Name: Marlene Cooksey

City: Tucson

Subject: food stamps

How do you sleep at night? I thought I had heard every right-wing selfish utterance on talk radio, but you, sir, have taken the prize. A separate line for food stamp recipients, seriously? People feeding their children via food stamps gets on your nerves? Seriously? I had to use food stamps when my twins were young or they would have gone hungry. And, let me tell you that I am forever grateful to live in a country where the less fortunate are given a helping hand.

My two daughters are now productive members of this society; one a successful attorney (Pell grants and student loans)and the other a para-legal with two beautiful children - no thanks to you and your kind.

So, sleep well at night, sir, and don't give one minute's thought to those who are less fortunate than you. And, oh yes, there should be separate lines in the supermarket - one for heartless, ignorant morons and the other lines for us good Americans.

Yup ... more of that "less fortunate" nonsense. If you work hard, don't have kids until you can afford to raise them, go the extra mile ... and end up a success, you were just "fortunate." It's all about luck. If, on the other hand, you have kids you can't afford and have to use the government as an instrument of plunder in order to feed them .. it's all because you were "less fortunate," or, to use the translation, just "unlucky."

I wonder why Marlene Cooksey never mention's the twins father?

What others are saying

  • 'less fortunate'
I agree with you, but we all have made bad decisions. I think the words 'less fortunate' are used a lot primarily for the lack of other words to use. It is not really appropriate to use 'loser' or whatever, maybe we should come up with an alternative for those words that is more meaningful and correct.
  • look her up
she's an administrative assistant at the University of Arizona, still a government leach, what else do you expect?
  • Food Stamps
    Hey Marlene,

Neal just suggested you be required to form a separate line, identifying you as one who lives off the government teat. If the shame of being known as one who lives of the fruits of my labor motivates you to accept responsibility for yourself, then your plight may end all the sooner. Good luck, hope it all works out for you and yours, now get your hand off my billfold!
  • Welfare
The way I see it, that fact that someone needs help or assistance is not the issue. The real problem is the Govt. taking, not asking for, money from those who earn and give it to those who don't. Charity is a great thing and that is where those in need, for whatever reason, should be seeking help. Imagine how much the churches or other non-profit org. would have to help out, if it weren't for the high tax rates we already pay.

The govt. has made it so easy for people to receive hand outs that it has become a "right". If these people would have to go to their neighbors, churches or other non-profits, to seek help, they would work a little harder at keeping a job (Just Over Broke) and would refuse, due to embarassment or shame to ask for hand outs.

Let me keep my money and let me decide if you deserve any of it. Next time ask me if I will give you some of my hard EARNED greenbacks. And a THANK YOU every once in a while would be great.
  • write2stewart@gmail.com
Why doesn't she mention the father? Oh...you mean the "baby-daddy"...

Wonder if her kids are gator-grads...if so, I'd like to issue the gradulation proclamation...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x5tXMLI-OsI
  • Ted:
It sounds like you used the system as it was intended to be used. I doubt anybody here would condemn you for that...

but I do have one question for you (and Josh): Did you appeal to a family member, a neighbor, your church or some other private charitable organization brfore you went to the government?
  • So fat you're starving
Have you ever seen a thin person on food stamps? The pieces of garbage eat so poorly that they have to have a separate program so their welfare checks (kids) have eggs, milk, cereal etc. to eat. They shouldn't get food stamps but rather a bag of food each week.
  • Adding note to Cashier's Note
I am ex-cashier of 4 years. I saw many stories of people misusing it. One lady bought Birthday Party Supplies, Steaks, alcoholic mixers and a full size decorated cake (Originally a total of 300+). Then she complained about the cake to store manager (nothing wrong with it to me) The food stamp person got the cake for free, too. Scamming on top of scamming.
Another bought $200 in Ribeye steaks with all those grill out items to go with it.
My list can go on, too. The stories happen more than people think. You live it everyday as a grocery cashier.
  • Food Stamps
I work as a cashier in a grocery store, and I will have to agree with Neil on this one, only I would even take it one step further. I would have to go as far as to say there should be a separate store for these people to get their crap from.
In my time working at this store I have had the displeasure of seeing how some of these folks act, and how some of the people who are also at the store view the people on food stamps.
Once there was a couple who came in, with a card that was demagnetized, and they had not used it in 6 months. The balance on their card was so huge that the state said that if they didn’t use the money they would drain the balance and take them off the list of recipients. So, they got the ideal to take 4 of their friends to go shopping for groceries on the government’s dime. 4 shopping carts, 2 system restarts, and just over 1000$ latter they left with their groceries and groceries for their friends.
Another time a couple was asking about the purchase of lobster with their food stamps…
And finally a family who bought stuff with food stamps only to have it carried out to their brand spanking new lexus SUV.
And don’t even get me started with those people who receive WIC subsidies.
  • Ahhhhhhh... the silly.
They are the worse when they go through the express line with The WIC checks. Yep, they got each item to check off. One by one.. as I worked for my money. So my time is precious. To me, they are worse than the check writing fools of 2009. I love you Mr. Neal Boortz! Muah!
  • Are You Kiddin' me?
My mother raised four of us in a single-wide trailer, after we lost the farm, after my parents marriage imploded, after my dad lost his part time job working in a slaughterhouse.
People like this woman make me ill, we were P.O.O.R. and my mother still didn't get on welfare, we all got JOBS when we were big enough to work. I would not be who am today if it weren't for my folks. What would I be if GOVERNMENT had stepped in?
Boortz- you're right! I feel "fortunate" to have had good hard working parents, thank god I was never unfortunate!
  • How ignorant
Lawyers and paralegals don't produce diddly. They suck off those that do. Kinda like Marlene. (Isn't Neal a lawyer?)
  • Help you get off of
The point of Food Stamps, and Welfare in general, is that you strive to better yourself and get off of it when you can. True, there are those who's circumstances prevent that. There are those who accept help with humility and do not accept it when able. Then there are those who abuse the system and spend there time figuring out how to maximize time staying below line and on welfare. The abuse of the system is where the complaints are aimed.
I am ashamed to say that when my son was born I accepted welfare to help pay for medical costs (I made $40 too much a month to get WIC or Food Stamps, go figure). He had to be evaluated every month in order to receive benefits. 6 months later, I got a job with my current employer and no longer met the requirements to receive welfare. I gladly informed the government of this and stopped bringing my son for medical evaluations. I was harassed by the government for over a year threatening the cutoff of my benefits! After the 4th explanation of why I didn't need it anymore, they stopped.
Once the government has its hooks in you they don't want you to take them out. Sure am glad my family is off welfare and proud I used the system as it is meant to be used (even though I am shamed I had to have help in the first place).
  • Food Stamps can help
There are always exceptions but this woman sounds like she is really into what she can get instead of earning.

My grandsons lost their dad December 5th 2008. They came to live with me and will be with me for some time to come. They are teenagers so you know they eat a lot! I did apply for Food Stamps a few months ago and next month will be getting off of them. The boys will be getting their dad's Social Security money and we won't need them between that and what I earn working two jobs. I am grateful to have had them as my income alone wouldn't have covered buying food for 3. I'm grateful to be getting off of them too but it's served to show my boys that a little is a hand up and not a hand out for long term.

Oh and Neal, Marlene Cooksey didn't mention a husband or a son-in-law either.
  • Am I to blame?
I got a college education through sports and grades. I'm 36 and have had only 3 jobs since I graduated. About a year ago, the company I worked for went belly up. For 3 months I desperately sought work, to no avail.I sold my home, I sold my car and paid off all of my bills.

I continued looking for work. Nothing. So, I swallowed my pride and signed up for Food Stamps as I had no money left and trying to feed 3 children, myself and my wife wasn't happening with my unemployment.

I got the stamps, and used them for 3 months. One week before the 3 month period was up, I landed a fantastic job (career). I got my first paycheck, and never used the remaining amount on the food stamp card.

Am I at fault here? Am I the type in which everyone here is speaking about in such a negative manner?

I'm glad we have this option when things get bad. The people that exploit it are the ones that need to be punished.

But don't bash all of us. Some of us actually needed help. I sapped my entire retirement and had no where else to turn (no, i wasn't about to run up credit cards with no job).
  • food stamps
For once, I'm disagreeing with the Talkmaster.

Neal, you condemn those that need food stamps for it seems to be WHATEVER reason. People get sick, and insurance doesn't cover everything. We lose jobs and as a result fall behind. Should people STAY on food stamps just because? oh hell no. However, don't condemn those that need a little temporary relief. That small amount of relief CAN be used to turn what may have been the next homeless "less fortunate" person that lost her husband due to circumstances beyond her control into a success story. Just remember when you point the finger that you have three pointing back at you.
  • No Thanks
With no thanks to you and your kind??

Really! Who does she think paid the taxes that funded the food stamps for her and her kids? It certainly wasn't the poor, poor, pitiful poor!
  • let me guess
this is actually obamas illegitimate twin sister..
  • Food Stamps
    The term is paralegal, not
"para-legal." I am a paralegal. I have a college degree. I worked hard to get my degree and my paralegal certification, without hand outs. My mother never used food stamps or any type of welfare. She worked hard, also raised two daughters, and apparently helped raise yours. I'm sorry for your daughters. Oh, and if you happen to read this, you're welcome!
  • let's let her rot
she don't deserve our tax dollars. we've enough taxes without her adding her. why, if we did away the welfare offices, we could give so much more aid to pakistan, egypt, NATO.

there is no way we could give aid to someone within our own borders. a citizen? go to the back of the line, citizen, we've got some foreigners to give our money too.
  • The less fortunate by choice.....
Just another spoke in the wheel of socialism.
  • Marlene is an ungrateful dolt
Ahh..Copyleft with a typical "I'm smarter than you" lib comment.

What you fail to realize, my friend, is that this woman's letter proves how ignorant she is about just who happens to pay for all those food stamps she received. That is what Neal was trying to highlight. She didn't "nail" Neal at all. I give her credit for turning her kids into productive members of society who won't be burdens on our backs, but instead of showing a little friggin gratitude, she calls out the very people whose tax money kept her and her kids from starving to death at one point.

Welfare lovers degrade the rich and even the not-rich-but productive members of society, yet fail to realize that it is us who keeps bread on their table. And do we ever get a "thank you"? No, we get demonized instead for having a job, paying taxes, and being responsible. And we have to carry others on our backs. We can't all be dependent on others, because if we develop into a society run on that model, we all die.
  • Marlene's got your number
She was on government assistance; she used it to build a good life for herself and her family, and now they're all productive, taxpaying members of society.

In other words, Marlene's the perfect "success story" for poverty programs! No wonder Neal hates her so much and calls for everyone to spit on her. She represents the good that social spending can accomplish. Can't have THAT, can we?

She's nailed you, Neal. Not a thing you can do about it except whine that maybe somewhere, some OTHER welfare recipients are cheating the system and stealing your money--which I'm sure you would have cheerfully contributed at your local church to help support the Cookseys if not for that darn ol' government.

    (snicker)
  • Your Welcome
I always say - Your Welcome to one of these burdens on society who whips out the Food Stamp card in front of me at the grocery store. I of course get a HUH? in response. I say that I just paid for your groceries so your welcome. They usually inform me that I did not pay for their groceries the government did, at which point I walk away shaking my head knowing I am wasting my time.
  • welfare
During the Depression, it was called relief, and most folks avoided it. At some point, the name was changed to welfare and it was not considered charity anymore. Pride kept people off relief, but now pride is no longer in the equation. Now, it's the government helping everybody. See, some people have too much money and need help distributing it. Other people have too many wants and need help paying. So, the government jumps in to help both groups.
  • Food Stamp Shame
I think that food stamps and TEMPORARY government assistance is not such a bad thing. I have many friends that benefited from it for a short time in their life.

BUT: any government assistance should be a humiliating thing. I think people should be embarrassed about it and pay it back once they're off it. Government "charity" only leads to abuse. Recipients should feel humiliated to accept the help. That way, only those that actually NEED it will apply.

We've created a new Bill of Rights: I have the right to never ever feel bad about anything ever.
  • Food Stamps
Helping someone who has a legitimate need is one thing. Abusing the system just irks me. One thing always irritated me when I was in line behind people with Food Stamps. They always divided their purchase in two. Food went first and was paid with Stamps. Beer, wine, cigarettes, and magazines came second and were paid in cash, and I'm not talking small bills either? Anyone else see a problem with this?
  • Welfare
Marlene must love her welfare. Her daughter paid part of her education with Pell Grants? This is a welfare payment for secondary education. People don't earn Pell Grants because of anything they've accomplished in their life.

This woman claims her children would have gone hungry without food stamps? So Marlene is such a lousy parent that she wouldn't have found something in her life to sacrifice in order to feed her children? Gee Marlene, a simple thank you would have sufficed.
  • Making Lemonade out of Lemons
Maybe the father died and didn’t have a life insurance policy. Maybe he left her and didn’t pay child support. He could have become sick or disabled and was unable to support his family. There are a number of other possibilities.

So, I guess the question is that of being “fortunate” or “less fortunate.” So does luck have anything to do with being successful or not. Working hard and making good decisions will get you moving in the right direction, but what if along the way you develop a brain tumor … get into an auto accident and become disabled or partially disabled … lose your job because a bunch of morons in DC with less than 1/10 of an ounce of knowledge in economics pass laws that damage our economy … etc. Call it what you want, but sometimes things happen that are unforeseeable and beyond our control.

Regardless of the circumstances, unlucky or otherwise, it sounds like she raised two children to become successful, independent adults. Kudos to Marlene.
  • Cooksey an ingrate
Cooksey states, "... no thanks to you and your kind." Apparently she's forgotten that these handouts are paid for by people like you and your kind. But even though we're paying for them we have no right to complain.
  • Food Lines
so if I stand in the "heartless, ignorant moron" line does that mean I can check out faster?
  • Food Stamps
Did you catch her line "no thanks to you and your kind." where the hell does she think the money came from to supply the food stamps and grants. She should be thanking you Neal. No evil rich, no food stamps.
I went to college funded my school loans. After college.. marriage.. then children. I am now a stay at home mom with a school loan. But because of my education and experience I can do some occasional consulting making good money.
  • Good Kick In The Hindside
This lady needs a good kick in the HINDSIDE. Just like out Gov Schools and teachers unions. It's time we take our country back from these false-faced hobgoblins who use practical politics to keep the populace alarmed
  • Dead beat Dads!
Any truth to the rumour that you were a dead-beat dad after flunking out of college?
  • Food Stamps
At least Marlene uses spell check before sending an angry email!!
  • No thanks to people like you
That's the problem, Marlene, you don't thank the tax paying people like us who's hard earned tax dollar fed, clothed and educated your daughters. Just a little bit of gratitude from people like Marlene who have children then expect others to pay the bill would make writing that big IRS check April 15 a little more palatable!
  • The death of shame
The fear of shame used to be an effective tool by which people would temper their more base instincts, such as the participation in promiscuous sex and begging. It's obvious that Ms. Cooksey has either lost her sense of shame or never had it to begin with.
  • Bitter
She's just bitter becuase Hilary lost the campaign. At least she is "giving back" some of that foodstamp money through political donations.
    http://fundrace.huffingtonpost.com/neighbors.php?type=name&lname=Cooksey&fname=Marlene
  • "no thanks to you and your kind" -- I wonder just who she thinks provided the tax money for her? It didn't come other people on food stamps....
  • Food Stamps
I have known many who have had children before they could afford them. In almost every case their advice is to have as many children as you want because God will provide. Now, some were too proud to take gov't money but in many cases it was/is the tax payer who provides, with the government being the strong arm in the middle of the transaction. If God is the one taking money from my paycheck every month, does that mean he lives in DC and works for the IRS? Or is it our politicians who have a God complex?
  • Food Stamps and Mexicans
I just get tired of waiting in line behind a family at Walmart with no English. They then whip out their Lone Star Card (Texas Food Stamps) and buy a crap load of food because of a litter of anchor babies. The scarier thing than that is to see the mom pregnant again. Then they load up in a new truck with "Sanchez" or some other name on the rear window and drive off. I think I'm going to become an illegal immigrant. I won't have to have a driver's license, or pay rent, or pay car or home insurance, or pay for my medical care, and I can get a Lone Star card for food. Not only that, I can get a credit card with a $10,000 balance and a huge house I can't afford from major American banks...no questions asked!
I don't even have to pay income taxes since I'm not on paper. I've seen it done, and I"ve talked to people who do it and laugh about it...all the way to the bank on YOUR tax money. I'm learning Spanish right now as a matter of fact, so I can act like I can't "speak Englis."
  • Typical Neal
Yes, Neal-we know that fortune never played a part in your massive success. Everything you have you got only because of one person-you. Keep believing that, Neal. Because if you dared to look back on your life you might see where things could have gone wrong for you. And if they had, you might have needed a little help. And you would have taken that help wherever you could find it-even from the government.
  • Marlene
Wasn't that one of her girls on the spring break video?
  • Marlene Cooksey
It is quite evident that the reason Ms Cooksey doesnt mention the father is because she conceived during a one night stand. The little hussey.
  • Food Stamps
If a person uses food stams or a vision card as a stop gap, a safety net vs. using them as a hammock, there is a big difference. I would like to see a test of permanence on the benefit. No reason that a person or a family should use this benefit for years and years.
  • Speaking of Hate Mail
Where's the Hate Mail Template? I got a kick out of those things.

BTW, my word verification is "WBMRS" - which, if I recall correctly, was how...

    ahh, never mind.
