OBAMA'S VISIT TO THE LATIN AMERICAN PRINCIPAL'S OFFICE

Since Neal's not here today, (he and Royal are taking a day of vacation to play in a charity golf tournament), he's decided to hand over the reins to his staff. So here are some thoughts from associate producer Cristina "Precious" "Pumpkin" Gonzalez...

Latin America is a region that has largely been ignored by Washington for quite some time. Bill Clinton wasn't all that popular with our neighbors to the south. And while there was a glimmer of hope for George Bush, September 11th pretty much changed everything .. including a focus on rebuilding relations with Latin America. And when it comes to Barack Obama, they are hoping to capitalize on his star-power, play into his leftist sympathies, and emphasize his weakness on the world stage. This is the America they have been waiting for.

This recent gathering of 34 nations of the Americas turned into nothing short of a Latin American bitch-fest. Sorry. There is no other way to say it. And Barack Obama just sat there and took it. Let's do a little recap of Obama's visit to the Fifth Summit of the Americas in Trinidad and Tobago:

-The first leftist thug up to bat was the president of Bolivia Evo Morales. He took this occasion to accuse the United States of orchestrating a plot to assassinate him. That's always a good way to start things off ... being put on the defensive by an anti-capitalist, radical socialist. We are talking about a man whose first order of business was to hang a portrait of Che Guevara in his presidential suite. Seriously.

-It wouldn't be a socialist slug-fest without Hugo the Horrible. Venezuela's Hugo Chavez had two magical moments with Obama. The first would be the infamous hand shake. Did you see the pictures? It was more the handshake between two pals about to play a backyard game of basketball, rather than an exchange between two radically differing nations. I mean, where do you start with this thug? Just a few months ago, he called Barack Obama an ignoramus. A few years ago, he called President Bush "the devil." We are talking about a guy who believes there is more democracy in Cuba than there is in the United States. (Even though the US technically isn't a democracy .. but you catch my drift.) Not to mention his shenanigans with Russia and Iran. Oh and then there is the tiny fact that he has nationalized virtually every industry in his country. But hey, if Barack Obama wants to pal around with Hugo like they are new-found friends .. I just hope he realizes the message he is sending around the world. At least he didn't bow to the guy like he did just a few weeks ago with the King of Saudi Arabia. But are you starting to see the picture here? Just think about the messages Obama has sent within the past few weeks .. how do you think he is making America look on the world stage?

-And since Obama and Hugo are now buds, Chavez decided that he wanted to present Obama with a token of his love. He couldn't have waited until after the summit. Or sent it with a Christmas card. Sitting at the table during talks, Chavez thought that it would be a great time to walk over and publically present Obama with a copy of Eduardo Galeano's The Open Veins of Latin America; Five Centuries of the Pillage of a Continent. This is the Latin American Bible explaining why capitalism and countries, like the United States, are responsible for the state of Latin America. Clearly, this was a symbolic move to undermine the president and the United States. How can Hugo get away with this? Because he knows that Obama won't do a darn thing about it. Hugo knows he can impress his tyrant friends by pulling a little stunt like this. Hugo and Fidel and Putin had a conference call later that day where they sat around smoking cigars and snickering.

-Perhaps the most embarrassing moment was the 50-minute diatribe Obama endured from Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega. Do the Sandinistas and the Contras ring a bell? Yep .. he's baaaack. Ortega was re-elected in 2006, and he took this opportunity to get a few things off his chest. I can sum it up for you pretty quickly: capitalism is evil and the US is responsible for the plight of the Americas. He used phrases like "terroristic US aggression" and "suffocating US economic policies." He describes Cuba as a country "whose crime has been that of fighting for independence, fighting for sovereignty of the peoples." And rather than stand up for his country, Obama simply thanked Ortega for not blaming him personally for things that happened when Obama was young. That's it?? Poor Ronald Reagan is rolling in his grave.

So what can we conclude from all of this? This was nothing more than a political photo-op for Latin American leaders, and a chance for them to roast America for their perceived history of neglect and abuse. I say photo-op because Barack Obama is extremely popular with the Latin American people. That's why these Latin American leaders made a point to deride America, but not Obama .. they know that having Obama on their side will only boost their own popularity. He is a pawn, folks. He is being used to boost personal popularity. Meanwhile, Obama's "listen and learn" approach gives them the luxury to hate on America in a way that makes them look stronger and America weaker.

What others are saying

  • Jason
"Aggression leads to aggression..." You're right, aggression on their part does, and should, lead to aggression on our part. Good point! BTW, You're an a$$.
  • Patriotism
Am I the only one who remembers, way back when Bill Clinton was president, Hillary said that we could not call ourselves patriots if we disagreed with the president?
And then, during the Bush presidency, she insisted that we had a right to disagree?
    And now we don't again?
Keep swaying with the breeze, all you Liberals. Hillary had it right the second time.
  • Listening may = bad
Listening is an important part of communication. However, at some time it MUST come to speaking in order to become communication.

President Obama's problem is that he LISTENS to people blame America for all their problems, then he SPEAKS the same message.

The Contras may have been funded by America, but they were Nicaraguans that disagreed with the Sandinistas.

To put the Hugo Chavez (Hugo's ghost?) issue into perspective. Mr. Chavez has insulted OUR President multiple times, and denigrates our country at any given opportunity. Our Presidents reaction is identical to the bullied that buddy up to the bullies. Our President "listens" and then AGREES.
  • Mikey
Diplomacy, diplomacy, diplomacy. Dont you think we've been down that road before??Do you even know who Hugo Chavez is??or what he stands for??? Even if i agreed that we needed to talk to this loon Obamalangadingdong is sure as hell NOT the person to be doing it. I can just hear him now, how much do you need Hugo, just a second while i get my checkbook. Diplomacy does work if you have competent people negotiating.
  • Our first non-documented President
wants the world to know we care about them. And not about the U.S.

He's a coward. He has no backbone. He has no balls. He's a quiche-eating liberal that least resembles an American. He makes Carter look like Rambo.

Now I feel like Michelle Dumbama--not proud at all to be an American.
  • Listening=bad
    >>Most of you seem to think that actually taking the time to listen to someone who disagrees with you is a bad thing.>>but it might actually be a good idea to admit that some of America's policies in central and south America have been executed purely for our own interest an and not theirs,>> However, shouting "we're number one!" so loud and so long that you can't hear anything else is unhealthy, counter productive, and will ultimately lead to us not being number one anymore.<<<

If that were the case.... We don't do this. All I ever see America do these days is apologize to others no matter how much we give, almost as if we have guilt for being the best. That mentality is exhibited by the libs all the time.
  • Re:listening = bad?
I'm with you mikey. I'm not an Obama supporter, I've voted Republican my entire life; but I see ZERO harm in opening up dialog with adversaries. But, we do need to get over this "Blame America First" attitude. We've done much more "right" than we have "wrong!"
  • listening = bad?
I think this thread goes a long way toward explaining why the conservative movement has fallen out of favor with the masses. Most of you seem to think that actually taking the time to listen to someone who disagrees with you is a bad thing. good luck winning the electorate back with that attitude.

So what if Obama hears them out, seems like that is part of the job. He didn't give Chavez our army. He wasn't wearing a snazzy little beret. Would you prefer he had thrown a fit and stormed out of the room? Perhaps he could have pulled off a shoe and pounded it on the podium?

Also, and I'm sure I run the risk of being called an unpatriotic commie elitist (or maybe even a liberal), but it might actually be a good idea to admit that some of America's policies in central and south America have been executed purely for our own interest an and not theirs, sometimes to the detriment of the locals. I will not go so far as to say that "it's all our fault" as you are accusing Obama of saying, but to deny history is dangerous.

We know America is great, we live here. They know America is great, hence the constant stream of immigrants. However, shouting "we're number one!" so loud and so long that you can't hear anything else is unhealthy, counter productive, and will ultimately lead to us not being number one anymore.
  • Club
I know! Was just waiting (baiting) for a lib to bring it up. ;)
  • @Joyce
Joyce says, "Stand up and say something nice about us every once in awhile! Oh but then he is not proud of his country."

    ------

Joyce, you need to be corrected. OBozo and his wife ARE proud of this country. That "proud feeling" started around Nov. 4th or so for the first time.
  • New Approach?
The question is can Obama reopen doors that were closed due to America's history of interference in the Americas? Chavez is just another in a history of dictators that come and go, but we need to learn to better handle these dictators and support trade with those nations who are actual functioning republics without interfering or lecturing our ideals. This has been an issue that we have not been very successful with since Monroe.
  • Here I go again
I'm curious what Obama was supposed to do. Punch Chavez in the face? Not go? By going to the summit, he became the center of attention, taking the focus off the Axis of Imbeciles (Cuba, Venezuela, Bolivia). We have a number of critical allies in the region -- Brazil, Chile, Argentina. Should we just ignore them or, worse, let them fall under the sway of Chavez?

Boy, what has happened to the conservatives and libertarians? You guys used to think diplomatic relations were a good thing.
  • What should he do?
There are ways to get your point across without doing a "sez you". And you can shake someone's hand without looking like you are meeting your hero. It's all body language.

Stand up and say something nice about us every once in awhile! Oh but then he is not proud of his country.

I'd like to see any of you stand up in a debate against Ann Coulter, then talk.
  • Jimbo's Right
    Jimbo's right.

Smoking pot does not equal dolt, or unsuccessful, or addict, or loser, et al.

I AM the quintessential conservative and I smoke pot. It is probably the biggest issue that I am in disagreement over with my political affiliation.

Honestly, it should be legalized, regulated and taxed. That takes the HUGE profit out of it, reducing crime and terrorist funding, makes it more safe (for those that are going to do it anyway), generates revenue, and allows us to use the billions we spend annually on the failed drug war for better uses.

Christina, your write-up on Latin America is terrific and I concur that you should be featured more often.
  • What do you want?
Again I ask the question: What would you have Obama do? Go to the Latin American Forum and engage in a round of Snaps with these petty little dictators? Hugo and the rest take shots at us because it garners attention. Having Obama say "Oh, Yeah? Sez You!" just puts us on their level.

And no, I can't imagine being compared to Ann Coulter would be taken as a compliment.
  • Every time
i watch and listen to 'O' at these conventions getting his butt kicked by the [other] leaders of these countries that hate us, it reminds me of the scared little puppy turning belly up at the first indication of conflict instead of acting like the President of the United States and defending America. Pathetic.
  • Cristina
Right, white, bright and outta sight. What a great combination.
  • @By Mark @ 04/20/09 09:06:23 AM
Ann Coulter watch out? You called her Ann Coulter????? LOL. Dollars to donuts she didn't consider that a compliment. It'd be like if I called you Hannity -- wait, you probably do think that's a compliment.

    ....ann coulter watch out....lol.....
  • Seek first to Understand
This is classic '7 habits of Highly Effective People' at work here.

Seek first to understand - ie - listen.

    Then be understood.

Its actually a very intelligent approach to life. We should all try it!
  • Hey Jimbo
Sounds to me like your trying to justify your own personal relationship with pot. And can you define "massively successful".. sounds rightous dude! You get upset when people equate losers with smoking pot yet you have no trouble equating right wingers as people who attend church. Grab your bong, have another toke and again, leave the posting to the big boys. Git r done! There is that better.
  • Latin America
    Excellent read..and oh so accurate!
  • Jimbo
Why don't you go back to smoking your meth and leave others alone, twit.
  • Jason
You're a twit. Plain and simple. Why don't you go kiss the royal rumpus of a dictator on your own and leave us out of it.
  • I agree on a Cristina's Corner Idea
I'm really enjoying your coverage and analysis of Latin America.

I worked in the Atlanta area for a while prior to moving to Spain a couple years ago. (It's a long, complicated story)

CNN in Spanish in the U.S. is as bad as it gets when it comes to biased media, (but their anchor-people are hotter.) Here in Spain, I get both CNN+ (Europe's version, which is worse) and CNN UK version in English, which the local British expats that I know call Commie/Crappy News Network. They keep telling me I should sign up for SkyNews.

Anyways, I thought this was interesting:
In the space of just a week, Evo Morales went from threatening to commit suicide by starving himself to death, to suddenly caring whether or not someone else was trying to kill him.
  • Copyleft
    >Good thing Obama's in charge, and not the moron who wrote this swill.<

You're right Copyleft, you are a moron.
  • Christina's corner
Great job informing us about Obama's visit to Latin America.

You should have a regular segment on the nuze called "Christina's Corner".
  • Barry's visit
    Christina,

Very well said. I applaud your abilities to "take over" for Neal. Me thinks he needs to look over his shoulder. You're a keeper!
  • Constitution
What scares me about Obama and his "I don't want to talk politics about things that happened before I was born" nonsense is that he actually believes that the history of all the United States' leaders and founders means nothing because it happened before he was around.

He has shown on many occasions he doesn't either know or acknowledge the role that America has played in making sure the world is a safer place. He, instead, denigrates us.

I guess since the Constitution was put in place "before he was born" it doesn't hold any legal or historical water either and should not be recognized.
  • Nicaragua
The president of Nicaragua wasn't complaining when we practically rebuilt his whole country after hurricane mitch, and when i say we i mean me and the rest of the army, navy and marines that spent christmas in a tent for them.
  • American Role
Look folks no matter what we do we will never be loved in "Latin" America. We are seen sometimes justifiably as the cause for many of their modern ills, just like Spain was before the 2nd World War. Remember “Gunboat Diplomacy”? Maybe I should sign this as the "Ugly American". To quote that book "A mysterious change seems to come over Americans when they go to a foreign land. They isolate themselves socially. They live pretentiously. They're loud and ostentatious." Ahhh…we now reap what we sowed during the 1950s, 1960s, & 1970s when we saw ourselves as our brother’s keeper and everyone’s better.
  • the book...
actually, Chavez was just returning the copy that Obama had lent him. Chavez is still borrowing his copy of "Rules for Radicals."
  • good thing Obama's in charge
    for whom?
No, we're not asking that this "president" should only meet with sycophants, we're asking that he stand up for America, instead of trying to befriend the schoolyard bullies so they won't take his lunch money. They're still going to take his money and beat him up - you do realize that don't you? Problem is I get my ass kicked in the process too and that ticks me off.
As far as I'm concerned, there is only one political-leader-sycophant in the world at this time - any guesses?
I'm getting a little tired of his speaking on my behalf to the rest of the world that I'm some kind of monster that needs to be put in my place by the world that is not America. I'm tired of him selling us out.
No, it is not a good thing for me that this useless man is in charge, because he has not taken charge and never will.
  • blaming others
Well, blaming others for your own deficiencies is certainly in line with Obama's philosophy. NEWSFLASH!! Latin America is a cesspool because it is full of Latin Americans. Of course this is what Obama and his fellow travelers want for the U.S. too. He looks like a limp wristed panty-waist to the entire world, while he puts patriotic Americans on notice that they are now considered potential terrorists.

Obama is waging open war upon the American people. He needs to be expelled from office by any means.
  • Copy at it again
Ever hear of somewhere in the middle? We can rebuild without kissing butt. Hard for you to realize till after you wipe your nose.

"moron who wrote this swill"? Just trying to stir the pot eh? She has more brains than you obviously.
  • More contradictions
Sounds like the columnist wishes we still WERE ignoring Latin America.

Seriously, you start off talking about "rebuilding relations" with Central and South America, and then spend the rest of the article whining about how evil and stupid all their leaders are. I guess the President should only meet with foreign leaders who grovel and suck up to us, eh? Yeah, that's a smart program.

Good thing Obama's in charge, and not the moron who wrote this swill.
  • we're the best country in the world
I was just up in western Canada listening to one of my customers talk sh!t about America, except I didn't just take it on the chin like Obama. I told the guy Canada was basically America Jr and that they needed to get over their huge inferiority complex.
  • hey Killer
"Hugo, stick to smoking pot and watching the Daily Show and leave the comments to the big people."

I love how "smoking pot" makes one a automatic loser. I know MANY people who enjoy pot that are staunch conservatives and libertarians and are anything but losers. In fact they are probably massively more successful than people like "killer" and the churchy right wingers.

So, "killer" et all, I say, enjoy your Natural Lite and Nascar and leave the comments to people who have thought out TRUE conservative and libertarian positions.
  • Killer!
Excellent post. I needed your help yesterday arguing with the Politico crowd about the purpose for the Tea Parties. They refuse to say they are any thing other than Anti-Obama, Anti-black.

I pointed out that would make it easier for them if that were true. Total crickets on that point.
  • grow up America
But Jason, we ARE so great and they are so bad.
That's not arrogant mentality, that's fact.
  • @Killer
Good post. The man is in way over his head, it is clear. Let's face it, this is the first job that he has had that he actually has to start and finish. He can't go search for a new job in 2 years once people realize that he really is an empty suit. He has been able to do this his whole life - move to the next gig, while his star is still hot, before anyone realizes that he is just a phony empty suit poser. We've all seen these types in the workplace. Right when it's time for the "golden boy" to produce, off to the next job it is, and the cycle continues on and on, never being able to be pinned down for anything.

Since he is in way over his head, he also reminds of the typical person in a meeting who really knows nothing, but just bobs his head up and down and says, "I agree.", Yes, " when someone speaks. He doesn't want to look like a fool and say I don't understand, but can't offer anything of significance because he is clueless on the specifics of the issues.
  • Sigh...
We need a commercial like old environmental commercial with the crying Native American, but instead with a CGI Ronald Reagan shedding a tear looking over the White House. It's shameful that our president has, to put it crudely, no balls.

Nice article though Christina, tell Neal to give you the final hour of the show one week!
  • Thanks for the insite
Christina, great insight into the gang of 34. Would love to hear more from you.
  • Not My Prez
I am so very tired of Obama making general statement using the American people as his "fall guy". He does not now, nor has he ever spoken for me. I have my own voice and it screams, "OBAMA IS NOT MY PRESIDENT!"

    Great blog!
  • @Jason
Yes, showing cowardice and being an appeasing peacenik has worked so well in history. Get a grip, you bedwetting dolt.
  • President Doormat... er, Obama
    --Today's Haiku--

    Clueless chickensh*t

    Lets dictators eat his lunch

    Welcome back, Carter
  • wait a minute
wait a minute, i just received a news report. obama just learned that peru wants to build an atomic bomb. he says the cia is certain that the peruvians have bought yellow cake from nigeria.

wait a minute, there's more. the peru air force has crop dusters designed to spray anthrax over american cities.

wait a minute. there's more. we're going to invade!

and i thought he was a leftist weenie. i like him now. he's great for america!
  • EXCELLENT COLUMN; lefties fail to see the bigger picture
Cristina's column was thoughtful and eloquent, much more so than Neal's writing (and I'm sure he would admit this so it is not an insult, I love Neal's own writing too).

First off the bat, I would not even say this if Hugo's Ghost had anything better to do than be the first poster and try to insult the author, but he is a FULL-BLOWN idiot. If all he got out of Cristina's post was the handshake bit than I guess there really is no hope for Obamidons (Obama+myrmidon=Hugo). Hugo, stick to smoking pot and watching the Daily Show and leave the comments to the big people.

How about Obama's complete lack of leadership skills. He really is nothing more than a silly photo-op robot who thrives in the limelight. Aside from his Spendulous bill, the only thing that the public knows this man has done is travel, travel, TRAVEL.

The PRESIDENT you fools elected looks like a kid who is too afraid (or unconcerned) to defend his own country when totalitarian toolboxes initiate the smacktalk.

I also notethe irony of Obama's refusal to call religious zealots who strap bombs to mentally retarded people and send them to busstops "terrorists," but he does not protest the description of America as "terroristic and aggressive." Way to make our country look united, TOTUS.

Fortunately, it is quite obvious that much of the country is feeling a bit sick for having put Obama in a position that he is doubtlessly unable to fill. Don't try to contend that statement either, the vitriolic denouncements of the tea parties and the knee-jerk defensive postures struck by Obama apologists says all we need to hear.
  • Disgrace
The man is a dsgrace to this country, period. He has this obsessive impulse to be liked by everyone. As a result, he allows these two-bit dictators spit in our country's face without sticking up for the country. We saw it in his Apology Tour thorugh Europe a few weeks ago. I recall reading a news article dated back to 1990 (NYT archives) about the 'First Black President of Harvard Law Review". They interviewed a couple of his fellow members on the Review team, and what one member said hit the nail on the head. Remember, this comment was made in 1990 following his appointment ot Prez of Harvard law Review. She said, meaning it as a compliment, that he is very good at telling both opposing sides that he understands them and having both sides thinking that they have his vote on what the particular issue is after talking to him. That's what he is like today. He tells his audience whatever they want to hear, whatever he thinks will make the audience like him best. If it means lampooning America, so be it. If it means being tough, so be it.

Bottom line is the man can't make a decision. Hell, I was watching Meet the Depressed yesterday, and David Gregory pilled a quote from the NYT I believe, which nailed it. It basically said that Obama eventually has to take a stand on something, and said that we know that he wants to be liked, is good at giving speeches and telling people what they want to hear, he wants people to be happy with him, but he has to take a position on soemthing eventually. But How, the idiot has never made an executive decision in his life.
  • Book
The part that kills me, that book is suddenly flying off the shelves, every leftie must be buying it. So we'll hear quotes from it as talking points here in just a few days.
  • Grow Up America!
It's about time someone took steps for Peace! Agression leads to Agression! I think the U.S. should adopt some policies from that book given to Obama and getting this country involved in the World community, instead of our arrogance of how we are so great and they are so bad mentallity.
  • Cristina
Ann Coulter Look-out! You go girl...Lov ya longtime!
  • Cristina is not lacking...
insight, logic, or the ability to express cogent thought. Wow. Neal ought to think twice about being absent... Cristina fills in for him a little too well...
  • Handshake
It's not shaking hands that concerns me, it's what goes on behind closed doors!
  • Christina
Excellent work! I appreciate your analysis of the Latin American summit, and of the Cuban situation. I have good friends who are also of Cuban descent, who came here as children to escape Castro, and I know they echo your sentiments. In his first months in office, Obama has shown himself to be hopelessly naive, immature and w-a-a-y over his head. He's very good at RUNNING for office, but he never had any experience at BEING in office. We said this over and over during the campaign, but the MSM outshouted us. Now we all have to pay.
  • we don't care
we don't care what other people think. we just care that they do what their told to do. and if we kill a few of them. its for democracy. wait a minute, that's got me to laughing. us, striving for democracy in south america, gawd its got me to laughing out loud.

neal, i love it. thank you. when i'm waking up, i could use a laugh. nothing make laugh as good as a LINO.
  • Hugo's Ghost
OBVIOUSLY you did not see the handshake. This was not a diplomatic greeting, it was truly a "two homies on the basketball court" shake. Find out what Christina is talking about before shooting off your mouth - er - fingers.
  • Chavez's Book
Somebody needs to give this guy "Atlas Shrugged".
  • Way to go...
Let me be the first to say (no offense Neal) that Cristina should write for this blog more often.
  • Handshake
OH MY GOD OBAMA SHOOK CHAVEZ' HAND!!! NONONONONONONO!!!

Quit yer whinin'-it's called being polite. Nixon shook Mao's hand, Reagan shook Gorbachev's hand and Donald Rumsfeld shook Saddam Hussein's hand.
