California wants the federal government to back its loans. I guess this is what you would call "too big to fail."

Nancy Pelosi has managed to link global warming to environmental justice, saying the right to a clean environment is also a human right.

This sounds about right ... a new UN climate treaty will exempt countries like the United Arab Emirates and China while placing harsh restrictions on the United States.

How's this for change you can believe in .. The U.S. Treasury would own 72.5% of the "new GM" coming out of a bankruptcy with the United Auto Workers union owning 17.5%.

When it comes to Chrysler closing down dealerships, is Obama targeting dealers who contributed to Republicans?

Scientists believe that the Continental Shelf could hold more than double the amount of oil originally predicted.

Obama has put Eric Holder and Janet Napolitano in charge of reviewing whether or not our government keeps too many secrets from us.

Barney Frank says that he is opposed to the idea of creating a single banking regulator.

Should more federal stimulus money be going to the states hit the hardest by the economy? Well, if so, that is certainly not the case.

Barack Obama says that if we don't pass healthcare legislation this year, then it is never going to happen. He realizes that the honeymoon is fading fast.

How much did the taxpayers pay for Barack Obama to travel to Las Vegas and raise funds for Harry Reid?

We are really sorry that Neal missed out on the reporter from Georgia who was carried away from Air Force One by her arms and legs. Sure would love to read her letter that was so important.

The German government wants to restrict gun laws by subjecting gun owners to unannounced random checks of how and where they store their weapons.

What others are saying

  • @Joyce
Joyce (and others), the only thing that bothers me about drilling domestically is this -- are those jobs going to become union jobs? If so, who can guess how much MORE expensive our oil and gas might be if produced domestically? After all, nearly everything else produced here costs more than if it's produced elsewhere.

But I do agree that we need to drill here to end our dependency on foreign oil sources.
  • racial protests cancelled for four years
Let me get this right. It's wrong to manhandle a black, a woman or a journalist, especially if done by someone in government. If this happens, groups like NOW, the ACLU and the NAACP rush to protest, decrying her loss of civil rights. Except Obama is president, so it becomes acceptable. Not one chirp from Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton or the national media. My, these rules of when to get outraged are complicated.
  • Sotomayor & 2nd Amendment
What hasn't really come out yet is her ruling along with the two other members of her Appelate panel that the 2nd Amendment doesn't apply to the states (http://www.scotusblog.com/wp/judge-sotomayors-appellate-opinions-in-civil-cases/) and (http://gunowners.org/a052909.htm). As she and her cohorts claimed, the Supreme Court has not yet incorporated the states under the Second Amendment. Until then, she believes, the Second only applies to the District of Columbia.

Incredible that there are liberals out there that will try to re-write our Bill of Rights. I'm pretty sure Neal's pointed out before the absurdity that the libs want to argue this one Amendment -- they'll concede the Bill of Rights are rights reserved for the people, but then will try to back out of that with the 2nd Amendment.
  • GM
I like GM cars...I have a Grand Prix and a Trailblazer...and in a few years wanted to buy a Vibe (apparently won't be happening), but if bankruptcy and the complete annialation of GM and/or Chrysler and/or Ford is what it takes to get rid of the UAW, as far as I'm concerned, it can't happen fast enough.
  • B. Frank
I guess Rep. Frank (D) is against giving up any of his own power to sabotage the banking industry.
  • Obama's Resolve
Oh, I get what Joe Biden was talking about when he said that Obama had resolve. In the face of No Korea's latest threat, Obama was resolved to ignore it and rush forward with his plans for an activist Supreme Court nominee.
  • German gun laws & HR45
I think that it's bad that Germany is using that system to disarm its populous. But take a look at HR45

It does the SAME THING, and IT'S HERE.

Additionally, HR45 would require national licensing for clip-fed longarms and all hand guns. The final testing point for licensure is "Anything the Attorney General feels appropriate".

HR45 also allows the government to inspect your premises at anytime during normal business hours to ensure compliance with the law.
  • Stimulus, my foot!
So the state of California can't figure out how to pay its own way, maybe the taxpayers of Massachusetts (and the other 48 states) won't mind paying California's bills. Strach nevasse.

The grand, exalted, almighty, omnipotent federal government can't figure out how to pay its own way, either - get ready for a VAT. Remember, the lord and master Obama's promise not to raise taxes on us poor peons by "one thin dime" - nope, no lie, he's going for all the dimes, nickels, pennies, quarters, dollars -the BIG bucks!

Why is it that the states hardest hit by the recession are also the states that have gotten the fewest dollars in stimulus? We didn't kiss enough -insert 3 letter word meaning "beast of burden normally ridden into town on religious feast days".

My elected representatives in Washington did a magnificent job of spending money I haven't earned yet on a stimulus package - and an absolutely lousy job of getting some of it spent in MY state. I'm mad at them for spending the money foolishly, and I'm madder for them not bringing enough of that pork back home.

Hey, BO - quit riding around in OUR airplane (Our Farce Wan) when going out to raise funds.

I'm so glad the federal gubmint is going to own 76 trombones - er, 72 percent of GM - after screwing me out of retirement money by blowing off GM's bond obligations. Change I can believe in - "chump change"

Climate change: how arrogant that a bunch of "scientists" with 200 years of empirical data and a computer model can predict what the climate of a 4.5 billion year old planet should be.

Didn't the Germans do something like this back in the 1940's? But the 'guns' were Jews?

Maybe he played roulette to fund the government...always bet on black.
  • I'm burnt out honestly...
I have come to the conclusion that this country is not worth saving. We are so screwed and it gets worse every day. We are still so divided as a country we can't see eye to eye on even the smallest issues. I love what this country was founded upon, but it is clear we will never see justice in our time. Our leaders have brainwashed young soldiers into doing unspeakable things in the middle east. I would have never believed it if I had not seen it with my two eyes. This is being ordered. I am disgusted by it. I graduated from a military college and I was there before and after 9/11. It was clear after 9/11 that everything changed. Training was different. The overall tone was much harsher. I don't blame them honestly, but it got worse...way worse. Now we are starting to see the horrible things that our soldiers were doing to the people of the middle east. It is like a nightmare. This is not what my grandfathers fought for in WWII. We have become monsters. It is no surprise to me that the world hates us. Obama will not be able to fix it either. I have a pretty good feeling the world is getting tired of having to deal with us. We once were a force for good in the world, but that is long gone.
  • Fed Gov backing loans
The US backing loans is not worthless and does not equal the scenario you suggested. But, it does represent some other issues that may make it not worth it.

What CA is asking for is exactly what should have happened with residential lending. Everyone must understand that banks do not warehouse these loans on most occasions. They sell them again on the secondary market. The reason lending dried up was because of no confidence in the mortgage backed security. Maybe because the note was a subprime loan or because there were too much risks for default. Because of this, banks who made loans expecting them to sell to investors ended up holding on to all these depreciating assets on their balance sheets. Now the banks are in trouble because the notes are higher than the equity securing the debt.

All of this was a catalyst for the collapse of the market. But also got rid of all affordable lending. TARP attempted to throw money at the problem in order to make the market liquid again. Thats absurd! And obviously didn't turn out that way.

Now, if the government would sponsor a new affordable mortgage product backed by the government, this would give investors confidence in the security for the to buy it again on the secondary market. It would also improve lending capacity and sponsor more new home sales. This would accommodate the "buyer's market" we all love to talk about. The more affordable loans, the more buyers. The more buyers, the more sales. The more sales, the more comparable sales driving up demand and thus driving up home prices. Resulting in appreciation.

The government wouldn't be funding the loans. They would be warrantying them. This would likely cost less than half of what has already been spent for TARP. And is a feasible cost effective solution for naturally creating demand in the market place, reducing debt and increasing consumer wealth.

If the government would have done this 6 months ago, we would be getting dramatically different economic reports by now. And would be forecasting an end to the recession by mid 2010.
  • UN and "climate change"
If anyone needs further proof that the climate change/global warming crowd has any objective other than crippling the United States (further than it already is, thanks PBo), read this article.

Of course China gets a pass. They are 'bailing us out' of all the debt we have built up. And the UAE gets a pass because they own all the buildings here.

Climate change is real, and it's not man-made. I wish people would stick to science and not politics. I wish even more that the true scientists can have their research back when the green crowd is marched away in shackles.
  • Fed govt backing California
The Federal Gov't backing loans is worthless. If I tell everyone I'll give them money, eventually people realize my word is worthless. For the first time in my life, I am truly ashamed of my country.
  • Drill here drill now
And keep it here! I keep saying that. We can still pursue other forms of energy at a pace we can handle and reduce our dependence on foreign oil, lower costs and provide thousands of jobs in the meantime!!!
