The Reason Foundation is a Libertarian think tank.  This bit from Jon Basil Utley.  Don't read it if you still think Obama hung the moon:

It's only a matter of time before President Barack Obama's vast popularity runs aground on his energy policies. In the name of saving the planet from global warming, he has delayed new oil drilling, an action that will have major political repercussions once the world economy recovers. Instead of using some [of] the stimulus billions to produce more gas and oil, Obama's wild-eyed supporters dream of "renewable" energy derived from corn, wind, sunshine, and even grass.

With the appointment of extremists like climate czar Carol Browner and science adviser John Holdren, Obama has placed his administration's environmental policy in the hands of radicals. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar proposes replacing oil and coal with windmills. Yet Barron's recently reported that America would need to build 500,000 giant offshore windmills and transmission lines to produce Salazar's specified 1,900 gigawatts of electricity. In contrast, oil and gas drilling could provide hundreds of thousands of solid, well-paying blue-collar jobs. . . .

All of these things are happening at a time when natural gas is abundant and cheap. The new technology of horizontal fraccing has made it economically feasible to drill into vast shale deposits in many states, even famously difficult ones like Michigan and New York. Many cars could run on natural gas, much like many buses do already. On a recent trip to Peru, I learned that most taxicabs have been converted to natural gas for a cost of about $1,000 each. New technologies continually revive old oil and gas fields and make new ones economically viable. So it's little more than socialist Malthusianism to argue that the world is running out of cheap energy. Science will always find and harness new sources.

What others are saying

  • Have any of them noticed?
So mining coal is eeevil, right? But what about the mining of all the materials that make up one of those ginormous windmills? Heavy metals, plastics [oil?!] steel which is iron + *carbon* -- and the *energy* to manufacture those giant things; and the energy to move 'em and plant 'em.

What? They just grow there? Planted by unicorns? Like little ACORNs?

    oh. never mind.
  • Wow
This is mindless stupidity, made clear by the scare quotes around the word renewable. Developing a long term energy strategy is one of the most important goals if we want to preserve our economy and society, as well as our planet. And no, it doesn't make you a wild-eyed zealot to think we can get energy that doesn't come from fossil fuels.

Also, I'm not sure how you can talk about building thousands of windmills and transmission lines and then squeal about how the alternative creates thousands of jobs. I guess the windmills build themselves.

And outside of wingnut-land, none of his appointments are radical in any way.

Obama does have it wrong on corn ethanol. And he should be working for more spending on research.
  • Tesla
IF you really want cheap clean energy you go back and look at Tesla's idea of putting large towers that produce electricity and is captured out of the air without the need of plugging anything in.
  • Water Turbines
Whenever you disturb the flow of a river there are always consequences. The Dams we built did damage to the environment because those consequences were not known or understood.

I think that we should take a cautious approach to interferring with water flow, especially since some idiots want to put them in the deep sea ocean currents (you know, the AC system of the earth).
  • More Oil!!!!
The more oil we drill, the faster we use it up. I especially like the part about using our oil to keep prices down. Then, when we run out, we will be totally dependent on foreign sources. No, let's burn THEIR oil as long as they are willing to sell it. Then, when we really need it, we will still have ours.

Of course, my version of conservatism involves frugality and planning for the worst case. That probably makes me a RINO nowadays.
  • Energy
For more electric power; check out Free Flow Power Corp. They make water powered
turbines that can be placed in rivers.
They do not require that dams be built.
The power supply is constant since few
rivers stop flowing, unlike wind power.
The turbines are underwater and out of sight. They can be mounted on poles, attached to barges or mounted on bridge supports. Tree huggers will find something wrong with them, I am sure.
  • standing army???
if you don't learn anything else today learn this.

a standing army follows ORDERS. the house slave is the C in C. he says crap and the room starts to smell bad...don't think so? look at what has happened since the second attack on AMERICA (01/20/09)

    DRIP don't return incumbent politicians
  • natural gas? uncle?? wha da???
how long ago was it that ol' uncle buuba worked fo' AG&L. things may have improved since then.

once again let's do some R&D

    DRIP don't return incumbent politicians
  • sun, wind, atoms
I see another NIMBY has shown up. D.D.

we should not put all of our energy eggs into one basket. they all have a place. when i see a wind farm i think wow that is amazing. someone had an idea and it has come to fruition, boy that medicine is gooood, the mind is truely a terrible thing to waste.

the landscape is not clittered, more meds more meds, cluttered with wind farms, we are using something that has always been there and will never run out. the folks that own the land are paid a fee so they can then, oh crap i have to say it, pay more taxes to keeep the non achievers on the front porch bitchin' about those horrible wind mills.

    solar farms. same crap. NIMBY!!!!!

    nuclear? don't get me started.

so let's not clutter(got it right the first time) the landscape and let's not do any R&D, lets just sit on the porch and bitch about "where is that sob mailman wit my check?"

    DRIP don't return incumbent politicians
  • USSA
For the first time in my life...I am not proud of my country.

We have a President who loves our enemies, hates our allies, despises our values and wants to toss out the economic system that has given us decades of prosperity just because of a cyclical recession...and the idiots with their hands out for their share of the loot are cheering it own. Thank God for a standing army...perhaps they won't let this go on long enough to do permanate damage.
  • Stan
    You show your ignorance well.
  • Natural Gas Cars
I remember when my uncle worked for Atlanta Gas Light and drove a natural gas powered F150. He said it was worthless. It only went about 100 miles on a full tank and there was only one place to fill it back up. If it ran out, you had to either tow it back to the one gas station or send out a tanker truck to fill it up. He also said it was severely underpowered due to the fact that natural gas has much less BTUs than propane or gasoline.

T Boone is fooling everybody that has no working knowledge of chemistry or mechanics.
  • You're stuttering Stan
    And making stupid comments AGAIN!

Libertarians would have stood a chance if we hadn't gone gaga over people who LIE.
  • Radicals?
Obama appoints radicals? Obama is a radical. He has numerous long term associations with radicals. His playbook is "Rules For Radicals". Half this country is convinced he is a great visionary. We are sooooo screwed.
  • How is this credible?
So this guy works for a Libertarian ThinkTank, what does that even mean? I cannot tell you any prominent libertarians that have been elected EVER. This guy just seems like a pessimistic baby that actually thought Bob Barr had a chance

  • Now Isn't that interesting
First people complain that the countryside is littered with phone poles and power poles. Now we want to litter even more of the land scape with wind generators. Libs are buying into T. Boone Pickens. He is a hell of a salesman. Making millions on this by the bucket load. Instead of using a couple of the wind turbines to power an actual electric turbine and produce the power that we need, no lets spend hundreds of millions of dollars building tens of thousands and screw up the land scape. Not to mention the millions you will need for daily maintance. Lets go ahead and build acre upon acre of solar panels that use water to keep them cool that we could be using for crops. No lets not push for better technology. Lets not be thoughtful and realize that in 5-10 years we are going to have to do it all over again.

No, instead people lie, cheat and steal to push global warming. Some people want the furture so bad the believe the cons. All of these things will happen, but it will take time.

    AND IT KEEPS GETTING FUNNIER!
  • Timmy
Ditto here! Alternative sources are great but until they are really ready for public use let's lower our gas and oil prices by drilling at home and keeping it at home. In the late 70's early 80's we closed over 1500 wells here in the US, get them open and start drilling offshore or anywhere else we can find it. The technology has increase to where environmental impact is nil.

Libertarian think tanks are less corrupt thank Republican or Democrat which is probably why John Wayne didn't realize it.
  • Timmy
I agree with you 100%. They keep talking about not being dependent on foreign oil. We don't have to be! We could be producing domestically right now and providing good paying jobs when we really need them. I keep thinking at some point we'll be faced with another emargo like we had in '73. If that happens, we're screwed.
  • Oil
The price of gas is starting to rise once again, hopefully this will bring drilling back on the table. We can't currently run America, or the world for that matter, on Wind, Water, Solar or any of the other fantastic alternative energies so why can't we use whats available until we can? Because the current individuals in power are beholden to crazies that don't care about the future of this country, only about their agenda.
  • This space for rent!
    A Libertarian think tank?

    Now isn't THAT an oxymoron!
