EAT LIKE THERE'S NO TOMORROW

If Chef Hans Rueffert were any less tenacious, you might say he he was cut down in his prime--but as hard as he's fought, it's clear he believes his best days are still to come.

After years of running his family's gourmet restaurant at the Woodbridge Inn in Jasper, GA, and producing his own TV specials and cooking shows, Chef Hans' career reached a high point when he was selected to compete on "The Next Food Network Star" out of more than 8,000 applicants. Just two weeks after placing third in the competition, Hans was diagnosed with advanced stomach cancer.

Two years and endless surgeries and complications later, Hans is not just surviving when the doctors told him not to expect too much. He's still following his passion and supporting his young family--his wife Amy and their children, Finn, 9, and Ella, 7--during this trying time.

His new cookbook, "Eat Like There's No Tomorrow," is more than a collection of recipes--it's a story and a prayer. Hans employs his classical culinary training alongside vivid writing and compelling photography to explain why food, for its ability to bring people together, may just be the thing most worth living for.

"Eat Like There's No Tomorrow" is self-published and is available at www.hanscooks.com for $24.95.

I'd be willing to bet that Neal isn't "making a buck" off of this. It looks to me like he admires Chef Rueffert, enjoyed the restaurant, and suggested the cookbook on his blog. Jday20, if you have a blog and write that your readers might enjoy a particular book, should we assume you are only "putting and ad up" (sic)?
  • Great Spotlight
I picked up the book because the cover photography was inviting. I didn't know a thing about the book or its author.
I'm so glad I did. This book has recipes, sure, and the photos are great, yes; but it is far more profound than that. You will be touched as you read his story; I certainly was. This book makes a great gift for yourself or for a friend. I highly recommend it. (BTW, I didn't know it was self-published until I read this article. It is very well done.)
I must eat at the Woodbridge Inn sometime soon!
  • Bravo
Yes - by all means - buy this book if you can! You won't be disappointed. It is so much more than a "cookbook". Thank you Neal bringing attention to Hans. And - do put The Woodbridge on your list of places to dine ....
  • Thanks Neal.
Hey, it's Neal's show and if he wants to "advertise" a book, he can do what he damn well pleases. Besides, I want to hear about Americans who fight for their life instead of whining to the government about how unfair their life is. I'm currently unemployed, but will buy this book for the inspiration and to support this man.
  • Will this get posted?
I have to say that I am saddened Neals Nuze is trying to give us advertisements in such a way as to disguise them as Nuze. I don't blame Neal and the studio for making a buck, but putting and ad up in this manner is just annoying.
  • Atlanta is a small town
Neal - I knew that you'd eventually spotlight Hans' wonderful book! I have the pleasure of being able to help sell it as cashier at the Woodbridge Inn.

I was excited to hear that you dined at the Woodbridge recently and also quite upset that I wasn't working. I wonder if you remember my dad as the caller "Dave from Duluth?" Your ideas were a central part of my upbringing. I'd love it if you and your wife dined with us again soon!
  • The Woodbridge
I've been driving by this for years on my way to Elliay and didn't even know it was there - THANKS!
  • The Woodbridge
The WoodBridge restaurant in Jasper is a great place to eat. It's small and quaint and the food is delicious! Mmm.. Glad to see a little semi-national recognition to a great local favorite.
  • Great Book
This is not just a cookbook. This is a book of hope and inspiration. I read this book cover to cover the same day I bought it. Buy two copies and give one to a friend.
  • Chef Hans
Hans is a very giving and gifted person filled with courage, compassion, and candor. He has given back so much to other cancer survivors, and inspired us too! Get a book for yourself and another as a gift.
  • Hans - Eat Like There Is No Tomorrow
I have followed Hans' blog since he was first diagnosed with cancer. He has been through so much but keeps going. The book is wonderful - buy it.
  • Hans Rueffert
I'm proud to call Hans my friend. He has been a customer and friend of mine for many years now, and his journey has been nothing short of inspirational!
