It's been a while since Americans have had a corporation that they could really rail against. It feels like ages since everyone raised their pitchforks over the AIG bonuses. Well, maybe the time has come again, as AIG makes its way back into the news. The original outrage, you may remember, came when AIG announced that it was going to pay $120 million in 2008 bonuses to about 6,000 employees.

You'll be happy to know that this $120 million isn't even close to the amount AIG will actually pay to employees in the form of bonuses for 2008. Try $454 million ... that's quadruple what Americans were outraged over before.

AIG's explanation is that this $454 million is the answer to a different question than what as previously asked ... this new figure "'reflects all types of variable compensation across all of our businesses,' while the $120 million figure he provided earlier reflected only bonuses paid to corporate headquarters executives and high ranking officers at its major businesses around the world."

So if it has been a while since you have let your wealth-envy really get the best of you .... Just remember that all of these evil people working for this evil corporation are going to be getting bonuses!

What others are saying

  • Copy the Democrats
I know how to end the bonuses and stop the outrage.
Change the word "bonus" to the phrase "contractually obligated expenditures".
"$454 million in contractually obligated expenditures"?
    No big deal.
    No more outrage.
    And no lie...
  • Missing Links
If AIG has so many lucrative businesses, then why didn't they/ why don't they try to sell some of these enterprises?
  • Wealth Envy - dig this
My boss's wife is a VP for Wachovia in their Commerical Products division. Her group does VERY well and she brings in millions of dollars for Wachovia every year. She never gets to take all her vacation days but they won't pay her for them. She has accumulated so many vacation days they said they could not let her roll any more forward. She's at 70, they cut it back to 55.

So review time comes. Normally she would get a nice big bonus. "We're sorry, it's just not politically correct this year." So they offer her more vacation time. She points out that is only giving her back what they already took away, how is that an incentive?

All because of some whiners. Wachovia may lose one of their best.
  • AIG Bonuses
    Is AIG hiring?

I could use a bonus check since all of my current money is going to pay for the TARP.

Feels like a rob Peter to pay Paul kind of thing.
  • Not just bonuses
Variable pay doesn't just mean bonuses, it also includes incentives like commissions. I work for a company whose sales force receives ONLY commissions - talk about incentive to produce.

Frankly, I approve of any system that uses commissions, tips, or even bonuses to make a person's pay reflect their actual output.

    Except for mine, of course.
  • rob
i am adept at sarcasm. but i have to judge where the sarcasm comes from. from neal, and the way it was written, i was thinking it was serious.

    of course, i know you're a banker.
  • Good for them...
It was only one division of AIG that caused the mess. The rest of the business is healthy as far as most analysts are concerned. The other employees deserve their pay. No outrage here. My outrage was at the government for bailing them out and then I was more outraged when they tried to strip them of their pay. I'd be pissed if the company I worked for tried pulling that crap on me.

t-shirt doctor, sarcasm is lost on you.
  • no more bailouts
They shouldn't be getting ANY bonuses. The federal government should have let them fail. It's never the government's place to interfere in private enterprise.
  • the pitchforks
i read about this group who were doing what you said. unfortunately, they didn't have any pitchforks around.

they went to the AIG neighborhoods, and let them see how the people were pissed off at them.

who led this group of people? ACORN.

so neal, you're supporting ACORN. hahahaha

its really sad that they where the only ones who were brave enough to go into the belly of the beast.

  • Read Closely
This amount reflects, "reflects all types of variable compensation across all of our businesses," which means that it likely includes commissions to sales reps and MBO type bonuses for employees. These are rank and file people that EARNED the money they are receiving. We should hope that more sales reps are earning big commissions because growing sales is the answer to ending the bailout nonsense.
  • Fannie/Freddie
Gee that's now almost as much as the bonuses paid to Barney's fav group.
  • smoke screen
I don't think the American public was ever that angry about the bonuses in and of themselves. It was Barney Frank and the MSM who said that there was "populist anger" over the AIG bonuses. The real "populist anger" is over the 100+ billion dollar bailout of AIG with literally no oversight of how our public funds are spent.
That being said, I don't think there's anything wrong with being angry about the bonuses. You can't have banks and insurance giants operating like private companies when they're funded like federal agencies. If this money that AIG was a lifeline that was the minimum necessary to save the entire financial system, how is it that they have 400 million to spare for bonuses? This "bonus anger" pro and con debate is nothing more than a smokescreen on so many levels.
  • Not about wealth envy
I dont think it is about wealth envy Neal. Especially coming from you, I am surprised about how you view the American taxpayers money being spent. I think it is more that bonuses are supposed to be(or I thought) a reward for the company doing well. AIG obviously is doing extremely poorly.
  • Bonuses
    Michael,

The receiver has the authority in bankruptcy to allow or disallow any payments made from the company. It really depends upon the explaination of the proposed payment.

If these bonuses were contractual in nature, the BK court would probably allow the payments. I think everyone has a misconception of how bankruptcy Ch.11 works. Any and all payments, assets, etc., can be ordered disgorged(gotten back) from the recipient of the payment if later it is shown to have been made erroneously or fraudulently.

I am, and would be more concerned that the USGubmint is is even making taxpayer money available to private corporations in the first place. There is no provision in the Constitution to cover what they are doing and it should have never happened in the first place. The only thing that was happening was the folks at Goldman, JPM, Citi were at severe risk of going under and throwing the US financial system into utter chaos. The bailouts did nothing for the little guy, but it did save Goldman, JPM,...after all, we don't want the US monetary policy to go down with the makers. These guys have been setting policy since the establishment of the FED(federal reserve, which is a PRIVATE company of bankers, for the only reason for existance is to serve the bankers). They were made whole(covered their losses) at the expense of the taxpayers. These guys don't have any political allegiance, they whore themselves to which ever political party will allow them to do what they want with little interference.
  • The real anger
Is that our so-called reps in Washington will claim they didn't know about these bonuses either.

    Bull
  • Bonuses are Cover for the Real Issue
Military aircraft release flares when an AA missile is fired at them to divert the munition from its target. The bonus broo-ha-ha is the same thing.
Find the recipients of the BILLIONS of US Treasury bailout money, the counterparties to the swaps which were paid in full by US Treasury money and you will have the real story. Do you think that AIG brass are idiots? Bailout was likely the plan all along. Perhaps those who wrote the bad bets (credit default swaps) for AIG are somewhere on the winning end of these bets? Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!
  • For the 5 billionth time, Neal...
...the payout of bonuses to AIG employees is not wealth envy! The reason I am a little angry about it is the reason they were able to pay the bonuses in the first place; US TAXPAYERS BAILED THEM OUT, instead of AIG using a facility called BANKRUPTCY! I doubt a receiver would allow bonuses to be paid while the company is in bankruptcy! Maybe he would've allowed bonuses to be paid, but he's be using AIG's money, not the American taxpayers!
  • you want wealth envy?
i'm confused here. i thought wealth envy was a bad thing. you said, "Well, maybe the time has come again" that people would "raised their pitchforks" again.
so its alright now to have wealth envy, because you said so?
  • You left out the part about Chris Dodd
Slobbering Barney, Tax Cheat Geithner and the other liberal hypocrites who are behind this mess. Ultimately, it was Geithner who agreed to it.

And Neal, as you correctly pointed out, a contract is a legally-binding agreement. So let the liberals whine and howl and perform more kabuki theater on capitol hill to pacify their dumb mass electorates. Nothing will change until we elect new leadership.
