What others are saying
'ASIAN' REMARK NOT RACIST...
BUT BASED IN FACT - THEREFORE, TRUTHFUL. WOULD IT HAVE BEEN DIFFERENT, HAD THERE BEEN A 'PAYDAY'?
It won't last
Don't worry, the idea of a day off for good grades won't last long.
Sooner or later, the underachievers (oops, was that insensitive?) will complain about being stigmatized, and the program will be eliminated.
It's sad, but it won't result in more students studying harder to become one of those to get time off.
tests
Hey, wish they'd do that here. My (white) 15 year old would get some days off, too.
Since education is the job of the students....
If the grades of students were treated like that of "income". The wealthy students with high GPAs should be taxed to support the lower "unfortunate" students in the name of fairness.
The sucessful students should have to work harder and much more to keep what they have already worked for. And those that have been unable to produce results. Someone should come in and "spread the wealth". This should also serve the socialist agenda in solving failing educational performance. (please note, i am mocking people, i am not actually serious)
it's a better use of my tax $$
I tutor kids, at my local gov't school for free. Because of those last two words, I can set some of my work rules, such as I will only work with kids who want to improve and no more than three kids at a time. If kids are behind grade level, chances are you have to actually figure out exactly where they stopped learning and backfill. Unfortunately, this requires some one-to-one interaction, with everyone else watching or goofing off. One teacher working with five kids who need help will result in a lot more focus and a lot less wasted time than that same teacher trying to teach those five kids while trying to keep the other twenty five in the room busy. Remembering the general atmosphere in my school, I think that days off or present is a great incentive. I also agree with David, but it takes a certain kind of student to have the initiative to go out and learn material without direction.
Wait
What is this crap? Rewarding the achievers? NO WAY!!
Great
Around Augusta, if a kid got a day off, the parents would be screaming who's gonna pay the child care.
.
Since I'm half Asian and half white, would I have gotten a half days off?
So much to ponder...
A good start
I like the idea of separating the kids based on ability, taking the ones who haven't passed and working MORE with them, not slowing down everyone else. Imagine if this progresses, so that when a kid demonstrates that they've learned something, they get to move on to new stuff, not just repeat it over and over until everyone gets it. I wish we'd had that when I was in school.
grades
Most of the problem lies in the realm of knowing what is important to answer the question. I have seen technical folks wonder over multiple choice exam questions given in other countries. But here, in the good ol' USA, we try to solve the problem rather than look for the only answer that can possibly fit.
more envy
Great, all this is going to do is cause the underachievers to resent the achievers. Can you say, "Welcome to the Democrat party"?
Not A New Idea
Schools have been doing this all over the country. In our local area, kids have to pass a state wide examination to meet NCLB standards. Kids who have passed their portions of the exam are allowed to wear jeans instead of uniforms on exam days and are allowed to come to school later in the day. Plus kids who are exempt from finals because of high grades don't have to come on testing days.

asians
The asian kids will be studying quantum physics on their own, while the rest are reading "The Rainbow Fish" in government school.
Time off for Asians
I am not sure about other Asians, but if my kids got the day off for getting good grades, I would congratulate them and give them something more challenging to do on their day off. After that, they can do what they want!
Time off
I went to a private school. If we earned some average grade with no grade lower than a B, we would get an "E" holiday. A day off that we could take anytime we wanted.
I recall taking one E day to work on a term paper; I recall taking one to attend a Braves game. It was pretty cool actually. Not sure how much of an incentive it was, but it was a nice reward/recognition.
I applause schools taking innovative approaches like this. Isn't that one of the goals of school choice?
Asian students
You don't see too many of them in gangs, or in mug shots wearing Obama t-shirts, or with failing grades. They would be facing severe punishment and ridicule within their society otherwise. Too bad the rest of our society doesn't follow the same code.
QUICK!
These kids are too smart! Get them out of the class room for a while. Buy them Xboxes and a flat screens! Hurry before they actually learn something!
While in reality I probably agree with Neal
It is inappropriate to assign a single person the traits that are ascribed to a group as whole (ie race, religion). It thought it was the Dems that were against individuality??
BTW this is a stupid idea. Kids should get good grades because they are supposed to.
Asians don't take time off
No, their Asian parents will make sure that their butts are in school desk seats on the off days to learn something else...
Class Rank
My daughter is ranked 42 out of 574 kids at her high school. Her brother told her that its because there are 41 Asian kids in front of her.
Time Off
Nahhh.. The Asians won't take time off from school.. Why do you think their grades are so good?
HAHA
Neil, tell em' brother..
Get down here and enjoy this south Florida sun. There's more than enough to go around.
