PUTTING IT IN PERSPECTIVE

Joe Biden spent Earth Day by announcing that you, the taxpayers, are going to pay $300 million so that cities and towns can purchase more fuel-efficient vehicles for government employees. Remember, this is all in the name of "economic stimulus."

Just to keep things in perspective ...

Wasn't it earlier this week that Barack Obama asked his cabinet to trim a collective $100 million for their budgets? Now two days later, this administration is willing to throw around three times that amount so that government hacks can drive around in fancy hybrid vehicles.

That's change you can believe in.

What others are saying

  • Small Fuel Efficient cars
    >>So what's going to happen when the gooberment tries to force all these athletically built Americans into these cars?<<

Lawsuits. That's discrimination. Or government will issue "rebates" for custom fitting.
  • Lee Roy
Your comment made me LOL IRL!
  • Tiny Cars
Ok, here's something I've been thinking for a while now, and haven't head a single person address it.

We have a lot of big men in this country, and I dont mean fat. My husband is 6' 5" and built like a professional football player. He can't physiclly fit into one of these pregnant roller skate cars. So what's going to happen when the gooberment tries to force all these athletically built Americans into these cars?

    A mass rebellion I hope.
  • Re. Answering your question...
Adakin- No, you "think" incorrectly. Why don't you do a quick search before posting what you "think?" Every article states that he asked to cut $100M as in Million.

  • Did they....
Do a cost benefit analysis before ditching the existing cars? For example, if they have to lay out 10k more for each one of these gems, how long will it take them to re-coup this amount in fuel savings???

My guess is longer than the useful life of the vehicle. Duhhhhh.
  • Hybrid vs Diesel
The 'gummit' is offering millions in tax credits to get us to buy Hybrids, but the new 'clean diesel' engines can provide equal or better fuel mileage figures but don't get the tax credit. Ford sells a 5 passenger diesel car in Europe, but won't sell it here (even though BMW, Honda, Toyota, VW and others are or will be selling there diesel cars here.

VW even has a two passenger 200mpg diesel hybrid that they will sell in 2010 in Europe! (Google "VW, 200mpg")

    But not for us.
  • Answering your question...
"Wasn't it earlier this week that Barack Obama asked his cabinet to trim a collective $100 million for their budgets?"

No Neal, I think it was $100 BILLION... WITH A "B"
  • My 12 year old is smarter than Al Gore
My 12 year old daughter and I were looking at graphs in her science book comparing the earth's recorded temperatures to the CO2 levels in the atmosphere. She said to me, "But the graphs don't match up. How can they be sure it's related?" How indeed...
  • What?
I didnt say anything about Germans 60 years ago. In fact, I highly doubt nazis voted for Obama. I would actually purposely vote for any party that neo-nazis or kkk didnt vote for
  • I LOVE THIS IDEA!!!!!!
Put ALL government employees in smartcar clownmobiles, they should lead by example. No more congressional limos and such. While their at it no more Nancy Pelousey's flying BROOMSTICK ONE cross country, let her commute in a Prius to Ca. and back.I want to see Barney Franks fat ass fit in a smartcar, rolling phonebooth. How 'bout a presidental motorcade of little Honda/ Fits transporting Obama around.(question: how many secret service agents can fit in a Prius? Answer:8 but they all have to to be members of the Shriners)I know its never gonna happen but I'm easily amused.
  • ... purchase more fuel-efficient vehicles ...
... and drive twice, three times as much.
    Doesn't make any sense ...
    All works out the same.
  • Stan GayBull
I can see you still support Naziesque tactics of expecting the government to actually engage in scientific activities, just like when Germany sewed bodies together and tied women's legs together while giving birth. Great display of a drooling moron.
  • Erf Day
I found it very comforting when my son came home from his private school, in Macon, GA, and told me that his science teacher used the earth day platform to explain continental glaciation. I can't wait to write them another check!
  • stupid foreign cars
A small town that neighbors mine bought a frickin Toyota Prius as their police car with the justification of being "green". The fact that the car can be outrun by a five year old on a tricycle didnt seem to matter in the decision to buy this piece of crap.

Thw worst part is that this is in Michigan where the auto industry is the lifeblood of the state and the Big 3 is in dire straits needing all the help they can get. No matter, being "green" supercedes all else.

  • This money is not for hybrid vehicles for government hacks, it for hybrid buses for public transit passengers.

Mind you that still doesn't change the status of the spending.
  • Earth Day

  • See what happens
If this works, then it will be genius. This is better than Bush's plan of not giving money to science.
  • What does Earth Day mean to Americans?
It means that we got to watch our president of the United States stoop down and kiss the Saudi Arabia king, Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz,'s ring just so that we can keep buying their oil. This is the price we pay for not allowing oil drilling to take place here. Our president bends down low to kiss the hand of our enemy.
  • Just went out to check...
the tire I burned for Earth Day. Looks like it smoldered almost until sunrise. ...Cool
