It looks like the Obama administration is willing to go to the U.S. Supreme Court if necessary to avoid releasing the batch of detainee abuse photos in dispute. Jamie Dupree has all the details.

Meanwhile, The Daily Telegraph seems to be dead set on stirring up the terrorists and further endangering troops. Karen Tum covers their antics in the Swampland blog.

What others are saying

  • For those who think waterboarding is "torture"
Compaired to what terrorists do to our captured / missing soldiers waterboarding is a ticklefest. How quickly you forget about Nick Berg, Daniel Pearl, Staff Sergeant Maupin, the thousands at the World Trade Center and others who have suffered at the hands of theses terrorists. These terrorists are ready and willing to annihilate themselves in order to kill an American or infedel. Look at it from a Soldiers point of view. If waterboarding works to get information then let it be.

Reading all the comments on about how "waterboarding is bad" just reinforces my opinion that there are too many people trying to make "ethical" decisions from the comfort of their lazy boy. I agree with Former Army Officer..."If you don't want to waterboard, then get the hell out of the way and let me do it."
  • GOP/Republicans finally diagnosed as mentally ill!
    http://www.latimes.com/features/health/la-he-bitterness25-2009may25,0,4544029.story

Read this story about how "bitter people" have now been categorized as a official mental illness, it dawned on me when I listen to 104.1 FM it fits the commentators as well as their looney callers, all crying, whining, 24/7 bitter to the core!
  • To Club-a-Liberal
Great points. Couldn't have said it better myself.
  • Couldn't or wouldn't answer my questions!
    Fred,
Just in case you didn't know "Respect is earned" and in Bush's case, he never earned one ioata of respect!
Club-a-Liberal, here's a second chance to quit avoiding my questions!
You right-to-lifers are always screaming that life begins at the "Moment of Conception!"
By using your tired and warn out screed, then how come Social Security doesn't recognize you as a person until you're born?
Do you mean to tell me that life doesn't begin at conception? That's not what all right-to-lifers have been bellowing about for years! So here's my question again: Who determines the moment that life begins? You have to start somewhere on the clock! Why is it called "your birthday" and not "your conception day?" Huh!
Oh yah, you talk a bad story about war, however until your yellow chickenhawk back serves in one talk a back seat and shut up,chickenhawks like you are a dime a dozen, you know just like your hero Neal is!
  • Club-a liberal
You're blistering today, aren't you, Club?

I'm not sure how my adopting an on-line name effects your ability to take my comments seriously, unless your real name is Club-a-Liberal, in which case I begin to understand your anger.

And as a nation, keeping the moral high ground is important. Torture does not produce accurate information. What it produces is confessions to knowledge that the person being tortured doesn't have. In other words, torture is a great way to get someone to admit to a connection between Saddam Husein and Al Qaida when none existed. It was used in just this way and it was at the direction of Cheney. Torture info = propaganda. Torture info = truth? not so much.

    http://www.mcclatchydc.com/227/story/66622.html
And by the way, my real name is Scott if you'd rather use that.
  • Sorry for typos
I noticed a couple of typos in my last post. I think you can still get the point. Last paragraph I wrote "nation that doesn't", I meant does.

BTW, this war thing is not a freakin' sporting event with rules. It's horrible. The object is to win, and to win quickly as possible. Your bleeding heart tactics, ironically, cause more death. Are you too stupid to see that? Yes, we dropped the bombs and killed 200,000 in WWII. But guess what? that ended the war. If we would have done it the lib way, we would still be fighting and millions more would have died - but at least we would have been moral and ethical right??? Good grief, man - Wake up, children are not this naive.
  • respect
Alabamastan so you want respect, like the libs have respected Bush for the last 8 years? I saw a great bumper sticker the other day.

I'll respect your President, the way you respected mine.
  • To those appalled by torture....
The braindead mantra I see here from a number of posters is displayed by quotes like this:
"with the lights off, you can't tell us from the radical islamists."
"we are supposed to be better than they are. not military but ethically."

So, the dogma is that we need to be moral by not using waterboarding to get info against people who want to kill us to save innocent American lives?

OK...so, I guess the converse must be true to you libs as well; i.e. you must also believe that if 2,000 americans are saved solely because an attack was thwarted because we waterboarded a terrorist to get that info, then we are immoral???

Let me spoonfeed it to you naive mouthbreathers: We know that a terrorist detainee has details on an upcoming bombing in NYC. He won't talk. Assume a bomb then goes off in NYC, 10,000 innocent women and children are dead. I assume your response will be, "Well, gee, I know it is pretty bad that 10,000 innocents are dead, but I am so happy and proud that are gov't didn't pressure that terrorist in talking. Good thing we have our morals still."

I submit to you that a nation that doesn't allows its own innocent civilians, its brothers, and sisters, and children to die horrific deaths without doing what it takes to defend itself from ragtag lunatics is the immoral nation and a cowardly nation. You libs have feminized every aspect of society. There was a time that defending your family with any means possible was considered the honorable and ONLY thing to do. Now, you want to pat yourselves on the back and congratulate yourselves because although you could have saved your family from dying, you did the "right thing" by not aggressively going after the killer. You are a disgrace.
  • A comment made by Jeff over on Jamie Duprees blog...
Jeff is correct. If Obama never wanted these photos out he could classify them as being top secret citing that they are a threat to national security. He could easily do this. I suspect that he wants them to come out through the Freedom of Information Act. If the administration does not classify these images they will absolutely lose the court battle with the ACLU. I am thinking this is what he wants. He wants there to be a "democratic process" to the release of the photos. The ACLU will be praised for fighting the Federal Government and exposing their lies. Obama will get a slap on the wrist for trying to protect National Security and the Bush administration could be dragged through a horrible legal proceding. I think this is why Cheney and company came out so quickly when the Obama administration said it would release pictures and bring up administration officials on charges. This is a big deal. Forget your party lines and defend the law. The truth is always better than a lie.
  • On IA torture.
I know they do, as does every muslim military and government. When those that pitch fits when our allies do it, pitch fits over our enemies doing it, I'll take them serious. Either way, and whatever their motive, they are giving aid and comfort to the enemy. What's happening in US facilities is still absurdly weak.

I don't care what happens to terrorists and those who side with them, and I notice torture works on them. I'm still of the WWII frame of mind that it's okay to respond to terror with terror.
  • Where to begin...
Here we go, from top to bottom:

    (1) Alabamastan - >>>>"I find it difficult to take anyone's comments seriously when they use words like "Obozo," "Dumbocrats," and "Musloons." Such silliness reveals a great lack of maturity.<<<<< ANS: Yes, as opposed to the serious debate offered by someone named "Alabamastan"!

    (2) Chickenbone Bill - (a) "How many unwanted babies have you adopted?" ANS: see my other post to this type of irrelevant question. Because I don't want unborn unwanted babies murdered, I now have to adopt them?? There are a lot of unwanted foreclosed homes out there not that I don't like, do i need to get a mortgage and assume all those loans to be allowed to have an opinion against irresponsible behavior? (b) "Why can't a fetus register with Social Security, and be recogonized with it's own Social Security number?" ANS. That again is irrelevant as it is subject to politics. Why can a murderer be charged with a double murder when he kills a preganant woman? (c) "If conception is when life begins, who determines the moment of conception?" ANS: We have 6.7B people living on earth, and I think 6B have died over the years. Of these nearly 13B people that have lived on our planet, can you name one single person that bypassed the stage of conception?

    (3) jacob - yes, more stuff happens in frats then to what happened to these throatcutters you love so much. Deaths from frat hazings are seen all too often. How many throatcutters have died at the hands of that evil club-med known as Gitmo?
  • what are these troops gonna do when they get out?
what are these troops gonna do when they get out? probably go into law enforcement.
  • I just found this story...
I dunno guys this is starting to rustle feathers in the Pentagon...

    http://www.reuters.com/article/featuredCrisis/idUSN28341544
  • ad hominem
Sorry, but I find it difficult to take anyone's comments seriously when they use words like "Obozo," "Dumbocrats," and "Musloons." Such silliness reveals a great lack of maturity. Not to mention referring to other posters as idiots and morons. Can't we work to keep some little bit of respect here?
  • Lent Visor
I'm not worried about Bush voters. I'm worried about the soldiers still overseas and inciting another 9/11.
  • Questions for Club-A-Liberal
My, My, Club-a-Liberal aren't you the cute one today, trying to change the subject to abortion!
Well here's a few questions for you:
How many unwanted babies have you adopted?
Why can't a fetus register with Social Security, and be recogonized with it's own Social Security number?
If conception is when life begins, who determines the moment of conception?
    Answer these if you can.
  • Ivan, Rex and Jacob
Ivan I hope you are wrong, you've been right about alot but please not this! Rex, this one difference wouldn't make him an idiot, but different.

Jacob, that is what this is, a discussion of different sides of an issue. And we all manage to do it without the childish asides ala Copy!!
  • They need to be released
Obama is dead wrong on this. We have the right to know what our government is doing. These photos are factual evidence. It's ridiculous to say we're going to keep horrible failures of our government under wraps because releasing them might make people mad. Nothing will change if it's all kept secret, and things will only get worse.

I suspect that a lot of people are far more interested in just not knowing than they are in the well being of our soldiers. Or, for the Republicans, in covering up their own crimes.

These photos also need to be on the news, especially FOX, no matter how bad. Bush voters need to know what they voted for, instead of their current fantasy.

Hopefully our Supreme Court makes Obama release them. I'm not exactly confident, though. The court's right wing doesn't believe the law applies to our government, after all.
  • Here is a story that kinda flew under the radar...
This is all I am going to post about this for now...

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20090528/wl_mideast_afp/usiraqrightsmilitaryunrest

Of course there is more on this out there. This one is clean enough to post here.
  • It's simple
If all of you libs would just stop beating down your common sense with your ridiculous ideology we could come together as one and be a strong Nation once again.
  • To Rex Machina
I am open to any name calling you may have for me. I would do exactly the same to anyone else making this sort of claim about our troops. Unfortunately the evidence will start leaking out. Some of it is already leaking out. I am not going to post any links in this post. Just start searching around and you will find several pictures. Look man I know it sounds crazy to talk about this and trust me I don't want to even post about this here. I just don't know how to deal with the information I have learned. I don't want to accept that there has been horrible abuses by soldiers. What troubles me even more is that apparently some of the photos and video has US and Iraqi soldiers in them. So if this is correct then Iraqi soldiers are also involved and are abusing their own. I am almost shaking typing this post. I never thought I would be talking about such a sensitive issue like this. I just don't know what is going to happen once this gets out in a big way. Once the pictures really start getting around there will be no stopping it. I am sure that efforts are being made internally by the government to remove pictures from the net as they show up. These pictures would be a deal breaker for the US.
  • Restricted Vision.
Ivan, I'm still waiting for your condemnation of the beheading of Daniel Pearl. ................................................................................................Ok, I've waited long enough! Did you forget that the wonderful Muslim religion is "truly" a religion of piece(I'll take a piece of this and I'll take a piece of that and pretty soon I'll have all of the pieces!). Ivan, I'm not really coming down on you, I just feel that you're a bit short sighted when it comes to the actions of others against the United States of America.
  • Copyleft's right
So that's the way the rabid right views American principles and ideals.

with the lights off, you can't tell us from the radical islamists. we are supposed to be better that they are. not military but ethically.

but if we were an ethical nation, we wouldn't be invading a country who posed no risk at all to our national sovereignty
  • @Copyleft
In every single case, to date, of attributable abuse, detainee neglect, unauthorized use of force, murder, etc, the individuals involved were investigated, and, where warranted, punished. Specifically in regard to the photos in question, there is no good reason to release them; and Obama finally realized this fact. His original grandstanding for his ultra-leftist base suddenly ran into the brick wall of common sense. Those images pertaining to Abu Ghraib are irrelevant since the cases against the perpetrators were prosecuted and punishments meted out. The other photos depicting EIT have no tangible use in any investigation since there is none ongoing. I applaud Obama’s decision, having the sense to listen to his commanders on the ground. So, why does the ACLU want them published?

@Ivan, I don’t normally resort to ad-hominem, but quite simply, your statements show that you are a complete idiot. I challenge you to produce a single tangible item of proof.
  • Damn the ACLU
3 people were waterboarded, one of which was the killer of Daniel Pearl, Khalid Sheikh Mohammad. The video of the beheading was horrible to watch, yet liberals are more concerned about the killer's feelings. If you don't want to waterboard, then get the hell out of the way and let me do it.
  • To those that say my comments are ridiculous...
They are. Completely ridiculous and I am worried that soon it will be common knowledge. I understand the consequences of what I am claiming. It hurts me so bad to admit that I think our soldiers are doing something like this. I sat one the sidelines when I first heard about the abuse. I called people names that spoke of abuse at Abu Ghraib cause I didn't want to believe it. The pictures arrived and I was shocked. Now more pictures are out there and more are not released yet. What would make Obama decide not to release the newest pictures. We already know about waterboarding and detainees being stripped to their underwear or worse and being dragged around by a leash. These pictures are way worse and alot are from GB Cuba.
  • This is getting old
This board used to be a great place for discussion and exchange of ideas. Now, we have idiots placing the most tired of ad hominem attacks on here. According to our less intelligent posters, Obama is jeopardizing our country if he releases the photos. However, by not releasing the pictures, he's covering up a great scandal. Either way you spin it, he's a horrible president who can't do anything right.
This sounds frighteningly like the liberal logic that Bush was always wrong no matter what he did.

"a$$ pyramid with these psychos and other jokes done at every frat house in the country. "

What kind of frat were you in? I was in a frat and I don't remember anything close to this. I supppose it makes sense that the people who whine the loudest are closet homos.
  • To Club-a-Liberal and Joyce M/Blythe
There have been multiple sets of photos leaked. The ones from Abu Ghraib, several new sodomy pictures, and fake pictures from some kind of weird Iraqi abuse fetish website. The ones released from the fetish website are part of a disinformation campaign of some kind. There are hundreds more photos out there that Obama is not releasing because the abuse goes WAYYYYY beyond just waterboarding. These pictures would be damning not only to US troops, but the entire US military and everything they are doing world wide. A part of me doesn't want these pictures coming out, but another part thinks that they must be released. Someone's head needs to roll for these atrocities.
  • Weak and soft
So that's the way the rabid right views American principles and ideals, hmm? Not surprising.

Yeah, it's SHAMEFUL the way so many Americans seem obsessed with the rule of law, and human rights, and freedom, and all that garbage that just gets in the way of torture and murder. Just awful. Truly.

Sickos. No wonder you keep losing. America wants nothing to do with this kind of cowardice any more.
  • What detainee abuse? The pics are of interrogation and living conditions.
Ivan's ridiculous claims would be better than the sad wimpy truth. Many of 'the religion of peace' won't let an excuse to get violent and kill a few infidels pass, but our interrogation methods are pathetic by arab standards.

Still, I bet more Christians in SW Asia are murdered over this than muslim's, or Sikhs (most of us Americans are too ignorant to know the difference), rather, since an innocent Sikh man was the only domestic retalliatory death after 9/11.
  • @Chicken$hit Bill
    >>>>>How much time you got under your belt in Iraq/Afgahn,1st Gulf War, Nam, Korea,WW2 or any other conflict that Americans have died in, since WW1?<<<<

Great comeback, dolt! Did you get that one from "Countdown with Keith Overbite " or was it Michael Moore?

So, using your great liberal logic, I guess I can't comment on the basketball last night because I never played in the NBA. I guess I can't say that child molestors should be executed because afterall I never molested a kid and have never been executed before.

Question for you moron using the same logic: How much time have you spent with your limbs pulled apart and brain sucked out in the womb to know that abortion is just a choice and doesn't hurt anyone?

    What a maroon you are.
  • Love Your Comments ClubA
    keep them coming
  • Message to Ivan
Please be advised that there is absolutely to evidence of the abuse that you claim occured. As much as people hated Bush, these pictures would already have been leaked to the public if they existed. In fact, I truly expect some of the 2,000 pictures that Oabama has will be "leaked" if it serves this administration's purpose. Yes abuse happens in time of war on all sides and that is unfortunate. I shudder to think what the "other side" does to POWs - well acutally, we know because muslims can't help but brag about their misdeeds. Male rape is an obsession with them. No big surprise that allegations of rape abound as they are fixated on the subject of men on men sex. (A natural result of a truly repressive ideology.) That is a part of middle eastern culture, not so much in the US. (I can't speak for Canada, Britain, Australia, etc) However the American military is the most highly trained and disciplined army in the world. They are fully aware that the media will seize on any opportunity to depict them in a negative light. We owe them a debt of gratitude and whether you agree or not, they are good-will ambassadors for the US. You would know that if you had ever met a refugee from another country. You sir, have been duped. BTW - What's with your comment "Whoever is responsible for these horrible crimes should be put in jail for the rest of their life. Hell I would even say drop him off in the middle of Afghanistan in one of the illegal gun and drug markets and let him fend for himself." - how interesting the choice of words. So ironic that you are so willing to advocate violence to those you disagree with and yet abhor water-boarding of islamic terrorists who are avowed murderers.
  • the war will never be over
Club-a-Liberal, we haven't become like nazi germany. we become what we are, a government ruled by big banks and the military-industrial complex. and the big banks like war. they don't care if our boys run around with both hands and guns tied behind their backs.
we are told this war on terror will be a long one. the big banks salivate at that news, along with the military-industrial complex.
  • Vacation in Cuba Pics
They could release some of those pics with those brave detainees crying like babies after they were menaced by a tumblebug on one of those motivational posters and the caption; "Terrorists, they only look tough"
  • Club-a-Liberal's got a yellow spine?
    Club-a Liberal,
How much time you got under your belt in Iraq/Afgahn,1st Gulf War, Nam, Korea,WW2 or any other conflict that Americans have died in, since WW1?
  • Ivan
I thought that was just at Abu Ghraib(sp)? Those people have been punished. If that is still going on then yes we have a problem. And no, we don't want those pictures to get out, just punish the ones that are guilty.
  • @Ivan
If you are going to make those accusations against our troops, you better have some hard evidence. It's amazing that you have this incredible knowledge of the photos, while the liberal media, seething with anti-American hatred and who would love more than anything to find these pics, can only come up with, at most, a couple of pics with a detainee with underwear on his head or being walked on a leash. Give me a freakin' break.

BTW, in case you have forgotten, many of the people involved from Abu Graib have been jailed for a long time for doing such "horrific" crimes as creating an a$$ pyramid with these psychos and other jokes done at every frat house in the country.

Besides, for me, I could care less whether they rammed a 2x4 so far up the buts of these terrorists that splinters came out of their noses. The problem with our country is the oipposite of what you see - the problem is we have become weak and soft. If we have become Nazi Germany as you say, this war would have ended a long time ago. Instead, we continue to dither around with both hands and guns tied behind our soldiers' backs.
  • Only a fool....
can fall for this nonsense. Hey, you Hussein voters, are you really this gullible? Aren't you the least appalled by the way the OBozo mob holds you people for absolute fools? A child can see through this.

Here is a man who campaigned against military tribunals and the abuses at Gitmo. That was his big thing. Just a few weeks ago, he was absolutely ADAMANT about releasing those photos because "I promised transparency". Now, all of a sudden, in a 180 turn, he is adamant about not releasing the photos! He comes up with the following gem, as if he just originated this shocking discovery, "I think the photos would enflame hostilities and endanger our troops." No $hit, Sherlock! You just realized that now, genius? That's been the argument from anyone with half a brain for the past two years.

You Obama drones don't even question why he did the 180? What is it with you dolts?

Two things at play: (1) the moron Dumbocrats realized this "waterboarding is torture" scam was backfiring on them. They realized they, themselves, not only knew about it but approved it. The SF wrinkled plastic face was in trouble also. So, they simply decided to drop the photo thing and try to bury this whole issue quickly. They knew the photos would keep the story going as riots across the world would happen again from the peace-loving Musloons. (2) OBozo is going to Egpyt next week to speak to the Muzzies again. Here you have a man who is obsessed with hearing the crowd applause. Now, how would it look, if the photos were released, and riots are happening all over the place as the Great Orator is on tour over there and trying give a speech to the Musloons? Not a good picture of a man who campaigned on the slogan of "We need to be liked again by the rest of the world."
  • I REAAALLLYY hate to say this...
I really really hate saying this cause I wish it wasn't true. The reason the pictures were not released is because a great number of the pictures as well as some video depicts US soldiers raping detainees. I am not joking. Our wonderful soldiers who we hold in such high regard in this country as being the best this country has to offer are depicted in photographs having forced intercourse with detainees. Some pictures depict our soldiers using inanimate objects to sodomize detainees. Now look...water boarding is one thing. Rape is another. If this is true we have become Nazi Germany. Maybe even worse. I do not understand how. You know I find it incredibly ironic that we removed Sadam because of all the horrific things he was doing to his people. Sadam used rape rooms and filled mass graves with the dead. I don't know if I recognize my country anymore. This is sick plain and simple. Whoever is responsible for these horrible crimes should be put in jail for the rest of their life. Hell I would even say drop him off in the middle of Afghanistan in one of the illegal gun and drug markets and let him fend for himself. I am sure the locals will treat these people well.
