About 50 years ago someone wrote a book. Duhhhhh. The working title for the book was "The Strike." The author's spouse suggested a different title just prior to publication. Can you name the author and the book? You're right .. not much to go on here. Cogitate.

What others are saying

  • Conclusion - Alin is a moron
No, I'm not a Demo-fascist, I've never voted Democrat in my life. The point is that we have people who never cared for limited gov't now jumping on the bandwagon left and right, and acting like they read Ayn Rand all along. Case in point - please don't call yourself a small gov't type and say you back the PATRIOT act (which IS fascism).

I suppose they didn't teach reading comprehension at the community college you attended?
  • re: conclusion that “jacob'” is a Demo-fascist, a “Big Government Type”,
Okay, the conclusion we can ALL make from jacob's statement:

    all these "small-government" types

That it is acceptable to make BLANKET statements about the opposition,

Okay then, we can conclude that “jacob'” is a “Big Government Type” and is therefore a Demo-fascist.
  • spouse?
Who would seriously want to marry Ayn Rand? She scares me.
  • I love how all these "small-government" types (who never lifted a finger when GWB was expanding the powers of the gov't exponentially) NOW are reading Rand and acting like it's the gospel. I wonder how Ayn Rand would feel about the PATRIOT act?
  • the strike
I know I'm late to the parade. You should all read "We the Living" by Ayn Rand as well. It describes life in Russia during the Bolshevik and early Communist years. Even more frightening than "Atlas Shrugged".
  • Atlas Shrugged
I immediately knew the answer, Atlas Shrugged. I first read the book in the mid-70's after hearing about it from Neal Boortz when he was on another Atlanta radio station. Wanting to refresh my recollection of the novel, I recently read the Cliffs Notes summary and commentary which provides a lot of information I did not pick up or remember from reading the book. I now want to read the book again. I wish that someone write a screenplay and make a movie, but I would be afraid of how Hollywood would distort the message. Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead are two books that should be required reading for every high school student. (Even the Cliffs Notes would be worthwhile)
  • How about a different book 50 years ago
"Alas, Babylon" was also written 50 years ago, and I hope our upcoming military cutbacks do not act to make that book's outcome precient. Still trying to find "One Second After" that Neal recommended.
  • Scrillimonger
There is a bright spot in them bashing it: more people will want to read the book!!!

Somehow, I have a hard time seeing anyone in Hollywood doing this movie the way it should be done. In other words not twisting the contents.
  • Movie
I have been to IMDB.com and seen the proposed actresses to play Dagny. No, No, No. Anne Hathaway (Brokeback Mount.), Angelina Jolie (UNICEF bedwetter), Charlize Theron (Democracy Now!), and Julia Roberts. I hope the Ayn Rand Inst. will control specifically who portrays whom. If not let's just get Sean Penn in, and ruin the entire legacy. The legacy and lessons are my last hope for the public to grasp what they have voted for themselves.
  • The Strike
    Mary Heaton Vorse
1930s novel that takes as its subject the spring 1929 strike by textile workers at the Loray Mill in Gastonia North Carolina. This strike was one of a series that broke out in four widely separated places in the South, the three besides Gastonia being Elizabethton, Tennessee, Ware Shoals, South Carolina, and Marion, South Carolina.

  • Atlas Shrugged Books-to-Politicians Campaign
If you believe that Atlas Shrugged has an important message, and you want to add your voice to the protest against the current policies of our government, then participate in the book campaign being conducted at: go-galt.org
  • "The Strike", Atlas Shrugged
I commute so I checked out the audiobook version the day after McCain conceded the election and listened to it again. (Yes, the radio address really is 3 hours long.) I knew that Obama would do everything in his power to make that book look like prophecy. She certainly had great insight into the statist & thuggish mindset.

    Is Directive 10-289 far away?
  • Book Published 50 Years Ago
Ayn Rand gave us the prophetic Atlas Shrugged. It should be required reading for all of us.
  • Knew It Right Away
Just finished reading it this week end. With the timing of what happening in the country it was scarier than Steven Kings best writing. All ready have two people wanting to borrow it.
  • Book Quiz
180 years ago, it was the Book of Mormon that Joseph Smith began "translating" this date.
  • The Strike
Atlas Shrugged. One, I love the book. Two, Boortz, you love the book, and Ayn Rand.
    Phenomenal writer
  • A.S. The Movie
Hate to tell you this, but if they do make a movie about Atlas Shrugged, whoever stars in it will a)take the money, and b)badmouth everything Ayn Rand stands for at the premiere, and the ensuing string of daytime and late night interviews. If it comes out, I'll not pay to see a bunch of liberals/socialists portray those characters.
  • 4/7 Quiz
Got to love google...10 seconds and had the answer
  • Quiz
Easy--1957--Ayn Rand. Just sent a copy to my teenage step daughter along with Anthem-Ayn Rand. Fountain Head is another great story.

Well, I WAS going to say Atlas Shrugged, but I obviously got beat to the punchline.
  • Atlas Shrugged
Thanks to your show, I finally read this last month. My mouth kept falling open, felt like I was reading today's news when the looters made their pronouncements. Thanks again.
  • Who is John Galt?
Drudge had an article last week that said this very prescient book is being made into a movie. Possibilities for Dagny Taggart included Angelina Jolie and Charlize Theron.

Damn, I really thought it was Harry Potter.
  • not Atlas Shrugged
a quick google search; it was first published in 1957 - 52 years ago, not 50. Even though Neal said 'about 50' - my wise ass answer - Eloise in Moscow. Published 1959 - 50 years ago. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eloise_in_Moscow
  • Prairie Fire
Of course the powerful Atlas Shrugged is the answer. But Prairie Fire by William Ayers would fit. Want to see why we are where we are? Read Prairie Fire. It came true while we slept. It lays bare their ambitions and strategy.
  • How about this Jeopardy “Question”
Jeopardy (Answer): Doctor that was superintendent of Eastern Lunatic Asylum 1841-1862
On a more serious note, We the People had better start thinking of how can stop this train ride into H*ll.
As long as the Socialist's can buy enough votes from the Dumb masses they won't care what happens.
We can use Ayn Rand's work as inspiration as to what actions we can take now - A short term “Achiever's Strike” to threaten the Socialist's vote buying money flow.
Protests can be ignored, but stopping the revenue stream will grab them by the short curlys.
    Just something to consider.
  • duh!
Of course, that's easy. Atlas Shrugged, by Ayn Rand.
  • cogitate
What a surprise so many Boortz listeners/readers guessed "Atlas Shrugged". I of course knew immediately and when I saw 125 other comments I guessed I wasn't alone. Yeah, I think those in Congress should read it but even if you sent it to them the Democrats would only read it at gunpoint.
  • Atlas Shrugged
As many have already guessed, the book is Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged. Read it in high school too many years ago. My daughter discovered it last year and has become a believer. Her goal is to earn a law degree in Jurisdictional Law. She's a believer in the strict interpretation of our Constitution.
  • Quiz
Of course Atlas Shrugged! Who is John Galt? Another great book to read during this time in history...1984.
  • Utopia of Socialism?
Conservative Nutcase have you asked your friend to name one successful socialist state that anyone would WANT to live in? We could all chip in and send Copy there!
  • The Strike
I'm guessing Ayn rand and "Atlas Schrugged".
  • Atlas Shrugged
Back in the early 60s I did my Advanced English research paper on Ayn Rand and Atlas Shrugged. The teacher loved it. I wonder what teachers would think of it these days?
  • Is A A?
Atlas Shrugged. A book that has as much to do about reality as your radio show, Neal.
  • silly me
I once argued that the "bad guys" in Atlas Shrugged were obvious straw men, that no real people could be that vile.... silly me.
  • ATLAS SHRUGGED
Maybe instead of flooding Congress with tea bags, we should mail copies of Shrugged to the White House
  • Is anyone but us paying attention...???
Ask random people you meet, "Who is John Galt?"...interesting experiment. It is refreshing, but rare, to get the grin and nod.
  • Who is John Galt?
Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. I am actually listening to the audio book version now. Best book I have ever read.
  • Alas, Babylon...I thought
Of course, I should have thought of Atlas Shrugged right off the bat. But with the North Korean's latest move, I thought of my old favorite as a kid. Living in Florida, I've often wondered what we would do if this actually happened. As to Atlas Shrugged, I don't think we have any John Galt's left in this country...we are marching down the road to destruction 50 years behind Europe and saying "ooh, isn't this road beautiful" while at the end lies nearly catastrophic failure from which we seem unable to learn. Where's my vallium.
  • Atlas Shrugged!
If the government really wanted to help, they would send a copy of "Atlas Shrugged" to every citizen in the country!
  • who is John Galt
    Atlas Shrugged
  • Atlas Shrugged
Read it years ago, and I'm now "rereading" it in the form of the unabridged audiobook read by Christopher Hurt, which I highly recommend (his Fountatinhead reading is excellent too).
  • Atlas Shrugged!!!!!
    Atlas Shrugged!!!!!
  • Pffttt
...and I thought I would be the only one who got it right.

    Easy one, Neal.
  • Just finished Atlas Shrugged..
a few weeks ago and today is my birthday and one of my presents was Fountainhead by Ayn Rand. I really enjoyed Atlas Shrugged and even though it is a work of fiction, it was really strange to read Ayn Rand words from 60 years ago and think about the dialog that takes place in our society today. She could see into the future and it is not pretty.

  • Duhhh
    Atlas Shrugged
  • Answer
    What is "Atlas Shrugged?"
  • Sad thing is
I have a liberal friend who swears that Atlas Shrugged is a capitalist ploy to scare people away from the utopia of socialism and that nothing in that book would actually be correct or come true so to speak. He thinks it is a religious text which seeks to cause people to worship and idolize capitalism. Which, in his opinion, is the greatest evil of mankind.

Yet he's a small business owner and makes his living from being a capitalist entrepeneur....
