SPECTER'S DEMOTION

Do you think that Arlen Specter has had his "oh crap .. what have I done" moment yet? Considering the fact that he has lost all seniority in the Senate, I would say that moment is coming soon if it hasn't already. The amazing part of the story is that Senator Harry Reid apparently promised Specter that he would retain his seniority if he jumped parties. Angry Arlen trusted the cadaver? He didn't take into consideration the fact that government is all about power, and his fellow Democrats weren't about to give up any of their precious power just so they could claim another desk on their side of the aisle. Either way, Specter is confident that Harry is going to "work it out" and that his assurances on seniority "will be fulfilled." Keep dreamin, Arlen.

So what may have done it for the Democrats? Debbie Stabenow says that many of her colleagues were irritated when Specter told The New York Times that the Minnesota courts should "do justice" by declaring Norm Coleman to be the winner of the Senate race against Al Franken.

Here's why this seniority issue is a big deal for Arlen Specter .. it limits his ability to get pork projects, money and jobs for his state. See, Specter was a senior ranking member on the all-powerful Appropriations Committee. He says, "My senior position on Appropriations has enabled me to bring a lot of jobs and a lot of federal funding to this state." Without this, Arlen believes that he doesn't have the "power" he has accumulated during his 29 years in the Senate. Without power, he probably won't be re-elected.

Wouldn't that be wonderful?

In the meantime ... does anyone see a Republican leader on the horizon? Yeah, I thought so.

What others are saying

  • arlan spector
He still not getting what he deserves. He was a democrat until the party was taken hits, and he changed to Republican to stay in office, after 29 years he thinks the tide is turning so he changes to dummycrat again. Talk about a self preservation scumbag. I say good riddiance, conservatives don't want him and President Bush screwed up. Rick Santorium is a far better man.
Rick should run again he can win.
  • Harry lied, Arlen Cried
What a pity. Guess it s---ks to be Arlen this week. Moral of this story is: Listen to Uncle Neal. If the good Senator had taken time to listen to the high priest of the church of the painful truth, he might have learned something useful about taking responsibility rather than trying to game the system.
  • Benedict Arlen
This couldn't have happened to a more deserving piece of scum. Glad to see it! Now be a good boy Arlen and maybe someday, you just might earn a chairman spot on, let's say, the dog catching committee. Even THAT'S too good for someTHING like you.
  • Specter and Pork
Spector's endless bragging about his "Pork Power" is the perfect example of why we need a Constitutional Amendment for Congressional term limits.
  • HAHA!!!
bwaaaaahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha...Hey specter, go get me a coffee and don't let it get cold. Oh yeah, and LIBERAL amounts of whip cream.
  • they should give him credit from the time he originally switched from Dem to GOP, since he never really was any help to the GOP.
  • Sphincter
Spector inorder to keep that sweet ride on the govt. teat in the Senate would have joined the communist party if need be. A man with integrity would have retired.
  • Will he give his famous speech?
At the end of each congressional session, Spector gives the same speech: "We worked really hard to get things done, we just weren't able to accomplish anything." That alone is reason to get rid of him.
  • a small bit of justice
He's 79. What is it with these old senators who can't let go? He could have retired, more or less with honor. I'm sure he could have gotten a cushy job on a board of directors, getting high pay to meet once a year. But his power was everything to him. How fitting that he's lost it. For the rest of his time in the senate, I personally hope Arlen is as welcome as a wet dog at a wedding.
  • Arlen better learn to toe the dp line...
..like a good little comrade, they aren't as tolerant of dissent as the GOP. He should have known better than to trust dp verbal promises, they can't be held to promises in signed contracts. Too bad he didn't switch 20 years ago. He's where he belongs now.

Arlen looks kinda like Yogurt(Mel Brooks) from "Space Balls," to me.
  • Once a Benedict...
Once a traitor, always a traitor. How are the Democrats supposed to trust him either? He voted against the budget primarily to show his independance, but why would they want him in a postition of power when he is going to put up symbolic centrist positions on issues.

I think his "Oh God!" moment will come when the democrat challenger beats him and he will have to look at running as an independant, ala Lieberman.

His day is done. I don't wish him ill, just wish him gone.
  • Maybe he should retire.
He seems to not want to suffer the indignity of a electoral defeat. Maybe it is time to retire.

Or is that the new deal he struck with the dems: A guaranteed primary win in 2010.
  • Specter's Demotion
This is justice. Yeah the Democrats are liars and can't be trusted anyway. But it's good that Specter is paying a price for his treason. It's even better that the people of Pennsylvania will pay for it. I am happy to read that Pennsylvania will miss out on opportunities and money because of what Specter did. They are ultimately responsible for his acts. Let 'em hurt. Lyn fromwembleypark.com
  • lol!!
    hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!
  • Sessions Replaces Specter on Judiciary Committee
What's funny about Sen. Specter's seniority demotion is that Sen. Sessions of Alabama replaced Specter on the Judiciary Committee, which questions judicial appointments, and Sessions will be prominent in hearings on Obama's Supreme Court nomination. The left hates Sessions!

What's ironic is that Pres. Reagan once nominated Sessions as a district judge, and Specter joined the Democrats on the Committee and voted against Sessions to keep him from being seated!

Liberal organizations like the ACLU give Sessions ratings of zero or almost zero. That really makes me like the guy.

    There is some justice.
  • Yeah, big tent Democrats my butt. They tossed out Lieberman because Lieberman supported the war on islamic-fascism.

Specter is getting what he deserves. I hope he loses in PA. He's a rat of the first order.
  • that's not the whole story
You forget to mention that Specter's first two actions as a "new Democrat" was to vote AGAINST a Democrat bill, and then to publicly say that he hoped the courts would hand the Senate seat over to Republican Norm Coleman. He probably would have kept his seniority if he kept his big mouth shut over Coleman.
  • Republican Leaders
I'd love to see Newt pick up the torch, but I fear that he's unelectable. One name I heard bandied about recently was David Petraeus, but I wonder if he has the economic chops to handle our current financial predicament.
  • Senator Sphincter
Ramblin...great use of the Star Wars reference. This kind of has a 'long ago in a galaxy far away' feel to it. I can imagine what kind of bumpersticker the distinguished Senator from the Quaker State might have on his car...something like, "I'd rather be a low ranking Democrat than a Senior Republican" or maybe, "Honk if you jumped ship, too!". I hope Steven Colbert has as much fun with this dope as the rest of us are!
  • Republican Leader
Yes, Newt Gingrich, he is the only one that has all the facts, and can stand up to BO in the next election. As far as Specter, he is getting what he deserves.
  • SPECTER'S DEMOTION
SPECTER "just can't get no respect." See how he enjoys life in the den of hyenas.
  • Ha Ha Ha
This is just classic. Arlen jumps ship and stabs the republicans in the back, and promptly gets stabbed in the back by the democrats. Awesome. Enjoy your 30 pieces of silver.
  • Star Wars
So, Specter feels like Lando Calrissian now? Harry 'Darth Vader' says "I have altered the deal. Pray I don't alter it any further." Bend over, Arlen! Now you understand how much I trust government!
  • pork
so you would have him stay a republican. who cares what pork he ripped off the taxpayers.
that's informative, neal. you don't care about pork, as long as he's a member of your party.

that's as far from libertarian as you can get
  • Surprise!
Arlen didn't even see it coming, how appropriate. This bozo got what he deserved, kind of like "no honor among thieves".
  • Republican Leader?
No, I do not see one, either. Actually, though, it was my hope during this last election that it would be the end of the republican party. I've been hoping that, with those posers gone, a fiscally-conservative party would form, one that would not give a damn about what people do in their bedrooms but would talk honestly about the legitimate but very limited role of government, and about how our tax money is spent. And after the repub party died, I was hoping that the dem party would follow. And no, I do not view the libertarians as an acceptable replacement to the repubs, althought the libs certainly are better.
  • ahh poor boo boo
    kiss my grits
  • Arlen
He may be saying "Oh, crap", but he is also saying "Whew!".

He will still have a position, a job, a salary and all the perks that go with.

Had he opted to stay a RINO, he would have probably lost all that.
  • Arlen Specter
Hey, Arlen…what’s it like looking into the “big tent” of the Democrats?
  • Oh, that's too bad...
Awe... At least the 79 year old junior senator will have plenty of time to get his afternoon and evening nap in, before he finally gets his one committee question. And then, the lights and microphone are switched off.
