SPEAKING OF TAX INCREASES

I've told you that Senator Max Baucus wants to raise taxes on the evil rich, and he wants to do it now. But it turns out that Baucus' bill will actually increase the income tax rate for some Americans who earn as little as $104,425 a year.

According to the Heritage Foundation, the legislation would raise rates on the top two income brackets from 33% to 36% and from 35% to 39.6%. These rates will affect all taxpayers who fall into these brackets, regardless of their filing status. In other words, taxpayers who earn as little as $104,425 would see their tax rates increase.

According to the IRS, "the second highest income bracket kicks in at an income level of $104,425 for a married person filing separately; $171,550 for someone filing as a single person; $190,200 for someone filing as a head of household; and $208,850 for a married couple filing jointly. Under Baucus' proposal, the tax rates for all these people would jump to 36 percent."

The highest income bracket kicks in at an income level of $186,475 for a married person filing separately; and $372,950 for all other filing statuses.

Unless Congress changes the income levels at which the top two tax rates kick in .. there are a lot of Americans who are going to see their income taxes increase. Big time.

I'm waiting for some Democrat to just go ahead and propose a confiscatory tax of somewhere around 90% on all Americans who are evil enough to earn over $500,000 a year. As soon as they can figure out a way to exempt Bono and Barbra they'll give it a go.

  • what a picture
just what i like to see a man smiling while he picks youre pocket.
  • Huxtables? Seriously?
How can anyone tax a ficticious family?
  • Hey Chris 90% tax
Envy much. Who are you to limit someone? This country is great because of capitalism allows you to have no limits on what we can archive and earn.
  • Taxing the Huxtables
Put a face on it. One was a baby doc the other a lawyer in NY.
They are not just raising the taxes on the small business owner but hard working Americans like the Huxtables.
  • The problem with taxing the rich
Is that there are so few of them. You tax where the money is & the money is in the hands of the middle class.
  • Neal Cherry Picks Again
The post about Sen. Baucus "Increasing Taxes" on the evil rich does not take into account that the tax "increases" you state as "increases" are in today's existing tax law that has been in effect since 2001 and will automatically happen now in 2011. What the Baucus proposal does is restate the same tax rates that will apply in 2011 under the existing tax law, not increase them as Neal's post makes one believe. By the by, the bill does propose decreases in the stated tax rates for taxpayers in the lower tax brackets by freezing them at the rates under the current law and not have them increase in 2011 as the current tax law says they will. In addition to there being no increases in the tax brackets as noted above, it is misleading to point to the married filing separately number of $104,425 to illustrate how low the tax brackets go. It should be stressed that to be taxed at that income level you have to elect to be taxed at the married filing separately level. Otherwise, the married couple would have to have income of $208,850 to hit the existing 33% rate as you state. Otherwise, I do agree that some adjustment to the income levels would have to be considered to keep the taxes from raising 3% under the the existing tax law (or Baucus' proposal) for those families earning less than $250,000.
  • 90% tax for all those over 500k
I am in full support of it, provided they nail every Hollywood and Sports star. I would love to see Congress try to enforce 90% on working people and not on "stars"
