George Will had another excellent column over the weekend, and a listener brought this paragraph of that column to my attention.

In "Democracy in America," Alexis de Tocqueville anticipated people being governed by "an immense, tutelary power" determined to take "sole charge of assuring their enjoyment and of watching over their fate." It would be a power "absolute, attentive to detail, regular, provident and gentle," aiming for our happiness but wanting "to be the only agent and the sole arbiter of that happiness." It would, Tocqueville said, provide people security, anticipate their needs, direct their industries and divide their inheritances. It would envelop society in "a network of petty regulations -- complicated, minute and uniform." But softly: "It does not break wills; it softens them, bends them, and directs them" until people resemble "a herd of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd."

Read it a couple of times. When you fully understand what de Tocqueville wrote find a government-educated friend and try to explain it to them. If you REALLY want a challenge find someone who voted for Obama - and has not come to regret that vote - and see if you can explain it to them.

What others are saying

  • The ONC (The Original NeoCon)?
From the Alexis de Tocqueville wikipedia page:

"Alexis de Tocqueville came from an old Norman aristocratic family..." (surprise surprise)

"He went as far as openly advocating racial segregation between the European colonists and the "Arabs" through the implementation of two different legislative systems" (no way?)...

In 1851, he "quit political life and retreated to his castle." (like Bush?)

So, sounds to me like a typical neo-con...comes from a long line of rich people, doesn't want to share the money he's "earned from the hard job of being born," is at least partially racist (or in favor of segregation) and doesn't want any "petty regulations" that might interfere with his collecting more money...ahh the greed...and stupidity of middle class libertarians helping the top 2% reach their money fueled dreams...
  • Tocqueville and W
    From Wikipedia:

" After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd."

This is exactly why President W met with such venamous critisism. When America was attacked he acted. His only crime is that he acted.

What's really going to blow some minds in near future will be the discovery that all religion is a lie. God may very well be real and I do believe that there is a creator, but religion is going to be proven 100% to be completely man made in its entirety. What alot of people are going to be pissed about is how religion has been hijacked by international elistists (which aren't religious) who want to use it to expand their power further. Religion is a great target because a mass majority of people on this planet believe in a higher power. This makes them extremely vulnerable to the people out there that know for a fact that religion is a lie but want to use that lie to take advantage of the masses.

that's why i hold christians in contempt. your reply to me is un-christian. its amazing that you call yourself a christian, and in the same instance prove to me how un-christian you are.
..That was the whole point dude. Stop taking yourself so seriously. Nobody cares if you have a god or not, just stop spouting off to people that dont follow your uh..God..uh...idol...uh...satan...uh...tire iron whatever you believe in. Remember it's a FREE COUNTRY.
  • Soft Despotism
Tocqueville also wrote of soft despotism, which he said a democracy would breed in a desire to achieve social equality.

You mention the government taking handouts away...that is what the RFID chip is. Under Obama
s Universal Healthcare plan you will be required to have a RFID chip implanted under your skin. Under the new system that will be implemented very soon you will not be able to function in society even on a basic level without a RFID chip. If they want to ruin you under the new system they can just turn off your chip. You will be invalid and cannot collect your government handout nor will you be able to buy anything or recieve medical care. Hell I wouldn't rule out the possibility that they could have a kill switch installed in the chip. Who knows how advanced these things could be?

  • To the non-believers, more pearls of wisdom
"Liberty cannot be established without morality, nor morality without faith. The health of a democratic society may be measured by the quality of functions performed by private citizens."
    -Alexis de Tocqueville

Sure sounds like the antithesis of the so-called liberal-progressive model, doesn't it?

I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, "Move from here to there" and it will move.

  • To address what t-shirt dr said one hour ago...
Your quote sounds vaguely familiar. You might see that it fits in if you[L=http://1984usa.com/higherlearning/?p=1326]read this article on false flags attacks[/L], especially No.4 and No.5
  • Unfortunate...Very
Unfortunately, 50% or so of the public would seem to think that this would be a good thing. Good luck to us all.
  • Tea-bag DR.
Said.. "all you christian who think gay people are evil, do you eat ham? because your god says not to eat pigs. so you are going to hell. hahahaha"

God bless you tea-bag Dr. Maybe some day you will find the way to true happiness. I will put you on the prayer list this sunday.

Until then shut the hell up!
  • Tocqueville Quotes
The American Republic will endure until the day Congress discovers that it can bribe the public with the public's money.

There are many men of principle in both parties in America, but there is no party of principle.
  • Tocqueville
It is obvious that men who had lived under tyranny would ponder if their own creation would end up the same, A true visionary. I feel confident that the entitlement class went a little too far this time, I think every generation needs to see for themselves how each party works in power, My brother who was an obama supporter is sweating bullets over his sizeable 401k after I forward him some more [change we can believe in] possible increased taxation on the haves to redistribute to the entilement crowd. I wonder if EDGAR CAYCE ever did a reading on our fate.

  • cheney quotes
"Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders.
That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked,
and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the
country to danger. It works the same in any country."

well that not a cheney quote. it was a quote from the number 2 guy from some other country. it sounds like somebody who talked us into going to war in iraq.

    Hermann Goering
  • From Thomas Jefferson...
"God forbid we should ever be twenty years without such a rebellion.
The people cannot be all, and always, well informed. The part which is
wrong will be discontented, in proportion to the importance of the facts
they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions,
it is lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty. ...
And what country can preserve its liberties, if it's rulers are not
warned from time to time, that this people preserve the spirit of
resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as
to the facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost
in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from
time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
    It is its natural manure."
  • a few libertarian quotes
The State, both in its genesis and by its primary intention, is purely anti-social. It is not based on the idea of natural rights, but on the idea that the individual has no rights except those that the State may provisionally grant him. It has always made justice costly and difficult of access, and has invariably held itself above justice and common morality whenever it could advantage itself by so doing.

Before talking about Christians maybe you should educate yourself. Ham??? Really?? Is that what you have to bring to the table today??

    Pun intended.
  • Alexis de Toqueville
I first read Alexis de Toqueville as an undergrad. If you have not read his profound observations and his analyses, or prophesies rather, you are missing out on understanding several links to how the U.S. political system was intended and the consequences of political perversion that we see today. Brilliant!
  • He Got It Right
Wow, I just realized something. 16 years ago, at my government high school, I was taught to have contempt for Alexis de Tocqueville. Now, I understand why.
  • Red Leader
It started long before Bush. I'd say even before FDR, but that was definitely a huge turning point.
  • QUESTION
QUESTION: When, not if, will the next “American Revolution” occur?
  • half right
I'd say you have a 69.5 million person herd ... dragging the other 60 million who do not want to go along ...
  • As long as we understand...
...that this government enlargement take over began with Bush...Obama is the continuation of the nonsense. It is always important as Neal will only mention Obama that the fundamentals of socialism/fascism were laid down in this country by Bush with the bailout bill which opened the flood gates for Obama. If it were volleyball Bush was the set-up Obama is the spike. We must at all costs avoid getting anybody back into power that even remotely resembles Bush or we will simply be on the same path to Fascism. Just the truth. Really we need a Ron Paul type.
  • Sounds about right
Once we have no choice but to depend on the government for our health care, jobs, housing, next meal, etc, imagine how manipulative the government can be by simply threatening to take those handouts away.

This is what scares me about liberals. They are setting up a system, well-intentioned as it may be, which easily converts to totalitarianism in the wrong hands.
  • Alexis de Toqueville
Some other quotes from de Toqueville...

As for me, I am deeply a democrat; this is why I am in no way a socialist. Democracy and socialism cannot go together. You can't have it both ways. [from Notes for a Speech on Socialism, 1848]

Democracy and socialism have nothing in common but one word, equality. But notice the difference: while democracy seeks equality in liberty, socialism seeks equality in restraint and servitude. [from Democracy in America, 1840]
  • no one will listen
no one will listen to the sage advice from long ago. i don't know why, but its the truth. even if their soul is at stake.
all you christian who think gay people are evil, do you eat ham? because your god says not to eat pigs. so you are going to hell. hahahaha
