OBAMA'S IDEA OF TRIMMING GOVERNMENT SPENDING

Yesterday Barack Obama met with his cabinet members. The big story to get from this is the fact that Obama requested his cabinet agencies to trim a collective $100 million off their budgets.

Is it just me, or is anyone else slightly insulted by this?

Come on, folks! Let's get real here. Obama says that he is going to go line by line and streamline the budget .. and all he can come up with is $100 million? Folks, we are talking about a man who has proposed a budget worth $3.6 trillion. We are talking about a government that currently holds a $1.2 trillion deficit. And he asks his entire cabinet to trim $100 million?

Think about it like this ... that is 1/36,000 of the money Obama plans to spend next year. Or as this article puts it, "if the budget were a yardstick, the administration would be proposing to shorten it by 1/1000 of an inch. That's 25.4 microns, or about half the width of a human hair." I think I can do a better job of showing you just how little money this is. Let's say that you are a 300 pound lardass. You want to lose weight. How much weight would you lose if you reduced your massive quivering bulk by the same percentage Obama is proposing reducing next year's spending? Answer: Just a hair over 13/100ths of one stinking ounce. (0.13333 oz.) Wow! Now you don't have to ask for that seat belt extender any more!

So he says that the money is going to add up. Ok, so when is he going to request more cuts? Are there plans for more cuts? Is this just lip-service? What focus group told the Obama administration that $100 million was the magic number that will restore confidence in the American people? "If you show the people that you can cut $100 million from the budget, they are going to believe that you are handling their tax dollars with care!"

For everyone who got out there on tax day and attended a rally, whether it was a tea party or a FairTax rally ... is this what you wanted? Is this really going to bridge the "confidence gap" that the Obama administration speaks of?

Yeah, didn't think so.

So now we are going to go through a quick list of things that you could get for $100 million.

  • $100 million is the equivalent of 402,000 iPods
  • 2.16 million barrels of oil
  • 4,500 Toyota Prius cars
  • 5,000,000 eyebrow waxing appointments for Nancy Pelosi ... and a Brazilian thrown in just to get her out of the salon.
  • Less than one-quarter of the budget increase that Congress awarded to itself.
  • 4 percent of the military aid the United States sends to Israel.
  • Less than half the cost of one F-22 fighter plane.
  • 7 percent of the federal subsidy for the money-losing Amtrak passenger rail system.
  • 1/10,000th of the government's operating budgets for Cabinet agencies, excluding the Iraq and Afghan wars and the stimulus bill.

So .. $100 million might mean something to you, but it means absolutely nothing to government. Obama's silly little publicity stunt with this $100 million nonsense shows either how out of touch he is with federal budget realities, or it shows how ignorant he believes the American people to be. You choose.

What others are saying

  • the big sale
Think about it this way: You want to buy something that costs $100,000.00 - yep, 100 big ones - but you think it's overpriced. You walk in to negotiate with the sales guy - and he makes the magnanimous gesture offering you a coupon for $3 bucks off! Are you grateful, or pissed off?

I'm with Boortz - the only two possible conclusions are 1) Obama is cynical and dishonest, trying to fool people into thinking he is fiscally conservative, or 2) he is operating short of a full deck.
  • Pelosi and a Brazilian!!?!?!?
    Brain Bleach, STAT!!!!!
  • Community organizer at work.
    Jimmy Carter II
  • It would make sense if
This would be a great idea if Obama was asking them to make $100 million in cuts every month. Now that's change I can believe in!
  • trimming government spending
At first I thought it was a misprint and then I was insulted. Now I am embarrassed to think at least one of your suggestions is correct.
  • I spent my savings
Chuck. I just spent my savings on a cookie. It was chocolate chocolate chip.

MMM MMMMM. maybe they can cut another billion and I can buy a sandwich.
  • Queen!!!
Knock it off! That's just so --- wrong.

Whenever we do budgets we always ask for more than we really need cause we figure something is going to get cut. It's what we call our "throwaways". So I'm sure this 100m (does that make it look small?) wasn't anything that hurt them.
  • Probably planned
This cut was probably planned from the beginning and was included in the original budget. It was planned to manipulate the populous to think that the administration is trying to reduce spending. Another slight of hand move.
  • another analogy
Assuming that there are roughly 180 million taxpayers in this country, Obama is going to trim your $20,000 tax bill by about 55 cents. What will you do with all that money?
  • Nancy Pelosi gets a Brazilian? Yggh!
Egad. How about a boob lift for those ginormous knee-warmers of hers?
  • Trimming Spending
Hey, we should encourage any movement in the a positive direction. So, I'll say it: This is a good first baby step.

Now, let's get on with more... many, many more baby steps in the same direction.

If this was an average American household, which according to Wiki earned $50,233 in 2007, then this would be the equivalent of trimming $1.40 off the annual household budget. Or, saving just over 10 cents a month.

That's good. But it'll take a lot more trimming to change the deficit into a surplus, to eventually get us out of debt. (Which is the wisest end goal.)
  • REDUCTION??
when you have to rely on riots to do your shopping you just can't grasp the idea of money......
  • Maybe It Is Time For Chapter 11 for The Government
I wonder where the average citizen can see the budget of every department of the federal government on a line by line? There probably is not such an animal.

Perhaps it is time for the federal government to go through chapter 11 to shed all of these ridiculous programs. During the Clinton years, the government was shutdown except for essential services. Why not start with that as a foundational basis for cutting? If you were non-essential at that time, you are non-essential now.

    Thank you
  • Math
A micron is 1/1000 of a millimeter, not an inch. 1/1000 of an inch is a mil. Microns are significantly smaller than mils. Just sayin'.
  • Raptor is $137.5 million - wiki
$100M is actually 72.7% of the cost of a brand new Raptor...not "Less than half the cost of one F-22 fighter plane."

And since they're cutting the F22 program, they should be able to save much more :-P

    One Big Ass Mistake America
  • Brazilian Pelosi
Oh God in heaven, I think I just threw up a little in my mouth. Only thing worse would be viewing Hilary, Janet Napolitano and Janet Reno giving each other sponge baths. *Shudder*
  • Looks like
Does anyone think this idea was hatched right after the tea parties?
    Kind of coincidental.
  • Insulting...why be surprised...
That is all this President like to do is insult this country every chance he gets!

It should prove interesting that he has said that he is going to cut government agencies that are ineffecent and wasteful. That should be all, it not most of the government agencies that exist today...Wow that will be a way to balance the budget...Yeah, how many campaign promises has he already broken.
  • Toilet Paper Rescue Plan
I estimate that Obama and Pelosi could save at least 100 million by reducing the federal government toilet paper usage to one or two squares per sitting. I am coining this asset relief plan as the Toilet Paper Asset Relief Program - TPaRP.

I am so looking forward to closing my business and joining the growing public service industry - I love spending money - I love spending other people's money even more.
  • Keep laughing
but we will have to wait and see how this shakes out. Yes, we all laugh at this so-called cut. However, realize that the typical Obozo voter doesn't have a clue.

The media will just headline the articles with "OBama demands that Congress trim $100 MILLION from budget". The TV morons will talk about how Obama is trying to cut waste from the budget and save the taxpayer. Do you think the typical mouthbreathing Dumbocrat will have a clue? My guess the average Democrat voter's analysis will resort to this, "100 hunnet million, dat's a lot of cash."

Look at the spin coming from the WH already: " He will challenge his Cabinet to cut a collective $100 million in the next 90 days,"!!! get that?? Challenge...ooh.. what a challenge!

To you Obama voters: at what point do you morons realize that this man holds you for absolute mindless fools? What will it take? How pathetic is this - OBozo sees the success of the tea parties, and comes back and thinks he will cut 1/36,000th of the budget and that will make him look like a true fighter against govt waste.
  • Polital maneuvering.
This guy is a pro. He, or at least his advisers know that the majority of the American public is completely brain dead(how else could Obama have one an election), and that they will see this gesture as a recommitment to change and fiscal responsibility...

Someone with even the slightest reasoning power can see this for what it is.
I am happy we are saving money, but this is comparable to my wife maxing out my credit cards(not that I have any) and then giving me a coupon for 10% off sub at subway.

Thanks for the cuts, but I'd rather you just stop spending all of my money to begin with.
  • Budget Cuts
Im sure prezbo is tossing and turning in his presidential crib, agonizing over the pain of inflicting such draconian budgetary slashes. Oh, the hay that will be made of this in campain '12.
  • i thought the timing of this announcement was interesting. he made it on the same week as the Tea Parties took place. And I thought they didn't care about the protest of the white racist homophobic morons?? They must have cared at least a little to address government spending just 2 days later. That just gives me satisfaction.
  • Here's an axiom libs won't understand
The amount of your liberty is inversely proportional to the size of your government.

"Trimming" or "teabagging" - -it makes no difference. Ultimately, reduction in the size and scope of government should be our goal. PrezBo is delusional if he thinks the people of this country are buying into his lies.
  • It's confirmed
this idiot has no concept of numbers and magnitudes.
I'll bet that he thinks pointing a flashlight at the sun makes it shine brighter too.
  • @By LiberalHater @ 04/21/09 09:50:05 AM
How much of your alone time do you spend thinking about other men's sex lives? Put your pants back on, you creepy pervert.

DrJ -- LOL on small numbers vs large

....hey, my security code starts with WMD. so that's where they are!!!
  • Boortz fail
Your fat guy analogy sucked, Boortz. The yardstick analogy was far easier to picture.

    @By Mike @ 04/21/09 09:13:22 AM
Before you gouge your eyes out, I could be wrong but I don't think you actually saw Nancy Pelosi post-Brazillion, you only pictured her that way. So blinding yourself won't help and in fact will probably make that image -- that picture you have in your head of a nude, hairless, smooth Nancy Pelosi smiling at you like the Joker -- may only be more difficult to replace. I'm here to help.

Obama should be asked if he knew in advance what specific cuts he asked his cabinet to make. If he says yes, why were they mistakenly included in the original budget? What changed to exclude them? If he says no, how did he arrive at that number $100m? He should either explain his "mistake" in his original budget or justify his reasoning behind the 100m figure.
  • Reminds me of Prez Clinton
I think it was Clinton that showed up in the White House Lawn with a pallet full of "laws" that they deemed could be removed from the books declaring he was making government smaller.
  • Cost Cutting
First of all with the way Washington has chastized industry I have to laugh at a $100MM challenge. Secondly, as someone who has more than 20 experience in corporate finance I see his paltry effort to reduce cost contemptable. Most of the companies that I have worked for in the past have strived for minimally 10% cost decreases annually. These cost reduction can be achieved ither through reduced spending or through operational efficiencies. But then again, think of government working efficiently. In the past I had actually challenged my controllers to reduce cost by 10% over previous year's actual spending despite double diget headwinds. I could probably find $100MM in his cabinet departments in about 2 hours.
  • Obama is brilliant
This makes PERFECT sense though! Afterall, 100 is a big number. 3.6 is a small number. Most who voted for obama dont take the time to notice the million vs. trillion is missing some major moola of the billions category.
  • Huckabee
I felt the same way that every else here feels about the spending cuts, but I caught The Huckabee Report on the radio while driving to work. He pointed out that it didn't seem like much compared to the trillions being spent but at least it was a start.
  • Copyleft and Hugo's Ghost
Neal, please don't put anything relating to the word "trim" in your news. It confuses people like Copyleft and Hugo's Ghost. They can't relate. They have never seen trim before.
  • A Lesson for Gibbs
Robert Gibbs said "Only in Washington is $100 million not a lot of money." Let's teach Mr. Gibbs how much money $3.6 trillion is. It's $100 million a day for almost 100 years. Maybe that's enough to wipe that smug smile off his face.
  • Budget Cutting
If only Obama would have taken back the billions of TARP dollars the banks wanted to return to him he could have spared his Cabinet the humiliating task of trimming a measly $100,000,000 from their budgets.

No candy bars for a week....

    Bummer.

    -
  • O still doesn't get it.
Fair or Consumer tax and abolish the IRS for starters. That should make a huge dent.
  • "higher education"
Apparently math isn't a requirement to graduate from Harvard.
  • Budget cuts
The reason Obama starts with just $100 million is obvious. He will quickly find a few "Republician" projects to cut and then claim success.
  • 100 Million - maybe per agency per day
Well Done - as long as each of his agency heads cuts $100 million per day - and repeats that feat every day for the remainder of his term. My math tells me that if each cabinet level official (I think there are 12) were to cut $100 million each day, we would save $1.2 billion per day - repeated 365 days a year for the remainder of the term would come to somewhere in the neighborhood 1.5 trillion - or about a quarter of the deficit for this year only - over a period of almost 4 years.

We need to get rid of these politicians that think we are so ignorant that they can take one gallon of water out of the oceans of the world and really make a difference in the tide levels tomorrow.
  • The $100 million question
The fact that the president mentioned the amount of $100 million in a seemingly serious context is insulting. This is pocket change to the government. It's like a family who spends $36,000 per year saving one dollar. Or, on the positive side, if you make $36,000 a year, it's like getting a $1 bonus.
I think that this was a direct insult to the tea party folks. We all know how the far left (including the media and the white house) has downplayed and demonized the tea party protests. I think that this is their sick attempt at trying to be funny and at mocking the requests of the tea party protesters. Little do they know (or perhaps care) that there were many at these tea parties who voted for them and put them into power. They've come to realize something that we had warned them about for years. I guess they just had to see it with their own eyes. Hopefully, the odds are that they won't vote for this kind of pocket "change" again.
  • Speaking of trimming....
Thanks for the visual of Queen Pelosi getting a brazilian. I will now gouge my eyes out with a rusty spoon.
  • Ridiculous
We should all follow Obama's lead and cut $2 out of our annual budget.
  • People can't visualize the numbers
Obama can get a lot of mileage with the $100 million mark because to most Americans, it sounds like a lot when compared to 3.6 trillion. They have no idea of the relativity between a Million and a Trillion. But they do understand that 100 is bigger than 3.6.

I think that all news should print the numbers all the way out:

Obama has charged his cabinet with reducing $100,000,000 from his $3,600,000,000,000 budget.
  • Budget cuts.
    Wimps.

State of Georgia took out $2.4 Billion for FY2010. And Curious George only wants $200 Million?

    Get real.
  • LOL @ John
    Good one!

I would also suggest they take back the raises Congress voted themselves. When was the last time any of us had a raise?
  • Pork
There are many places where the govt could trim some fat, but let me mention just one. I read earlier today that Obama is ready to sign the National Service bill. This will triple Ameri-Corps (started by B.Clinton) to the tune of $5.7 BILLION! Why do we need that much money for volunteers? Oh, and if you don't already know, both of our Georgia senators voted in favor of this. Can we get Herman Cain to make another run for the Senate?
  • I heard Obama on the radio yesterday talking about this
He said "we can do things like buy office supplies in bulk"

Yeah, between that and inflating our tires to the proper pressure we can solve all the nations problems...
  • The 100 million...
You know, in essence what PBO is proposing to do is to offset the 4 Trillion dollars he has added to the debt with 100 million dollars in "savings".

To put that in perspective, he has added an additional $12,000 in debt for every man, woman, and child in America, and is offering to reduce that $12k by 33 cents.

33 cents! Well...he did promise us CHANGE.
  • Incensed At Trimming
April 15th was a start. The outrageous idea of trimming only $100,000,000 from the budget is another step in the process.

I am indeed incensed by the proposal made in yesterday's cabinet meeting. I wrote the White House and our Federal reps last night and suggested they could start cutting costs by taking Pelosi's military transport that flies she and her family home and back. I also told the White House if they needed help trimming BILLIONS from the budget they could ask the tax payers and we could give them specific places to cut.

I suggest all write the White House and their elected representatives and tell them what they think.
