes and mailboxes perhaps we can motivate the House and Senate to do the right thing here and stop this bill that should have NEVER made it out of the house in the first place! We have to take part in this. If we just sit on the sidelines fussing about it, we're done and the socialists win. I say NO!
  • Taxed Health Ins Benefits
I pay a fortune every month for state health insurance that was supposed to be a "widow's benefit" when my husband died. Hah! All it does is go up, and I can't afford to use it. If the Socialist-Democrats get their way, does it mean that the state of Texas health insurance "provided" to me through my husband's former university employment will increase by 8% as well? Cause it already increases by that much nearly every year? So would that be a 16% rate increase? If so, I am cooked as I can't afford what I pay now. What a bunch of s.o.b.s we have in Congress! Never mind our damned Socialist president!
  • Taxing the sick
Some states, mine included )Mississippi) have a tax on sick people. They tax hospital rooms! They do this sleazy thing to attract matching federal funds. So while the governments (fed and state) are telling us they want to help by enslaving us to keep down health care costs, it is the government driving those costs up so they can create a crisis.
  • House Healthcare Bill
Why not call it "Ripping Out Wal-Mart's Throat bill" and have done with it.

  • exempt
If small businesses are exempt, all private corporations in the country should disband into small businesses. It can be done. Screw the commies.

  • Catch 22...part deux
One way or the other, the government is going to punish us. I have healthcare through my employer. They offered it along with great salary and incentives. It was that or pay me an even higher salary which of course, means I pay more taxes( and so do they...). Either way, I'm screwed. Thanks, candy assed liberals. You won't be happy til everyone is brought down to your level, will you?

  • 8% over and over
Boss just went through what this would mean for our company. We are in the flooring manufacturing business.

    - our suppliers of raw material would increase their prices by 8%

    - we are already paying 8% more for our goods (see above) and then 8% more for payroll, so we increase our prices 16% over what they are now (8% for the material 8% for our payroll)

    - installers buying from us are paying 16% more than they were a year ago. They will increase their prices to the customer (most installers are independent so won't be affected by higher payroll I think.

It's that nasty imbedded tax thing. Gee, where have I heard that....
  • I expect I'll have free time on my hands ...
There'll be fewer jobs to go around. Corporations (I work for one) will maintain their profit margins by either raising prices or lowering expenses. The quickest way to reduce payroll expense is to ...

I won't care what them slimy politicians due to income tax rates ... I won't have an income to tax. HA HA! The joke's on you, Copyleft - one less taxpayer to fund your freeloading lifestyle and another sharp elbow to bump you away from the gub'mint tit.
  • Healthcare tax
The 8% of payroll tax sounds a lot like the "Walmart tax" attempted a couple of years ago in Maryland
  • Taxing employer-provided health benefits?
Bad idea. And to illustrate just how bad it is, how come the unions are exempted long as the rest of us working class pay for it? Explain that one, Copy.
  • Yep
just hand out those separation notices
  • Health Care Bill
The mandated employer split is going to be a problem, although it is in line with current industry practice. I can see many marginally profitable businesses closing shop over it.
  • Neal's right again!
Clearly this approach is a bad idea. Employers need to get OUT of the business of providing health insurance for their employees.

And the best way to arrange that? Single-payer. Duh.
