MAYBE THE REPUBLICANS ARE STARTING TO GET IT?

The Republicans are starting a new outreach initiative. Basically, they know that their party is hopelessly screwed. They can't save themselves; they can only hope that the Democrats screw up enough to make the Republicans not look as bad.

But they are making an effort, nonetheless. Will it work? Well, this National Council for a New America launched an open letter to the American people. What is interesting about the letter is what was left out: illegal immigration, same sex marriage, abortion .... all of these issues that have the Republican Party completely handcuffed.

Now I have a strong personal interest here ... but I truly believe that if the Republican Party would work to understand and then promote the FairTax the American people would respond very positively. They could have the Democrats on the run. Am I dreaming here? Your thoughts?

What others are saying

  • John Galt44
So, if I hear you correctly, there are enough people of faith out there for the GOP to win, if only they would nominate the right candidate. Good luck with that.
  • GOP Doesn't Get It
Libertarians, God bless you. Your problem is the same that muted Rand. Guys (& girls) first thing is: there is God, not “a God”; God. The fact that you choose to believe or disbelieve is irrelevant, the vast majority of Americans believe, that is have Faith. We are tired of being diss’ed because of our faith. You need to get beyond the moral smugness of having no morals. Besides the Democrat’s have a lock on that.
Second, the Fair Tax ain’t never gonna fly. Get over it. The current tax structure works because it is for all intents and purposes hidden. Out of sight, out of mind, and the fact that most folks get a nice check (the 21st Century equivalent of a savings account) at the beginning of the year is a plus. Nobody wants to see their hard earned dollars pissed into a black hole every time they make a purchase. In the immortal words of Sarah Palin, “Ya can put lipstick on it but it is still a pig” or words to that effect. The problem with the fair tax is you have to look at it several times a day, every day. I already pay a 10% consumption tax to the state/county every time I go to the store and you want to slap another 23% (or more depending on whose analysis you read) on top of that! Nope, ain’t gonna happen.
The GOP, according to the referenced article, is trying to rebrand itself by leaving out moral issues, immigration and adding nationalized health care: Sounds like they want to be Democrats. They tried that in the last election with McCain the moderate, that didn’t turn out too well and neither will this neo-GOP initiative because it is being touted by the same folks that lost the last election.
  • The Republican Party
Politics is about winning. We have two major political parties in this country. One of them is utterly pragmatic, and will say ANYTHING to get elected. The other has principals, and would rather lose an election than abandon their principals.

I think the solution is easy. Get elected, and THEN you can work on the issues.

Ronald Reagan brought tons of people to the "Big tent" of the Conservative movement. He did it by articulating an attractive policy, and sticking to his guns. He believed that when people voted for him, that they were voting for his ideals. So he articulated those beliefs, and the people chose...and he won.

Every time that conservatism is presented, it wins. Isn't that what this is all about?

Abortion is a terrible thing, but the alternative is bad too.
Immigration is already covered under the law, uphold the current laws. No change needed, just enforce the ones that we have.
Gay rights? That is a personal choice, NOT a federal matter.
Drugs? Should be decided by the states, NOT the federal government.
    Win first, and then decide.
  • rdavis11@suddenlink.net
    Neal,
While we're getting the truth out here..what government schools, Pennsylvania Ave., and Wall Street haven't handed out to Main Street, I think we can add some more asphault sinking us: Madison Avenue. Look at what people will see on television or in print and buy or not buy, the messages we send to your young people, the clogging up of internet speed thanks to spyware and malware. If Obama isn't busy enough, maybe he could 'shrink the size of Madison Avenue?' They don't get nearly enough credit for their indelible fingerprint on our economy and our culture.
  • Fair Tax
Neal, I agree, If the Republicans grabbed the FAIRTAX by the horns they would surpass the democrats in 2010! The problem is that most republicans are no different than democrats.
  • The new Republican Party
You my say Iam a dreamer but Iam not the only one. I hop some day you wil join us and the county wil be your's again!
  • neals position on abortion
Ill just go ahead and tell you what neal wont tell you or is afraid to tell. The reason he wont debate abortion is because he knows hes at the losing end on this one. There is no way on earth that neal can stand up as the so called talk master and beat an informed person on the subject of abortion. I for one could squash every one of his little arguments like stepping on a cock roach. So dont get upset that neal wont debate the subject. He is only taking the path of least resistance which is ok with me. I would love to see someone have the right to take him down to the mat and pummel him on this issue but the great and mighty talk master doesnt dare trodd on this ground. Some day he might gain the courage to debate but for now just let him stay in his comfort zone and just laugh when he calls you stupid for standing up for life. later

Where's the beef? Ican't trust anything that involves McCain, and why is Newt and Palin not involved?
  • What conservative teach their kids and what they stand for
Here is a little essay that was going through my mind.

    Will my children;

Will my children be honest and hard working?

Will my children try to make their life better or will they be complacent?

Will my children see people for who they are (good or bad) or will they unfortunately fall into the norm of bias?

Will my children stand up for what is right, freedom, the weak and our constitution?

Will my children stand tall and speak well?

Will my children say I can instead of why do I have to?

Will my children have the sense to stay away from bad habits, drugs and crime?

Will my children earn the respect of their peers, supervisors, subordinates, friends and acquaintances?

Will my children give more of themselves than they ask from others?

Will my children be able to look in the mirror and answer these questions?

    I do daily.

  • Republicans Are Stupid Too
Republicans or better called Republi-Crats are also part of the problem so don't look for any help there because they are STUPID TOO! 3rd Party is the only hope!!!!!!!
  • Rethinking
The republicans have crewed themselves. You know why? Because although Bush, in my opinion, handled issues such as foreign policy and social issues well, he handled the economy like a liberal. The recession has been coming since Clinton, but bush passed stimulus packages similar to Obama's (although massively smaller) which only increased the deficit. We need to stop spending and pass the fairtax.

I'm worried about this...I want to be a doctor, but it looks like the healthcare profession is about to be flushed down the same toilet that education was...by the time I'm old enough to have a family and start my life, I may find that I no longer even have the right to do that.
  • Republican Outreach
I would tweek it, drop same sex marriage and abortion, and the religous nut jobs, add illegal immagration and the FairTax.If the Republican leaders can shake off the Religous cocoon that they have wraped themselves in and tackle issues that actually have traction they have a chance.
  • Keystone of Republican Party
You are right about the fair tax, It would give immediate credibility to the party as the one concerned about the citizens. How about a constitutional admentment for a balanced budget.
  • You can leave abortion behind
I just wanted to say that the abortion debate is a fundamental plank of the conservative movement. Trying to get rid of it or even to down play it will only drive the base further away.

I think that we learned the lesson of what the base will do if they aren't catered too in this past election. McCain is such a liberal Republican that a lot of the base refused to vote for him. Conservatives traditionally stand on their principles. That is part of what makes them conservatives.

The country is split almost directly down the middle in terms of ideology. Almost 40% are in the liberal corner and almost 40% are in the conservative corner. The rest are center leaning right. From a marketing perspective (that's what I do) the Republicans need to differentiate themselves (move right) instead of trying to compare themselves to their competitors. Anyone who holds their competitors up as the standard and then compares themselves to it, will always lose.

I agree with your agenda otherwise. I just firmly believe that if you surrender the abortion issue, then you will surrender the base as well. It's the law of unintended consequences. It'll probably be the start of a third party.
  • Abortion debate
As long as they get rid of the "blob" (to quote a liberal) before they can vote for a democrat then I am for it!
  • Mih
Disagreed. I do not believe it is the same sex marriage, illegal immigration, or abortion getting themselves in trouble. I believe it's selling themselves as moderates. Working across the aisle with the left. And constant media harassment that is screwing the Republican party.
  • Abort-a-Lib
    >>>"Since the unborn child has not yet developed the ability to think it has not developed a self."<<<<

Well, the typical liberal has not developed the ability to think either, and that we have evidence of unlike with an unborn child.

Come to think of it, I kind of like this new litmus test. How about we start by aborting the 62 million + morons who voted for OBozo.
  • @Jimmy
Actually it is debatable. I'm not saying it is my position, but that argument can be made to justify that freedom being allowed to people who do hold that belief and it would not be my place to deny them that right.

Also people with Alzheimer's still understand the self, they just don't remember the past, they are still aware of the present.

Who can say that the mentally disabled are not aware of the self? They clearly show thought, maybe not of the highest level, but not enough to deny existence.

How would you say that the elderly don't understand the self? They still think. They may suffer from dimensia but that doesn't negate their awareness of their own existence.

So the only case where they would no longer exist or in this case still be alive would be the vegetables. How else can we pull the plug on people who are "brain dead"/vegetables? The law already allows for this.

When being indoctrinated by the Church, one of the biggest reasons for being anti-abortion was the slippery slope fallacy(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slippery_slope) that legalizing abortion would lead to euthanasia, then mercy killing of the disabled, till we get to the point where society eventually kills for things such as the flu or for vanity.

The modern Church is actually quite cruel. Using their "Right to Life" mantra they keep "saving" infants with painfully crippling diseases and claiming them as mercy ministries. Would not the more merciful thing be letting that child die painlessly before it became aware of the painful and short existence it would have? Is it not selfish of the parents to intervene in keeping the child alive through torturous surgery after surgery?

    I give you this example:
    http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/bubble/

This child was tortured for years and lived in constant terror of death. A lot was accomplished in the name of science by keeping this boy alive, however he constantly suffered. How is that being merciful? It was selfish of his parents and the doctors to torment him by keeping him alive artificially.

My personal belief on abortion is that it is wrong and that I should not do it nor condone it. That doesn't mean that their should be a law against it. The proper method for combating abortion is evangelism and converting people to your belief, not legislation.
  • Thought process
The mentally disabled, senior citizens, and Alzheimers patients don't exactly have "no" thought processes, they just are not capable of expressing them. They might be random. But there is definitely brain activity of some sort, science has yet to read them.

And again I say in this day and age of multiple forms of birth control, rubbers and the morning after pill any woman who still needs an abortion is stupid. There are very very few exceptions to that.

But like Lee said, we are not going to change any opinions here. It's just a matter of how badly do conservatives want to get rid of the Dems in Washington? (beginning to wonder if it really matters)

If you do want them out, any time soon, you are going to have to find some way past this abortion issue. You can still have your belief, just don't chase everyone else away and think of it as an opportunity to educate people about making the decision NOT to have an abortion.

And LH, never doubted you for a sec, wink wink.
  • Verbose
Boy, you people on one side or the other of abortion are awfully verbose. If you don't believe in abortion, don't have one...nuff said.

And Club-a-Liberal, the Republicans don't have to lose their stance on the afore mentioned issues. But if they don't ease up on them some, they will get eaten for lunch. They are alienating a LOT of people.

Who gives a crap if the Dems give up anything or not? I'm just saying, if the Republicans don't lighten up some, THEY WILL LOSE.

That is one whiney-@$$ed stance, though..."why should we give up anything if they won't?" SO THAT YOUR PARTY CAN SURVIVE, dimwit!
  • Yall hang separately.
Looks like yall are killing each other off handily, while the dp/left laughs their *sses right off their shoulders.

    I think I'll go fishing.
  • The Republican's conservitave problem.
The problem with the general GOP stance on issues such as abortion, gays, and drugs isn't in their base arguement. We should, as a moral people, work to keep abortions to a minimum, define our words so that they mean someting, and try to keep drug use to a minimum. The problem with the GOP stance is the government. It's the problem with the Democratic stance as well, and that is just the problem. The reason that the Republican Party cannot present themselves as a respectable alternative to the Democrat Party is because they are not one. The Libertarians cannot get their act together and understand the importance of national security and the unfortunate compramises that sometimes arrise, such as protecting Japan and Germany and Korea and others so that maybe, just maybe we won't watch another generation get fed into the meat grinder that is modern war. The battle against Islamic extremism is the same concept, different reasons. The Republican Party is disarrayed because they lost the Libertarians, the ones who give them a different voice. And they did this to pull in the so-called social conservative. In this, they have cost themselves. America works best when it channels human nature rather than attempting to control it. Only when Rebulicans relearn that leason will they achieve the power they desire. The thing is, then they have to give it away. That's always the tricky part.
  • Alan
No, I don't support those things. That violates the other portion of the Constitution that protects private property. Also, just because you have swine flu doesn't mean that you deserve to be treated for that swine flu on the dollar of the taxpayer. It's a private service that isn't a required service. They've already established that swine flu can be remedied with Teraflu and not hospitalization. I'm also not in favor of childhood education. Where does it say in the Constitution that life means you have to be educated or you're not a living being?? Lastly, you're right. I do NOT support torture and have no interest in living that lifestyle as an American.
  • Big Bus
Nice rant. Do you really think you're going to change anyone's mind about abortion here? Everyone knows the arguments, some of us just think that a woman, not the government, should get to decide whether she will bring a fetus to term. Some of us might think that's about as personal a decision as it gets.

Several self-identified Libertarians have stated below in various ways that as long as the social conservatives insist on including their morality planks in the GOP platform, the GOP can count us out. I don't think we're asking for a debate on the merits of abortion or gay marriage or school prayer, etc. We're saying if you insist that those issues stay in the agenda, we're voting Libertarian. This is not an argument, just an FYI.
  • McCain and Palin
So John McCain has "reached out" to Sarah Palin?
Well, after the way he and his people treated her after he threw away the election, I hope she keeps his hand.

    In a jar.
    On her desk.
  • Joyce
Thanks Joyce. Sometimes, I do chime in with deep thought. However, I will support the right to abort Gavin Volaire and any of his offspring!!
  • Rob
I really am interested in your statement, "Since the unborn child has not yet developed the ability to think it has not developed a self."

So, you're saying that vegetables, mentally disabled, and senior citizens that have Alzheimers are also not human as well. That was a ridiculous claim. The ability to think does not dictate the existence of a human life.
  • @ Jimmy
Then you must support universal health care, early childhood education, and are against torture and must be against all wars ... "because we believe that life is precious and should be protected regardless. As a conservative, I would fight for the protection of life whether they were unborn or 45 years old."

if you read between the lines he's asking for consistency! (actually he lays it out for you those exact words)

If you're so pro-life, you must be for improving that life here on earth ...
  • Big Bus Rebuttal
The pro abortion defenders are equally inconsistent. List all the rights you have: free speech, assembly, religion, arms, life, liberty, happiness, etc. Isn’t it odd that you don’t have the right to be born? You can’t enjoy any of those rights without being born so what is the point. The libertarian argument would be that you have a right to life, thus to be born, therefore abortion is wrong. As for the heartless conservative POV- that is BS. Churches, through members volunteering and donating money, have provided assistance to the needy long before the modern liberal showed up wanting to take your money for the needy. From a libertarian POV illegal immigration and same sex marriage can be defended, but I disagree that abortion meets the libertarian tenets. If we can just change the definition of “marriage” why can’t we change the definition of “birth.”
  • Cogito ergo sum (Big Bus 3)
I point you to Constantine and the Spanish Inquisition. The "Christian" Republican party is just as draconian.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constantine_I_and_Christianity

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_Inquisition

Big Bus, I remember being taught all about the absolute truth that you are trying to defend. It was hammered into me during high school youth group. I'm afraid to inform you that it is religious propaganda. Oh and the United States and the constitution were not founded on Bible, that too is religious propaganda. In fact the constitution is a rebellion of religious thought and instead the Enlightenment Movement which also started the French Revolution.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_Revolution
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Age_of_Enlightenment

The constitution is based more on a Social Contract and the belief in one self and ones write to property.
  • Cogito ergo sum (Big Bus 2)
Enough of the philosophy, how about some counter theology.

In the Old Testament God himself was against government. As far as God is concerned we should be a theocracy. In first Samuel the Israelites demand that Samuel anoint a King, Samuel asks God and God allows the Israelites their king, but in doing so establishes that they have rejected God.

So thats the Old Testament view of government. Now lets look at what God has to say about it in the New Testament:

    Mathew 22:21
"Give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's."

This is a clear biblical separation of church and state. Meaning keep your absolute moral crap out of government that would be over those that are not believers.

Instead the bible offers you this as your purpose:
Matthew 5:13-16: "Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven."

So as a Christian you are supposed to be a Salt and Light in your own life and allow the Pagans to live their lives in piece. That the pagans may find salvation in your example, not in draconian laws enforced on them by religions fanatics. The next lesson that Christians forget is:
Mathew 7:3-3 Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 4 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye.

The Bible clearly establishes how Christians are supposed to behave in a political forum. The conservative movement in America is anti scripture and does a disservice to Christianity. Instead of being salt and light the Christian wing of the republican party makes themselves out to be hypocrites and in so doing destroys all credibility and also gives God a bad name by example.
  • Fair Tax and Republican Platform
Just ask anybody at random if they think there is some part of the government that is wasteful. Liberals will reply, "the military," and conservatives will reply, "welfare." If not those two, then something. the point is, EVERYBODY thinks that there is at least one part of the government that is too big.

Fairtax allows EVERYBODY to protest with their consumption. Either stop spending completely, or buy the cheap stuff like Sam's Club cola instead of Coca Cola. The liberals I have talked to have said that buying less so that the war is not properly funded is intriguing to them, but they lose interest when they realize that every other program will not be properly funded. Every conservative I have talked to is the inverse.

    And another thing...

When it comes to abortion, are you interested in making it illegal, or are you interested in making it rare?

Step one: overturn Roe v. Wade and states will have the CHOICE to make it illegal or not. Some will, some will not. Hey, New York, California and Massachusetts do not have concealed carry laws. No big deal, I refuse to live there. If your state makes abortion illegal or not, you can choose to stay there or move elsewhere depending on your stance.

In addition, overturning Roe v. Wade will defund abortion on demand. If there is no court decision "making it the law of the land," then the feds cannot fund it.

You want real results, impose the same restrictions on a another currently "legal" product on abortion. Such as warning labels on cigarette packages. Make Planned Parenthood put the depression, suicidal tendencies, breast cancer, et al statistics associated with their product and many a mother will change their mind. If I am wrong, then I guess those who go ahead with an abortion are just as stupid as smokers who smoke despite all the evidence that smoking is bad for them.

I am convinced that life begins at conception therefore I should be called pro-life. I came to that conclusion through biology and science, not my religious beliefs. But I also believe in God giving man free-will. I used my power of logic and reason to determine right and wrong in this case. I trust my fellow man to come to his own conclusions given the same information. If my fellow man comes to a different conclusion than the one I did, that is between him and God. If he wants to play Russian Roulette with his soul, let him. That also is between him and God.

I do not pretend to be another person's advocate when it comes to God and I do not want anyone else pretending to be my advocate when it comes to God. What happens between God and me is between God and me. I will keep my nose out of your business and you will keep your nose out of mine.
  • Cogito ergo sum (Big Bus 1)
    @Big Bus

Before we can understand Absolute morality from a higher source we first must understand the self. The self is the first absolute and the only one we can prove. I can not prove that any God exists, I can however prove that I exist. That is a foundation of a personal morality. It also allows the libertarian to be pro abortion without falling into your relativism conundrum. Since the unborn child has not yet developed the ability to think it has not developed a self.

This principle can then be applied to other thinking beings and they to then can have rights assigned on their personage. That is why most libertarians believe that your rights end where their flesh begins and vice-versa.

So the first absolute is that we know we exist. We then extrapolate that others exist, but this cannot be proven. From there we theorize that there is a higher being that divines absolute truth on his people, this we cannot prove.
  • Liberal Hater
Bingo! That is basically what I was saying the other day. We have not really had that discussion nor the chance to vote on it. Have that vote and let that decide the question from here on so we can get on to other issues.
  • Carlin isn't what he's cracked up to be
Carlin was clearly an idiot on this issue. Conservatives want to forget people after the 9 months are up? Give me a break. Anyone that supports life supports the protection of that life regardless of age. He was a moron for saying that, because we believe that life is precious and should be protected regardless. As a conservative, I would fight for the protection of life whether they were unborn or 45 years old. Stop counting on the Hollywood Left and famous people for your rhetoric. You're starting to sound like Jane Fonda.
  • Republican Letter
The Republicans are as unwilling to relinquish power as the Democrats. I will believe they are changing when they support the Fair Tax, term limits, and stop all this pandering vote buying.
  • changing?
reaching out to the voter? what a crock..they are all nothing but welfare recipients just like ol prez bo.They picked a fine time to start giving a crap..Like anybodys gonna believe a thing they say now.
  • @ Big Bus
I believe Carlin said it best,

" ... these conservatives are really something, aren't they? They're all in favor of the unborn. They will do anything for the unborn. But once you're born, you're on your own. Pro-life conservatives are obsessed with the fetus from conception to nine months. After that, they don't want to know about you. They don't want to hear from you. No nothing. No neonatal care, no day care, no head start, no school lunch, no food stamps, no welfare, no nothing. If you're preborn, you're fine; if you're preschool, you're fk-d ...
... Now, is a fetus a human being? This seems to be the central question. Well, if a fetus is a human being, how come the census doesn't count them? If a fetus is a human being, how come when there's a miscarriage they don't have a funeral? If a fetus is a human being, how come people say 'we have two children and one on the way' instead of saying 'we have three children?' People say life begins at conception, I say life began about a billion years ago and it's a continuous process. Continuous, just keeps rolling along. Rolling, rolling, rolling along ...

... Just looking for a little consistency here in these anti-abortion arguments. See the really hardcore people will tell you life begins at fertilization. Fertilization, when the sperm fertilizes the egg ... But even after the egg is fertilized, it's still six or seven days before it reaches the uterus and pregnancy begins, and not every egg makes it that far. Eighty percent of a woman's fertilized eggs are rinsed and flushed out of her body once a month during those delightful few days she has. They wind up on sanitary napkins, and yet they are fertilized eggs. So basically what these anti-abortion people are telling us is that any woman who's had more than more than one period is a serial killer! Consistency. Consistency ..."
  • Big Bus
Big Bus, you make an excellent point. I have always stood by the one fundamental fact regarding abortion. The reason it's always been such a stalemate issue is because the question "Where does life begin?" has never truly been answered. It comes down to a personal belief system, per individual. I believe that any politician, whether a Congressman or the President, should stand by the choice to let the people decide this issue and not do it for them.

I would, whole heartedly, support a referendum vote by all registered voters to decide this age old question. The ballot would be simple: "Where does life begin?" There should be three possible answers: A. Birth, B. Conception, C. Third Trimester. A majority vote would then be used to amend the Constitution so that this question will never be argued again without the rule of law prevailing.

My biggest problem with this is the fact that the U.S. Supreme Court allows a woman the right to choose whether or not she aborts a child from her womb, but they wouldn't hesitate in supporting that Scott Peterson should be charged with double homocide for the murder of his pregnant wife. Is this not the biggest double standard we have over unborn life?? There must be a precedence and it has to be defined as where life begins and where it ends, because the rule of law can't prevail without it. I would support any of the three choices in a referendum vote, no matter which direction the people decide.
  • The Issues
Spare me the cry of these pseudo-Conservatives and moderates who say that we need to give up certain issues and compromise. BS! What have the libs given up? Instead, they have gone further to the left, and this country doesn't identify itself as liberal. We are a center right country. That said, if the libs can win by even going further away from the mainstream, why the hell should the conservatives compromise.

This last election should've made it clear. We had the most liberal of the GOP candidates be the nominee. How did that work out?

Was this last election about the issues? Hell no! Was it about experience? Hell no! Was it about prior accomplishments? Hell no! Was it about a candidates' past associations? Hell no!

It was about the idiots who wanted to be part of a "historical" feel good movement. Throw in the day-in day-out Bush Derangement Syndrome over 8 years, an absolutely cheering media, and then the financial panic in September.

When you add it all up, OBozo got a whopping 7 million more votes than the "unpopular" Bush in 2004 and 10 million more than Kerry. He got big support from 2 groups who don't normally vote, and probably won't vote in the same numbers again - the minorities and the youth.
  • Abortion and libertarians
I'm truly amazed that so many calling themselves "libertarian" don't think the abortion issue is a huge deal and should be dealt with. I am a Christian, yet can still make a perfectly legitimate NON-CHRISTIAN argument (yet still theistic, since, you know, we believe our RIGHTS come from God) against abortion.

I guess everyone has a right to their LIFE except that darn baby? This is unbelievable to me. I know a lot of libertarians who do oppose abortion, but this is just disturbing what I read from so man libertarians.

And someone wrote "doesn't anyone realize that morality changes"? Really? Is that an absolute? Is that your morality speaking right there? These are self-refuting arguments. Our very principles of "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" are considered to be "absolutes". Our laws against MURDER are ABSOLUTE. Our laws against theft are ABSOLUTES and are based on morals. Give me a break on this relativism stuff, it is self-refuting.

Someone down the page wrote "morality comes from within"? Really? Then how in the hell do you take a stand on ANYTHING? I don't know how many people tell me this stuff. Or the people who say morality is some kind of "societal decision", based on the majority vote. Hmm...let's see how well that's gone over in history, and what WE have to say about murderous, liberty-taking regimes. Upon WHAT do we judge Hitler? Upon WHAT do we judge Saddam?

Everyone on here loves LIBERTY, and believes we have some kind of "right" to it. Well, that's a MORAL ISSUE. You cannot in one breath say morality is subjective and then make an ABSOLUTE statement. It is intellectually dishonest.

I love most of what Neal says, and what libertarians stand for. But true libertarians should protect the LIVES of the most innocent and helpless among us. To act as though someone has some personal "right" to destroy ANOTHER LIFE is contra to our very beliefs.

Now, you may not have those beliefs about God and absolute rights, but then you can't very well support the constitution, can ya? Picking and choosing is a funny funny thing, and just shows peoples' inconsistencies.

It's like the atheists who say "I can be an atheist and still be moral". FINE! GREAT for you! I'm glad you won't murder me or take my stuff. You have ZERO justification for those morals. NONE. I could just as easily have my OWN morals, and those may include killing you and taking your stuff. Don't try and give me some "well I have a right to my property". That would then be an absolute, and would refute your own stance.

Can you tell I'm irked? I'm just so utterly disgusted that abortion is even DISCUSSED in this country in a legitimate way. It is the LOWEST of the low, and those children should have equal protection. Their lives are FIRST God's, and second their OWN.

  • The GOP could do a lot of things, I just don't think they will.
I'm not sure they understand, much less are able to explain, promote, and defend conservative principles, or wage the political warfare against the dp it will take to defeat them. The dp will merrily nail the lid on the GOP coffin by any means neccessary.

It may be impossible anyway, with the goverment education system putting out a new crop of mostly dependant drones every year.
  • De'
I have a question. Just who are the "Four" Fathers you're speaking of? Which "four" are you referring to?
  • Fair Tax & Republicans
Republicans could win with the Fair Tax, but unfortunately many of the Republican leaders are not capable of understanding the Fair Tax. Unless you have worked in a job or run a business where you actually have to deal with the impact of our current tax system you probably won't understand why the Fair Tax is needed. I don't think many Republican leaders and very few Democrat leaders fit that requirement. The only way to get them to go along with the Fair Tax is when there is a massive ground-swell of opinion from the people themselves. We need to keep working on educating the common man.
  • before you critique
I know the system works on electoral votes ...

PrezBO won a majority of the votes in a majority of the states and thus won a majority of the electoral votes ...

He also won the popular vote - which is meaningless ...
  • Lee
Hey Lee, well said. Total agreement. That is exactly the same stuff that makes Republicans mad (especially my Rep father). But they just don't want to hear, because of values to religion. But they forgot why our Four Fathers left. Religion was used to control the people & messed with their minds. And the Constitution kept God in Mind, but also kept the 'INDIVIDUAL' as a Priority.

For example - close to home - my parents fought every single day of my whole entire life (NO LIES TRULY) They fought for 39 misably long years(morning day and night[2am fights]), horrible years... Do you want to know why they stayed together in such everyday battles - religion. Religion is to be upheld, but not used as a reason to make laws against the individual person. Now that they have learned from my siblings and I about Peace and Freedom, now they are divorced. And they are both doing well on their own. No more hate, no more mean words, just peace for they know it is no longer a fight - they each are their ownselves & owe nothing unless they want to. Peace is only brought by understanding a clear way... and could be possible for the party at loss too.

Thus the Constitution was written... Our Four Fathers loved God, but they understood what it should be held as.. not as Republicans want to hold it as in their views of GOD on others.

Staying Libertarian in my votes - until they get back to the Constitution Mentality.
  • Thanks PJ
It is clear, you see it at work and just about everywhere, presentation style matters. You can be a genius, but if you are boring or stuttering, people don't care. However, if you have good confident presentation skills, people are drawn.

What scares me is the supposed future of the party. Names like Jindal and Cantor are mentioned. Jindal's speech after the State of the Union was a disaster. Jindal is a smart man with solid conservative credentials, but the guy came across as a creepy Indian version of Mr. Rogers. No matter what he says, the left will destroy this guy just like Palin if he attempts to run on the national stage. Eric Cantor was interviewed by Hannity after the speech too, and he was awful. He couldn't even get himself to say that the stimulus budget was a disaster. Why can't these guys speak?
  • Republican Possibilities
I'm Libertarian, but I was raised to be a Republican.

I truly believe there are a few things that will need to change within the Republican party in order for me to even think of going back.

First - No offense.. Christians need to stop making silly laws that trigger ideas of Big Government... You can do this, but you can't do that. I am spiritual, and love 'God Loving' people of all religions. But the Christian Republicans, I fear are as nuts as the Democrats are about equal distribution.

Second - Fair Tax - would easily make me vote Republican. For I feel if there is Equal Rights, Equal Opportunity, then there should be room for Equal Taxes.

Third - Get Rid of Career Politicians - this has ruined the party too. Sorry, but these Republicans get warped in the brains for sitting in the chair too long.

Fourth - Bush - Both of them - worked too hard to prolong recession on several occasions. Both Bush(s) are guilty of this too. HWBush did it in 1991, as Clinton did in 1998, And Bush Jr did in 2001, 2005, & 2007/08. The proof is in financial stats - Look them up. Stop holding us back from a quicker recovery - who cares about votes when you have your conscience/American people needs to be met.

And my list could go on.. but the main points have been distributed to you.
  • LiberalHater's counter...
Thanks for the quick synopsis on the process and I consider myself "enlightened" now.

So, therefore I yield my remark.

    Thanks LH
  • FairTax
I think that whichever party picks up and runs with the FairTax and makes it become law, it will become the most dominant party when it does what it says it will do. Which ever president signs the FairTax into law will be practically guaranteed a 2nd term when the people see just how much the economy is stimulated.
  • @ Lone Gunman
I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure Obama won because he received the most votes! It doesn't matter where the voters live or originate from - they are voters like everyone else.

What the republican doesn't understand is that its divide and conquer strategy is no longer effective. You've effectively alienated so many people they've defected to the democrats.

Most of America is moderate, and your (the repubs) hard-line litmus test for candidates is further driving people away ... (ex - choosing Palin over Ridge because Ridge is pro-choice and some were afraid to ruffle feathers in the base - by choosing the base, you end up with moderate republicans saying - hey, i don't want my country going THAT far to the right. )

By calling out repubs as RINO's, you no longer have moderate republicans - they end up switching parties, voting against party lines (and then their own party attempts to run someone against them in the next primary) or they "fall in line" - and as a party of individual freedom, the last thing you should be advocating is "falling in line".
  • Big Africa
You just hit it right on the head Big Africa about Campaign for Liberty!! That grass roots organization has grown by the hundreds of thousands and is continually growing every day. As a matter of fact, they have been a huge reason that HR1207 "The Federal Reserve Transparency Act" is now over 100 co-sponsors and is currently in committee with Slobbering Barney.
  • It's not power they're after....
It's control. Either party. This time the D's have figured it out for the moment, the R's are scrambling to become Democrat lite or whatever it takes to get the control back.

If it were truly power they were after, someone would read the FairTax books and realize that this is truly the road to being the party that brought prosperity to the U.S.A. once again, and that translates into being voted into the majority (in other words, power) in order to enact the FairTax legislation.

BUT this has nothing to do with power, in that with that power comes no control to ensure that the dumb masses continue to vote for them. The current rat-maze of tax laws and the ability to write a group of people directly into exempt status, or write a group of people into the non-taxpayer portion of the population, is a sure-fire way of getting a bloc of votes for reelection.

The political group with the integrity to dump the IRS and all its associated Buffalo Splats will truly have exercised power in the name of and on behalf of the citizens, and removed the control of the US Government back to the individual citizenry instead of consolidation of that power in the hands of a few of the 535 apparent control freaks in D.C.

Good luck on getting the control freaks-in-charge (Reid, Pelosi, and Obama) to even let the FairTax be mentioned in that city.
  • nope
Nope Red, I'm a fiscal conservative and a social liberal. Didn't like Bush at any point, didn't vote for him, he was never a fiscal conservative, it's funny that republicans act like it was a huge surprise. Love John McCain for the person that he is, don't agree with him on everything though, would love it if he was the president right now. The bottom line is, you guys can run around scream all you want - unless you let people of "milder" views into the party, you will never ever win an election, and your voice will mean absolutely nothing, just as it is now with congress infested with dems. It's about picking your battles and those of you who completely refuse to do so are the reason why we have the most liberal freaks running this country today.
  • Big G's comment on Ron Paul
First of all, I have to be fair to this argument. I used to stand in the same position you did about Ron Paul taking pork projects home. That was until it was thoroughly explained WHY he took the pork projects he did. Neal didn't even understand, because he was uninformed. So, I'll give you a quick education right here, right now:

When a bill is created, they pull a dollar amount out of thin air (just like Nancy Pelosi said they do). Once that number is established, then the Congressmen ask for some of that money to go to their district for certain projects. When Ron Paul asks for $2 Million to go to his district, it's DEDUCTED from the original number, NOT ADDED ON. That's the big misconception people lose out on (I admit I did). Whatever money is left over and not dedicated to a specific project is left up to the Obama Administration to decide how it's spent.
Ron Paul did that, as he said in his speech on the House Floor, because when you use taxpayer money at the local level, it makes it transparent and the taxpayer gets to see where it's going. When you don't use it and let Obama decide how it's spent (like when they allow bailout companies to spend it on bonuses), we don't get to see where it's going until the damage is already done. I think Ron Paul was absolutely BRILLIANT in trying to allocate that money to the local level instead of letting Obama use it at his discretion. I hope that helps. If not, read it in his own words here: http://www.lewrockwell.com/paul/paul453.html
  • ChristyABC
"Richtfan - Get over yourself! Dictating personal moral decisions to everyone is not freedom.

The hard right has to finally understand this one basic principle: When you continuously try to legally dictate personal life decisions while spouting about how they are for Individual Rights and the Constitution out of the other side of their mouths,
they lose all hope of credibiity. Ditch the crazies...understand morality comes from within each person..and win!"
that's right Christy! I agree, but you don't realize that most likely red leader feels the same way about social issues. The "old school" republicans all think it's okay to be outrage over the government trying to run the economy, but it's okay for the government to tell you how to live your life. Smart.......?
  • Just to let everyone know....
I am a minority(black...can't you tell by the name?) and I voted for Ron Paul. As far as I've seen there's no mention of race in the constitution. If the GOP can stick strictly to the constitution,(which would mean bringing all troops home from around the world since the consttution does not designate America as world police, and giving up this moral superiority mentality) then that is appealing to me. The constitution treats me as an individual rather than a faceless number in a group. I like the approach of a politician that will simply stick to the constitution and forget all the other garbage.

has anyone checked out the campaign for liberty site?
  • Wake up.
Yes. You are dreaming. The FairTax is not the answer to the Republican nightmare. The Republicans fell out of favor because of their mind-numbing spending, not because they failed to cut taxes. The FairTax will draw some people to the party. But it won't be enough to get them the majority because most of the FairTax supporters are economic conservatives in the first place. Embracing the FairTax would be like singing to the choir.
  • Hey Eve....
Wake up! You're a Mccain voter aren't you? If you are then I must by deductive logic ask what you have against traditional conservatism, and having a president that respects the constitution and the concept of the rule of law? No ma'am....it is yourself and your leftist neo-con mystic ilk that will CONTINUE to drive the GOP to lose and become a small regional party rather than a national one if you do not drop the leftist paternalist, Bush/Mccain big government nonsense.Bush was a catastrophe for tradtional conservatism...deal with it, time to face the music. Its you and your type that have fallen for the govt trying to expand and capitalize on crises mode and drive this nation towards soft fascism and bankruptcy. Pick up a Ron Paul book sometime, and embrace a little common sense conservatism maybe. No ma'am it is you that will never win.Lets go ahead and wake it up a little so you can realize that. I advocate the small govt mentality of people like Jefferson and Coolidge it is you who are working AGAINST that.
  • Fair Tax Fairy Tale!
I’ll tell you what the main problem is with Republicrats. Most cities are inhabited primarily by leaches that vote! That sir is what’s wrong with government period. Once 50% of voters realize (and they already have) that they can vote themselves money from the US Treasury (other tax payers) via politicians that will transfer that wealth, then that is what will continue to buy their votes. I saw some statistics not long ago that showed that NObama won all the highly populated urban areas and that is what won that election for him.

And, having said all that, your “Fair Tax” has absolutely NOTING to do with how these leaches will vote! It’s a dream Bootz and it will NOT come true! Deal with it!
  • Club-a--Liberal
First, I absolutely love that name, Club-a-Liberal. Wish I'd thought of that.

Second, I was going to send a message attempting to say exactly what he has already put in fairly direct wording.

    So, what Club-a-Liberal said!!!!

    PJ
  • Republican makeover
Republican's in elected positions must realize it is their hypocricy that lead to their defeat. They are no different than Democrats, spend, spend, and spend some more. All of which was done without cutting a single dollar from the already overbloated budget. Until they get back to a true belief that smaller government is better government they will continue to get the shit kicked out of them. I say replace EVERY damn one of them and let's see how quickly they get the message.
  • not that it's going to do any good, but I tried...
I sent a letter to the Republican party 2 days ago, mentioning something to that effect. Made it clear that I was a Libertarian, and if they didn't get their poop in a group and broaden their base some, that they were going to get eaten for lunch during the next presidential race. Told them to lighten up some on abortion, religion, and gay rights (not that I really give a crap about gay rights, but the Republican's stuffy stance on it screws with a lot of people's brains) Put forth a moderate with a sparkling personality (is there such a thing in the Republican party? They all seem kinda staid, tacturn, and boring to me).

I'm sick and tired of being given a choice between an ultra-liberal and an ultra-conservative for president. I'm tired of voting for one party I don't like, just to prevent the candidate from the party I loathe and despise from getting voted in. I want to vote Libertarian, or at least some reasonable semblance thereof. I'd like to vote for somebody I actually think will do a good job, instead of the lesser of 2 evils.

If the Republicans do not put forth a moderate, the vote will be split yet again, and we'll be stuck with that insufferable twit PrezBO for another 4 years.

And no, I'm not deluding myself...I'm fairly certain that my letter will fall on deaf ears, as it were. But, at least I tried.
  • Ron Paul???
Did you see the Pork he brought home??? Come on!
  • Appealing to the masses
Getting the FairTax word out is very easy. All BO had to say to get the peoples attention was to say "95% will get a tax cut...". Then when asked how he would do it he'd go on a long winded diatribe about blah blah blah and then net net BA-BLAM... TAX CUT!!"

Simply the NEW Party would say "Everyone would get 100% of their paycheck..." That would raise some brows which would require a cynical "How would you do that? (in a condescending tone)... Simple, taxes would be collected when you buy something.

Break it down so that even a 5th grader or even Copy or Hugo can understand.
  • re: Where's George
You have to keep in mind that, for the most part, the folks who would report on what Bush is up to these days don't much like him. Something tells me that if he were to save the President from drowning the headlines would read, "George Bush Involved in President's Brush With Death."
  • McCain
John McCain as a "force" to rebrand the Republican party is the wrong move. His own Dem-lite brand failed at the polls, so why would we continue down that same path? We need to show a true alternative to the left's statist policies.
  • First thing first
The first thing the Republican Party needs to do is understand that the average voter out there is an absolute mouthbreathing uninformed moron. This is where I give the Democrats credit - they get this and are able to communicate/manipulate them with simplistic slogans. That said, we have to find a good communicator (unfortunately in this day and age style matters) who can spell out and communicate these issues with some charisma. Why is talk radio so popular? Hannity, Levin, Rush, Boortz, Beck etc can communicate issues very well with charisma and passion. I listen to GOP congressmen go on TV and they are horrible. The average voter doesn't understand them. They have to learn to spoonfeed the issues. Give everyday examples that people will relate to, tell the people in ways they will understand what the libtard position will mean to them.

I watched the whole campaign and debates last year, and I am pounding my fist on the table screaming at McCain and others, "Why don't you say this, why don't you say that." I felt like I could have gone off the cuff, with no prep, and been able to communicate the positions better than these guys.

Just listen to when voters are questioned. Hannity does Man on the Street. These people don't have a clue. They say they don't like high taxes, they say that we should have a strong defense, they don't want gov't in their lives, then when they are asked who they voted for, they say Obama! We have created a big problem with the parasites in this country, and the entitlement mentality, and the mindset of looking to govt for your daily needs. However, inherently, the majority of the people in this country are right of center. They just are not informed on politics, these are the people that need to get their heads out of their a$$es and wake up. You have the 20% drones out there, the moveon.org dolts, that are gone and lost and hopeless. Forget about them.
  • God I hope your not dreaming Neal.
The Fairtax would definitely put the Republicans ahead and anything that gets the word out there for the Fairtax would be great. That's why I love, and voted for :), Mike Huckabee.... Like I said at the Tea Party FAIRTAX! FAIRTAX! FAIRTAX! Everybody!!! FARITAX!!!!
  • RON PAUL RON PAUL RON PAUL
    Anyone listening yet?

If Ron Paul would have run for the GOP, he would have smoked Obama. Yet, Neal and his moronic Faux News friends insisted on bashing the guy and throwing their support to McCain/Palin. How'd that work out?

Join the Campaign for Liberty now (www.campaignforliberty.com) and take this country back.
  • Pandering for Power
The problem with both major parties is that most of the politicians that they represent have little or no core beliefs. Most of them will say or do anything to gain power and keep it. One only has to look at all the Republican pork in the last big spending package crammed down our throats.
Limited government, personal freedom, low taxes, and personal responsibility is not a permanent governing philosophy of the GOP. Anyone remember what happened to the promises of the Contract with America?
    Support the Libertarian Party.
  • @Richtfan
Your thinking is why a 3rd Party is needed. Many voters that supported the Republicans with all their values, only to realize the they were conned by Republicans that grew government more than the previous Clinton administration, threw away a surplus, were caught up in scandal after scandal while being hypocritical (Foley interns, Gingrich affair)has made many realize they don't practice what they preach.

Let's leave religious values to the churches and let's honor our Constitution as our founding fathers suggested. Let's just get back to the basics.

I think a 3rd party is what the Republicans need to get their act together. Competition is supposed to be god for business and schools, why not politics? The two-party monopoly is tiresome and unproductive.
  • Cynical
I trust no politicians now. Bush disappointed me like no other. But I see now he was a sympton of the current state of the Republican party.
As bad as Obama is, we are very much set up for a Hitleresque leader coming in on the Republican ticket to be the next president.
Enjoy the ride, people. I am reading every book I can on how oppressed people survive so I know how to live in the near future.
  • Richtfan
As long as one must deny a woman domain over her own uterus, insist that gays remain second class citizen, and insist that a fundamentalist interpretation of Judeo-Christian scriptures is the moral underpinning of the nation in order to be a conservative, I'll be voting Libertarian.

I do support the FairTax. In fact, I'm a contributing member. I'm also a contributing member of Citizens Against Government Waste, which recently published a list of items that if removed from the federal budget would reduce federal spending by $2 trillion. And of course, I am a contributing member of the Libertarian Party.

I also support an end to the war on drugs and other unenforceable laws against victimless crimes. I don't care if gay couples marry; marriage is simply a contract between consenting adults.

I do favor limiting the role of government in all facets of our lives, reducing government spending, and reducing taxes. I favor having a strong national defense, but I don't favor defending Germany, Korea, or Japan against former cold-war foes. I believe we have an inherent right to self defense, which mean gun ownership. I believe in protecting our sovereignty, which means tighter border control and deportation of illegal aliens.

So, we probably agree on 80 percent of the issues, but you've clearly stated that I do not meet the criteria for a real conservative. So, you go ahead and insist that the GOP keep its social conservative agenda, and I will continue to vote Libertarian.
  • One Shot
There is a problem for a politician embracing the Fair Tax. If the party can even explain the system to the government educated wealth envy crowd and ride it into power, they will then not have a way to buy votes and stay in power.
  • Are the Republican's getting it?
Why is it so easy for a regular American like me to see how easy it would be to attract the "middle of the road vote" and the "young/new vote" to the republican ticket by just adopting the platform of: Passing the FairTax, Strong Defense, Restoring Freedom, Push Free Enterprise, and Smaller government! What is wrong with putting America first! All of these things will impact the quality of American lives. So I beg the GOP, drop the abortion and marriage crap!
  • Hugo's ghost
i don't understand why the leftist think that the fair tax is a bad idea.

and i would that the prebate, when under a democratic administation, would be enough to get the poor off their knees, and on their feet.

and i'm saying anything bad about them being on their knees. zapata said, "It is better to die on your feet than to live on your knees. "
  • fixing the party
Fixing the republican party is simple. They need to adopt just a few simple principals. Minimize government spending (and actually do it!), fair fax/flat tax and immigration reform. That will bring some us of back who no longer support them.
  • Republicans
Hmm, let's see - a group of people that are getting more liberal on social issues while staying more conservative on economic and governmental issues. Starting to sound like Libertarians to me - which is just fine.
  • Also...
Many seem to suggest that kicking the religious folks out of the GOP would improve their electoral prospects. How so? That's a lot of votes. How is the GOP going to replace them? With who?

The huge contigency of homosexual voters who also support low taxes? Abortion enthusiast who also oppose bailouts? Pot smokers who also happen to oppose socialized medicine?

Where are these replacement votes going to come from? Sorry, but if the GOP drops religious voters, they will never win another national election again.

I'm not religious myself, and I would love to see a political party that is not particularly religious, and is dedicated to small government and low taxes. Oh wait, we have that. It's called the Libertarian party, and they draw next to nothing in national elections.
  • Libertarians
My thoughts are www.lp.org. Quit the quibbiling and take action.
  • NCNA
This NCNA is BS. We dont need 14 issues dealing with healthcare and education. We need 3 principles, less govt, traditional morals, strong national security. Everything should flow from that. First step is to get these McCain esque maverick, populist, power hungry career polticians out of the leadership of the party.
  • illegal immigration
I would push like a mother in labor to close our southern border. Americans do not want illegals in this country, period. The MSM is full of shiite in trying to portray American acceptance of this invasion.
  • The press is in the tank...why WOULD they be tracking Bush?
"Yeah.. but not even a picture of him riding a horse or something? After all, he's a former President. Not even a picture of him attending a baseball game? Perhaps he see's the damage he's caused now that he's back as a "private citizen"."

That kind of requires the media actually go and try to shoot some footage. Right now, the media is all gaga over PrezBo. THAT is what happens when the press is in the tank.

Regarding this panel, dump McCcain. Include him and I KNOW you aren't talking about conservative principle.

And your thing about "morals are not universal"...well, I'm waiting to hear you state how "thou shall not murder" is NOT universal. See http://www.godandscience.org/apologetics/notkill.html for more details.
  • Fair Tax
Neal, I still can't understand why the Democrats aren't the ones behind the FairTax proposal. It fits their proclaimed objectives better than any of the other bills they pass trying to tweek the tax codes.
  • re: FairTax Fantasy
Thanks Chris for pointing out Hugh Hewitt's book.

I've always thought his columns were a little on the boring side & so only glance at them rather than avidly reading them.

But it's sad to see him write an anti-FairTax book. And very distressing that I can't find any of his old columns even discussing the book.

I'm going to look for the book in the local library. I'm curious if he has any original ideas here or is simply regurgitating the same arguments that have been discredited over and over all ready.
  • Hugo and Stan are right!!
Forget the Fairtax. I say we continue taxing everyone the way it is. It's been completely succesful so far and just because you don't like it doesn't mean it isn't right!! As a matter of fact, just like Hugo and Stan, I believe we should raise the taxes on everyone because they aren't paying enough to begin with. Think of how awesome these programs would be if we helped fund them more. The government does it better than private industry!!
  • I'm not sure I follow...
Illegal immigration, same-sex marriage, and abortion handcuff Republicans?

I'm not sure about this. The majority opposes same-sex marriage, although that may be changing among younger voters. But really, who besides homosexuals votes primarily on this issue? And, I believe the official position of the Democrat party is also opposition to same-sex marriage. (I'm mildly supportive, by the way, to the extent that I care, which isn't much.)

Abortion is probably a wash. However, most people I know who support abortion rights tend to support the majority of the liberal agenda. However, I've known many people who would probably vote Democrat, but don't because they oppose abortion. So, I don't think the GOP can gain anything from dropping opposition to abortion.

And finally, illegal immigration. The GOP would benefit from increased opposition to illegal immigration (which might hurt them with hispanic voters, but really who cares? Their current lax attitude on illegal immigration hasn't helped them). But as it stands on illegal immigration, their platform is essentially no different from the Democrat's. So, I don't see how that "handcuffs" them.

Granted, I don't think the GOP should focus on these issues if they intend to reinvent themselves, but I don't think they "handcuff" them either. They should obviously focus on fiscal restraint, low taxes, smaller federal government, and increased freedom, but in this day and age, I think those issues might "handcuff" them as much as those mentioned above, since the population seems to prefer less freedom and being treated like wards of the state.
  • @richtfan and @red leader
    Red leader - Right on!

Richtfan - Get over yourself! Dictating personal moral decisions to everyone is not freedom.

The hard right has to finally understand this one basic principle: When you continuously try to legally dictate personal life decisions while spouting about how they are for Individual Rights and the Constitution out of the other side of their mouths, they lose all hope of credibiity. Ditch the crazies...understand morality comes from within each person..and win!
  • Brag about your charities
Yes "you" would Hugo. Are you calling him a liar?

One major easy to understand point about the FairTax that the liberals really should like is the Prebate. The tax amount on the poverty limit will be sent to every citizen. So that no one pays tax at all on this amount. And they would get it UPFRONT!!! The Dems don't want the poor folks to pay taxes and with this plan they wouldn't. Everybody benefits.
  • Republican Party
I have always been a member of the Republican Party, although I have not always voted a total party ticket because occasionaly the other member was a better choice on a local level.
I do think putting the fair tax issue out as part of the issues to reignite the party is a good idea, especially right now when Americans are seeing the true "Tax Reform" ie. stimulus packages. I do believe the more people who see what is taxed, who is taxed, and how we "everybody who buy's anything in the US!" and I do mean everybody, are going to be taxed. Because we would not be taxed on our income but by what we buy. What could be more simple, fair and would bring in more money to the Government than the IRS can ever bring in. When President Obama was elected I decided that, Ok I hope he will do right by the Nation, I wanted to give him a fair chance, I really had hope. Well if the Republicans blow this chance, .....
Thanks Neal, Herman, Sean, Clark and Jamie for Keeping us in the Know
  • The Savior!
The FairTax is going to save us all! Praise be unto the FairTax!

The FairTax bill has NEVER been allowed out of committee in Congress-not when the Republicans were in charge, not when the Democrats were in charge. And it never will be. The only person gaining from FairTax mania is Neal Boortz. And before the myrmidons start screaming "He gave all the profits from his book to charity!!!"- ask yourself this simple question: Why is it that the man who loves to brag about himself, his money and his toys never manages to mention which charities he gave all that money to? If I was supporting a charitable cause and I had the big microphone, I would be drumming up support at least once a month, if not once a week. Think about it.
  • richtfan @ 09:35:23 AM
"you cannot be conservative and pick and choose".

Let me re-phrase: you must swallow the whole program or you're not welcome here.

That makes for a very small tent and continued erosion of republican numbers in the 75% of the country that does not center its life around Jesus.
  • GOP & the FairTax
I love the FairTax, BUT (big one) the FairTax is so easily demagogued that they'll need to be able to defend it as well as support it.

That means they have to know the plan and be able to explain it to everyone. Or else it'll just be another anchor the democrats will use to drown them.
  • Fair Tax and the GOP
The one, best chance the GOP has is the Fair Tax issue. It is the only "new" idea that will work short term. Their core planks will come back after voters get their fill of the Democrats
  • REDLEADER
you and people like you are the reason why republicans can't win elections. this country is center-right, if you rely on hard core right-wingers to win elections - you'll never win. FACE THE MUSIC!
  • Where's George
Yeah.. but not even a picture of him riding a horse or something? After all, he's a former President. Not even a picture of him attending a baseball game? Perhaps he see's the damage he's caused now that he's back as a "private citizen".
  • social conservative
the reality is - social conservatives want the government to dictate to people what's moral and what isn't - there are some men who think it's immoral for a woman to voice her opinion, for example. that is NOT what the republican party was build on, the original idea of the party was both personal and economic freedom from the government.

i'm taking abortion out of it - it's no longer political issue, it's personal, and Hispanic and African-American communities oppose abortion yet they overwhelmingly vote democrat (same for gay marriage). so social issues are out as they should be. the new generations are coming up and they're socially liberal, the republican party will die if people keep holding on to the idea of government dictating morality...

i like this group, but I'm not sure about Sarah Palin anymore. I liked her fine but now the more decisions she's making, the more I doubt her. SHe won't be our next presidential candidate.
  • By Brother
Reaching out to minorities is difficult for a Republican party that would adopt the ideals of individual liberty over collectivism. Sorry to say, most minorities vote collectivist. By definition, minority outreach means big government, higher taxes, and less freedom.

Also, I agree with the other poster that said Bush is now a private citizen, keeping his mouth shut as has been the tradition upheld by past presidents until Carter and Clinton.
  • non thinkers
The country laughs at Republicans because of Hannity and Dobson. If those two men quit the republican party then we wouldn't be thought of as simple minded/ single issue/ non-thinkers.

Talking points = unwillingness to think. Let's be reasonable.
  • you're wrong
about some of what you're saying Neal. Of course, you have the right to your opinion.

Republicans are not going to abandon their core social issues. I do not believe that the party is split into factions. The conservative movement is based on a specific set of principles, none of which can or should be compromised.

    free and fair trade
the sanctity of unborn human life
term limits for federally elected officials
    strict constructionist federal judiciary
    tax cuts for all people
simplification of the tax code and/or elimination of the income tax
    state's rights
    2nd amendment amplification and clarification
promotion of the small business as the key means to economic growth
individual liberty and freedom rather than groupism and victimhood
marriage existing solely between and man and a woman
using all of our domestic energy sources to become independent of other countries
    anti terrorism
    health care choice
    educational choice
    anti-union stance
belief in the irrefutable basis for our society that we were endowed by our creator (God almighty) with certain rights. This forces us to believe that there is something above ourselves and our vaporous lives. Judeo-Christian history has shaped the formation of this country. it is undeniable.

all of these principles define conservatism in one way or the other. you cannot be conservative and pick and choose. in other words, those who bash social conservatives because they are against killing innocent babies aren't really conservatives at all. you can't really believe in limited government if you're not for term limits. there are many other examples that I could give.

The bottom line is that when conservatives act like moderates or liberals, they lose in a big way. When they campaign and then govern as conservatives, they win big.
  • Fairtax is stalled
Good news is Neal promotes it. Bad news is Neal promotes it. It gets no support from the other conservative radio hosts because it would cut into their ratings and agenda. Hugh Hewitt actually has a book out called the "Fairtax Fantasy". Conservatives seem to be their own worst enemy in many ways and specifically to the Fairtax.
  • Republican party change
I wonder if turning away from social conservatives would really ignite the republican party. Everyone votes their conscience when they go to the polls. If a social conservative has no voice in the republican party, could they be expected to vote for "republican lite"?
  • Where's George?
He's not hiding out. He's being what all ex-Presidents SHOULD be; a private citizen.
Instead of sniping at Obama - like Mr Clinton did at him - he is minding his own business and letting the new guy learn his job without constant second-guessing from the sidelines.
    THAT'S where George Bush is.
  • Fairtax Fantasy
How are we going to push the fairtax when we have conservatives who trash it more than liberals? "Well that 23% tax rate is going to have to be much higher". 23% of GDP, which is around $13 trillion(obviously will be lower some this year), comes out to be $2.9 trillion dollars into the federal gov't. Well obviously that's not enough to run big gov't policies that both parties want to embrace. We're on our way to having gov't consume over 50% of GDP, so obviously the tax rate would have to be doubled. Certainly not a winner with the elctorate.
  • GOP
While I've been a libertarian for years,I've generally voted republican, but they've totally lost me. I used to vote for them because at least they believed in fiscal responsibility, though I've never noticed any concept of actual freedom coming from them because of their seeming need to use the bible to trump the constitution. Now all they have to hang their hat on is religious dogma. Why would I vote for the theological wing of the socialist party? At least with the socialists I get huge government and taxes without the religious agenda, so frankly they're a better bargain. I won't vote for them, but I won't vote republican again either.
  • FairTax
I 100% Agree Neal. The ONLY way the Republican Party can regain power is through the FairTax. But, either most of them are too lazy to educate themselves about it, or care more about themselves than America and her future.
  • it's a start...
...but mccain needs to just go away now. i have a better list of what the party needs to do though, maybe they should call me. it's very simple, every position they take needs to be consistent with individual liberty. too much to list here, check it out at republicanremix.com.
  • Repub Party
Any group that includes McCain won't be any different than they are now. "Getting it" means that they will have to listen to the people that go to Tea Parties, that believe in the rule of law, and that favor principle over political pandering.

Will they get it? Are you kidding? The very fact that they aren't interested in the opinions of some of the evangelical conservative positions mean that they aren't in it for an open dialog. Just more BS with hopes of getting back in control so they can continue as before.

They'll try to become more like Dems and will lose out again. And we'll be scuhrewed.
  • Heard it before
Te republicans have done this before. When they had the chance to take advantage of the contract with america they blew it. Now they have lost power and are going to pander to us once again. I got fooled once , but not again. I will vote republican, but will only vote for non-incumbents and they better endorse the fair tax.
  • Fair Tax
Neal, I am really surprised your station manager hasn't pulled the plug on your constant promotion of the Fair Tax. Most of your shows are now little more than tiresome infomercials on the Fair Tax. Look, its a good idea but it has about as much chance of becoming law as I do of becoming Pope.
You rail constantly about the dumb masses. Has the last election taught you nothing? The dumb masses, products of government schools are incapable of understanding the Fair Tax. You are constantly barraged with the same questions from the public. Most don't want to understand it. The liberals can and will shoot it down with mis-information and the public will believe them.
Please re-think the wisdom of continued efforts to sell this idea. After all, its kind of like trying to teach a pig to sing. It makes you angry and frustrates the hell out of the pig.
  • Red Leader
    you got that right.

i would pull our troop from every where.
and if the needed to go elsewhere, congress would need to declare war, and institute a draft.

because if we had a draft, the people wouldn't go along with these wars that we have going on.
  • Never again
There is no Republican Party anymore. If the Evangelicals and Catholics on the right cannot have someone speak on their behalf, they will do what most conservatives did last November- sit on their hands and not vote.

It amazes me- we never lost an election before for standing on principle. Now Neal and these other pundits are on that "the christian right is the enemy" nonsense. We believe in the precious sanctity of life, but this makes us outcasts?

The only thing I agree with- the Republicans are going to be in the wilderness a very long time. If you don't stand for something, you fall for everything.
  • Republicans
Two things to bring you back ..

    1. Get rid of your anti-abortion attitude.

    2. Sincerely reach out to minorities to join your party.

    3. Stop hating on gays/ lesbians.

On another note.. where is George Bush? Is he in a cave.. pulling a Saadam Hussien manuever? He's in hiding!!!
  • Republicans and Fair Tax
The Fair Tax is wrapped around Republican principles. The ones that don't support it are in politics for self-gain only. If those that do support it would threaten to leave the party and start their own party, you would see smart masses follow.

A threat is all it would take before the rest of the Republicans to get in line.

Hopefully, one Republican politician could gather the rest of their colleagues that support the Fair Tax to agree on taking a stand together against the RINOs. It only takes one.
  • Road trip
I think if it is fully explained simply to the American People they would love it! Business would love it. Illegal aliens would hate it..... unless they are granted amnesty and given Social Security numbers so they can get the prebate checks too.

But you and Linder would have to go on the road!!! Take it to the people.
  • What the Republican party needs to do...
    The Republican party caan win, but the failed leftist neo-con foreign policy of nation building, and policing the planet to the tune of bankruptcy has to go. America is not Rome. Here what the Republicans need;

-Embrace the constitution and states rights.
-Eliminate about 70% of all government programs.
-Pull troops out from the middle east where their presence is aiding terrorist recruitment,
    -Embrace the fair tax uncompromisingly
-Secure the border encourage illegals to go home
-Stop pretending that morals are universal
    -End America's drug war addiction
    -Audit the Federal Reserve
Embrace freedom of choice in education
-Admit that George W. Bush and Amnesty Mccain were a disaster for traditional conservatism.

If the GOP doesn't do the majority of these things, Obama and his henchmen will remain in power. The number of conservatives not will to vote for Mccain/Cheney/Bush types is growing. The neo-con big govt mystics in the GOP must be exiled in order for the party to regain its appeal.
  • Exactly what I said yesterday
This is what I said yesterday. Get the evangelical/catholic views out of the republican party and they will kick butt. Unfortunately Neal, most of the responses were not positive. Of course most of them dont actually know what goes on anyways so it doesnt matter.
