"Every government interference in the economy consists of giving an unearned benefit, extorted by force, to some men at the expense of others." Ayn Rand | | Nobody's listening. |

It happened just as we predicted. Around 12:30 last Friday afternoon the switches were thrown and America's television stations turned off their analog signals. All that was left was digital. We've known about this for over a year. For over six months virtually all of these TV stations were broadcasting announcements about the switch. If you watch TV even a little you've seen hundreds of announcements telling you that the switch was coming and that you needed to take steps to make sure you could still watch your precious boob tube. The government was handing out coupons whereby the dumb masses could tap the taxpayers for the cost of a converter box. There were volunteers out there attaching the conversion boxes for people who still haven't managed to master the ballpoint pen. Everything that could be done was done. And yet ... on Friday afternoon the calls came pouring in to the TV stations .......
"What happened to my soap opera?"
"Where can you get one of them converter things?"
"I can't afford one of them converter things."
"Where is Barack Obama's birth certificate?"
"Why didn't you warn us this was going to happen?"
"I have a right to TV."
"The government needs to do something about this."
We are presented with a great opportunity here. Let's get the names of all of the ignoranuses who couldn't figure this thing out by Friday and get them converted to digital ... with one condition. They surrender their voter registration cards. We have enough idiots voting in this country ... and since there is no Constitutional right to vote in a federal election, we need to find ways to cull the herd. Clearly anyone who couldn't figure out this analog-to-digital conversion thing isn't bright enough to cast an intelligent vote. Sure ... we need them. Someone has to cook the French fries ... but we don't need them voting.
If you have been following the news for the last week, you will know that Iran held presidential elections. Running up to Election Day, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was neck-and-neck with his challenger Mir-Hossein Mousavi. Then when Election rolled around, Ahmadinejad apparently won the election with 62.6% of the vote compared to Mousavi's 33.7%. Another four years of the mad mullah.
Looks like something fishy has happened here, Ahmathimgamabob had nowhere near that kind of a lead going into the voting. The Iranian people smell an Islamic rat. Street protesters have been demonstrating all weekend over the surprise defeat of Mousavi, who says that he has been the victim of "fraud" and "manipulation." Iran's supreme spiritual leader, Ayatollah Khamenei says that Iranians should accept the results of the election as a "divine assessment." (We have their "divine assessment) in a silo on a nuclear submarine in the Indian Ocean.)
Ok, is it really tough to figure out what has happened here? The only thing that Ahmadinejad cares about is power. In that sense he's not all that different than most of the people who serve in our own congress. Do you think that he was actually going to let a silly little thing like a general election get in the way of that? No way. Not with Hugo Chavez by his side and America eagerly waiting to appease him.
Makes you appreciate the integrity of our election system, doesn't it?
It would be no secret that I'm not fond of tattoos. It's also no secret that people don't five a flying donut what I think about tats. Someone has taken the time to map tattoo locations on the human body and code them with various warnings. Here you go. I think you'll like it.
While we are on the subject of loony dictators, let's talk about North Korea. Last week, the UN drafted up harsher sanctions against North Korea in the wake of its latest missile launch. As a result, North Korea says that it plans to "weaponize" all of its plutonium. By the way, it has enough plutonium to make at least half a dozen atomic bombs. Not only that, but the Foreign Ministry of North Korea threatened any country that stopped its ships on the high seas, which is part of the latest UN sanctions.
Tough spot. I'm not pleased with the man we have in office who's job it is to deal with this mess ... but I am empathetic. There are some tough decisions to be made in the coming weeks and months. Those decisions will either strengthen or weaken our country. The world wants a weaker America. Let's hope Barack Obama soon remembers that he's the President of the United States first, and a citizen of the world second.
When Obama was about to take office, his top advisors predicted that unemployment would stay at or below 8% if Congress passed his grand stimulus plans. In fact, the report was written by Joe Biden's chief economist, Jared Bernstein. So Congress passed his grand stimulus plans and guess what? Unemployment is up to 9.4%. Why is that? Because it seems as though Bernstein's report was "not aligned with reality."
You do know, don't you, that there were plenty of economists saying that Obama's economic stimulus plan would not only work but end up hurting out economy" Well, Joe Biden now says that "everyone guessed wrong at the time the estimate was made ...". No, not everyone, Joe. Just the people whom you relied upon to give you estimates that you wanted to hear, rather than those based on reality.
This is the same thing that is going to happen with our healthcare debate, folks. Last week I told you that the Congressional Budget Office ... sometime today actually ... is supposed to release its figures on the predicted cost of Obama's healthcare reform scheme. Democrats, knowing that this cost projection is going to be WAY more than anticipated, are already preparing the public to discount the CBO figures and stick with estimates from the White House. Clearly, those numbers will be far less daunting than those we can expect from the CBO.
The truth is that in Washington they don't care about the costs, either human or monetary. They care about the power. Nothing more. Power is the motivating factor behind government health care. These politicians know that when they control your healthcare they control you. All too many Americans are willing to give themselves to the government in return for healthcare. Sad.
Speaking of healthcare ......
The latest from Washington on the healthcare reform scheme. Republican Senator Chuck Grassley says that Congress will more likely support the idea of requiring individuals to buy healthcare insurance rather than mandating that businesses provide health insurance for employees. So there's a little bit of shift in the debate ... are Republicans willing to submit to the idea that government can require every individual to buy health insurance? If that is the case, then the logical follow-up would be to provide a government option, especially for the poor who can't afford it. But that is precisely what Republicans are against at this time. Hey, by the way, has anyone heard of a plan proposed by Republicans to reform the healthcare industry? Just curious ....
Meanwhile, over at the White House, Obama has proposed $313 billion in health cut costs. These cuts include things like decreasing payments to hospitals and that provide Medicare services. That's on top of the $400 billion in cuts that have been proposed for Medicare and Medicaid. Oh and we can't forget the $600 billion that has been proposed in the way of tax increases. We are talking about a necessary "down payment" for healthcare reform anywhere from $1 trillion to more than $1.5 trillion.
It's a scam, folks, and Obama knows that he has to get it done quickly because Americans are sick of outrageous government spending.
Do you remember Jose Padilla, a/k/a Osama bin Lopez? He was sentenced to 17 years in prison on terrorism conspiracy charges. Well Padilla claims he was tortured while being held nearly four years as a suspected terrorist, and he is suing the lawyer who drafted the legal theories supposedly leading to his torture. Padilla is suing former senior Justice Department official John Yoo who wrote memos on interrogation for Bush's Office of Legal Counsel. He was apparently subjected to sleep deprivation, temperature extremes, painful stress positions, and extended periods of bright lights and total darkness.
The reason this is back in the news is because US District Judge Jeffrey White of San Francisco has refused to dismiss Padilla's lawsuit. So this would be the first time a lawyer for the government would be held liable for abuse of detainees.
When can I sue the IRS for the torture they've visited on me over the years?
Nearly 700,000 people called a government hot line this week, upset that they couldn't watch Entertainment Tonight or Jerry Springer because of the digital conversion.
As of right now, the Democrats don't have the votes to pass Obama's government-run health insurance plan.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell says that Republicans' "right to filibuster" Sotomayor is still on the table.
Who is Frank Ricci? He could turn out to be a very important person in the case against Sonia Sotomayor.
Some of the projects to 'stimulate the economy' are completely bogus. Gee, didn't see this one coming.
Your tax dollars at work ... $50 million in stimulus money to buy fish food for farmers. Fish farmers, I hope.
Is the Obama administration seriously considering bulldozing entire US cities that are shrinking?
Here's a way to implement a free-market solution to healthcare reform while saving the taxpayers $5 trillion dollars. But that would make the Democrats very upset .. because you wouldn't rely on government for your healthcare!
Uh oh ... can Hugo Chavez survive in power now that he has upset the local unions? Some predict that social upheaval is around the corner.
Farmers are having a real tough time right now ... with all these cool temperatures. But don't tell that to the global warming crowd. They still believe the Earth is getting warmer.
The Tax Foundation has created a calculator so you can figure out how much more money your family will be spending thanks to cap-and-trade policies.
The UK spends over $80 million a year translating documents that absolutely no one reads.
