Obama released the details of his budget yesterday. This disaster is 1,500 pages long. We can't afford the $3.4 trillion price tag. The money simply isn't there. Obama believes that the more money the federal government spends, the greater America becomes. This is the mindset of a man who believes that our greatness comes from government. I don't think I've ever seen anyone so in love with government as Barack Obama.

Oddly enough, the news today isn't that Obama is proposing spending $3.4 trillion. The media is all abuzz over the news that Obama has proposed cutting $17 billion in spending and completely eliminating some programs. Let's get real folks .. this $17 billion is just one-half of one percent of Obama's budget. Government spending has doubled in the past eight years ... and if all you can find to cut is one-half of one percent than you aren't worth a damn as an administrator or CFO.

What's more ... PrezBO's list of proposed budget and program cuts is less than the list put forth by George Bush proposed last year. Bush proposed $34 billion in savings. Now speaking of proposed spending and program cuts ... just because these cuts are proposed doesn't mean that they actually happen. In fact, half of Obama's proposed cuts are the very same ones that Bush tried to get nixed from the budget when he was in office.

Earlier this week I told you of news reports that the Obama White House was using the services of a behavioral psychologist for briefings on the way people react to large dollar figures. Interestingly enough, most people can't differentiate between $17 million and $17 billion. Once the numbers get that high they all bland into a numerical sameness. This means that Obama can propose spending $3.4 trillion and then propose $17 billion in savings and the people think that he is actually doing something incredible! Aren't you comforted by the idea that the president is hiring behavioral psychologists to help him pull the wool over your eyes?

Here is something to keep in mind. Posturing about spending cuts usually means nothing. Presidents generally roll out a long list of spending cuts. It's all for show. The cuts are generally ignored by Congress. So while he may tout the fact that he is proposing a cut of $17 billion, the chances of that actually happening are as slim as my chances with Angelina Jolie - and she's so covered with ink I don't think I'm interested anymore. Let's go with Allison Krause.

Here is something else to keep in mind. Even if Congress adopted these proposed cuts, it would not actually reduce government spending. In fact, Obama's budget is going to increase overall spending. So any savings that Obama may generate from these cuts will be used to pay for more government programs ... the ones that Obama wants to create, like government healthcare.

Amidst these proposed cuts, what gets an increase in federal funding??

The IRS. Yep, Obama wants to double the funds for the IRS to enforce tax laws. There's another $890 million of your tax dollars. Rather than spending more money to enforce a tax system that doesn't work and punishes achievement, how about implementing a new tax system that will allow the taxpayers to keep this money and allow businesses to bring jobs to this country without fear of being punished by the government.

Then there's endless examples of mindless government pork projects. While Obama's budget does seek to cut several education programs, (won't happen) there are a few other "educational" programs that were seen as worthy of maintaining their federal funding. One, for instance, is a $9 million program to promote the history of whaling and trade in Massachusetts.

Here's a list of all the programs that Obama is cutting in this budget. One of these cuts, by the way, is a 9% cut in the unit of the Department of Labor that's in charge of regulating unions. Gotta thank the people that put you in office.

What others are saying

  • this will actually bring smaller government
Although this is counter-intuitive, Obama's massive government plans will actually bring about smaller government sooner than you can imagine.

Since this is based upon growing the parasite (government), rather than the host (private enterprise), the parasite will kill or starve the host quickly. This will lead to an economy of privately owned, but government controlled enterprise...which is, of course, an economic disaster. Since we are borrowing money to make this happen, we are doing so at the whim of our bankers...our beloved Chinese overlords. When they get tired of losing money, they will slowly stop lending money. (They are already doing this.)
Next, we will try to borrow money, with no hope of ever repaying this money. If that doesn't sound like a subprime borrower, I don't know what is.
When no one wants to loan us money, we will have to print money, or reduce the size of government.
Of course, we will have massive unemployment, poverty, and a total collapse of our country, but that is what is coming soon.
Who said that change was good?
  • more noise from washington
i listened to the public address listed above this thread. i guess i'm always curious to hear how obama and his administration are going to convince the people of his successes in washington.

i was surprised to hear him make reference to the inventive ways that companies save money within the free market. if the government were only more like companies that have evolved with the free market, what a better america we would have. i believe he even went on to say how much more efficient america would be.

why the need for a double standard i guess i'll never understand.
  • Brilliant
Never underestimate PBO or his handler Rahn Emanual. They have to propose "cuts" to give the illusion of fulfilling campaign promises. So propose cuts that will NEVER get passed in Congress. Look at the half dozen cuts that directly impact West VA. Think any of them will get past King-of-Pork Byrd? And notice how much (in $) of the cuts are in defense? Dismissing for a moment the ideological intent of these cuts, how many will survive Congressional approval when it means job cuts at Lockheed, Northrup, Boeing, etc?
  • Spend yourself rich!
Why don't we spend ourself rich by writing bad checks? Surely our bankers will always just give us more money, won't they?

That is what this budget is doing. We are writing bad checks to "spend ourself rich."

It doesn't make sense when stupid people do it. It doesn't make sense when stupid governments do it.
  • Here's the list from recent years
This is from Wikipedia, so I don't know how accurate it is. (The first one is apparently wrong; it says 3.6 instead of 3.4)

  • Budget
People don’t get the size of the numbers, so remove some zeros.
We now have $3,400 and $17 dollars.
    ****************

You what to save $3,400 at $17 a week. It will take 3 years and 9 months.
    ****************

You are 20 years old and have a household income $3,400 per month and spend all of it every month. You want to save for retirement so start saving $17 per month. In 45 years you would have saved $9,180 + interest. Now that’s live’n large.
    ****************

You have a household budged of $1,700 per month
You have a project were you what to spend $1,700 in one month
    So here are your choices
-- redirect all your money for the month to the project and pay no rent, utilities, no car payment, and not buy food or gas.
-- or borrow $1,700 dollars and pay it back
-- Hire Bernie Madoff to start an investment fund for you

You decide on #2 and will pay $17 per month. With no interest it would take you 200 months, 16.6 years, to pay back the money. With 10% simple interest you would be paying $153 less than the interest being charged. In other words you’re going further into debt.
    ****************

You have a household income of $1,700 per month and you want to double it to $3,400 per month. You borrow the money, every month, and promise the lender your family will pay $189 a month for the next 1,700 months (141.6 years), for each month you borrow the money. So after 1 year you have put your family in debt for the next 1,699 years.
    ****************

Maybe Bernie Madoff should be Secretary of Treasury.
    ****************
I would definitely impulse buy that $340 TV if the store sent me a $1.70 off coupon.
  • Keep the Math Simple
    $3,400,000,000,000
    $17,000,000,000

It's sort of like buying a $340 television you don't need because you have a coupon for $1.70 off.
  • Spooner/BigAfrica (same dude)
Spooner - your bag o' questions are about as relevant as the point you seem to be straining to make. And yes, the borders need to be slammed shut! But, as long as democrats are building their sheep farm, it will not happen.

The economy runs in cycles (as does the earth's climate), sometimes it's hot sometimes it's cold. The economy would have levelled itself out (as it is on its way to do now), but those currently in power have been looking for an excuse to do exactly what they're doing right now. Each and every one of us in this (once) great country are going to feel Mr Obama's fingers rifling through our wallets, pockets, and 401Ks real soon. Worse yet, our kids, the ones currently being brainwashed by the traitor/communist pop media, are REALLY going to take it in the shorts. No, the war on terror and the war on drugs combined have not, to this date, cost us as much as PBO's 'bailout' already has. Your tirade is incontinent (won't hold water, for you NOLA residents).
  • Allison Krauss in her 30's Nashville hotness, I hope. Not the awkward looking young lady from Indiana of Two Highways or Everytime You Say Goodbye.

The good thing about all this government spending is that the inevitable inflation will make it easy to pay off my mortgage early with the nice low-fixed-rate loans we're all locked locked into now. Too bad there won't be any jobs for the union dumbmasses whose employers will have off-shored whatever is left after the economy truly begins to crumble under the weight of unpayable debt on our currency. The government interventionism in response to the current "crisis" will only exacerbate the problem. The real crisis is still looming, due to terrible monetary and fiscal policy decisions being made this very minute.
  • 17B
The 17 billion isn't going to matter since it's going to go straight to the car companies or banks. Might as well throw a candy bar on the floor and see what fat kid gets it first.
  • foreign policy tied to the problems we see....
There is no possible logical way to look at the spending problems this country has and the pending bankruptcy that is on its way, and ignore the failed American interventionist world police/global welfare foreign policy that actually works to aid terrorist recruitment in the middle east that America is using.

The federal government is indeed as Big Africa said using fear propaganda in the form of the 'war on terror' and so on, in order to expand.

    Here are some questions to think about, and some I have seen here before;

If there were really a war on terror and the Govt were afraid of islamic fascists coming into the country to do harm, why hasn't the border been secured and all illegals escorted out?

If the middle eastern people were building permanent military bases here and trying to change the American way of life by force, would Americans be provoked by that? Would some be provoked to violence?

If yes why do we not expect middle easterners to do so?

If Iraq could have retaliated with brute force on the American mainland would America have invaded? If they could not have retaliated doesn't this defeat the idea that they were a threat?

Why does America keep giving billions to both Israel and middle eastern countries that hate America?

If Iranians had come to America to change the American way of life during the civil war...would both sides have united to fight a common enemy?

If it is true many Islamists want to put the world under shari'a law, then why give them an efficient recruitment tool in American military presence on their soil?

For me the very day we hear that border has been closed and all current illegals expelled is the day we can actually believe a war on terror exists.

What army or airforce does Iran,Pakistan or Iraq have that can deliver a missle into the U.S?

Why does America want other countries to follow the rule of law, when the federal govt here refuses to follow the constitution? What example does that show?

Why was the Koren border better protected with our tax dollars on 9/11 than the Mexican border...when the govt has known about Bin Laden for years?

Why doesn't the FBI's most wanted online site mention 9/11 as one of Bin Laden's crimes?
  • Distance
If you lined up 3.4 trillion 1 dollar bills end to end you would have a line of bills over 321 million miles long. The sun is only 91 million miles away.
You could circle the earth 12891 times.
You could go to the moon and back 672 times.
I would figure out how much surface area that would cover but now I'm to depressed.

Check this out, it will show you what $1 Trillion actually looks like...

  • It's all relative...
When my Father wanted put things in perspective, he would break out the cost of doing business anecdotes. During his days in the Army in WW II, he was assigned to a group that kept up with supplies and personnel. They used crude computers( compared to the vacuum tubes of the late 40's )with punchcards that had to be translated into data. He was flown around because he was one of the few who had been trained to do this.(at the time...). The B-25 he was being flown in had serious mechanical failure. The crew and my Father had to bail out, thus losing a $30,000.00 aircraft. He still marvelled at the idea that he had been given the use of a 30k plane by the government. I asked him why he was upset with me for wrecking the VW he paid $900.00 cash for in 1972. That seemed like a bargain to me. Then I ran out of the house before he could hit me.
  • what is good for the country
This idiocy of blaming Bush or the Republicans and not the symptom of the spending is missing the point. The spending is the problem (yes Bush was part of this). It is time to take people off the teat of Government. We ( I mean all Americans no matter the political affiliation) must change this in order to keep the safety net we have grown accustomed to, that which is Freedom and rule of law. I make not this statement as a political dig nor do I wish to discourage people to continue to help those who are in need. After all true charity is done not with the point of the federal gov'ts gun pointed at your head.
  • SimCity
Barry needs to try the old computer game SimCity so he can understand what happens when taxes get too high in a society. Apparently, he needs some sort of very basic example as being a community organizer just didn't get the job done.
  • Solution - A Lesson in Exponential Growth
Short TV ad like the following that plays every ½ hour during prime time.

    1 thousand = 1,000 = 10 x 10 x 10

    1 million = 1,000,000 = 1000 x 1000 = 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10

    1 billion = 1,000,000,000 = 1000 x 1000 x 1000 = 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10

    1 trillion = 1,000,000,000,000 = 1000 x 1000 x 1000 x 1000 = 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10

    1 quadrillion = 1,000,000,000,000,000 = 1000 x 1000 x 1000 x 1000 x 1000 = 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10

Want more spending and government debt just add 3 zeroes.

Use this shorthand reminder. Just start with 10 and raise it to the power of 3 for 1 thousand and then add 3 for each government increment of spending and debt. 1 trillion is 10 raised to the power of 12 and 1 quadrillion trillion is 10 raised to the power of 15. That will be easier since pretty soon you are going to lose track of the zeroes.
  • Budget Cut?
If people have trouble differentiating millions billions and trillions, here is a handy illustration for geeks:

If Obama's budget was a high end gaming PC costing $3,400 Obama's budget "cut" would mean you'd have to give up your $17 3.5" floppy drive.
  • Budget cuts
They want to cut spending for LORAN. Saves a whopping $35 million a year. Thus killing the only viable technology (eLORAN)to back up GPS for Positioning/Navigation/Timing, which are critical to defense and communications. GPS can be easily jammed. How much security should we sacrifice to cut the budget by 0.001%?
  • @Ellen - Awesome analogy
That is the best analogy I have heard to illustrate the flaw in the socialist reasoning.
  • Ellen!
    AWESOME analogy!

  • $17 billion? Chump change
I read in the Arizona Republic last night that the Dems are crying about even these budget cuts. And Obama's own budget projections have $500-billion-plus deficits for the forseeable future. The Dems are such a sham
  • the road we're on
An economics professor at a local college made a statement that he had never failed a single student before but had once failed an entire class.

That class had insisted that socialism worked and that no one would be poor and no one would be rich, a great equalizer.

The professor then said, "OK, we will have an experiment in this class on socialism. All grades would be averaged and everyone would receive the same grade so no one would fail and no one would receive an A.

After the first test, the grades were averaged and everyone got a B.

The students who studied hard were upset and the students who studied little were happy.

As the second test rolled around, the students who studied little had studied even less and the ones who studied hard decided they wanted a free ride too so they studied little.

The second test average was a D! No one was happy.

When the 3rd test rolled around, the average was an F.

The scores never increased as bickering, blame and name-calling all resulted in hard feelings and no one would study for the benefit of anyone else.

All failed, to their great surprise, and the professor told them that socialism would also ultimately fail because when the reward is great, the effort to succeed is great, but when government takes all the reward away, no one will try or want to succeed.

Could not be any simpler than that!
  • 3.4?
What no one is asking. What was the budget 3 and then 2 years ago? I guess i could google it, but no one seems to have an answer.
  • To Tracey
This is sad but I think you should be very, very careful about expressing your views. If they find out that you "disagree" with their agenda, you may be in danger. BTW, I agree 100% with your assessment.

  • Obama-Budget Cut
DID YOU FORGET WHO THE MAJORITY OF PEOPLE WERE THAT VOTED FOR OBAMA? MOST OF THEM CAME FROM LOW INCOME UNEDUCATED WALKS OF LIFE. FIRST OFF THESE PEOPLE HAVE NO IDEA OR CLUE HOW THE GOVERNMENT OPERATES, THE ONLY THING THEY KNEW WAS A "BLACK MAN" IS RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT. SO, TRUST ME IT WOULDN'T TAKE MUCH TO TRICK THEM. THESE ARE PEOPLE WHO BASE THINGS ON WHAT THE OTHER BROTHER SAID, NOT FACTS OR PRINCIPALS. I FOUND IT SAID THAT THESE PEOPLE WERE AT THE POLES VOTING BASED ON THE COLOR OF A MAN'S SKIN AND NOT PRINCIPALS AND FACTS. I AM AFRO AMERICAN MYSELF AND TRUST ME MY PEOPLE HAVE ISSUES YOU WOULDN'T BELIEVE. WHATS EVEN MORE SAD TO ME IS HOW PEOPLE OF MY RACE THAT ARE IN CERTAIN POSITION SUCH AS GOVERNMENT OR WHATEVER WON'T TRY TO HELP AND EDUCATE THEIR OWN KIND. INSTEAD THEY USE THEM FOR THEIR AGENDA LIKE LAB RATS.
  • Do You Think?
WOW! Duh-duh-duh-do you think Obama has finally realized that we duh, duh, duh, duh - don't have the uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, money for his lunatic spending? Government-education at its' finest, folks!
  • Budget "cuts"? hahahahahahahahahahahaha
PrezBO's budget "cuts" are analogeous to cutting butter with a splinter. Keep working, folks. The deadbeats need gas to fill the tanks of those “free” cars. They have to be able to make it to the KFC to get their “free” Oprah-provided chicken dinners. Then, off to the liquor store, with a stop by the crack-house on the way home.

All on our dime, thanks to Barry.
  • Priorities
BigAfrica - I have to agree with NEAL regarding the Libertarian Party. I believe they are just as nieve as the Democrats when it comes to National defense. I believe we cannot simply turn our backs on people who's only goal in life is to kill us. I would love to bring all our troops and dollars home but I don't see it as being possible. I'm sure there are definately many areas where we can cut military spending and support, but not to the degree perposed by the Libertarian party.

I would like to see cuts in many many other areas before we go gutting the department of defense. Here in Atlanta we got it backwards; we have budget problems so where are the first cuts...Police and Fire. These should be the last areas that cuts are made.
  • answer is simple and possible, but not for Dems
The answer is all too simple, enforce the 10th amendment, cut federal taxes to the point where it’s just enough for the federal government to run to what the constitution allows them to run, then increase state taxes enough for the states to run, this way, the states will not have to take funding from the feds with strings attached and the federal pork will be stopped. This would force states to budget their funding, if taxes are too high, people leave, if taxes are too low, that state will fall into disrepair, if taxes are reasonable people stay and business prospers. PBO and the Dems would hate this because there would be no centralized government to tell the states how to govern. Entitlement states will fail and personal responsibility states will prosper. Okay… it’s a pipe dream, but possible, only if people truly want a government who abides by the constitution.
  • Orders of Magnitude...not just for engineers anymore
The reason (dumb, and therefore most) people don't understand the difference between million, billion and trillion, is probably because they were educated in government schools by teachers who themselves don't understand orders of magnitude...and that's probably by design...

  • the neo-cons destroying America....
All of this is stuff Bush or Mccain would have probably done also. You can't deny that. There's no cash for this. None. What's ironic is that America is heading towards bankruptcy while the South Korean border is nicely protected by our tax dollars, and the middle east keeps taking and asking for billions as well(Pakistan). What is wrong with this picture? I could not help but notice Neal left out the cost of maintaining military presence overseas in countries that are no threat to the U.S. This costs trillions per year, yet Neal says nothing about bringing all troops home from around the world, so America can actually start defending itself. But we Ron Paul republicans have seen this coming for quite some time so I can't say Im surprised.Maybe Obama is trying to destroy the U.S dollar with inflation to once again cause panic and bring on the global dollar, or the new world order the 1st Bush spoke of. Just the same way the Federal government has caused panic with this 'war on terror' nonsense, to give it an excuse to expand and transform America into the Soviet Union. People we have to wake up! The U.S governemnt is now a separate entity that has absolutely nothing to do with America and the constitution. Its like a corporation run by the Federal reserve that is simply seeking to expand by means of promoting fear propoganda. Conservatism (not neo-conservatism) needs to make a comeback. If it can't within the next 2 elections none of us will even recognize this country by 2012. Down with the Bush types, up with the Ron Paul types. That is how you save traditional conservatism in this country and restore the Republic.
  • out of control spending
The number one rule of economics is to make more than you spend. The U.S. can't seem to live within a budget for even 1 year. Is there any reason to believe that a 13 trillion dollar national debt will be paid off IN ADDITION TO the social security/medicare liability? The country is bankrupt- plan accordingly.
  • Obama's Advisors
Hey, all of Obama's Economic Advisors are BEHAVIORAL Economic people with backgrounds in Behavioral Science!!!!
  • The Federal Reserve post from yesterday
HR1207 "Federal Reserve Transparency Act". Do the math people. The Federal Reserve System has been tacking on, what is now $11 Trillion worth of debt and is growing every day. The U.S. Dollar was worth 22 times it's current value before the Federal Reserve Act of 1913 was passed (that is a completely accurate number by the way).

Let me put it into layman's terms for those of you that are government schooled. A meager $10,000 salary at McDonalds (where Gavin Volaire works) would actually be worth $220,000 if the Fed didn't exist. For those that think the salary would only be $300 in 1913 standards aren’t even beginning to think that through. I said WORTH $220,000, not actual dollars. Are you with me so far??? Good....

Now, currently, the amount of money we're paying the Federal Reserve EQUALS the amount of money taken in by income and payroll taxes (another fact, go check it out). By abolishing the debt and restoring coining money back to the American People interest and debt free, we abolish the need for income and payroll taxes.

Once again, to put it into layman's terms, WE ABOLISH THE NEED TO REPLACE INCOME AND PAYROLL TAXES WITH ANY OTHER TAX SYSTEM. Let's ABOLISH taxes, not replace them.

    • Oh, did I forget to mention three very important facts about The Fed that you may not know???

    1. The Federal Reserve is a privately owned company, controlled by a board of bankers, and is not part of the U.S. Government. They are contracted to the U.S. Government to handle all money policies. Check out Lewis v. United States, 1982, in 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.

    2. Since we've established that the Federal Reserve is a private company, they pay NO TAXES. That's right. They're a private corporation and they pay no corporate taxes. Ever wonder how much money they have coming and going out of there????

    3. The Federal Reserve Act of 1913 states that, at any time, we can opt out of the contract with them for only $450 Million. That's $25 per American. That sounds much better than the $36,000 per American that is owed today!!!
  • $17,000,000,000 in same spending
Near as I can tell, most of the President's proposed spending reductions are in the (already) approved discretionary budget - money with which he can do whatever he wishes. Elimated programs will be replaced with new programs that still spend the money. Example: reduce student loan subsidies, but spend all that (maybe more) by expanding Pell Grant programs.
The president should have said, "Only in Washington can we get away with selling the idea of spending the same amount of money as reductions in spending."
    Lemmings are still marching along...
  • Tax enforcement
Spending more money to identify tax evaders makes perfect sense to me. Why should we pay for what they are shirking?
  • Her name is spelled...
Alison Krauss. PS: I'm with you there!
  • Abolish The Federal Reserve
Joyce, you jumped on board!!! I LOVE YOU!!! I love it when someone does the homework and sees what the potential really is. HR1207 "The Federal Reserve Transparency Act" now has 134 Co-Sponsors in the House. Rep. John Linder (the leader of the FairTax effort) signed on as a Co-Sponsor yesterday and acknowledges that even though the FairTax is okay, abolishing the Fed is even better!!! Read up on it folks. I'm going to copy and paste my rant from late yesterday in this thread so you can get a taste of true liberty.
  • What Cut!
$3.4 trillion is more than $3.1 trillion. Changing how you slice the pie isn't cutting the budget.
  • BUdget et al
PBO is a fraud, therefore, his budget is as well. The sheeple will continue to launch hugs and kisses at our "leader" over the next 8 years and we will all be the worse for it.

That being said, you have impeccable taste in women...Allison Krause is smoking hot!
  • What change?
The new Emperor's clothes are the same as the old one.

Remind me please Lefties, exactly how is Obama different than Bush?

At least we stood on your side, screaming bloody murder about the spending, when Bush was President.

Seems to be a one way street though.
  • AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

We are going down the road at light speed. This is getting to the point where my wife and I almost regret having another child.

How sad that we are trading liberty for a soft tyranny.
  • why?
Obama is either purposely attempting to destroy America or he's really that stupid. It might be a combo deal.
  • :(
I hope Obama is ready to take on China and Russia at the same time. What happens when the US can no longer get China to buy our debt? When will we answer for this?
  • Find something better
If there is a better budget out there, then someone should propose it. Otherwise, you cannot complain if nobody is bringing together a whole new budget. Complaining about a few different areas is as pointless as Republicans complaining about abortions
  • Yup
"spending more money to enforce a tax system that doesn't work and punishes achievement"

And the blacks will love him for it and cheer the move all the way.
"Gotta get me summa dat money!"
  • HR1207
