Who said this? Hint: it's not Sonia Sotormayor.

And that's why I went into that in my opening statement. Because when a case comes before me involving, let's say, someone who is an immigrant -- and we get an awful lot of immigration cases and naturalization cases -- I can't help but think of my own ancestors, because it wasn't that long ago when they were in that position.

And so it's my job to apply the law. It's not my job to change the law or to bend the law to achieve any result.

But when I look at those cases, I have to say to myself, and I do say to myself, "You know, this could be your grandfather, this could be your grandmother. They were not citizens at one time, and they were people who came to this country."

What others are saying

  • Alito has it right
It is my job to APPLY the law... Nowhere in this statement does he even get close to implying that he will do anything other than uphold the constitution!
  • "wetback"?
    well geez.... he's only calling a spade a spade....oops!
  • Who said it?
Was it an escapee from a mental ward?

No? Ah, even more dangerous, a Democrat voter?
  • Slut Puppy
You're a PATHETIC class act. You don't even know how to read.
  • Wetback huh? Scott you are a REAL class act. Or do I mean douchebag?
  • Oooooh! Oooooh! Oooooh! Oooooooooooh! Oh wait, I have no idea...
  • Who's grandparents were illegal?
    Scott @ 1:02
Alito's grandparents might have legally emigrated to this country but Albeano Gonzalez's grandparents were real wetbacks, that came here illegally in the early 1900's!
  • hogwash
Where in that comment does Alito claim his decision-making would be superior to any other person's? You may infer that he would make biased decisions, based on that statement (even though he corrects himself and specifies his duty to apply the law), but it certainly was NOT a racist statement, unlike Sotomayor's. Her comment is the epitome of racism. Anybody who would support her, solely for the fact that she is the same race and sex, should look into their own closet racism.

That Alito quote was a huge stretch.
  • Pop Quiz
    Answer: Samuel Alito

“The more laws, the less justice.”
    Marcus Tullius Cicero

Sensing the Roman Republic’s end was inevitable, Cicero also stated that “the Republic, the Senate, the law courts are mere ciphers and that not one of us has any constitutional position at all.” In this instance cipher means nothing or a non-entity having little or no value. Our current Executive, Legislative and Judicial branches eerily resemble the Roman Republic leadership.

In the USA today, myriad laws often bind true justice. Take hate crimes for instance where similar crimes achieve judicial finality with dissimilar sentencing. Any justice abandoning the Constitution in their own favor will further undermine this great country and have all of us follow the Roman fate.

PS. I'd place my bet that Samuel Alito's grandfather and grandmother emigrated to this great country legally.
  • Alito
    It was that racist... Alito.

Yes, I'm joking, I don't think either Alito's or Soto's remarks are racist, and it appears that Soto's remark was largely taken out of context. Doesn't matter anyway, its a lib replacing a lib.
  • Who?
    It was definitely Samuel Alito
  • Message to Club
don't you get it? the response was impartial - as was the point. we are talking about the highest court in this country charged with interpreting law through the lens of the constitution, without partiality to any one group, or political party.
  • My first thought was...
...the Honorable Alberto Gonzales. It's too bad he wasn't the correct 'shade' of brown for the Lefties.

Speaking of shady, can Boortz listen please politely enlighten this pro-illegal immigration attorney,
    hxxp://immigration.change.org/blog/view/sotomayor_and_scalia_a_brief_history_of_whiteness
who seems convinced that Scalia's quote qualifies Scalia as a racist, and conservatives as hypocrites for not being outraged, as to the flaws in his argument.

I would, but time is short, and duty calls.

    Great show, Neal!
  • Who said this?
If I recall my history I think it was said by Oliver Wendell Homes Jr.?
  • Pop Quiz
That enrages me. No This couldn't be my grandmother or grandfather. Not a chance. Why? Because mine came through Ellis Island on a boat waited and waited appropriately for the proper naturalization. What kind of idiot statement is that, But I have to say to my self, and I do say to my self... Self? this guy who wrote that could be out there making kids.. oh geez.. there goes the gene pool...
  • political posturing and probably a lie
Yes, Alito. Olberman led off his show with these quotes last night, as if to absolve Soto of the problem.

But not so fast, Keith. I think it just reveals the political nature of the confirmation process: clearly Alito had conservative support and these comments were directed to get democrats on board. And the cynic in me questions whether he was truthful.

Soto is another story. No question she meant (means) it. And when you publicly say the appeals court is where policy is made, while admitting you should probably not say so, it's clear it is really how you really feel.
  • Balderdash
Seriously, this comment board looks like a round from that game. If you haven't played it (board game) do so, its a great party game and the main objective is to see if you can BS good enough to fool your friends into picking your answer over the right one.
  • Who said it?
Adolf Hitler 1941; upon learning his mother's uncle was a Jew from Poland. He had made the laws and would inforce them no matter. His told this to Eva Braun as watched home movies picturing the Marx Brothers.
  • So, what's the point??
I don't get what Neal/webwench is trying to get at with that quiz. Is she implying that the above quote is on par with what Sotormayor said?

No where in the above quote does it say that the judge's impartiality to the case will be compromised. In fact, it says the opposite, it says "it's my job to APPLY the law. It's not my job to change the law or to bend the law to achieve any result."

    Pretty lame.
  • Who said it?
    Benjamin Cordoza
  • re: immigration
The only thing that matters to me regarding someone entering my country, regardless of when they entered, is, did they obey the law or did they break in?
  • Alito in response to Sen. Coburn’s request to describe himself during confirmation hearings.
  • Samuel Alito.
  • Justice....
My first thought is that it was Clarence Thomas, but it is actually:

    Samuel Alito
  • Scalia
  • answer
    Samuel Alito
