THE TRUTH ABOUT GREEN JOBS

Barack Obama's plan to create green jobs in this country is purely in efforts to expand the number of workers on the government dole. This man is in love with government, and the more people who are getting their paychecks from the government, the better off this country will be.

So when it comes to these "green jobs" .. you do realize that this is an industry that is being created by government for government. This isn't about global warming or saving the planet. It is about government control. And Barack Obama has modeled his plan to create green jobs after Spain's recent efforts create green jobs.

But here are the ugly facts ... every "green job" that was funded by the Spanish government caused the loss of 2.2 regular jobs, or about 9 jobs lost for every 4 created. And - and this is a big one - only one out of the 10 newly created green jobs became a permanent job. In other words, folks. This isn't long term stimulus. This is a government-created industry that will create a temporary surge in jobs that aren't permanent and will squeeze out private sector growth.

Oh and there is more. Now Spain has been at it for about eight to ten years. And when this economic crisis hit, the study shows that Spain's "green jobs" policy hindered its ability to cope with the crisis. Which is ironic, considering that Barack Obama feels that created "green jobs" will be America's way of getting out of this crisis.

Speaking of green jobs, I've been reading reports recently of community colleges that are seeing a surge in unemployed workers enrolling in courses that offer training in "green-collar" jobs. These are the people that will be installing solar panels and repairing wind turbines and producing biofuels.

But guess what ... all of these people are getting trained, but where are the jobs? The current financial crisis has caused the green industry to take a major hit. Businesses are drying up. So what we will have are a lot of trained workers and too few jobs.

What others are saying

  • Mike
I see your point. For instance, the space program did a lot to advance technological invention in this country. We wouldn't have many of the things we enjoy today if it weren't for NASA.

But remember all the leftist protestors who were enraged because we were "spending money on the moon"? We weren't of course -- we were spending it right here, stimulating the economy and leading to great advances. But the morons got funding cut off because of idiotic chants about spending money on the moon.

Bottom line is, far more inventions were developed by people and companies in an effort to make a profit, than were ever invented by government.
  • Obama's Green Economy
Obama made much out ot the notion of creating "millions of good paying jobs" in the promised new "Green Economy" during his campaign. He and his administration now seem bent on "going green" with a kind of religious zeal with no regard to the consequences of such a move. While its true that some jobs will be created in the term as a result of government spending at least in the medium term, the real question is at what cost? As noted in Neal’s missive the Spanish experience with alternate energy sources finds the opportunity costs for so called "green jobs" wanting.

The author of the Madrid based study showed that, "...For every new position that depends on energy price supports, at least 2.2 jobs in other industries will disappear." How's that for a new green jobs program slogan? Wait, It gets better... How about the fact that "..The premiums paid for solar, biomass, wave and wind power - - which are charged to consumers in their bills -- translated into a $774,000 cost for each Spanish “green job” created since 2000, said Gabriel Calzada, an economics professor at the university and author of the report." Why not just mail a check for ~$750K to each prospective employee and call it even? Folks, you can't make this stuff up.

All this type spending for a notion, that is scientifically unsubstantiated, that man-made CO2 is the primary cause of so-called "global warming". For one to believe in it one must believe in three basic criteria, first that "global warming" is real, second that it is caused by man's activities, and lastly that it will have catastrophic effects on the earth and on mankind.

That's a tall order for one that has any kind of scientific bent. Fortunately for those that are proponents of this notion, their fervent beliefs and not science, serves as the basis for a "virtual religion", one that has morphed into a wonderfully nebulous term called "climate change".

These new climate religionists ignore any evidence that does not fit their orthodoxy, specifically any relationship of the earth's warming to the sun's activities. They completely ignore the fact the sun, in the last few years, has been in its quiet modest in the last ~100 yrs, with virtually no sunspots even today. The sun's current "relatively low output" correlates very well with the world's record cold temperatures and record snowfall in the last few years.

When it comes to so called global warming, it really still is pretty much all about that big yellow thing in the sky.
  • Penn and Teller
Watch Penn and Teller's Show on this stuff...I laugh at the guy that basically says that even if recycling plastic was proven to do more harm than good he wouldn't want to get rid of it because of the jobs.

Worthless work shouldn't make ANYONE feel good.
  • @ horse doctor
Doc your right on much of waht you said, but from my understanding it was a pilot project tested with the B-2 w/ info from the South African air force (embargo due to aparhied).

It is also my understanding that it is DOA due to Nancy P & Co. Once the existing stock is used that's it, as creating the "coal fuel portion creates additional carbon in the atmosphere"! Can't contribute to global warming on her watch unless your flying her wrinkled carcass to Sam Fran in a 757 on our nickel!
  • Agree with Collin except....
I think "2" is much more promising. Mentioned were people being trained to put in solar panels, for example... I certainly think people will be looking towards that technology sooner than later, for example.
  • Green products
You know you are in trouble when your son wants you to buy him some Eco-Friendly Sunglasses for his birthday. Green costs alot of green.
  • Government Creating?
Gee Mike, if my history is correct:
Duct tape - Johnson and Johnson Permacel Division (not the government)
Microwave - Raytheon Corporation (not the government)
Hmmm...yes the government did apply these technologies for military use, but they did not invent them.
When you deal with government the bureaucrats tend not to like changes. (Ever wonder why the Gatlin gun was never adopted by the Union Army – Army bureaucrats were worried it used too much ammunition!)
  • Government and the Microwave...
My understanding is that the Microwave oven was "invented" by accident, by a single Engineer...
But regardless, I would live without both items for an eternity if it meant that the federal government confined itself to the parameters of our constitution.
  • Collin hit the nail on the head
    when he said:

"But the government doesn't care about the money that can be made or saved."

I'd like everyone to stop and take a moment to ponder that statement - even you slightly left of center folks. I think what you'll conclude is that that statement is not just irreputable FACT, but what might just possibly be the root cause of what we ALL should be irritated about.

The U.S. Government never makes "business" decisions because the outcome they're focused on is completely different from what a typical business person would focus on. I defy anyone here to tell me that if the company they work for was run (i.e. decision making) the same way our government works you'd be perfectly happy.

Job creation?? When you look at the hard numbers, the only jobs the govenment has created are those jobs that has cost the tax payer more money. Wouldn't the better solution be the creation of jobs NOT funded by tax payers?

Oh....you say that these green initiatives will create jobs do ya? You know what - I will agree with you, but to a point. They will not create the long-term prosperous jobs that we as a nation should be creating. That's the only way to bring folks out of poverty into prosperity which then allows them the opportunity to do the same for their fellow man. What I predict we'll see are jobs indeed being "created" by the government, but they will be low-paying, low-skilled jobs that will do nothing but keep Wal Mart in business.

I defy anyone to point to one example where the government of a nation outperformed a capitalistic endeavor when it came to "making money" or creating jobs.
  • RED
Name calling is much easier than defending yourself against logic.
  • Stan you are missing the point
Yes jobs are being created, but several groups have said they will eliminate MORE jobs than they create!
  • stans comment
    Stan you are an idiot.
  • Green with Envy
Ove 80% of the electrical power produced in France is nuclear. Their trains run on electricity and they are perfectly positioned to convert to hydrogen powered cars and trucks since hydrogen is produced by electrolysis. That's about as green as it gets. I guess people in San Francisco, Boston, and DC don't give a flip if the flyover country is stuffed full of whirly gigs and mirrors. What hypocrisy.
  • Green? jobs
Yes, green jobs ... taking our $green$ and giving it to deadbeat socialists.
  • WHAT DO ISLAMIC TERRORIST & ECO TERRORIST HAVE IN COMMON?
Besides the fact that they both choose the color green as their symbol of faith.1- they both have an agenda to destroy America 2- they both will justify any means, criminal or otherwise to acheave their goals. 3- they both have little regard for the value of human life. and finally 4-both want the world to return to the 15th century, the Islamist for the return of shari law rule and reglious domination of all,the eco-nut for the return of low tech living and the green-religious domination of all. Both are willing to embrace the disease, misery, starvation, dysentary, and death that come with the"good old days".The only difference between these two is Islamic terrorist will kill the eco-nuts in the end and don't care about saving the enviroment.I guess there are some good things to be said for Islamic terrorist after all(I'm always looking for the silver lining in things)
  • give credit to the government for:
I know how much some of you like to talk crap about the government and how it doesn't do anything.

Perhaps you've forgotten that it was the government who is responsible for your microwave and your duct tape. If it were not for our government how many things would we not have today or have to have waited longer for.

The government has been behind many inventions that we love and use today, so enough of this "the government only wastes money" garbage.
  • Green for China!
Thank you Bob! Also add to this list the production of the majority of the solar rechargeable batteries. Ever go to Wal-Mart and look at the solar yard lights, they are all Chinese manufactured.
  • Thanks Red
Been having the hardest time to get this to come up on Drudge! I'm more worried about the left wing extremists! But I guess the gubmint wants to put all conservatives in the same group with the KKK. They have blinders on.
  • "green jobs"
As someone who works in the Air Force Petroleum Office, we need any and all sources of energy. For Example, the AF is currently qualifiling aircraft to fly with a 50-50 mixture of tradition jet fuel (JP-8) and Synthetic Jet Fuel, made from coal or natural gas. this is a "green job" that seems to be economically feasable, and will actually (GASP!) SAVE THE TAXPAYER MONEY.
  • Green
The closest thing to a so-called "Green Job" a person can realistically expect will be Cucumber Waxer at Publix or Kroger.
  • No it isn't Spain
But I bet you think it'll be different here some how. Just because you've been told it will.
  • 3 Green Jobs
As a construction management student, I am exposed to many more "green" technologies than I would care to mention. It's a university after all, so they're all about sustainability and green building and stuff. Anyways, the way I see it, there are 3 types of green technologies:

    1. These are cost effective green technologies. Think low flow fixtures and certain types of insulation. It doesn't matter if you support being "green," because these will save you money quickly at a nominal cost over traditional technologies.

    2. These are "green" technologies that only see you monetary savings after many, many years. Think solar panels and geothermal heating/cooling. They're more efficient, but much more expensive. It's hard to make a financial case for these unless someone just really wants to "do their part."

    3. These are just stupid technologies. Corn ethanol is the perfect example. Someone decided that making moonshine and mixing it with a little bit of gasoline would make a great fuel for the masses. Never mind that sugarcane is much more efficient. Never mind that you're using food to make fuel. We gotta save the planet using any means possible!

Anyways, I support the first category. Why? Because added efficiency saves you money. I like saving money. The second category has promise, but needs time before it can save you and me money more quickly. The third category needs to just be abandoned. But the government doesn't care about the money that can be made or saved. They care about driving out the private market and making people dependent on the government.
  • Jobs
Shouldnt the focus be on the fact that jobs are being created? Where is the optimism Neal? If the private sector wanted to create jobs then I am sure people would apply for them also.
  • green energy .... what a joke
I'm sick of this sh*t. We as a nation need to utilize nuclear energy. I contend that it's way less polluting than any combustible fuel source and waaaayyyyy cheaper to harness than some idiotic biofuel. I mean, who the f#$k wants to drive around in a f*%king hybrid that runs on corn and cow farts, FFS! Give me a George Jetson jetpack already! Time to evolve.
  • Espana
Damn, Neal-I guess it's a good thing this isn't Spain!
  • Green
It has gotten to the point where the mere mention of the word "green" makes me want to scream. Everywhere I turn, at work, at the store, on TV, I hear green green green...To actually have the arrogance to think that first off, us humans are responsible for the weather, and then even more arrogantly, to believe that we can actually change the climate, as if we have a magic thermostate in the sky, is beyond the pale.pale
  • Green Jobs
A recent investigative report on green jobs also found that over 80% of the value of items such as Wind turbines, blades, and similar product will be manufactured overseas in China & India, leaving only the installation & maintenance in the US. I didn't think that this was supposed to be a "Chinese Products Stimulus plan"!

And Congress still did not address legal issues with these green energy sources such as "decapitating migratory birds". Tehachpe CA, has a huge farm that is always under attack from the eco's! And lets not forget Diane Fienstien working to block the solar system in the Mohave desert near Death Valley.

Nevada is currently thanking California legislators for their Green initiative for Carbon, as the manufacturers move across the border ahead of full implimentation, or plan the fire sale as they go out of business.
  • here a interesting statement...
If there has to be a tax credit or other form of government support, then is must not be practical or profitable.
  • The Federal Government reports on 'right wing extremism'...
    Its off topic, but I just thought I would let everyone know that if you believe in states rights, and more focus on local and state governments then a new Federal Government report believes you to be a "Right Wing Extremist". Here you go;
