From Reuters. Pirates vow revenge.

The Wall Street Journal: "Saving Captain Phillips."

New York is not the tax capital of the world! Why in the world to people even stay there?

Rich Lowery on "The Rise of the TARP State."

Justice Ginsburg shows us what happens when you appoint an ACLU lawyer to the Supreme Court. She thinks referring to foreign law and foreign judges in rendering decisions is just fine.

Read this to understand how your health care is about to go straight into the toilet. It's the last stand for private health insurance. The savages will win.

Economists believe that the recession will end this year, but unemployment will hit 10%.

Which US state has the highest taxes? I thought Barack Obama's stimulus plan was supposed to alleviate the need for states to increase taxes.

Speaking of taxes ... here are some other creative ways states are trying to raise revenues.

The Washington Times says that a provision slipped into a House climate bill would allow people "suffering" from global warming to sue the federal government or private businesses.

Here's a no brainer: Educators and child development experts say the self-esteem movement of the 1980s did kids a disservice and adults should resist over praising.

A convicted drug dealer has to pay $47 million to the state because he failed to purchase "drug stamps."

Have you been following any of the brouhaha at Arizona State University? Apparently the school will now name its largest scholarship program after Barack Obama.

And for the real news of the day ... Barack Obama finally got a dog.

Virginia Beach wants Obama to use stimulus money to pump sand onto their beaches. Yeah ... pumping sand. Now THAT'S stimulus you can believe in. That's almost as good as my raking leaves in a National Forest.

Hey, you can follow the Talkmaster & Jamie Dupree on Twitter!

Speaking of Twitter, there's a little worm running around it. Here's how to keep safe.

Our Jacksonville affiliate has up a photo gallery from the event this weekend if you want to have a peek at the Talkmaster, Jamie Dupree and Clark Howard.

What others are saying

  • Portugese Water Dog
I found it interesting that the Obamas got their dog from Sen. Ted Kennedy, who breeds Portugese Water Dogs, which apparently love the water; I guess Ted wants to give at least his dogs a chance to survive if he drives off any more bridges into the water (lord knows they would be left on their own to swim out of it).
  • Jamie Dupree
Jamie's true colors came out this morning on the flagship (wsb am750) when he boasted many times (all morning) that IF the Navy Seals had failed or even killed the captain held hostage, the Republicans WOULD HAVE held it up against Obama like the Failed rescue in Iran during the Carter times. I think everyone was pulling for a rescue Jamie, not a political failure for Obama. Your "middle of the road" and "objective" reporting is a load of crud. You're a liberal, just admit it and get on with the propaganda.
  • Arizona State University... almost
I had such respect for the president of ASU not falling in line and crumbling in the face of PC pressure... until he crumbled.

ASU's statement made perfect sense - Barack Obama has no 'body of work' on which to base an honorary degree.

But how in the world could they name their most prestigious scholarship after him? What has he done with respect to education to warrant a scholarship being named after him?

Still waiting for those college transcripts Mr. Obama...
  • VA BCH pumping
Now I dislike the stimulus plan as much as the next conservative, but I believe it is unfair to comsider sand pumping in the same wavelength as leaf raking. Pumping sand is very costly and tourism is a major bread winner for the civilians. I believe in this intance it may be a true case of economic stimulus. As opposed to raking leaves which is kinda stupid.
    Just a thought,
    KDO
  • Not really reality
Here's a reality check for you...

...you picked your nose when you were 3 years old. You are forever a nose-picking moron, right? The crusades were how long ago? Last I knew they ended a long time ago and the Church stopped torturing and beheading and burning. Now if only some other religeon would do the same.
  • The face of socialized medicine.
Want to see what socialized medicine will look like? Look at the TSA employees in our nations airports. Look at the employees in a VA hospital. You do not want this.
  • AP wire story
    @Mike F:

The reason "Muslim" and "Islamic" don't appear in an AP article is because they are a respectable institution whose job it is to report facts.

If you want hate speech designed to bait ignorant rednecks into hating an entire religion (man, you people really don't remember the history of Nazi Germany very well, do you?), you turn to talk radio, not an AP article. Here in reality, the fine folks at the AP understand that religion is irrelevant -- a pirate is a pirate no matter what invisible people they worship.

But hey, if we want to start bringing religion into it, let me just point out that the Catholic church rapes little boys and the Christian religion in general is responsible for the Crusades. How's that for a religion of peace?
  • Sorry, Rich Lowry has little credibility left.
This is the guy that wrote a pro bailout column back in September in Townhall.com, 'A Bailout to Save Capitalism' And now he's now complaining how TARP has turned out!
  • "BO" & "The Pirate Was a Kid"
A WATER Dog from Ted the Swimmer??
Who didn't think that all the way through?

And a sixteen year-old can kill your a$$ just as dead as a 30 year-old.
  • The captured pirate is a kid
and they will play this up. Watch and see.

They will spend countless hours discussing why this poor kid was forced into this life by the evil rich capitalists or somehow it will be the good ol USA's fault. It isn't his fault he became a pirate. Blah, Blah, Blah...

Then it will be our responsibility to fix the problems in Somalia. Hell, we'll probably send them a bailout too.
  • Not Pirates !!!
Now we find out that those were NOT pirates - that WAS the Somali Navy !!!
  • re: overpraising kids
Please don't group all of us born in the 80's together. I've always worked hard to what I have and also don't believe in handouts.

I started working at 16 and have worked for everything I have. At 19, I moved out and haven't taken a penny from my parents since. I take responsibility for my actions and don't blame others if I don't have something.

Besides, I have seen many people with a huge sense of entitlement that were born long before the 80's... So please don't group us all together.
  • Comment
Why do the bunch in DC keep dreaming up more "laws" when we/they can't/won't even enforce the laws we have already?
Justice Ginsburg romancing laws of third world countries, when those countries have the most lawless people on the planet.
  • overpraising kids
I always find this interesting. I was in middle school in the 80's and my brother is only 4 years younger than me. My dad's favorite saying to us was: you're about as handy as a bear cub with his p-cker.

We're pretty independent. I'm a problem solver. We both work very hard for what we have and don't believe in handouts. We always have- sure I got a pony for Christmas when I was 12, but I cleaned 10 stalls a day to keep him! Sure my grandma bought my brother a car when he was 16, but he had to pay her back until she forgave the loan as his high school grad present.

However, I have low self esteem sometimes (aw..), but then I just get mad and get over it. Psh. My brother is now a bitter jerk. He says "you're welcome" to people with foodstamps/welfare in line in front of him.

We're realists tho, and know life can be unfair, beat you down, whatever, and you make of it what you can.

My two sisters were born in the 80's and they went thru this crap at school. "Everyone's a winner" and "everyone is special in their own way". They do have the largest sense of entitlement I've ever seen. It's always amazing to me how we come from the same family, yet are so different in our values and expectations.

My second youngest sister had a fit that our parents didn't start a college fund for her when she was born. "Why was I working my butt off to get straight A's if there isn't any money?!" She then had the audacity to say that I shouldn't have had my horses because they were eating her college fund (I got my horse just before she was conceived)! My youngest sister isn't nearly as bad, but she has her issues too. But I can't think of any now because she isn't that bad at all. Hmm....

    Amazing.
  • What's wrong with making drug dealers buy drug stamps?
If we're going to "relegalize and tax" MJ and some other drugs, what's wrong with buying excise tax stamps? That's the idea! All of these tax laws are constitutional because the fact that you purchased stamps canNOT be used as evidence against your drug dealing, as that would be self-incrimination.

  • the fourth pirate
There's a spot in Charleston,SC where they used to hang pirates. Let's bring that last Somalie there and carry on the tradition.
  • The Pirate Story According to AP
AP wire stars with the rescue, then reviews in detail the events leading up to it. BUT this article is 1450 words long, and the words "Muslim" or "Islamic" never appear anywhere within it. Hmm.
  • New York is now the tax capital of the world
How great would it be if Wall Street decided to migrate little by little and set up a new "Wall Street" in another city?, someplace like Houston, Atlanta, Charleston, etc… what if major companies HQ’d in NY (if not already planning to go off shore because of taxes) decide to close up shop and move out of the area, how long would it take the democrats to figure out that high taxes make the productive vote with their feet and they move. Let the wealth migration begin!!!! Come one NY, kill that goose... screw the golden eggs
  • "Bo"
Anyone else find it odd that the 1st dog's name has the same letters in its name as the President's initials? Just sayin'...
  • Name the dog Karl Barx
    Neal,

You should have had a contest to name the president's kid's new puppy. It seems they named it BO. My first thought was that it was their dad's initials. I just saw on the news it was named after an uncle nicknamed Diddly. I don't know, but that seems just a little racist to me, Bo Diddly. Could you imagine...

Anyways, back to the idea of a contest to name the mutt.

My suggestion is we name it Karl Barx. I predict in the end BO will become synonymous with Karl Marx.

I'll bet there would be many great suggestions were you to have a contest.
  • the new First Dog
Pres. Obama should get a cat to go with that dog.
  • Twitter Worm
Sorry Neal, but it looks like there is a new worm spreading through Twitter. I'd stay away until they fix it. Here is the reference and details. http://www.f-secure.com/weblog/archives/00001653.html
  • Taxs
