You knew this one was coming. Chrysler is not going to repay the taxpayers more than $7 billion it received in the form of a bailout. It has been confirmed with the Obama administration that this is included as part of its bankruptcy filing.

So there you go. Not only do secured creditors get the hind teat ... but so do the taxpayers. Who gets the front? The very union workers who helped destroy the American automobile industry. How wonderful. That's $7 billion ... gone. Poof. Never to be seen again by you or your children or grandchildren.

What others are saying

  • pebo
My final nickname for the president is PP, for parasites president; and his wife is MM for michelle the malicious
  • Bailouts.... pure socialism
This is one big reason why I am very much against taxpayer bailouts to the banks, AIG, or the Detroit automakers. The taxpayers just lost $7 billion dollars to a badly run company, and it's infamous UAW. If I absolutely have to choose between using my tax dollar to bailout private corporations or using my tax dollars to get free healthcare, then I'll choose the latter. At least I get something. And gifting 55% of Chrysler to the UAW, while shafting the secured creditors and bondholders, is just plain wrong. If I were a auto parts supplier I wouldn't want to supply Chrysler or GM with parts anymore. Bailing out a select group of private corporations ... what a waste of our money.
  • 7B...poof!!!
7billion divided by how many employees and suppliers per person?
Man'I'd love to know that number.
    I know I didn't get any.
I never bought chrysler and now I know for sure I never will.
Let that parasitic beast learn to feed off itself and let it die once and for all!!!
  • Ridiculous
I mean, are we surprised? I could've bet money that we were never going to see that money again. Good job tax payers, give yourself a pat on the back. Chrysler is thankful of our money.
  • Don't buy products made by:
Don't buy products made by facists, communists, marxists, socialists, leftwingers and corrupt unions. Buy American! Buy Fords!
  • Government to the rescue
Party affiliation means nothing. Let those who think remember that this is government and especially "centralized/group thinking". Government is centralized, Chrysler management is centralized, UAW is centralized.
My curiosity is which group is most against individuality.
  • Bankruptcy
AND, Neal, a new precedent has probably been set that will be used in future bankruptcies regarding secured debt making it as worthless and unsecured debt. Nice way to rewrite bankruptcy code without hearings!!
  • Re: Which Court
The Chinese will bring the Russians with them.
  • Which Court?
"Which court will handle the United States's bankruptcy proceeding?"

Um, A Chineese one, of course.
  • I'm a "domestic only"...
kind of guy. But the more that comes over the wire, the sweeter the Tundra & Titan look. I own 6 vehicles and all are domestic. That figure includes 2 Harleys. I am also largely anti-union. Their use was pretty much obsolete 20 years ago. But ya gotta stay in the money, correct? I condone the use of a bargining unit otherwise the power and greed to be would come out & plow over the work force. But the mission of a bargining unit is far different from that of a "union". Now we (the tax payers that don't belong to a union) are stuck with not only keeping the Fed in the money, but also the spoon-fed union members. I know, they pay taxes too. But their share that's contributed fits in my charge jar.
  • Looters

  • Government "Charity"
I recommend that anyone who feels, as I do, that the government has no authority to give our tax money away, read this, written by Colonel David Crockett, and entitled "Not Yours to Give."
    http://www.fee.org/pdf/books/Not%20Yours%20to%20Give.pdf
  • I'm on a "Soft Strike"
If I could pack up and head to Galt's Gulch, I would in a second. But - I've got a wife and two kids. I can't just go on strike.

However, I can decide to go on a "Soft Strike." I'm not 100% sure what I mean by that. But here is a taste:

    I won't buy union products.
    I avoid hiring liberals.
    I eat steak. Not tofu.
I flip the bird to people driving Priuses.
I don't listen to BS (Barbara Streisand).
    I buy country music CDs.

OK - I'm being a little silly. But, you get the idea.

So, what are more ways to go on a "Soft Strike" - for those of us who still need to hold a job and support a family?
  • Tarp Money
Why would we expect Chrysler to pay back TARP money when they won't even allow the banks to pay it back?
  • Ivan and Red
    Ivan understand completely.

Red I'm there now, just having a bit of trouble getting logged in.
  • American Cars
I gave up on American cars in the 80s with all the crap they produced. When the foreign carmakers (some built in the states now) continued to build a better car, the American carmakers wised up and improved their quality. For many, the UAW will be the final straw.
  • Getting The "Money Back"???
Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't one of the banks that got bailout funds try to GIVE THE MONEY BACK, and Obama said NO?

So now they're acting all "it's Chrysler's fault" that THEY won't give the money back?

Why isn't the MSM picking up on this hypocrisy?

    Neal? Help us understand!

    -
  • Stimulus
What fool believed that a dime of that “stimulus” money or any other money that’s been wasted in the name of stimulus would be paid back. What we have been witnessing since TARP, is massive government self preservation, plain and simple. Washington needs to be fired!
  • Elect Frahin Pann
His name is already a household word.

    Anybody except an incumbent.

As folks are beginning to understand, it matters not whether Dummy-crap or Repoopycan, only that the incumbents are "the best politicians money can buy" - except that none of us stoopid taxpayers can afford one of our very own.
  • Don't Respond
I agree with ignoring "copyleft". By reponding to him, you are enabling him to hijack the discussion into the realm of ignorance.
Be your own editor on these posts.
  • Chrysler
Guess I'm a Ford fan. I do love my E-150 econoline.
  • Ivan...
....man you hit the nail squarely on the head. You are absolutely right that Mccain would have supported this tyranny and legal plunder. When are people going to wake up?! What is it going to take? Guys head over to Campaign for Liberty...do it today!
  • twisted saint
Oh yeah. I just skip slopyleft's posts. Not worth my time...
  • To Joyce M/Blythe
Honestly I am worried about having a blog right now. People with views similar to mine are trying to lay low right now for the most part simply out of fear. The government calls people like me a "rightwing extremist". I know that the masses of conservatives believe that the DHS was targeting every conservative, but the real truth is that they are specifically targeting those that really have their agenda pegged. I am no more radical than any other conservative honestly, but I do know that I am a little bit ahead of the curve when it comes to what is actually going on right now. Once things really start changing more Conservatives will understand the problem we face and will stand up. The problem is that there are too many Conservatives out there as well as Democrats that think that this is just going to be business as usual. It ain't. All those crazy scenarios that just couldn't happen are happening. The reason these scenarios could never happen is because it would require insane amounts of corruption for it to even work. This is why people do not believe this stuff is happening even while it is in full swing. Our government has literally been working off the cliff notes of Horace Liveright's famous 1928 work, Propaganda. I wouldn't be surprised if Rahm has a copy in his suit pocket. Scary times people. Get with it or see it go away forever.
  • Ivan
its so hard enlightening people how the world "really" works, isn't it?
  • Will Not Buy GM/Chrysler
I have always bought Chevies--never again. Nor will I ever buy a Chrysler.

I will not support corporations and unions who stay afloat with billions in tax-payer dollars.

My next new vehicle will be a Ford or Toyota.
  • Don't Respond
    Folks,

Don't bother responding to Copyleft. He has proven time and time again that he simply does not listen. Or perhaps he chooses to remain ignorant. I have given up on him-- he's a lost cause.
  • $7 billion gone
But won't the $100 million that Obama wants his government to cut going to make up for the $7 billion?
  • Chrysler
Has anyone else heard the rumor that the next new model from Chrysler will be the "Obama" sub-compact.

Seems like it will only create more confusion when you have the Chevy "Obama," the Buick "Obama," Chrysler "Obama."
  • BD
LOL, no your response didn't post but you might have a point there!

Ok Ivan, I've asked before, do you have a blog?

    I'll probably regret this:

    http://libertarianwoman.blogspot.com/

    No trolls allowed!
  • King Obama
The charges that Obama is becoming a dictator have more credence every day.
God help our nation, if we won't help it ourselves.
  • GREAT GOVERNMENT GIVEAWAY
So now the UAW is on welfare!
  • To tshirt-doctor.com
You are starting to catch on. If McCain has won we would be doing EXACTLY the same thing just with a Republican spin added to it instead of this ultra lib spin. Obama is working for same people that McCain would have been answering to and that ain't the American people. They answer to an elite class of oligarchs that have a complete stranglehold on the entire world's economies. These elite are literally transforming world policies as we speak. This has been planned for so long and they have conducted business so well. They have actually fooled the masses. This is incredible what they have accomplished. Hitler would be so jealous.
  • Union Labor
I will no longer buy a single vehicle that is produced with a unionized workforce. I am sick of their antics and thievery. I will purchase cars and trucks made in southern plants with non-union labor.
  • Just like Amtrak
Chrysler and GM will turn out just like Amtrak, badly managed and continually in need of government funding to stay in business.
  • Corporate Darwinism
Chrysler's quality has been so poor for so long it would be more effective to ship inventory directly from the assembly line to the scrap heap. The only parties that would shed a tear if Chrysler went under would be its employees, our socialist government and, of course, hundreds of thousands of tow truck owner-operators who will now have to find second jobs.
  • Ivan
You are correct! They are trying to drive business out of this country so that the only one we can work for is the government! The President let the cat out of the bag in Sunday's NY Times magazine when he said "We" need less mathematicians becoming derivatives traders and more becoming engineers and scientists.

They are preparing us so they can tell our kids what they will do when they grow up.
  • A blow to the Commercial venture capital business
You can bet no one will be buying bonds, making loans or helping companies get off the ground if there is even a tiny little chance that the government might step in. More lost jobs, more lost revenue.

But it's a good thing according to the trolls!

    ...sigh....
  • Joyce
    Tuesday you posted this at 3:30;
"That a good portion of the UAW pension plans would be made up of these same bonds/bond funds?
So they are probably screwing themselves."

    I don't know if you saw my response because it never was posted online other than the archives. So here it is;

They're WAY too shrewd for that. Who do you think we're dealing with? We've got the Chicago Politics mixed in with REAL organized crime. They would have never put themselves in a position like that.
  • Yep...Amnesty Mccain voters.....
...the effects of voting for a non-conservative almost 3rd party type like Amnesty Mccain and splitting the conservative vote to give Obama the win when there were available conservatives like Chuck Baldwin and Bob Barr...no reason to complain now. We amongst the Ron Paul Republicans have been trying to warn about this stuff for about the past year and a half before Obama was even elected. You're KIDDING yourself if you think this is where Obama's radical lawlessness ends. Remember we're still in the first year.Mccain voters you made your bed, and allowed the media to convince you that REAL conservatism(Paul,Barr, Baldwin) could not win. We have a chance in the mid term to listen to Paul, lets see how many have the courage to insist that Republicans destroy the leftist neo-con world police mentality and return to traditonal conservatism and the constitution......it starts with overturning the Patriot Act and bringing troops home from everywhere and forging a new non-interventionist non-nation building foreign policy with secured borders. The ideas of the founders. Now I guess its time for the neo-cons to attack my traditional conservative stance, since they usually have a naturally occuring fear of freedom and responsibility.
  • I have purchased my last "domestic" vehicle! I will not in any way shape or form support the UAW and the goons who support this union!
  • Of course they won't...
They were never going to pay it back. The fed is only going to give TARP/Stimulus money to the companies they KNOW will never be able to pay it back. That is how they are killing our economy. This is how they plan to convert our economy to a socialist one. There really is no other way to handle this. They give the money to companies that are surely going to die. Once everything goes to hell they swoop in with a solution. Little did we know this was the plan all along.
  • bailouts
weren't we the people opposed to the bailouts? i think so.

and i believe we would be in the same position if mccain had been elected. they're all the same
  • Chrysler
This is exactly why I was upset when Bush decided to sign this bailout for the auto industry.Although, had he not, people would be blaming him for the failure of the auto industry because he did not sign it. He could not win, but I wish he had thought conservative on that one. At least he could have spared the taxpayers those billions, at least until Obama came in and spent it on them since he was so for it -which we know he would have.
  • RICO
The things that this administration is doing fit the very reason the RICO laws were written. The mob bosses were prosecuted for the crimes of their underlings. The Pretender-in-Charge may not have personally done any of the intimidation, but he surely had a hand in endorsing it. Even if he didn't personally order it his capos(staff) did.
  • Where did it go ?
Where did that money exactly go ? Did it pay off debt ? Wasn't anyone "stimulated" with $7B ? I would.
  • Chrysler
    Yep, saw this coming.

I know how Barry has told us that the stock market will become less of a driving force or whatever he said, at least I can pull my money out of there when I want.

Not the case here, eh folks? The government will take it and flush it down the crapper for you.
  • UAW
Well, the UAW may be a signioficant owner but owner of what? Since their interest is most often at odds with mangement, do you think they will be able to make decisions that will return the carmaker to profitability so the stock will be worth something to the UAW trust? We shall see but I bet not and the retirees of the UAW trust will be the individuals most effected.
  • Getting the Shaft
This is theft. The automakers couldn't get loans from traditional sources because those lending sources knew such would be sheer folly. So the government makes the loan anyway, when even Chrysler knew the company was toast. Now Chrysler is offering big sales incentives so that the public will demand the product of a poorly run company at the expense of well run companies. This is all a taxpayer funded attack on private enterprise. We are so screwed if this goes unchecked.
  • Guess what else I saw coming?
The fact that Neal would heap all the blame for this squarely on the government, and completely exonerate (or simply not mention) the greedy, incompetent looter CEOs who trashed the company in the first place.

No, they're the REAL victims in all this, aren't they? Hounded by those all-powerful unions, forced to accept bailout money at gunpoint by those scheming congressfolks... and now defaulting on the loan because they simply had no other options!

I wonder if there's some sort of charity fund Neal could set up to help these sad, sad victims of circumstance? Perhaps a "Save the Looters" foundation. We need to help these poor victims!
  • Seriously...
Somebody should seriously look and see if the UAW has given any money to the Democrats...
  • Criminal
This is completely against any bankruptcy law or presedent(sp?) ever.

Wonder how Lauria's lawsuit is coming?
  • BOHICA!
The great, almighty, omniscient, omnipotent POTUS is a great investor. He has given us a zero return on investment. All hail our mighty POTUS.

Why in tarnation is gub'mint attempting to run a purportedly "for profit" corporation?

I don't know either, but it'd be nice if they'd stop using my money (tax "revenue") to do it. I wonder how the Chinese will feel about the value of their US Gub'mint T-bills - if I were them, I'd not buy any more and I'd be looking to sell those I already have.

Which court will handle the United States's bankruptcy proceeding?
