HOW MUCH YOU WANNA BET YOUR COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER IS A LIBERAL?

The Young America's Foundation has been keeping tabs on who is being invited to speak at commencement ceremonies around the country ... notice that I am not one of them ... and it won't shock you to hear that far more liberals are invited to speak at graduation ceremonies than conservatives. Why is this? Well it is very simple: liberals are preaching to the choir where as conservatives are more likely to spill the beans about the realities facing these fresh graduates.

So here is the list of just some of the liberals invited to speak at the nation's top colleges this year:

President Barack Obama, Notre Dame
Vice President Joe Biden, Wake Forest University
Hillary Clinton, New York University
Rahm Emanuel, George Washington University
Matt Lauer, Harvard University
Katie Couric, Princeton University
Ellen DeGeneres, Tulane University
Deval Patrick, governor of Massachusetts, MIT
Steven Chu, secretary of Energy Department, California Institute of Technology
Oprah Winfrey, Duke University
Wynton Marsalis, Northwestern University
Vicente Fox, Emory University
Gwen Ifill, Georgetown University
Suze Orman, University of Illinois
Tom Brokaw, Fordham University

Now, only five recognizable conservatives were selected to speak at the nation's top colleges this year:

Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.), Miami University
Laura Bush, Southern Methodist University
Rep. Jack Kingston (R-Ga.), University of Georgia
Judge J. Harvie Wilkinson III, University of Virginia
U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Morris Arnold, University of Arkansas

What others are saying

  • No
No, Brian Peppers, Hitler was not a socialist, he was an ardent anti-communist, as well as, but quite distinctly an anti-liberal and anti-democrat. Socialist in the name does not refer to leftism and Marxism. It certainly doesn't refer to liberalism and modern progressive politics (which are also hugely dissimilar from the far left).

North Korea is officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. But it is not democratic, a republic, or the "People's".

All of that aside, the Nazis' evil did not lay in their overall economic policies, but their right wing militarism, racism, and authoritarianism, except when they intertwined.

And, again, it was conservative Republicans who sympathized with the Nazis in this country, before it became unpopular.
  • Hitler Was a Socialist
To LintAdvisor, and all of the other collectivist fruitcups: Hitler was one of yours!

"Nazi" was slang for National Socialist German Workers' Party. Keyword: socialist.

Your daily remedial ed is complete; you may now break for recess at Jamba Juice.
  • Auburn Speaker
Auburn Had "Bo Jackson" I couldnt begin to tell you what Party Bo is affiliated with..
  • College students
Well what do you expect from a bunch of whiny idealists that don't pay any taxes? It doesn't affect them..yet. With this economy, it's not going to affect them for a loooooong time. As most will be fighting with retirees for those jobs at walmart and Mickey D's. These pseudo adults who think they are in the real world because they are in college (yeah get up whenever you want, go to classes IF you want, and drink and party all night..real world) don't realize that college is actually the last playground. Wait until they actually start paying for their student loans, electricity, cable, cell phones, heat, ac, food, car, insurance ...etc etc...Then we'll see how much they like getting taxed.
  • YU commencement speaker
David Shatz was the Commencement Speaker at Yeshiva University this year. I would not call him a liberal.
  • Hugo
I don't know that Obama has ever said "I have the most left-wing voting record in the Senate", but I know he did.

I know that because I am capable of deduction.
  • Does it matter?
Clearly, there are more important issues than this to be discussing. What about the four muslims arrested in New York (the same day Obama spoke about wanting to release GITMO terrorists on US soil?) Now that's just an odd coincidence, isn't it? Not.
  • Actually
Bill Y. Club, it was Republican conservatives who sympathized with the Nazis in this country, before that became overwhelmingly unpopular. And if Hitler hadn't been racist (including anti-semitic) his legacy would be nothing like it is, if he would have done anything significant at all.
  • Gen. Lance L. Smith spoke at Virginia Tech and was quite conservative. I loved it, though the typical lib students around me didn't seem to enjoy it much, and i think a liberal arts major actually got up and left during it. Here's a video of the speech: http://www.unirel.vt.edu/audio_video/2009-commencement-smith.html Too bad everyone wasn't an econ graduate like myself or maybe they would have enjoyed it more.
  • Nonsense
First of all, that list is off. Vicente Fox is not a liberal, he's a conservative. Others on there aren't really liberals either. And it isn't at all comprehensive.

Second of all, all the people listed are politicians or celebrities. Democrats and liberals are over-represented in both groups, especially after the elections. All the Bush administration predecessors of those on the list got to give commencement speeches during their term, even though they were much less qualified.

Ultimately, there's just more liberals worth letting speak. Conservatives are fewer in politics, and there's not that many who are worthwhile and capable of giving a decent speech. There's few conservative celebrities who aren't worthless people, and few who've done anything especially great outside of politics. Even most impressive business leaders are liberals, or at least not conservatives.

And conservatives "spilling the beans about the realities facing the candidates" is nonsense. Beyond conservatism generally relying on a tenuous grip on reality, it's a commencement speech, not a political address.

Really, there's far too many conservative commencement speakers considering how poor many of them are. Colleges essentially have affirmative action for them, so the college doesn't seem too liberal or whatnot.
  • Ellen D's speech
She may be swinging from a different branch, but after hearing her speech at Tulane via the web, I congratulate her humor and candidness.
  • Cheese with that whine?
Graduation is a time for optimism, not a time to hear the sky is falling. Conservative/Republicans are not very attractive right now for more than one reason.

I doubt if all the speakers were chosen because of their political view. I think holding a significant position in government usually or accomplishing something important will generate an invite. I'm sure as soon as Neal does one of the two he will be in high demand.
  • amazing
How could anybody admire a blood-sucking liberal? They're worthless, lazy, detrimental to society, and bitter. YEAH, that's who I want encouraging me to go out in the world to live my dreams!
  • Relevance to Venue
I'll avoid picking through each list item here, but it seems many of the speakers have relevance to the venue either by name prominence alone or personal background/position to the specialty of the venue. I think this points more to the problem conservatives (including republicans) have. More liberals have their name "in the spotlight" now and therefore have more of a chance to spread their insights. If conservatism is to make a comeback then they need to work more on connecting with the people by playing the popular game (not their strong suit) or by representing policy change which speaks for the people. FAIRTAX!!
  • Speaking of Speeches
Read this speech when you have the time:
    http://wattsupwiththat.com/2009/05/14/now-thats-a-commencement-speech/#more-7841
  • Chalk one up for U.T.
I'd rather have Dolly speak at my graduation than any of the intellectual-liberal-gnostic elite.

Schools that are toadies to the powerful are part of the problem.
  • the real reason for liberal universitys
In the 60's the colleges became a refuge for high school grads, who understandably, were looking for a way to avoid being drafted in to the army(and believe it or not the marines).College deferments were available and if your choice of major was medical, law, or some advanced degree you could be in school for 6 years or more. You could still be drafted after graduating because your new skills were needed in the"new army" but unlikely because of your age after graduating.A major in liberal arts was choosen often because it was easier to pass for these under-achiever,draft dodging students(and a flunk-out meant instant ticket to Vietnam)but it was only a 2 year choice unless you became a "education major".This allowed you to remain in college forever by taking any course the college offered(basketweaving, music appreciation, surfing 101) in the name of "becoming a teacher". Jump forward after being a "student" for 10 years with a phd in education, what do you do then?Your only qualified to do what you have trained to do which is teach in a university(or public school)So you become a college professor with no real world experience outside of the college campus, where you pass on your "vast wealth of knowledge" to influence the next generation of students looking to escape real life.Eventually all the employees of the colleges are these real life escapees because the over achievers couldn't wait to get out to beat the world and have successful careers. The old saying is true"those that can do and those that can't teach".
  • A simpler reason...
Liberal speakers have inspiring ideas to present. Conservatives have tired old complaints and lectures.
  • Vicente Fox
Ummm he is not a lefty, he is a member of the conservative party in Mexico.
  • For our next trick!
Lookup how many of these universities are private institutions!

Typical conservative spew. "We love the free market until it tells us to get out, then we whine and complain about those derned lib'ruls!"

Only when it's politically convenient, boys and girls.
  • Speakers
JamesJ, you could have added Hitler to that list: had he not been racist and anti-gay, liberals would adore him as much as Marx.
  • Johns Hopkins Commencement Speaker:
Nancy Pelosi is the speaker for Johns Hopkins this year.
  • Dolly Parton
Dolly Parton was the commencement speaker at the University of Tennessee. A helluva better speaker than I expected - and OH NO, she mentioned GOD! I was actually impressed. She received an honorary doctorate - so she's now called Dr. Dolly, or Double D (as if she wasn't already)
  • Speakers
Colleges would ask Pol Pot, Mao, Stalin, and Che Guevera to speak at graduations if they were still alive
  • Let's Break This Down
    President Barack Obama, Notre Dame
Vice President Joe Biden, Wake Forest University
    Hillary Clinton, New York University
    Rahm Emanuel, George Washington University

Ok, the first 4 speakers are 4 of the most powerful people in the executive branch of our government. For the next four years they will be Democrats. If it was a McCain administration, this list would be a little shorter, wouldn't it?

Matt Lauer, Harvard University-are you sure he's a liberal? Has he come out and said so?
Katie Couric, Princeton University-same for Katie-has she said "Look at me! I'm a lefty!"?

Ellen DeGeneres, Tulane University-she's gay and an admitted liberal. Which would only make sense since most conservative hate gays.

Deval Patrick, governor of Massachusetts, MIT-Oh noes!!! The Governor of Massachussetts spoke at a University in...MASSACHUSSETTS!! It's a liberal conspiracy!!!!

Steven Chu, secretary of Energy Department, California Institute of Technology-Wow, Cal-Tech invited a scientist to speak at their commencement. Shocking!

Oprah Winfrey, Duke University-A big fan of the President, I hear.

Wynton Marsalis, Northwestern University-a musician, I guess he might be liberal.

Vicente Fox, Emory University-WHOOPS. Whole lot of fail here-Fox was the head of the conservative party in Mexico and a former president of Coca-Cola in Mexico. Move him to your other list, Neal.

Gwen Ifill, Georgetown University-has she made public her political beliefs? Most true journalists try not to talk about such things.

Suze Orman, University of Illinois-admitted Democrat, and gay to boot!

Tom Brokaw, Fordham University-are sure he's a liberal? Reference, please.

You are such an assclown sometimes, Neal.
  • Gag II
Another thread with nonsense news I won't be revisiting today! Gonna have to hit some blogs.
  • No problema!
Hey, look at the bright side, the people from the schools who had lefties speaking will wind up working for the ones who went to the other schools. It all shakes out in the end.
  • libertarian
i have a guess that the libertarian speakers at commencement ceremonies is zero. especially here in georgia
  • Commencement Speakers
In fairness, it seems pretty reasonable for the Energy Secretary to be at Cal Tech, even though his philosophy would be at odds with the mindset of most of the graduates.
  • Ben Stein
I know you said "MAJOR" universities, but Ben Stein did speak at Liberty U in Lynchburg, VA. Not exactly a liberal college, but whatever.
  • Fred Smith
Fred Smith, founder of FedEx spoke at my brothers graduation in 2007 from Ole Miss. GREAT SPEECH! I am pretty sure he is not liberal!!!
  • So Christopher Buckley, son of conservative icon William F. Buckley and the third person on the YAF list, doesn't count as a "recognizable conservative"?

Similarly, is Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy insufficient to be called a recognizable conservative? Sure he's a swing vote, but he's a conservative swing vote.
  • To the victor go the spoils
Why would an institution of higher learning want to pay an honorarium to a "loser" to give a speech? And why would same institution pay somebody to preach something counter to the (organic mulch) that said institution has been preaching to its disciples? The people running this show are intelligentsia!

Those same institutions raise their prices out of all proportion to the CPI, they have to spend their ill-gotten gains on something. It might as well be that.
  • wtf
Who the hell would invite Vicente Fox to speak anywhere?
  • Liberal Speakers
Missed one POTUS at USNA speaking to the new ensigns and LTs
  • % of republican speakers is in-line
Pew Research reveals that about 27% of Americans now self-identify as republican. (see http://pewresearch.org/pubs/773/fewer-voters-identify-as-republicans)

Out of the list of 20 commencement speakers, 5 are republican, or about 25%, pretty much in line with the 27% figure from the Pew poll.
  • NGCSU
Zell Miller delivered the commencement address at North Georgia College & State University.
