THE 'OTHER' BUDGET

Nancy Pelosi is really excited about passage of the Democrat budget today. But just in case you weren't aware .. the Republicans did put forth their own alternative to the budget. Though its too little, too late ... here are the details of the Republican alternative.

  • To start with, the Republicans want spending in the economic stimulus package to be rescinded starting in 2010.
  • They want a freeze on non-defense spending and a moratorium on earmarks for Congress.
  • The Republicans want .. wait for this .. changes to the tax code! They want to allow taxpayers to choose how they can file their taxes - the current system or a more simple option: Individuals earning $50,000 or less, and couples earning $100,000 or less, would be taxed at 10%. Anyone making more than that would be taxed at 25%.
  • Changes to Medicare: workers under 55 would enroll in private plans and receive premium subsidies equal to the average Medicare benefit when they retire. Benefits would not be changed for people in the program or people older than 55.

OK ... this is all very special. But the obvious question is "Where the hell were these ideas when you were in charge?" Sorry .. but the Republicans still have not done nearly enough to atone for the mess they created when they controlled every branch of government. Many of the problems we're facing today ... including the problem of a U.S. government now controlled by anti-capitalists ... can be laid at the failures of the Republican party over the past eight years.

As for their idea on taxes? Give me a break. We've tried that flat-tax idea before .. back in 1986. There were two flat tax rates back them, just as the Republicans are proposing now .. and the tax code has been modified nearly 10,000 times since then. The Republican alternative isn't making news .. but things would have been quite different if they had proposed something like the FairTax. If the Republicans want a piece of the news pie they are going to have to go bold. A repeat of the 1986 flat tax idea isn't bold.

Bring me to Washington to talk to the Republican caucus. I'll get them fired up.

Yeah ... like that's going to happen.

What others are saying

  • FairTax flaw
The problem with the FairTax is simple. Neal even alluded to it. In 1986, a relatively simple tax setup was put in place. Since then it has been changed 10,000 times. (According to Neal.)

The FairTax might be great -- at first. But then politicians will start playing with it in order to buy votes. The bottom end (those who get all their tax rebated or prebated) will be raised higher and higher, ensuring some people pay no tax, while others ("the rich") see their burden increase. Then you can bet that certain 'special' groups will start getting exemptions. Before long the FairTax will be bastardized just as badly as the current tax system.
  • rebublican neal
As a republican, you would fit right in. they would like your ideas of taxing tobacco (and any other things YOU don't like) and they would like your ideas of mandatory seatbelts.
You also need to realize how IGNORANT you are for eating redmeat.
  • Repubs woke up.... maybe
Yeah it's late, could have done this when they were in power but maybe this is a sign they are waking up so let's don't beat them down now!! "OR" let's vote everyone out and send a really big message to the future runners...
  • While I am a FairTax fan, I do not see it happening.

I would take a flat tax of 10%. No deductions. No one exempt. If you make $1,000 you pay 10%; if you make $1 billion, you pay 10%. That includes capital gains.

If nothing else, it saves billions of dollars in filing and record keeping.
  • My Money
    Fairtax now
DRIP now (don't return incumbent politicians)
    Politicians cause anal leakage.
If I go to a GM dealer will I be able to visit my money?
  • when do they start printing the Obama-bucks?
What is that even supposed to mean?

You still don't get it, do you smooth? The time to start stocking up on gold began when your Boy George was in office.
  • The dimocrats just drove the car off the cliff
All I want to know is when do they start printing the Obama-bucks?

Time to start stocking up on gold.
  • Amen....
I could not agree more and have been preaching to all my Republican friends, "Your party sold you out..plain and simple."
Our only hope for change is to let the Republicans know, we are gathering in numbers everyday.
If the Republicans want power again, then PROMISE the Fair Tax publicly and unequivocally or good-bye GOP. I'm willing to go over the cliff with the Democrats if the Republicans won't take us where we need to go. We will not blink.
  • Tax Code
You still would have the option of either one people. This is just supposed to make it 'easier' to file for some.

The ONLY plus side I see from this might be people finally realizing how much they actually pay in federal taxes and then we could get some real reform.
  • OYEEE
Lets try this again. If you make 200k you would pay 10,000 on the first 100k and 25,000 on the second 100k. Once you cross the 100k threshold it does not go back and grab 15,000. Bush (and I'm not a fan) changed this in his time in office.
  • Alabamastan
I might be wrong as I havent read the actual tax proposal of the Republicans, but I'm guessing that your income up to $100,000 would be taxed at 10%, and anything in excess would be taxed 25%. So in your case it would be 10,000 at 10% rate and the additional 2000 at the 25% rate which is $500. That would be a $10500 tax burden, assuming my math is correct, which it almost certainly isnt (government educated).
  • Capt Jack
You pay one tax to $100,000 no matter if you make $1 or 1 million. Once you cross the threshold you payer a higher rate on all money after 100k. It does not tax the money from 1-99,999 at the higher rate.
  • Alabamastan
Well I guess since you are from Alabama I will cut you a break on your education. Bush changed the tax so that you pay the lower rate up to 100k then pay the higher rate after. So your math is wrong.
  • Taxes
The Republicans are stupid too! If we make $100,000 our taxes would be $10,000 and if we make $100,001 our taxes would be $25,000. A pay raise could kill your standard of living with this dumb scheme.
  • Those Innovative Republicans
Interesting. I make $60k/yr an my wife makes $32k/yr. So we have $92k to pay taxes on. According to the Reps' plan, we pay $9200 in taxes. My wife has been doing some freelance work and stands to earn about $10k this year. If it were up to the Reps, we would then pay $25,500 in taxes. I guess she'll have to limit her freelance earnings or earn $15k more to break even. What a great disincentive! These Republicans really know how to stimulate people to earn money!

How is this any different than what the Democrats are proposing, except that the Dems' rate change is at $250k and not $100k?
  • Fair Tax
I agree, too little too late. The term "Lame Duck" comes to mind for this proposal.

It just shows me the republicans are still not listening. Its time to start shouting about the Fair Tax. I think I might try to get to a Tea Party. But I will be carrying a Fair Tax sign.

Action. If we want change, we need to take action. Lets not depend on other people who aren't listening. Get out there and start promoting the ideas you care about.
  • This is spot on
The Republicans got us into this mess by acting like Democrats and now the Democrats are one-upping them by acting like socialists. Even if the Republicans get back into power again, why should we beleive they have truly reformed. How many of these jokers who blasted earmark spending were all too willing to accept those same earmarks for their own respective districts?

In the end, the average Republican politician is nothing more than a political pragmatist where principles are only a secondary concern to political survival (apparently they cant even get that right).

Maybe those Free State project people are on to something.
  • Mr. Boortz Goes To Washington!
Couldn't agree more, Neal! Now that they've had their fun and it's the Democrats turn to drive, Republicans suddenly want to take the car into the shop for maintenance?

All these Republican apologists talking about getting back to the principals of Ronald Reagan. Ha! It's sickening. Those transparent toads are only talking about Reagan because they are not in charge. They had 12 years in the oval office since Reagan -- more years than Dems -- and now that major liberals are in charge you guys are selling Ronald freaking Reagan??????? Are you kidding?

And exactly how did they plan on implementing their budget? I guess they were going to just walk up to Nancy and Obama and say, hey guys, since we acted like liberals for the last 8 years, how about you guys act like conservatives? Good luck!

And all Hannity has to do is whisper Reagan and his ratings skyrocket and he buys another house in the Hamptons. What a bunch of suckers in his audience.

Nice job, Neal! Don't let us forget they blew it and maybe they will be cornered into the Fair Tax once and for all.
