Leaving the University of Georgia after your junior year to stand for the NFL draft? Worth several million dollars at least. Getting drafted by the Detroit Lions? Having to live and work in Detroit? Priceless. There is a God.

What others are saying

  • Lucy Clark........
Some players really do play for the academics. Ga Tech's Darryl Richard for one. He graduated in 3 years, played his senior year as a grad student, finished his MBA before the bowl game, and now has been drafted by the Patriots.
  • the lions roar..
in despair, after this guy takes a few really good hits due to the crappy defense hell be thinking real hard about going on the injured list.a chain is only as strong as its weakest link and the lions have a defense very comparible to that of a lot of class A high school football teams.
  • priceless
He'll be one highly paid crash test dummy behind that sieve of an O line. He better invest wisely because he is going to a QB graveyard.
  • It could be worse
It could be worse, Beirut comes to mind
  • @$500,000 per year max
Poor boy will have to work for 82 years to be paid $41M. Once the lions get their tarp money!

Actually, I think Stafford is a bust. He's really not that good of a QB. I've watched him 3 yrs in the SEC and he's average at best. I'd put Clemson's Cullen Harper ahead of him on talent. But, hey what do I know? He benefited from an excellent coach and a great TEAM; but individually.... no way he stacks up there --- this is laughable.
  • NFL Draft
I don't blame Stafford. Look what happened to Cornelius Ingram at UF. He decided to stay his senior year. Blew out his knee is spring practice. He had to sit out his senior year. He was drafted in the fifth round where he would clearly have been a first or second round his junior year. And let's face it - many athletes are playing college football for academic purposes. Some do.
  • Next Year
Detroit will still have the first pick.

His only chance would be to be a lower pick and less money. And the possibility of a career ending injury in college.
  • The New Ford car...
It's called the "Stafford" and it will go 0 to 16 in 17 weeks!
  • I would do it too
Quite frankly, with that contract I would leave school too, even if it meant living in Detroit. You can always go back to school after your broken body can no longer play ball, and if you use your head a bit that money will last a long time.
  • Detroit
Hey, DC is a lot nicer than Detroit, I'd rather live in LA than Detroit, and I'd rather visit NYC than even pass through the city limits of Detroit. Stafford should buy a helicopter so he doesn't have to touch the ground in Detroit except for when absolutely necessary.
  • Maybe a Star is Born?
Lotsa areas around Detroit are HIGHLY livable. What could happen? The new guy on the block gets his experience with the worst NFL team, begins to build a reputation and one of two things happens (well, maybe three), he becomes valuable and a contender acquires him for $$$$$, or he supplies the spark and a bad team comes together after a bit to be the Cinderella team (or he gets hurt and goes back to get his degree when he can no longer play).
  • Detroit lions
For $41 million gaurenteed... I'll work in Detriot. No one said he has to live there year round. Condo for the season and some place nice for the rest of the year.
  • Detroit
There are worse places to live than Detroit, ya know. NYC, LA and DC come to mind. ;-)

Of course, those of us here consider the Lions a joke... but it's our joke, thank you very much. ;-)
  • Jocks
I understand hating our cultural elevation of celebrities and jocks, but being happy that Stafford has to go to Detroit is aimed at him, not our society.

I don't worship jocks, but I wonder what makes you despise them so much.
  • guess i'm an idiot
na na na na ... na na na na ... hey hey hey ... goodbye ... it was fun to watch the back and forth in jax with Matt and Noshawn ... i'm a gator but those two are ture class acts.
  • Leaving GA for Detroit
Housing prices are really cheap in Detroit now. The City is bull dozing houses left vacant because no one is even buying real estate tax bills.
  • Only an idiot
Only an idiot cares about this post. If you're actually paying attention to this news piece, you're a worthless piece of meat to society. Woopidy Doooo.
  • Matthew Stafford
He may have left early, he may have made millions, and he actually is a pretty worthless quarterback. But he'll never EVER live one day in Detroit. Work in the practice facility, and play on Ford field, yes. But live there...NEVER.
  • If he had stayed for his senior year, he would have likely still ended up in Detroit, or worse, Oakland. What two awful franchises.
  • For $78 Million...
With $41 million guaranteed, you can shave my head, wax my legs, and use me as a surfboard.
  • Stafford
I am a big Dawg fan and I can't blame Stafford for going pro. I felt the same way about Herschel. Multi-millions guaranteed... If he blows out his knee in college he gets zip, zero, nada.

He won't have to live there, you know that Neal. Well, until the feds outlaw fractional ownership anyway...
