Same exact thing happened to my Lab/Chow in my buddy's garage. They cornered her, and she looked up at me with a "is it okay to maul these rats?" look on her face.

I used to know a male Chihuahua that ruled a yard of 3 pits, a Chow, and a Bull Mastiff(he was neutered though). He could jump clean over that Mastiff longways. They are the quickest dogs I know of.
Dogs are pack critters, they work together against threats or prey. Most likely, every time that couger made a move toward one, the others would move in on flank and rear. Barking and moving around quickly like they do, they kept the cougar confused and distracted. They probably couldn't bring a cougar down, but they could certainly keep him/her from bringing down anything.
Even a big single canine isn't much of a threat to an adult human that uses their brain and physical advantages, but a pack of any sized canines can be very dangerous to almost anything that walks land.
Land Piranha
Chihuahuas are the terrestrial equivalent of piranha. One is no threat and can only take a small bite, but if you get a bunch together then watch out!!!
My Chihuahuas
I have kept Chihuahuas all my life (I am 57). Not only are they courageous, loyal little dudes and dudettes, they are phenomenal chick magnets. Take on to the park, and all manner of women will come up and want to talk and pet your babydoll. Were I 40 years younger, I would have the phone number of every 16 year-old in town.
If you acclimate them to other people at an early age, they can be very sweet and friendly. They are also great judges of character. If a man approaches, I can never predict how my Zoe will react. My friend Kim says she is very accurate as to who is a nice man. If I let Kim carry her around, lots of men come up and want to talk. So, not only is she a great chick magnet, if you are a woman, she is a great d1ck magnet.
Now, if my wife would just let me date. (Women)
Lesson to learn
Size matters not.
Now if only more people acted that way towards government entities.

Chihuahuas are tenacious yappers
Got 2 (was 3) across the street. They will go near (but stay out of range) yapping away viciously. Though I am not a fan of the breed, they can have a big presence.
