WORKING ON A FAIRTAX IDEA

Actually ... it's an illustrated book. All I need is an illustrator.

Here's the idea. The book features a typical American family. This family has never known anything other than the FairTax. The breadwinner has always received his entire paycheck every payday. There has never been a dime withheld for income taxes, Medicare taxes or Social Security taxes. This family has never paid a penny in dividend taxes or capital gains taxes. They've never had to pay taxes on the interest they earn in their savings accounts or the profits they earn from their investments. They've never filed a federal tax return. In fact, they've never filled out a federal tax form. What's more, they have never had to worry about how much death tax the government was going to take when the breadwinner went tango uniform. The only time this family has ever had to pay a dime in taxes is when they purchased some item or service at the retail level.

Now ... along comes a politician with a wonderful new idea. He wants to change the tax system. He's trying to convince this family that they would be much happier of the federal government would tax 35% of everything they earn instead of just 23% of everything they spend. He is trying to convince them to support a new tax system whereby the government would take the taxes straight out of their paychecks. They would also have to pay separate taxes for Social Security and Medicare. In addition, they would pay taxes on any stock dividends they earn, as well as the interest from their savings accounts. Where they once had no tax compliance costs, they would now have to hire accounts to figure out their taxes for them. Where they once had no federal forms to fill out, they would now have to spend an average of 55 hours a year on federal tax forms. And ... to top it all off ... when they die the federal government would step in and take about 45% of everything that is left.

The illustrated book would show the shock, derision and outright disbelief that this family would show as this political hack tried to sell them on the very tax system so many of us suffer under today.

  • NonProfit Charity to Draw Fair Tax Comic Book
Fantastic idea. It will be a great way to break it down for those brought up in Gov't Schools.

I represent www.GIRAFNetWork.org. A 501(c)3 Non-Profit Charity, located here in GA. We'd love to get this into the works for you. We have writers, comic book writers, illustrators; all of who would love to get together to bring this to the people. We can have writers to turn your plot into a script, have it fitted into a comic/illustrated format; then drawn out, inked and prepped for print. All within the same company.

  • How about a different way of selling the Fair Tax?
    Neal-

I support the Fair Tax, but I think that you and other high-profile supporters are missing out on a great angle to "sell" it to taxpayers who are undecided on the matter.

Instead of focusing on the math (which plenty of folks either don't understand or don't believe) and the thought that you'll pay less in taxes (which you won't, because Washington needs the same amount of revenue irregardless of the taxation method), I suggest you push the fairness thought more. The FT would require that nearly everyone would pay at least some tax and would capture the tax on the underground economy that currently escapes taxation.

    Keep up the good work.
  • YOUTUBE IT
I agree that this message needs to be spread, but probably not through a book. The people who need to be convinced aren't the same ones who will take the time to read a book. What we need is a video that is engaging, informative, and humorous so that it can be emailed. Now is the time to do it, also because taxes are on everyone's mind.
  • Iluustrator?
Check out http://www.redplanetcartoons.com/ for an excellent illustrator who is obviously on-board with the FairTax.

And what about the FairVote? The voting system where each person gets one vote for every dollar they pay in taxes?
  • illustrator
You should seek out Mark Bagley. He draws for DC Comics and must have some ties to Atlanta because local landmarks always end up in his books. You have also been mentioned by name in some of his previous work.
  • Awesome Idea!
Neal, these would be PERFECT! If you had pictures and diagrams showing the current tax system and then the FairTax it would go a huge distance in explaining why FairTax is what the country both wants and needs.
  • Slight correction
Actually, this "typical American family" is making more than 7 times the average family income.
  • A typical american family?
I'm curious how this is supposed to be a typical family when its tax rates indicate its income is more than 5 times the average household income and it has more than 3.5 million dollars in assets. That's much more than 10 times average household assets and it would actually have to be much much more than $3.5 million if the government is actually taking about 45%, because there are no estate taxes before that threshold.

Not to mention that most don't need an accountant.

And that's all with only one person working. Wow.

I'd like a book that shows an actually average family being told they will have much more of their income taxed than someone making millions, at the same rate (inherent in a sales tax, because the middle class spend more of their income than the rich), but it's okay because it's voluntary in that if the family somehow does not buy anything they won't pay taxes. Plus they get a minimal government check that somehow is supposed to cover their taxes on necessities, regardless of how much their necessities may cost.

And the whole tax system is based off of a smoke and mirrors approach to examining the tax burden that doesn't work at all in a larger context, as well as false ideas of progressivity and choice.

If we want the book to be realistic, make it about Republicans and after telling them about this "FairTax" to blank stares the politician can promise to mess with some minority group (ban gay marriage, harass immigrants, or something) and get their glowing approval.
  • Fair Tax Illustration
Hey, Neal, as long as you are planning on illustrating this idea, why not just go ahead and make a movie out of it?
  • include in the "typical American family"
I think it would be a good idea to mention that this typical American family gets a check each month from the government.

Any time we are going to bring up the Fair Tax to someone unfamiliar with it, I think we should ask them FIRST if they would like a check each month from the government. The idea of free money will likely get their attention and have them asking for more information.
  • nice..
but i doubt anybody could relate to it without seeing the movie first.
  • Make it a contest
Neil!!! You should make this into a contest and have people submit their idea of the manuscript. :) Just a thought. Thanks for all you do. Appreciate it big time.
  • GO FOR IT.
  • watch out for the liberals
Watch out. The liberals will sell it as 'we will give you a 23% cut in the price of what you own and will only add income taxes on the rich. You will still take home your entire paycheck and pay less at the store. What a deal'. Remember, 50% of all americans dont pay income taxes already, so they wont mind it being reinstated. But, take away their rebate check and then things may be different.
  • Fair Tax Story Book
Great idea!!!! Keep it simple so even a child will understand because those with that mentality won't.
  • illustrator
What about having it from the points of view of the kids in the family? I mean, if little kids can figure it out... just a thought
  • Illustrator Suggestion
Could always check with Chris Muir who does the "Day by Day" Cartoon. He's mentioned Neal once or twice in the strip and is running a Tax arc at the moment too.

  • Great point, Chuck!
That's a great point, Chuck, because we know congress doesn't actually READ anything.

"The length of this document defends it well against the risk of it being read." -- Winston Churchill
  • Fairtax Illustraded Book
I like the idea but why not tell the stories of two families using both tax systems concurrently to demonstrate and illustrate the diiferences?
  • FairTax - Illustrated
Perhaps this company could help. http://commoncraft.com/show
    Technical information straight forward.
  • Whaddayathink?
Good, but you forgot something. Have them go into a store with a busload of foreign tourists (or undocumented workers) and have them think how silly it is that they are buying goods tax free while the citizen is not.
  • Illustrated FairTax Book
Neal----Fantastic idea! The more basic and simple you can make it, the more people will sign onto it. Why, with pictures and illustrations, some members of congress might actually understand it!
  • FairTax
Another excellent idea would be to have FairTax "floats" in 4th of July parades all of the country.
  • Sounds nice, but-
Don't make the "bad guy" a straw-man. Work with someone else (Clark Howard sounds like a good pick) who /doesn't/ support FairTax to get him to write the opposing view. Don't just make the bad-guy say "I want to take your money!", make him explain it in terms of "I'm going to reduce the amount you pay for things by 23%", or give justifications, like "I'm going to make the real cost of taxes more visible to you by making it separate, instead of hiding it in the price of apples and cars"

Seriously, get help. You need more than an illustrator.
  • Illustrated Fair Tax book
I'm on board and I'm an artist. Please look at my work and let me know if it is a style that you would want for your book. I have a BFA in Illustration from SCAD, but am a Libertarian. Somehow, I survived art school.
I'd love to work on the project, please let me know what you think.

  • Great idea!
    Check out http://www.bigheadpress.com/
    Especially "The Probability Broach" and
    "Roswell, Texas". Both illustrated by
Scott Bieser. Big Head Press may even been
willing to publish it for you. Good Luck!
  • National Endowment for the Arts
This could be your ticket to you piece of the stimulus! Just promise to use federally subsidized artists and print the book on recyled paper with organic ink. You'll be creating 'green' jobs and saving the world from another exhibit of animal feces.
  • Illustrator
Contact either David Boyd, Sr. or David Boyd, Jr. in Newnan, GA. They are syndicated political cartoonists and Boyd, Sr. has illustrated most of Foxworthy's books, Grizzard books, and his own, "Cooking With Lard." They are like-minded advocates of The Fair Tax. You are welcome.
  • A picture book for adults
I would send it to all my democrats, er, relatives.
  • Great idea!
I think it's a good "kids" version of the Fair Tax book. We've got all sorts of "kids" political books out there, one more on a subject we WANT our kids to learn would be nice!
  • Change the name from FairTax to Consumption Tax
Change the name from FairTax to Consumption Tax. Otherwise, it will never pass due to FairTax's connotation of disdain of class struggle. People hate and envy richer people and that is a too great force to underestimate.
  • Illustrated Book Idea..
Neil, that is a fantastic idea...you could have two versions of it....one for children and one for liberals...the one for liberals would need to have less words and more pictures and title it something like Heather has Two Mommies who have Two Complete Paychecks....

btw you can find an illustrator at elance, scriptlance or anyone of half dozen other freelance sites...
  • good idea but...
how about putting it in comicbook form like the old "Classic Comics" of the 60's? Classic literature was put in comicbook formatand Many kids who would have never known any of the classic writers got to introduced to them thru Classic comics. Aim for the young minds, its what the left does very well.
  • Good idea but...
You have to keep it realistic and relevant to a TYPICAL American family. I'm a huge supporter of the Fair Tax, but you'll not get it passed by using the highest tax brackets as examples, that only makes you appear dishonest (or poor at marketing to real folks). You'll need to change the income tax from 35% to 25%, which is the bracket for most upper-middle class earners. You'll also want to drop mention of the death tax, since it only affects money in excess of $3.5 Million, and most typical American families don't have that kind of wealth to pass on, and wouldn't be affected by the death tax. Good idea, but just keep it realistic and relevant to middle class, not the top 2% of earners.
  • Multi-media
    The book is ok...

    Three words:
    Animated. Short. Film.

I even know an 3D artist that might be willing to help *cough, cough*
  • This must be on YouTube
This absolutely needs to be produced in video form in order to be spread virally on the internet. The millions of "dumb masses" out there -- the ones that really need to see this -- are the least likely read, let alone buy, a book.
  • Illustrated book
I think it's a great idea. Listen, the only way to get the masses to understand this concept is to show them what they are missing.
Right now they think they are getting a good deal. Like you said, they don't realize how much money they've spent on taxes.
So "dumb" the concept down for the masses.
Seriously, this is a good idea. It will be an eye opener.
    I hope you do it.
  • Read this to understand economics
http://home.earthlink.net/~schiffeconomics/index.htm is awesome! Took me little while to read it, but it was very entertaining, comical, and yet true to the point of showing where the real have's and havenot's are.
  • Sounds good.
I'd like to discourage you from doing this because my wife and I are working on something like this already. That said, we definitely need a book like this for children as well as 30-40% of the adult public.
I have lost count of how many FairTax books I have purchased, just to give them away to people who will probably never even get past the first chapter.
It would be nice to have something basic to hand out to people.
  • Great idea!
Neal... the greatest challenge facing any idea, good or bad, is convincing the masses that they should go along with. And the first step in the convincing process is communicating it effectively. And to do that we have to make addressing our audience and picking the most popular media the top priorities. What do we have? Short-attention-span, entitleist sheeple & TV/Internet. So what we need is short, scannable, easy examples & illustrations served up via "cool" websites like YouTube, Twitter, etc. Easy (cheap) access and easy digestion are the keys. The liberals have been masters of this game for decades, as is evident in what this country has become. You're on the right track!
  • Its a youtube generation
Who reads books today (OK, I've read both of Uncle Neal's FairTax books). Given the attention span of your average voter, you might be able to get them to read a comic book, but watching a video is more likely as long as it is funny too.

People just want to be entertained, learning something in the process is by accident.
  • Children's Book
We need a FairTax children's book...something as an antidote to the Rainbow Commufish.

BTW: My CAPTCHA ended in 4Q and I'm offended.
  • Fair Tax Illustrated
A Fair Tax Picture book would be perfect for those people who can read only at the second grade level, which would ironically account for at least half of the people who voted for Barack Obama.
  • Surprise! I like the Fair Tax idea
You know what? I really like the Fair Tax idea; I even bought Boortz's book on it (albeit a slightly water-damaged one marked down to $3.99).

Just wanted to let you know.

Enjoy your tea parties. Peace out!
  • Constitutional Convention Time
Its time for the states to Call a Constitutional Convention, reaffirm the 10th Amendment, strip down the size of the Federal government, and pass the Fair Tax.
  • Illustrated Tax Book
Excellent idea. Design the book in 3 levels, one to be used as a "childrens book - start them young, another for the average citizen and the third with prettier pictures and less print for the dumb asses ...... ahh, masses!
  • LOVE IT!!!
GREAT IDEA. It needs to be less than 25 pages, paperback and easy to hand out.....
    GO FOR IT!
  • I like it!
It's amazing how the simpliest ideas can sometimes be the best. The evil rich employer is paying these taxes also, maybe the breadwinner gets laid off at some point too?
  • I am a fair tax supporter but after reading that I'm a bit confused. How do you make up for the loss of 8% of taxes when you drop from the 35% of all income to 23% of purchases. Sorry, I havent gotten around to the books. Any help anyone?
  • Good idea - but preaching to the choir
The people that would need to read this book the most are the least likely to even consider purchasing it. They'd pass it by to get to the latest copy of US, People or SI.
  • its ok
but i think showing the hassle the family goes through with our current tax system then show the difference if the Fairtax was passed would be better for people to understand better.
  • The Next FairTax Book - -
-- will be the next Best Seller from Neal Boortz !!
    Go For It !!!
The summary you have written in today's column is the essence of the lunacy of the existing tax code, and how ludicrous it would be to try to implement that system today.

BTW - Dayton Ohio has 7000 RSVP's for tinight's rally. It is at 6PM to allow people to work all day (and pay taxes) before attending the tax-protest rally!
  • Comic Book
Great idea Neal but expand it to a town. Have the politican hold a town hall meeting with responses from eveyone - the banker, day care worker, car salesman, businessman, teacher, janitor, teen age stock boy, etc. Why limit it to just one family.
    Kevin

  • Illustrator
Neal, a thought for a local artist for your book idea....

    http://www.johncoxart.com/

He was/is 1/2 the duo of Cox and Forkum.
  • FairTax Illustrated
Google "readers digest road to serfdom". You should find a PDF version of a Readers' Digest Condensed Version of Hayek's Road To Serfdom (at IEA.org.uk), the end of which has an "The Road To Serfdom in Cartoons". It makes for a great summary.
  • FairTax Book Idea
In addition to an illustrated book, you might want to create a pop-up version for the government educated amongst us.
  • A book to tell people that the government is evil is just negativity with no real purpose but to keep people agitated. If you think the government is the enemy then that means it must be defeated. It lacks creativity and will only be preaching to the choir. You can stir folks up and upset them but you would be smarter to get someone young and creative to sell the fair tax message...like an animated video on utube that can make people feel as if the government needs our help to be competent. all these people you stir up everyday are buying the gun stores out. get your jollies and get your ratings telling people government is the enemy. after all we're the dumb masses edumacated in govt schools. first you ridicule your audience for being stupid and then you upset them. it isn't what you are complaining about isn't valid, it is the hysteria and the lack of perspective and unwillingness to concede that your 'enemy' has a brain and is worthy of general respect. you are just a bully. what a waste of a good brain and too bad for the fair tax. i love it and think us poor people would jump on it if sold in a more positve way. however, that would mean that you would have to admit an error and that's not gonna happen. no need to listen to your bluster today on tax day; i'll download a book instead.
  • I agree!
If the masses won't come to Mohamed, then Mohamed must go to the masses. A picture book, simple, with pretty pictures, is the perfect thing!
  • Fair Tax Illustrator
A while back you linked to Big Head Press for one of their alternate history stories. I still visit their site regularly. They may be a good place to go for this idea, since they seem to enjoy writing graphic novels with similar themes.
  • Great Idea.....
We're all about visuals.....too bad I can't draw anything other than a draft beer.
  • Book
You could actually have the current tax structure forced onto this family by the government and depict in great detail the loss of many liberties and freedoms they had previously lived with under the Fair Tax. This could easily happen under an administration similar to the current one.
  • FairTax
    Hey Neil

Have you seen "Our Troubling Tax System," that video put out by the Cato Institute? You books are prominently displayed. See it here:

    http://theotherathens.blogspot.com/2009/04/our-troubling-tax-system.html
  • Yes.
That is a great idea. I have heard you tell the same story on the air more than once, and I think it would be a great addition to any home library, especially as a way of teaching the concept to kids (though when I was a kid, I probably would have just read the FairTax book itself, because my parents worked hard at teaching me to read above my grade level).

You should talk to Penley. You would sell copies to art lovers who would never even consider a fair tax book.
