DEMOCRATS VERSUS THE UNIONS

I don't have to go into the details of what is going on in California right now. The bottom line is that the state is broke. Part of the reason California is broke is because the wealthy, the high-producers, the larger taxpayers have fled. Can you blame them? We are still free enough to chose to escape high tax states, though that may change under the enlightened leadership of Barack Obama. At any rate, now California has to balance its budget, and it is ugly. Amusingly, it is putting a real strain on the relationship between state Democrats and the labor unions. I say amusingly because I love to see unions scream and politicians squirm.

California is going to have to cut government services --- big time. In fact, some government services may be eliminated altogether. CalGrants, for instance, provides financial aid to low-income students of union members. That program would be phased out. Also, government home healthcare services would be slashed. There's even a headline on Drudge this morning suggesting that California may end its welfare programs. It's news like this has the unions' thongs in a wad because many of them would lose their jobs or see a significant reduction in forces.

What is the solution offered up by the unions? Well .. the same solution Obama has for funding his government takeover of health care. It's really very easy. You just tax the rich! Yep, there is a union pledge being passed around to support $44 million in new or higher taxes on the wealthy, oil companies, tobacco industry and others. The California Democrats, it seems, aren't biting. The unions are "appalled" that Democrats are openly discussing the idea of cutting government programs without first considering the idea of tax increases. Union members are beginning to ask themselves: "If these Democrats are not going to stand up for us, then what good is it to have them there?"

So will these Democrats end up bending to union demands? If not, it could lead to the end of their political careers. If they do, it could lead to the financial collapse of California.

What others are saying

  • Navt Buckeye
I never said that. Charlie Scott said it in response to me.
  • Sorry BN
Maybe now your ex-employees will understand. Good luck.
  • Cal Grant "Poster Boy"
Please take not that the "Cal Grant" poster-boy is of course a "hypheneted-American", i.e., America's victims in perpetuity.
  • went bankrupt da udder day..........
so I have a bunch of time on my hands. feel like crap had to put 41 good people outa werk....
  • To Dale...
Funny you said "Remember the KKK was democrat until the democrats became liberal."

Because after serving in the militar for over twelve years...the most racial and unbearable remarks all came from those who either claimed to be Democrats or Liberal. You see Dale...most Conservatives don't care what you believe as long as you let what they believe alone...

But libs can't do that...they have to make everyone believe what they believe...and then call it freedom..

    Sorry isnt it?
  • Cali Taxes
Here's an idea; if the unions want tax raises, how about taxing the union dues
  • ACK
    You an ol fart CS.

butt neckid you going crazy today! What do you suggest? I got my sig....
  • To Dale
    Made you post!

Remember the KKK was democrat until the democrats became liberal.

While I have visited at least 19 foreign contries, I have lived in Alabama for 58 years.

(Personal aside to Neal: This is such great fun!)
  • Unions
Unions served their purpose, but now? We have the EEOC, OSHA and any number of state and local equivalents to look after the interests of employees. Unions have outlived their usefulness.

If business is strong, there tends to be a shortage of canidates to fill positions, that is when employees have it the best. So really, the best way to ensure employee benefits is to grow business.
  • you deserve a break.........
    let's break the gubmint......REVOLUTION.
  • Thong Wadding
    Thongs are, by definition, unwaddable.

Something else must be bunched up between the union cheeks.
  • I'll have what Charlie Scott is smoking.
I lived in Alabama for 32 years and know that Wallace was never a Republican. He ran as a moderate Democrat who opposed the Klan. He got his ass kicked and uttered the famous "I'll never be out-niggered again". He then ran as a bigot and became the most famous segregationist of the modern era. Democrats, defender of the black man?

Please explain when he was a Republican.
BTW, the GOP didn't have him shot. When they do it, the person dies :-)
  • Unions are parasites that eventually kill the host.
Their members don't care, as long as they die last. When the well paid union leaders and lawyers finally negotiate their clients out of a job, they just go on to wreck another company.
  • Bringing the unions under control
    Dear Mikee,

Thank the unions for the weekend, and the fact that when you turned 12 years old, you weren't a veteran with seniority and tenure in a cotton mill.

When they come for YOU, will anyone be left to speak up?
  • Lower Alabama
I lived in Mobile ten years as a child. I loved it there. Four houses down was Robertson's Bayou where we swam all summer. Warm weather is roughly from March through October. If I could retire anywhere I want it will be Cedar Key, Florida. It reminds me of old Mobile.
  • Free to Choose
If you want to see how political power corrupts people's principles, google "Arnold free to choose." Here is a man that use to understand the importance of liberty but lost his way when he began pandering to the dumb-masses. And so, bye-bye Cali! On a side note, I thank God everyday for Milton Friedman, which who Arnold is speaking for in this video.
  • don't feel sorry for Cali
Need a job in the public sector? Well, Cali is the place to be! Compare your salary to these winners' salaries:

  • Mikee reminded me of something
The healthcare union had originally agreed to massive cutbacks that would have helped the state tremendously, but SEIU (associated with ACORN) pressured Washington into INTERFERRING and stopping the negotiations.
  • Cal Grant
Just who is Cal Grant, and why does he need to be free?
  • Cal Grant
Just some info from here in Cali.
Cal Grant is for pretty much any student with kids or independent. There are a few different programs with different amounts of money. I am pretty sure I got 500 dollars per semester, which was the minimum I believe.

An interesting side note. When I first moved out here from Wisconsin in 2000 I went to a local community college for a semester to get my AA and look into other schools. Because I had not live in California long enough, I had out of state tuition. Something like 1,200 for the semester (13 credits). California residents at the time payed.....12 dollars a credit.
  • Ahno
Charlie Scott - if you had been paying attention you would know that Arnold tried to change things. The public employee unions blew him out of the water with millions of dollars of lies aired on TV to sway the voters in the 'reform election". This state can't be saved until the public employee unions are brought under control.
  • Charlie
    You so bad!

I like Alabama, especially LA. Although, spent a lot of time in Desoto Falls. I guess that is almost Tennessee though. Hope you guys get it together!
  • Hi, Joyce
I would love to see states' rights.

Which brings up another point. George Wallace was an early Republikkkan. When he polled 43% in the Maryland primary, Raygun, and later the Bushwahs, decided there must be something to that states' rights stuff, adopted (stole) his agenda, and had him shot.

Here in Alabama, we don't even have county's rights, i. e. home rule.

If a county wants to crack down on anything, it has to go through Montgomery, and be voted on by the entire state. Our 100 year-old constitution weighs something like 100 pounds, and needs a major overhaul

However, the lack of home rule led to some great nudie bars out in the county. When I did research in them, I discovered that the local power mongers were already there doing research of their own.
  • Is Ahno a girly man?
I though Ahno was going to fix all that. Wasn't he the Republikkkans' Second Coming?
  • I LOVE IT
Finally these unions will relaize that you can only fleece the taxpayer so much before the proverbial back breaks. Maybe some of these union memebers will actually find work on one of Obama's stimulus projects shovelling dirt.
  • LOL
Oh the irony. It is hurting my side as I laugh at these foolish politicians.

Hey you retards, it is as the bumper sticker reads "Socialism works....until you run out of other peoples money"

They have been taking and giving to their voting block for so long...now the well is dry, business has left the state, the illegals are coming faster and faster, regular citizens are starting to leave and what is happening....LOL.....they are broke.

Yet the unions still want to have their cake and eat it too.

See DEMS this is what happens when you try to appease blocks of voters. They are never happy. You gave them what they waned for years...not is gone...but they still want it....now what to do, what to do....
  • Question about a bankrupt state:
I am curious that if the state does run out of cash, will the legislators miss paychecks?
  • And you know what they say
as goes Californication so goes the nation...
  • Californication
is actually coming up with some good ideas these days.

    Legalizing Mary Jane
    A flat tax
    Ending welfare

I'm ready to move there as soon as they pass just these three things...
  • California
And who is surprised by this? Socialism as an economic system always fails. Atlas always shrugs. I really like Jubilation's comment- this is just the first domino. Unfortunately, the entire USA will be the last.
  • Unions want raised taxes?
"The unions are "appalled" that Democrats are openly discussing the idea of cutting government programs without first considering the idea of tax increases."

I could of swore the people of CA just voted down tax raises......... Someone had to consider these raises in order for them to be voted on. There is a 50/50 chance it was Dems brought this to the table.
  • Next?
NC is quickly approaching CA status. DEM controlled gov't sidesteps their responsibility to the state taxpayers in favor of retaining the ranks of state government payroll for fear of losing that voting block. Furthermore, the graft, corruption and waste is so heavy that the pot is boiling over in front of the public eye. Sorry to say, too few appear to give a damn. Needless to say, the TAX cookbook is on the counter.
  • can be scary too
While it is much more entertaining to watch this than say, American Idol (Obama), there is a scary component here. If the Federal Government were to step in, they would pretty much take over. And that includes any other state. We could see states rights violated even more than they already are.
  • Socialism about to implode
The faults of socialism are showing up BIGTIME, Now if the legislators have the balls to do what is required, or to finish blowing their political brains out.

maybe the country will learn. They are fond of the line as california goes, so goes the country. I hope this time it's quite right.
  • Wonder which state is next ...
California is just the first domino. Who's next?
  • HUH???
This whole think is weird. First of all, low-income students of union workers? Is there such a thing? I guess in California, $50,000 is "Low-Income"... Or does that mean that the student only needs a low income regardless of the income of the parent union worker? Besides, I thought that's what the union dues were for - to "give back" to their employees during times of strike, scholarships, etc. I'm appalled that Kalifornia even allows tax money to be used by people of a "special" class only. Ugh.
  • California
I'd love to see what would happen in California if they lowered taxes and got rid of welfare. My guess would be that the less productive would flee the state and the rich would flock to it. I bet California's balance sheet would reverse itself very quickly.
  • Want some cheese with that Whine?
LOL...I LOVE it when a plan comnes together!

You know it all had to start unraveling at some point. Who knew it would be so soon? What a great week this is turning out to be :)
