THE GOVERNMENT IS BUYING CARS

Barack Obama has decided to help out the auto industry by having the government purchase 17,600 new US-made fuel-efficient cars. These are cars that the government more than likely doesn't need. But they will be purchased in order to boost the auto industry. Is this a long term boost? A true economic stimulus? Absolutely not. It is nothing but a government gimmick. The government is not really buying these cars. The government doesn't have the money. The government is borrowing the money and sticking you, the taxpayers, for the payments. All this to make some sort of a political point about green cars.

Imagine what the American taxpayers could do with $285 million. You could spend it on cars that you will actually want! Not cars that the government wants you to want. Buying what you want is a free market exercise. Buying what the government wants you to buy - or the government buying it in your name --- well, that's certainly not free enterprise.

The government decides what you want. More change you can believe in.

What others are saying

  • government auto purchase
Do all auto makers have a equal shot at selling vehicles to the govt? In that GM & Chrysler are "owned" by govt will that not give them the edge? Oklahoma had issue a few yrs ago about state vehicles, not knowing how many or where they are, I willing a wager that muchthe same would be true in all 50 & fed level.
  • new cars
These new cars better have a strong engine to pull my 40 foot RV.
  • Government cars
Can't wait till some big SUV runs a few over at a stop light.
  • govt cars in taxpayers' names
I'm looking to get a car this spring- well, truck. Is this going to screw up my getting it? I think we have something where you can't have more than one car loan or something. Would the govt just hand over one of those cars to me? I mean, I'll take it if they don't have anyone to drive it- but it has to have some kind of hauling capability- green or not.
  • Democrats and Big Business
Contrary to popular opinion, Liberal democrats and big business have always been in bed together. Democrats understand that people must work and wealth mus be created if they are to be able to tax that wealth to promote their socialist agendas.
Big business gives the democrats big money which buys them favorable legislation that shelters them from those pesky, efficient small business start ups that threaten them with competition. Big business can be controlled by the democrats, little entreprenurial businesses are a lot tougher. Then, of course, there are the unions and their relationship with big business and the democrats. It's just one big happy cluster X!&?
    Hitler loved big business too.
The Big three auto makers must not fail.
It would be a lot harder to get in bed with Honda and Volkswagon.
  • THE GOVERNMENT IS BUYING CARS
Your warranty is the second biggest part of the price of a new car. Since the government is carrying the warranty, may as well buy them.
Hope we got $100 above invoice.:)
  • Gov't vehicles redux
Another thought; I forgot to mention that any vehicle not consuming imported petroleum products is a blessing to all of us and can only help make us that much more free and save us from being slaves to the OPEC.
  • John,

Some of those Toyotas are made in the US by US workers; some American car companies produce parts or cars outside of the US. Which is better?

Anyone buying a car should buy the best car (or truck) that the person needs at the price the person can afford; this goes for government as well.

I do think that when times are tough and the President is saying we all need to sacrifice that delaying the purchase of vehicles might be one of those things an agency can sacrifice.

Seriously, I bet a lot of the cars being replaced could last another year or more.

What agency is checking to see if replacements are needed?
  • Contracts
These cars were planned for and needed by the government but they are just speeding up the delivery and purchase of these vehicles.

Not EVERYTHING is some grand scheme by the government to screw us all. This clearly isn't going to save the auto industry by itself but it could buy them a little more time to figure out how to save their companies.
  • I can accept that this is part of a contract, but I would question that contract. I am not sure the US government should have a contract that requires it to buy cars on some sort of schedule.

The fleet should be evaluated and cars purchased as needed. Cars these days are so well built that they last a long time.

I bet there is a lot of waste in those contracts.

Also, I am not sure that buying from American companies is any better than buying from a Japanese company that makes cars in the US.
  • Gov't vehicles
Well I for one don't see the harm here, and I'm as conservative as anyone here. A non story in my opinion.

Government has a HUGE fleet of automobiles, trucks and buses. I don't know if this is an attempt to stimulate the auto makers or not, but the fact is that vehicles wear out over time and must be replaced. Why not replace them with new and more efficient American vehicles?

Have you seen what the Postal Service drive and the sheer amount of vehicles they use? And theres only one passenger on board! Now there is an opportunity to make an entire fleet of Government owned vehicles hydrogen powered or diesel electric Hybrids or some other alternate fuel vehicle.

Would you rather your government bought Toyotas, Kias or Hyundais?

Come on people. Not every government spend is a stimulus or a scandal.
  • Wrong again, as usual...
The government "probably" doesn't need these cars? You couldn't even be bothered to find out whether or not they were needed? That's just sad.

They are needed, of course... they're part of the government fleet of cars that's due for replacement. And the purchase of new cars (of one type or another) was already written into the standing contracts the government has with GM and Ford.

But hey, this is talk radio, home of half-truths and distortions! Don't let the truth get in the way of ill-informed outrage, mouth-breathers. That's not as much fun. (Well, except for me, to watch and laugh.....)
  • math error
    Joyce M/Blythe
You need to go back to third grade. $285million divided by 399million people is less than $1/person. Not much, but still a waste of MY (and your) money
  • Doesn't matter what we could have done with the $185M
After stealing back the bonuses AIG execs got, these cars will be virtually free!
  • free markets?
The truth of the matter is that America has not seen a free market capitalist economy in decades. It is truly a bizarre notion that a communist country like China have become better at capitalism that America. So much so that the Chinese are lecturing Americans on capitalism.Welcome to the new U.S.S.A Right now America got precisely the president it deserved because people have allowed themselves to be deceived by both democrats and republicans and their obsession with the warfare/inflation state. No wonder Obama's adminitration is talking about the global dollar. Both parties are using crises mode to destroy the dollar, whether its the 'New Great Depression, or War on Terror'. The American people being tricked. All while the govt deliberately puts things in place to worsen the situation rather than fix problems.
  • Government Buying Cars
Neal, I wonder how long it will be before we're driving those "Tribi's" that the East Germans used to drive when the wall was up? Man, those were some really classy cars....particle board, two-stroke engine...yeah, give me one.
  • Why that's
almost $1million per person! Not counting illegals. I could do a LOT of stimulating for that!
