Have you heard about the standoff between California and the Obama administration? California's governor's office says that a politically powerful union has an inappropriate influence over the Obama administration. Why is that? Because the Obama administration decided to withhold billion of dollars in federal stimulus money until California reverses a wage cut for labor group workers. Now this wage cut between the California government and the home health care worker's union was negotiated. Both sides agreed. But the Service Employees International Union didn't like the idea of any union negotiating for a lower wage ... so they went to DC and complained to the government. Obama steps in and tells California that he is going to withhold $7 billion in federal funds unless the negotiated agreement is cancelled and the home health care workers get their money.

Governments run by unions. Change you can believe in.

  • re:joyce
yeah, it is. You can look it up as well as I can. I'm not your researcher.

"We have re-created our enemy’s methodologies in Guantanamo. It will hurt us for decades to come. Decades. Our people will all be subjected to these tactics, because we have authorized them for the world now. How it got to Guantanamo is a crime and somebody needs to figure out who did it, how they did it, who authorized them to do it, and shut it down. Because our servicemen will suffer for years." - Malcolm Nance, Chief of Training, US Navy Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape (SERE) School (1997-2001).
  • Mark
Where is it written in law that waterboarding is torture not to be used?

    It isn't.
  • Shocking...just shocking....
The world is "O's" oyster and America is His personal TOILET....Change we so richly deserve, Hope we have totally lost, and Yes we did (not know what the Hell we were thinking)!
  • Governator
Clearly Obama has never seen Terminator 2 or he wouldn't be messing with the Governator.
  • re:austin
UN convention aside, federal law also prohibits torture, as does the UCMJ
  • re:austin, Donna, Joyce
Austin - yeah, they did (21 October 1994)with reservations which were clearly broken by our actions.

Donna - nice, revenge and "they are worse"...clearly, laws were meant to be broken for only the "right" reasons and the "bad" people. Good luck with that approach.

Joyce - again, if the president does it then it's not illegal? that's what you're saying. Why was nixon pardoned again? You're excusing law breaking in the name of power and expediency. How very facist of you.
  • Mark and UN Torture Convention
    Mark,

If you would bother to check, you would see that although the US signed the convention, it was never ratified by Congress.
  • This smacks of Nazi Germany
but the sad part is this is modern-day America under the boot of socialist thugs. Ooops, make that "national-socialist thugs."

BTW--Dear Mark, the US DOJ has defined torture as having to watch Keith Olbermann on MSNBC for more than two commercial breaks. Details are becoming available as they break....
  • An example of WTF
    http://www.cnsnews.com/public/content/article.aspx?RsrcID=47976
  • Taxpayer Union
The taxpayers need union representation. Unions seem to get what they want. If not in a union, your cheese is in the wind these days.
  • The plot sickens
Hmmm...isn't SEIU in bed with ACORN? And didn't they both give huge sums to the Obama campaign?

The level of corruption in our government is making sick. Cracks me up how the drive-by media is always rambling on about some other country's corruption. They don't need to look any further than their own backyard for that.

Btw, gun owners beware! Look up HR2159, just introduced by Peter King(NY). If you went to a Tea Party, then, as a "so-called" "right-wing extremist", you are "appropriately suspected" of being a POTENTIAL terrorist, and the Fed will be able to waltz into your home and take your guns away. No warrant. No appeal. That's called "illegal search and seizure" where I come from. But, they will be doing it in the name of "National Security", so that supposedly makes it all OK.
  • Mark
If a President (any) asks their advisers, in this case lawyers, to write up an opinion and then takes action on that opinion, why should the writers take the heat?

We have to let the President have advisers and the advisers have to be free to state their opinions.

This attacking after the fact crap is just slowing us down.

If NOW we say no more waterboarding (which would be stupid) then fine, no more waterboarding FROM HERE ON OUT. But ya can't go back and prosecute. Torture has never been "clearly" defined. It's just been "opined" upon LOL! sorry couldn't help myself there
  • States' refusal
of stimulus money?! Why would states like SC and others say they don't want stimulus money? THIS is why!!! You reach your hand in Obama's pocket for your handout, and he reaches his hand in yours, and grabs you by your "privates". THIS is change CopyLeft beleives in!!
  • unbelievable!
Arnold needs to set up a face to face meeting to "work out their differences" with our dear president. Then he needs to grab Obama by the sack and lift it up over his forehead - Bill Cosby, Himself, style...
  • I already posted on this problem!
Here in "OBAMA WANTS TO CLOSE FAILING SCHOOLS:"
    http://boortz.com/nealz_nuze/2009/05/obama-wants-to-close-failing-s.html#comments

The Feds collect and distribute much more money than the states - presumig a state COULD AFFORD to give up Federal Funds, any public official who advocated it would be tarred and feathered under the claim that "It's OUR tax money, we NEED to get it back!"

BOHICA, and it gets worse each time.
  • Taxes and gov't
If the people in the US would do this one simple thing, it would cripple the effort of the gov't to spend spend spend. Don't let any taxes be taken out of your paycheck-stop giving the gov't an interest free loan. If you get a return at end of year, have your witholding adjusted so that you break even at end of year.Gov't might have to actually do what we do-don't put on credit what you can't pay for with your paycheck!!If you don't have the money, then you should not spend.
  • Torture
Mark, what is torture? Having a loved one call you from a plane that is being overrun by terrorists or watching two planes hit office buildings in NYC and one plane hit the Pentagon? I can't decide. How about 2,974 dead on September 11 versus 0 terrorists dead with water boarding? I say bring on the torture inquiries, let see Pelosi weasel her way out of what she knew and when.
  • Re: Mark
I did not mean to go anonymous there.
No one is immune to abusing power. This is why our founders tried to keep power away from a central point.
  • All an illusion...
Washington might be telling states what to do, but they are not the decision makers. Washington is being controlled by other international interests that wish to remain secret. Right now the United States is being liquidated. When all is said and done we will not be Americans anymore. American at heart maybe, but not officially.
  • Wait until Card Check!
I work in HR and spend a lot of time watching the Employee Free Choice Act. My employer is exceptionally generous with salaries, benefits, and working conditions. Yet many of the employees feel victimized and have occasional rumblings of starting a union.

One nanosecond after EFCA is signed my staff will unionize - and I'll be forced to negotiate and administer a contract. If my employees later decide to complain, then the government will foce me to pay higher wages.

    Its all over.
    Checkmate.
  • Guess it's time...
...to dust of the old descriptive phrase "Jack Booted Government Thugs."
  • re:anonymous
yeah, you're right. Regan was just showboating with that whole UN thing. He was an actor, after all.
  • RE: Mark and UN contracts
Any contracts we have with the UN are not binding because no other nation has jurisdiction over the US. UN contracts are just for show. They mean nothing.
  • contracts
The rest of the world is watching. When they see that our tyrant president and our corrupt government disregards contracts and the laws that govern them, then other countries will not do business with us because there is nothing to prevent the tyrant from voiding the contract.
Same thing that is happening with Chavez.
  • Kahlifornia
Kahlifornia is in deep doodoo. At least this union's employees are keeping their jobs. Kahlifornia just laid off 3,000 corrections officers. To put that in perspective, there are 3,000 corrections officers in all of New Jersey. And being how nasty and dangerous as Kalifornia prisons are, laying off 3,000 C.O.'s just made the state less safe.
  • re:joyce
yes, let's. She's shares blame if she was aware of this and did nothing.

torture is clearly defined. It was redefined by the previous administration.

As I said, if you espouse the notion of the rule of law and abiding by agreements made, then you should be all for an open investigation.

Or, you believe that as long as a lawyer tells you it's legal, it is.

    which is it?
  • Remember when
Remember when it was a *bad* thing for special interest to craft policy? Sigh. I miss those days.
  • Joyce
Great reply to Mark's statement. Right to the point. He will now take his toys and go home crying. Lets hope he doesn't return. Then again it's al-ways fun to beat-up a leftist.
  • SEIU
SEIU is the re-emergence of ACORN after the investigation into the $1million embezzlement case and the fraud/registration cases in 14 states.
  • Sure Mark!
As soon as we can all agree on what is torture and what is enhanced interrogation techniques. Ask Nancy.
  • So...
This professed love for govt adhering to contracts and obeying the rule of law.

Can I assume then you're all in favor of the US complying with the UN convention on torture signed by Reagan and federal laws against torture and moving ahead with the investigation of what we did to captured prisoners in the war on terror?

Awesome, at least we're in agreement!

If not, spare me your hypocrisy.
  • I Agree with Big Africa
I have always thought Lincon was one of our worst presidents in History.
  • goverment and contracts
We are in serious troble folks!!!!
  • SEIU question
What is the functional relationship between the Service Employees International Union and ACORN? We know Local 100 of the SEIU and ACORN were founded and organized by the same guy, Wade Rathke. We know SEIU gets to change 2008 voting procedures in Las Vegas and interfere with other labor contracts. We also know ACORN lobbies for and gets Federal funding to enhance its activities. As taxpayers, just what are we funding here? That's what we DON'T know.
  • Obama and Lincoln
...remember guys, one of Obama's heroes is Abraham Lincoln. Ironically enough a tyrant and an oppresive president with white supremacist tendancies and mentalities. As I understand, Lincoln wanted a centralized government and to do away with states rights and his corporate railroad buddies were right in the mix. Lincoln used slavery to further his cause, he really didn't care about blacks, he actually wanted us out of the country and he did not want blacks in the west. Lincoln was a lawyer before getting into politics and defended slave owners and never took up a case to defend slaves. He just used slavery to further a power grab, just like what Obama is doing and what Bush did with different issues.Keep in mind there was a bill around the civil war era to purchase all slaves and release them, just as had been done in the West Indies. Why fight a war over slavery when slaves could have been purchased and set free? Lincoln is a states rights nightmare and so is Obama.
  • Keep your money
Until States start telling the Federal Govt to keep their dirty money, the states will always be under the thumb of the federal govt.
I am a firm believer in holding our constitution up, but states cannot whine about their "rights" and then turn around and take the ill-gotten dollars of the Federal Govt.
It is a two way street. States are just as guilty as the Feds.
  • More control you can believe in.
I have never in my life seen the federal government so out of control drunk with power. It's something new every day! I see really bad things in our near future.
  • What this says to me...
...is that the economic problems are really not that bad. If Obama has time to squabble like this. Just as Bush's wallstreet bailout bill was not about a bailout or helping the economy or the (anti-American Patriot act about protecting America) but rather handing over more control to the federal reserve and selling fear in order to expand the federal government. Obama is full it and is doing the same nonsense, trying to convince people of economic threats(that they are worse than they actually are), then he goes and does rubbish like this all while his policies worsen the situation and his real intention is simply to grab more power for himself and the unions. Probably about 80 to 90 percent of what we see this administration and the last doing has more to do with expanding the power of government alone rather than making America a better nation by ahering to the constitution. Americans are being set up...for what ? I don't know. Americans are a good and generous people when not mislead and they do not deserve this oppresive treatment by Chairman Teleprompter.
  • Obama's Union Mafia
Why would Obama take directions from a union on whether or not to give California stimulus money? He isn't in Chicago anymore.
  • Do as I say
I thought everyone was supposed to make a sacrifice...
  • Cal unions standoff
The agreement between the state and the union would appear to be a legally binding contract. Isn't this just the gov nullifying a contract it doesn't like ala the AIG bonuses? Is any contract ever safe? If not how can we continue to do business in this country?
  • Wow Copyleft
Now you are suggesting that unions == the people? You really are stupid, aren't you?

This may be difficult for your limited intellect to comprehend, Copyleft, but most of us neither want to be ruled by unions nor corporations. In fact, we do not want the rule of men at all; we desire the rule of law. Law which treats everyone equally and impartially, and which applies to the highest and the lowest of society. Ideally, politicians should be stewards of the law, ensuring that it remain as unobtrusive as possible while protecting the public good.

Got that? Here we have a duly signed and negotiated settlement. The law suggests that contracts, freely entered into, ought to be enforced unless exceptional circumstances make it impossible (this is why Chapter 11 is necessary, for example). The law suggests that contracts should *not* be voided because the Federal Government wants to play favorites. By the way, though you also don't understand this, this is why the action to protect the unions in the Chrysler dissolution are also wrong; the rule of law suggests that secured creditors are entitled to the money before unsecured creditors, even when those unsecured creditors are rich and politically connected unions.

Come back, Copyleft, when you become a thinking person. Until then, stop trolling.
  • Change we can believe in?
    Copyleft,

Instead of governments run by corporations, the government is now run by corporations, unions, and special interest groups. That's Obama's change you can believe in - more corruption.
  • States' Rights
Here is the States Rights and sovereignty question again. Didn't this evolve into a shooting war in the 1860's even though the issue was never settled legally?

Texas and Montana are starting to assert their rights as States as well, Montana with not registering firearms or ammo manufactured in Montana and Texas by taking actual votes in their legislature whether or not to secede. I told my kids that either their kids or my kids grandkids will have to face the secession issue again.
  • This is asinine!
An already negotiated agreement once again being set aside by a president!??

    States rights down the drain.
  • California and the Obama administration
California should tell Obama to take a hike and get his nose where it doesn't belong.
  • Gasp!
This is AWFUL! Everybody knows that government is supposed to be run by corporations, not workers!

    The horror... the horror....
