A RAY OF HOPE

As we well know, California is in some deep horsesqueeze. They need to come up with some serious cash to balance the budget, and luckily Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger refuses to increase taxes. So his latest idea to save taxpayer money is to deport illegal immigrates in California jails. Wow! A sane and logical plan from government? The only question is .... why have they waited so long?

The proposal will supposedly save California more than $180 million. It plans to commute the sentences of thousands of illegal immigrants and turn them over to the Feds to be deported.

Something tells me that there will be a lot of panties in a wad over this one. Besides .. how long do you think it will take the illegals to get back across the border once they're sent home ... and they'll be out of jail and ready to commit more crimes! What a state!

What others are saying

  • Way to avoid the real issue
California's budget problems are due to their system of government by popular referendum. The many "propositions" that have been passed direct portions of the state's budget towards predetermined purposes. 85% of all state money is automatically spent by this morass of referendums that have been passed. The state legislature only has control over the remaining 15%.

    LOVE it.
  • Ray of Hope
It's a stupid idea. These criminals will be right back in no time. What the state ought to do is put these felons on a train and send them to DC and let the feds take care of them. The feds are the ones that are supposed to secure our borders and they are the ones responsible for about 10 million illegal immigrants in our state. We Californians have paying for the unsecure US borders for years. It's about time the rest of the US pays for these illegals.
  • CLOSE THE BORDER
I don't wanna hear anything until then! And make sure that if this idiotic socialized healthcare plan goes through that illegal aliens are NOT covered!!!
  • Punishment must be more than "go home now."
Though I'm usually in favor of making it legal for alien workers to stay here (because I'm a selfish capitalist who believes my standard of living goes up if more people are creating wealth), it does seem wrong to release criminal aliens early from jail. If you commit a crime in the United States, the punishment has to be more severe than a simple "you get to go home now." This only encourages other aliens to commit crimes because the punishment is less severe.
  • Solution
Load them into busses and dump them at the main gate of the local military base. You know the army or Marines have the capability to retain them behind razor wire patrolled by armed soldiers until Washington DC has to realize they have to respond. If Barack, Nancy, and Barbara want them to be free to roam the streets of LA again, it will be their call not Arnolds.
  • Buh Bye
And don't let the door hit you on the way out.

Good riddance. My take is too little too late but it's a start.
  • This sounds like a great idea!
But won't those deported felons just cross back over the border and be back on our streets? Without a closed border California could be doing itself more harm than good here. Or maybe they are hoping they will choose to cross the border at Arizona or Texas next time around?
  • deporting illegals
This sounds like a workable plan. Just use some of the money saved to put snipers on the border. Then pay a bonus for every confirmed kill.
  • Keep doing it.
If you keep giving the Feds the responsibility of deporting, maybe, JUST maybe, they will act better on securing the border.
  • Big Giant Smokescreen
180 million dollars is chicken feed and won't do diddly to reduce California's deficit. And I agree with the previous comments that the illegals will soon be back. California's deficits are the result of out of control spending on welfare programs, the loss of manufacturing jobs due to high taxes and ridiculous salaries and benefits being paid to unionized state employees. Not to mention the incredibly bloated roster of unionized state employees. California cannot reduce its deficits until they lower taxes, cut public employee salaries, fire a bunch of worthless employees that would be on welfare if it were not for the government jobs, and cut welfare. Of course, this would result in the slugs going to Colorado.
  • Ray and Hope
Not a fiscally responsible solution. California's already broke, wouldn't be able to afford that much ammunition, not to mention the environmental studies on the effects of putting that much lead back into the ecosystem.
  • It's only part of the effort needed
The plan will only be effective if the federal government would just SECURE THE SOUTHERN BORDER. That would prevent the illegals from coming back.

When will we have border security?!?
  • Deport the Suckers
When insane times come....you have to resort to sane solutions. This is a solid solution and one that should have been in place since the first day. I say no to a fence or border patrol. I say YES to planting a 300 yard wide MINE FIELD. If they make it through that...they must really want to be an American.
  • Look, it's a start
I can't fault the state for at least trying. However, I second some of the sentiment on this board about the illegals coming back.
  • Ray of hope
Give them to the feds for deportation, have the feds microchip the illegals and when they come back across the border, don't bother jailing them again , Shoot them DRT.
  • Come on...
"Besides .. how long do you think it will take the illegals to get back across the border once they're sent home ... and they'll be out of jail and ready to commit more crimes! What a state!"

Aren't we just glad we're talking deportation here? The question of whether or not they'll return is true in any deportation proposal. Geeze.
  • A RAY OF HOPE
...Now, if only "Ray"... I mean Arnold would get the legislature to pass an emergency bill to go along with it, something along the lines of, "Any foreign national whose sentence is commuted under this act shall commit a capital crime by re-entering the State of California following deportation... and shall be executed by firing squad.
  • California Illegal Inmates
So...now if you're an illegal immigrant criminal, you've been TOLD BY THE STATE that you can commit your crimes in California, fear no imprisonment, get a free bus ride back to Tijuana, and allowed to come back and repeat the process again and again?
Yeah...that sounds like big California government. LOL
  • Will not work
So the criminal will be sent back to mexico, free to cross the border and commit more crimes until recaptured. This does not work without border enforcement. Throwing the chickens over the fence when your fence has holes does not work.
  • The Terminator is back
You go Arnold!! While you're at it make sure and round up all the ones on the street too. That will not only take care of financial problems but the crime rate as well.
  • Yes!!!
    Viva la migra!!!
