BIG OIL ON CLIMATE LEGISLATION

How would America's biggest oil companies react to this cap-and-trade legislation? Most people would say "who cares?" because they are big, bad, evil corporations. But you should care, because they big, bad, evil corporations also provide Americans with jobs and energy.

So how will these companies react? According to Bloomberg News, they will be closing plants, cutting capital spending and increasing imports. You see, fuel importers will only need to purchase permits for the fuel that is to be burned by cars, trucks, etc. Domestic oil companies, on the other hand, would also have to buy allowances for any CO2 produced by their plants. Clearly that would make domestic companies less competitive and create an imbalance in the market. Yeah .. .haven't thought of that one, have you?

The CEO of ConocoPhillips, Jim Mulva, says, "It will lead to the opportunity for foreign sources to bring in transportation fuels at a lower cost, which will have an adverse impact to our industry, potential shutdown of refineries and investment and, ultimately, employment."

It is estimated that one out of every six US refineries would close by 2020 because the cost of carbon allowances would simply erase profits, according to the American Petroleum Institute. For the consumer, carbon permits would add 77 cents to the price of a gallon of gasoline. Slowly, people have started to realize that Obama has mastered the art of increasing taxes on businesses, which ultimately pass on those increases in the form of price hikes for consumers.

What others are saying

  • Other Products
Why do people think that gasoline is the only thing that is made from Crude oil. They then think that we are only dependent on it for the gas. Gas is less than one half of the total products from oil. Here is a short list...see how many things you are dependent on.
gasoline, diesel, motor oil, kerosene, butane, asphalt, tar, grease, propane, plastics (there are hundreds of types such as PVC, PTBE, etc.),
    Ammonia
    crayons
    various kinds of adhesives
    synthetic materials
    paint, fertilizer
    tennis shoes
    drink containers
Man made fibers such as Nylon and Polyester, Washing Power and Farming Chemicals.

    *yawn*
  • Nope, Copygirl believes it
    And all too many do.

You sure she isn't your daughter they way you take up for her? Does she need it?
  • Big Oil
Let's see... Big oil is bad, yet government made it bigger. Bigger companies have a smaller cost per employee for regulations and taxes. This encourages growing into ever larger companies.
    Check SBA: http://www.sba.gov/advo/press/01-10.html

Almost everything in grocery stores have plastic. Gardening will be difficult because most of the pesticides and fertilizers are petroleum based. While working for IHS, Inc the number was that more than 50% of all chemicals are derived from petroleum (being used as raw material).

It's okay.... government is the answer.... (That almost made me vomit).
  • Neal, you're only partly right here
Many big businesses (far too many) LOVE big government because they get together (for a "nominal fee" for the politician) and write regulations that put smaller competitors out of business. In this case Marx was right:"The capitalists will sell us the ropes with which we will hang them." Big business doesn't like competition or freedom, they cut into their bottom lines, which is why businesses should not even be allowed to lobby, it's incestuous and ripe for abuse
  • @Copy
"If Big Oil is driven out of business, America improves"- Copyleft, 2009

True idiocy in succinct style. I vote that the new democrap mascot should be Copyleft with his head stuck up his hind end. Forget the donkey.
  • Oil isn't evil, its Made in the U.S.A.
"If Big Oil is unhappy, that indicates something good is happening.

If Big Oil is driven out of business, America improves."

I didn't know a business that runs on 7% profit margin was evil and wicked. I thought it was the institutions that run on 50% profit margins, like mafia-hosted loan sharks, and drug traffickers that were evil.

I guess "Made in the U.S.A." is only good for union-based auto workers, not domestic oil companies.
  • re: Trolls
Mike B -- Sounds like it's you who finds an unusual erotic sensation with Copy. You referred to him 11 times in 2 paragraghs. Obsess much, Single White Female? You and Joyce should go get a room and spend the afternoon making sweet Copy jokes. Copygirl...oooh yes...that's a good one, Joycie! Moar!

Copy -- you take some positions in here I agree with, some I can appreciate, and some I just don't get unless you are only trying to jerk the chain of the ever so touchy Republitards in here. The idea that driving US oil companies out of business is good for America falls in that last category I hope. You can't possibly believe that.
  • Remember This about Foreign Dependency
So When WWIII starts, how fun will it be to have an even greater portion of our strategic oil imported from Venezuela, Russia, and the Arab states? We simply may not get the oil at ANY price.
  • I would pay to see this:
"Copyleft will be ready to pull a rickshaw through the streets"

Again Copygirl, pay attention. Ask your professor to explain this to you. What do businesses do with their expenses? They included in the prices of their products or services.

So, let's test you and see if you were paying attention: who pays in the end?

    That's right!!! CONSUMERS
  • Houston Texas
What would REALLY be interesting is if the State of Texas actually suceeded like they have been threatening to...thereby taking a significant portion of U.S. oil/gas/chemical production with them. We'll see how fast the USSA attempts to hold them to the "union" at the point of a gun...and how fast the Citizens of Texas brings to their defense thier OWN guns.

Interesting times are in our future...
  • Why didn’t I think of achieving energy independence by shutting down some domestic refineries?
If you don’t see how it will work, it’s because you are too dumb to understand such a brilliant plan.

This scam will ensure the recession becomes a depression. Few understand how much our economy and wealth creation depends on petroleum. Petroleum isn't a drug in our economic bloodstream it IS our economic bloodstream. The cost of this boondoggle to our economy has been vastly underestimated, even by those who are really concerned about it.

LCS, there is footage out there of maxine waters plainly saying that very thing. Few noticed, and fewer cared.
  • "Big Oil"???
This appears to be a set-up for eventual government control (read another monopoly) on domestic energy supply. When the private companies are run out of business then the government will have to take over.
  • This will utterly DEVASTATE Houston.
Not only more foreign oil, but foreign gasoline and distillates as well.

Get ready to start pulling that rickshaw Copyleft! I've got my riding crop at the ready.
  • Oil companies invite Trolls
Copyleft sure does spend a lot of time trolling around Neal's comment sections. Does he find some unusual erotic sensation while leaving his asinine statements? Whatever! I don't think copyleft understands that people of the earth use OIL and that is not going to change any until there is technology in place that is able to replace it completely. We are going to be using oil for years and years to come. So apparantly copyleft prefers for foreign companies to be getting our hard earned dollars rather than domestic companies. Because when our oil companies start shutting down plants and foreign companies begin supplying us with more and more oil and gasoline, then our money is going to be leaving the country at a very fast pace.

So I don't think that copyleft either understands this or he doesn't care about the future of our country. Maybe he's just one of those people who wants to see the downfall of our great nation, because he sure does seem to be taking the side of every issue that would facilitate that downfall! Either he's willingly hoping for that downfall, or he's woefully ignorant and shouldn't be allowed to vote because of lack of mental capacity.
  • Tax On Big Oil
This will mean more dependancy on foreign countries just for us for our daily suvival.
  • Change bad, Tarzan go back jungle...
If the 'Progressives' say it's good, it must be so, right? Yeah cause all that new technology is 'shovel ready' and I just can't wait for my new career in the 'green industry'! Oh, wait, I'm a landscaper, I'm already green...if Big Oil is driven out of business, Copyleft will be ready to pull a rickshaw through the streets. We will pay a lot more before we pay a lot less. And then it just won't matter because we will have completed the transformation to a 3rd world country and that will make the 'Progressives' giddy, maybe it will send tingles up their legs! Dissent is patriotic, by the way.The DNC said so!
  • Wow, this is really bad -- for the American people
Wow, this is really bad for the American people. For those of you that thing this is good - Please go back and get some remedial training on our economy.

Now, this is bad because Gasoline prices will go up, heating oil will go up, and diesel fuel will go up AND EVERY THING THAT IS MADE using or with these items. Neil, you hit just the top of the issue. Everyone should be able to see how these taxes will be passed directly on to the consumer. Gasoline, heating oil and diesel fuel will go up, no argument. What people will not see is that – everything that is brought to stores is brought by trucks. That means that EVERYTHING will cost more. Plus look at how many things are made out of plastic or shipped in plastic. Plastic will cost more – so should I say it – The products will cost more. Even if we have alternative fuels such as wind, how will that help these trucks bring the products to market at a fair price? How are alternative fuels going to replace plastic?

This is going to HURT the poor and the middle class a heck of a lot more then it is going to hurt the EVIL BIG OIL Companies.

This is HUGE and most people will never understand………….
  • destroying the economy
Siding with Castro, Ortega, Chavez; pandering to Iran; friends with homegrown American terrorists; member of a church for 20 years where every week saw a sermon against America and hatred for whites...first thing he does upon gaining the presidency, he lets his Chicago cronies go for the money; second thing he does, does everything he can to wreck the economy and destroy the country he hates, with an approving Bill Ayers smiling in the background.
OK, why is it so hard for anyone to see that Obama hates this country and is doing everything he can to destroy it and to impoverish the people?
  • Unusual definitions of "good" and "bad"
If Big Oil is unhappy, that indicates something good is happening.

If Big Oil is driven out of business, America improves.

These are not complicated facts, Neal. Why do you keep pretending our oil consumption is both inevitable and indefeinitely sustainable?
  • So basically...
They are betting on the cheaper energy to be ready before our economy collapses. Lets just hope it happens in time.
