OBAMA'S FIRST TAX INCREASE

The mainstream media is up in arms ... Obama broke a campaign promise! Well, this wouldn't be the first time. But this one is a biggie in the eyes of many. During the campaign and even as president, Obama has promised not to raise taxes of any kind on families earning under $250,000 or individuals under $200,000.

But guess what? The tobacco tax increase went into effect yesterday, raising the tobacco tax nearly 62 cents on a pack of cigarettes to $1.01. And guess who is more likely to smoke: poor people. People making less than $200,000 a year. People who are government educated. Barack Obama supporters.

I love it. If the Obama administration is going to increase taxes to pay for government healthcare, at least let the poor and the ignorant people pay for it. They are the ones, after all, who put Barack Obama in the White House. They can afford to fund his dreams and schemes, one puff at a time.

By the way ... just why are poor people more likely to smoke? Because, generally speaking, they're dumber. As much as you might hate to admit it, intelligence translates into wealth in a free economy. Ignorant people just don't usually make the big bucks. Well ... there are athletes and entertainers ... but that's another story. The tests are out there ... smoking is a habit for the ignorant. Deal with it.

What others are saying

  • Afford Increase
But they can now afford that increase because Obama (mpbuh) gave them a $10 per week raise.

I'm sure that they were not going to use that $10 for something responsible like low-point beer and wifebeaters.
  • Tobacco Tax
I earn less than $70K and I do not smoke and I am not considered dumb. I have an MBA in Business Information Systems Management, B.S. in Public Accounting and an A.A. in Business Management.
  • Smoking tax
I appreciate this tax (WHAT?). Yes, I am (was) a smoker and wanted to quit and I have now: 1:I want to be healthier 2: I refuse to let the pres. use my money to fund his socialist programs. To "ATW": yes, alot of "rich" people voted for Obama (like the Wall Street execs)because they funneled his campaign money like many other lobbyist to get what they wanted (didn't work out too well for his agenda but thanks for the $) and lots of poor minorities who were uninformed sheep. I appreciate that those who voted along race lines instead of finding out the facts will finally have to pay their fair share. Their welfare checks will finally be taxed equally.
  • Neal's the dumb one
    Neal,
You are a "hypocrite". You lambaste those who you accuse of "Class Hatred" however, you are afflicted with your own acute affliction of the same.

You are IGNORANT of those who smoke in all topics regarding smokers. And your favorite argument of "Smokers are a burden on the HEALTH CARE SYSTEM which the Taxpayers are unjustly paying for."

Not as much as those who don't exercise or eat right Neal. Those with poor diets and lack of exercise are far more guilty than Smokers.

But that IS YOUR LOGIC, not mine. If the world was run under your rules Neal, Nancy Pelosi would seem like the FREE CAPITALIST POTENTATE that you so vociferously advocate.

I used to think you had some sense. But your incessant sophomoric assumptions about Smokers just reveals your true mental deficiency in your judgement skills.

You're truly a Dumb Ass and Abortion is MURDER. CHUMP!
  • Stupid trying to fix stupid.
If you want to smoke I don't care just don't do it around me. Government is just trying to use taxes to fix STUPID. Wait a minute!!! GOVERNMENT trying to fix STUPID. You know, that's a oxymoron!
  • Stupid Habit
Smoking is a stupid habit. Nothing positive comes from it. Much like drinking too much, eating burgers and fries, spending too much on clothes, smoking is an obviously unintelligent endeavor. It just happens to be a basic freedom. The government has no authority to impose taxation on a minority of citizens simply because their actions are unpopular. I hope their plans to fund this program fail miserably. They're not getting any more of my money. I quit.

    ---
    3d 12:56 smoke-free, 71 cigs not smoked, $24.32 saved, 5:55 life saved
  • Guess what neal
    Rand was a smoker

    You fail epically

Quit being just like those you supposedly hate and just supporting freedoms you approve of
  • You're being a hypocrite again
You can't play both sides Neal, can't cry about taxes and then support them on things you dislike, you're being just as bad as Obama and his ilk.

How bout we support a tax on things you enjoy doing, I'm sure you would cry and whine about that you hypocrite.

Or hey we could start a BMI tax, which you are obviously over, would you cry about that? Eating too much and not exercising is a choice as well which you seem to partake of.

You claim of supporting individual rights is obviously false.
  • wacky tobbackey tax
why bother legalizing marijuana when the government has a monopoly going on the tobbaco tax.way to go you two bit drug peddlers..kill em slow enough to collect more taxes..prolong death to make excuses to demand higher taxes on everything in order to pay for youre drug dealing ways..the people whom have little income or are on the state will continue to get their butts for free every time they get their government check in the mail.this is class warfare at its best and at its worst it pretty much is yet another step towards taking away anybodys incentive to work.especially when they see the individual on wellfare still smoking when they cannot afford to..fairtax..be fair to all or be gone..
  • By $mooth Operator @ 04/02/09 11:43:25 AM
    $mooth Operator:

Your demographic statistics may be correct, but they do not mean mine are false. Yes, you are right, the Hispanic and African-American population voted for Obama too, by a very lopsided margin. But it is also true that the wealthiest and most-educated voted for Obama too. I brought this evidence to light to refute the right wing talking point that only chronically unemployed and uneducated welfare queens and drug-addicted losers voted for Obama.

When you sarcastically state that those demographics are "something to be proud of", you are reflecting what is going to keep the republican party in the minority. Namely, you don't seem the slightest bit interested in getting votes from minority communities that are an ever-increasing part of the electorate. And in fact, you seem even embarrassed by the prospect. That kind of talk is not going to win you votes in the minority community.
  • consumer tax
I think a lot of people are missing the point, I could not care less if someone wants to smoke themselves to death. Free choice is a good thing even if some people do things with it that I anyway believe is silly.

The thing about this tax is that its a consumption tax, for example it taxes the end result, not your pay or production. That kind of taxation makes a ton more sense then say income tax or a business tax. Now if they just would disband income tax along with all the other production killing taxes and adopt the fair tax we might actually be able to have production again in the US.
  • Gotta agree with Jake here...
Also, there are therapeutic uses to smoking:

"For instance, recent studies suggest that smokers require less frequent repeated revascularization after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).Risk of ulcerative colitis has been frequently shown to be reduced by smokers on a dose-dependent basis; the effect is eliminated if the individual stops smoking. Smoking also appears to interfere with development of Kaposi's sarcoma, breast cancer among women carrying the very high risk BRCA gene, preeclampsia, and atopic disorders such as allergic asthma. A plausible mechanism of action in these cases may be nicotine acting as an anti-inflammatory agent, and interfering with the inflammation-related disease process, as nicotine has vasoconstrictive effects.

With regard to neurological diseases, a large body of evidence suggests that the risks of Parkinson's disease or Alzheimer's disease might be twice as high for non-smokers than for smokers. Many such papers regarding Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's Disease have been published."

So let's not be so quick to demonize smoking as something that only stupid, ignorant people do, because that is rather stupid. Peter Jennings smoked, Ayn Rand smoked (and yet you feel the urge to quote her rather often) also.

Sure, smoking is bad for your body, but it doesn't make a person stupid by any means.
  • Ignorant?
There are a few that break the mold...but lets be fair, Neal...if you are going to rail your listeners for misusing the word "racist." then you should ride that same rail by misusing "ignorant."

I find it very difficult to believe that the majority of smokers are unaware of the consequences of their smoking.

Call us careless if you like, but ignorant...nah. Though the class action lawyers may just use your definition for more frivolous lawsuits.
  • When I read this, I can only grimace when good people are folded into the mob mentality. Is this really the road we want to take our country down?

“It’s acceptable to heavily tax something the mob feels is bad. It is also acceptable for the government to decide what is best for us based on mob mentality.”

The government went down the most popular road to gain acceptance of single product tax increases: tobacco. The government will set the precedent that allows them to tax anything who does something the mob doesn’t agree with.

In a matter of weeks, the government has been able to target AIG executives for bonuses they are able to receive (contractually and legally). If they didn’t get the money back - tax it back. Now that these individuals were coerced by the mob, their sights are onto tobacco and you aren’t objecting.

What’s next? What happens when it is something more near and dear to you? Let’s just run down a list:

    Tobacco (check)
    Alcohol
Internet Usage (to stop online porn)
    Guns & Ammo

Then we will add items to satisfy the green movement:

    Private Airplanes
    SUVs and non-hybrid transportation
    Plastics

The list can go on and on and it probably will.

It doesn’t matter where you stand on smoking but what matters is government control based on a mob. Do you really think it will stop at cigarettes and cigars? Really?
  • I'd just like to point out that I enjoyed a cigg right before walking into my SAT test where I scored 1550 out of 1600, i wonder what Neal scored?
  • @ Crosscut Said
Smoke away you Obama voters. Smoke until you hemmorage your lungs out. America will be a better place without you.
    By Crosscut @ 04/02/09 12:01:30 PM

I trust that you are ONLY directing this at Obama voters? So do I assume that if one did NOT vote for the Messiah Moonbat and smokes is okie dokie in your book?
  • Smoking Tax
I guess the resulting crime from increased cigarette smuggling doesn't bother al a carte "libertarians" like you. The loss of jobs and tax revenue in places like Florida, where cigar Mfg is big business, doesn't seem to faze him either. You have a home in FL, right Neal? Pure genius.

Of course, the increased taxes will divert spending from other areas of the economy, especially in poor areas. Then we will see more lobbying for increased spending on inner cities and welfare.

A tax on any of us is a tax on all of us. Don't you know that Neal? Or has your immature jihad against (legal) tobacco left you bereft of critical thinking skills.

BTW - Why do you have an Ayn Rand (1905-1982) quote displayed on your web page? She was a life long smoker and I'm surprised at your admiration of a such a "stupid", "dumb" and "ignorant" person.
  • My Body, My Choice
Isn't it odd that Boortz thinks abortion is a right, a matter of "my body my choice" - even though it always and necessarily destroys someone else's body - to the extent that he won't even allow the issue to be discussed by anyone other than himself? And yet, he doesn't see how "my body my choice" could possibly apply to smokers - whose choice doesn't necessarily affect any body but their own.

    How very libertarian!

Let us tax and ban all bad habits, and call it "choice". Let the government decide which habits are bad, and call it "freedom". Let's preach the Fair Tax and wink at the Fear Tax - and not even note that it will fund health care for "the children" and not for the poor, stupid, dying smokers who are forced to pay it. Let's complain that smokers are a financial burden on everyone because they have been forced into socialist health insurance schemes which should be the real focus of libertarian protest.

Then, to ice this nutty fruitcake, let's headline every day's webpage with a silly, tired quote from a chain-smoking atheist slut who forced her husband to agree to her adulterous affairs with her young male disciples while she cranked out endless pages of strident propaganda dressed up as fiction.

Well, I guess she must have been pretty stupid, a smoking loser, this randy Ayn. But Kneel Bores loves her all the same.

At least he is consistent in his inconsistency.

    Love, Laura
  • Tax
    I knew it!
    I knew it!
Now they have taxed our BUTTS!
  • Smoke away
Smoke away you Obama voters. Smoke until you hemmorage your lungs out. America will be a better place without you.
  • Uhhhmmmm....Rush Limbaugh,
Neal Boortz just called you an ignorant dummy, you cigar smoking, no Fair Tax supportin', unsuccessful, poor Obamabot.

I enjoy a good cigar from time to time, so, please include me to as an ignorant fool too.

Note to family: Please put a few boxes of Casa Blanca Reserve Cameroon Coronas in my coffin just in case I can have them later.
  • Facts prove otherwise, AWK. Wrong Again.
96% of blacks voted for Obama
66% of hispanics voted for Obama
70% of unmarried women voted for Obama

Now for some smoker demographics according to the American Lung Association:

Tobacco usage is highest among black and hispanic populations.....
Lung cancer is the leading cause of death among hispanic males....
more blacks die from smoking-related illnesses than non-hispanic whites, even though they are a smaller % of the population....

Wow, those are GREEEAT demographics, really something to be proud of, AWK. I say PLEASE, GO AHEAD, light up you losers so there are less of you to vote!
  • Intentional
Do you intentionally drop these idiotic posts sometimes just to see if people read? Foolishness in my opinion.
  • Neal I hope you read this
I LOVE that you support taxing the hell out of these idiot smokers. It also shows that you simply don't toe the line on libertarian issues. It's OK to be in the middle on some things. Keep up the good work and know that I support you on this.
  • Agree with Anonymous
Addendum to my previous post. Witness all of the "criminal" behavior that crops up when people attempt to avoid behavior-modifying-taxation (i.e. prohibition). How does millions of people choosing to buy their smokes on a black market increase state revenue for health care? How does violent crime resulting from protecting one's "black market turf" increase our health or wellbeing as a society? Can we put a prohibitive tax on the gangsters' behavior so that we can pay for the added health-care cost of gunshot wounds resulting from these turf wars? How do these unintended consequences hold smokers accountable for any increased health care costs?

Neal, it's time to go back to the fundamentals. Freedom means tolerating crap you don't like in the hope that others will tolerate your crap, at least in public spaces.

Let's address the real problem with a real solution. Too many perceive health care as a human right, and too few of us are willing to allow a free market to control those costs, so we allow politicians to rook us into footing the bill for health-care that belongs to those who purchased the services with their unhealthy behavior.
  • It's been said already.
Excessively tax or outlaw any goods and the black market will take it over. Stupid laws like this do nothing more than make matters worse. Are you listening STAN GABLE?
BTW, I wonder how much of the new witholding decrease $$ is going to be spent on tobacco thereby offsetting the increased taxes. You see, American taxpayer, Obama just hosed the tobacco non-consumer because YOU are helping pay the very taxes he put on the tobacco consumers. Redistribution. Very clever.
  • I can't wait....
until the government gets on the latest health officals bandwagon - childhood obesity epidemic. So let's help the little rascals out - a $1.00 increase in all soda products, all snack foods, all fast-food resturant food, all video game componets and all video dvd's. Since the little can't seem to stop themselves, let's help(tax) them out, from eating this unhealthly food and sitting in front of the TV playing video games and watching movies(they should be outside getting some excercise). As one of the people responded that the children of smokers will be the one's on SCHIP. I wonder how many overweight kids are already on SCHIP?

You think this is absurd...well I think any tax the government imposes to penalize a certain portion of the population is absurd.

I hope everyone stops smoking (should please all you health nuts) and the government says OOPS - dang we need to find another way to tax people to pay for our free health care for the children.

Think it won't happen...Well look when the gas prices went up and people started cutting down on driving...the government said OOPS...we aren't getting enough money...let's look at another way to tax the people...like a tax on the miles they drive. Most if not all states do have annual inspections, you do the math on how they will figure out the miles you drove. Some states are already looking at this new way of taxing people.

So don't get so darn happy when the government raises a TAX.
  • Smoke, smoke, smoke
... as the old song goes:
    "Smoke, smoke, smoke that cigarette.
Smoke, smoke, it 'till you smoke yourself to death."
  • Sin Taxes
I am a highly educated professional, as well as an ex-smoker. I would just like to bring up some finer points that may have been inadvertently overlooked. I know Neil does his research, but what the folks are not seeing is the dangerous road we have been walking down with the “Sin Taxes”.
The US Constitution (which is a social contract NOT a living document) clearly states that the government has only one reason to institute and levy taxes. That reason is to generate revenue for the operation of our government and should be brought to bear in a way that is fair to each and every individual making up society as a whole.
To single out one group of people and levy a tax based on changing a behavior that some may deem to be inappropriate, is not only wrong, it is unconstitutional. The Government cannot and should not levy any tax for the reason of modification of end behavior.
When enough folks quit, I hope they do, but if they do not that should be their choice. What do we tax next? My vote is Diapers, tax the hell out of folks that want to have kids, they made a choice to have children Diapers should cost $75.00 a pack that would be fair and hey it would allow for an endless stream of income for the government to pay for the SCHIP program.
God I hope no politicians read the above paragraph – I was being a snit to prove a point and hopefully make some folks set back and thing about taxation for the modification of behavior. It really does affect us all.
  • Yesh enough already
We know you don’t smoke, it's a bad habit but it's a choice. But it's just as unhealthy as eating fatty foods and booze so should we tax that too? How about a sugar tax and see if the diabetes rate drops? Oh and yes Neal I am poor, I'm in the NAVY.
  • Cigarette Tax Increase
I live in a state where the tobacco industry directly employes over 50,000 people. This tax increase that you love will affect more than "the poor" (which you don't like) and smokers (which you hate).
Let's see if you are still saying "I Love It" when they put a tax on motorcycle riders (which is also dangerous) to help support SCHIP. I have a better idea let's increase the tax by 158% on radio talk show hosts with one-eyed dogs.
  • Smoking Economics
Apparently, Neal has yet to discover that smoking is a prevalent habit among many of the extremely well compensated icons of the entertainment and modeling industry.
However, the Obama/ Congress Tobacco Tax may prove to decrease smoking and/or increase tobacco theft thereby reducing the amounts collected. What's next?
  • Intelligence = ???
"Intelligence equals success. Oh, wait, there's an entire class of exceedingly wealthy/successful people who quite clearly aren't intelligent, which entirely disproves my assertion. That's okay though, I'm a talk radio host, so I'll just handwave it away and dismiss it out-of-hand like I do all other facts that prove me wrong."
  • Unintended Consequences?
I agree with a commenter on another recent topic--Neal's pet issues (smoking and seat belts) make it difficult for him to uphold his generally libertarian ideals of freedom. Has he given any thought to the unintended consequences of prohibitive taxation?

I don't want taxpayers to be forced to pay the way for the stupids any more than Neal does, but I doubt that government prohibition or requirements will have Neal's intended outcome of reducing the # of smokers (or unbuckled drivers) while lessening their burden on individual taxpayers via health care/infrastructure costs.
  • Smoke Tax
YES, CIGARS ARE INCLUDED. Rich folk like me who enjoy a nice Rocky Patel Sun Grown Toro now and then are now paying between 40 cents and 70 cents more per cigar.

The good thing about this tax is that many people will quit smoking because of it.

The BAD thing is---when the Fed doesn't receive enough revenue from it to amply satisfy the SCHIP program, where-oh-where do you think they're going to find the rest of the funds they need?

    That's right---FROM YOU!
  • Smoking
    You hate smoking.
    You hate smoking.
    You hate smoking.

OK WE GET IT ALREADY !!!!

Did someone blow smoke in your face when you were a little kid or something ?

BTW Ayn Rand was a smoker. Maybe you should quit quoting her.
  • Cigars
Unfortunately, cigars are not excluded from this tax hike. So, one of my small luxuries just got even more expensive. And for those who may ask: no, Swisher Sweets, Phillies, and Black and Mild are not cigars.
  • dumb smokers
I definitely hate having to be around someone smoking. If research shows the poor, uneducated, ignorant are more likely to smoke, I'll concede the point.

However, many people at the other end of the spectrum are still providing a poor example too.

Most notably the POTUS Obama & Ann Coulter.

Though I hate targeted taxes, from the standpoint of punish activity you want less of, this makes sense.
  • Smoking
I'm going to take up smoking so I can appear to be wealthy. That's the way it is in Canada where cigarette taxes have been high forever.

Actually Obama did this to give him incentive to quit.
  • Good Way to Fund SCHIP
I love how the Democrats increased taxes on the smokers. Since most of their kids will be reliant on SCHIP, might as well have them cough up some of that money as well. Along with the lung.

By the way I am a reformed smoker. I quit smoking June 15, 2005 - Cold Turkey. If you can't quit you are truly weak minded!
  • Smoking
Reading your comments on Smoking like this re-enforces why I quit. You really helped me, thanks Neal. 64 Days and Counting!
  • Are cigars included?
Does the tax apply to Rush's cigars? Do po' folk go to cigar bars? Are the cigar bars full of stupid people too? I don't think poor people or a significant number of nonwhite people are in the cigar bars. If cigars are excluded, ya gotta ask why. Here in Durham a nonsmoking ordinance is being considered and there is an exception for cigar bars as of now.
  • Boortz advances myth that the rich rejected Obama
In this missive, it is stated that "poor people" were the Obama supporters, implying that higher-income people ("the successful") did not vote for Obama.

Actually, exit polls revealed that those with household incomes of $200,000+ voted 52%-46% for Obama. Google "2008 vote by demographic". The figures come from Edison Media Research/Mitofsky International, the dominant source of such data for many media outlets, including Fox News.

By the way, those with advanced degrees went for Obama 58-40.

Facts suck when they run against the themes advanced on a near-daily basis, don't they?
  • Close..
Intelligence + Luck = Wealth. I'm not wealthy because my paychecks go to health care treatments, I guess I'm not intelligent by Bortz standards.
  • Finally
It looks like it took a Democrat to have the thingies to stand up to the tobacco industry. This is just a tax on the stupid, good for Obama. They should raise the tax on cigarettes, guns, and alcohol more and more and lower the tax on people who care about their own(and their family's) general welfare
  • Smoking habit.
Have you heard the news? It appears that a lot of very smart people, professionals who are making good money, working in areas that make the United States of America the greatest country in the world are immigrants. And in most of the countries they came from smoking is part of "culture", it's very hard to escape it. And it's addictive.
So, part of the might and greatness of this country is due to the efforts of smart mokers. Deal with it.
  • But Nancy Pelosi needs these folks to smoke, and smoke more. How else is she going to pay for SCHIP. Thats where the funds are to go to from the coffin nail tax increase. That and the 6 billion a year from Phillip Morris in corporate taxes, and the states need the money to from the master settlement to balance their budgets. Oh woe is Nancy, they need to tax the evil rich more to make up for the lost coffin nail revenue!
  • For the record, Neal
I am government educated, Neal, just like you. I am not poor, Neal, just like you. I am not dumb nor ignorant, Neal, just like you. I am a smoker, Neal. Deal with it.
