OBAMA WANTS A SIMPLER TAX CODE

Barack Obama says that he wants to pare down the "monstrous" tax code to make it simpler for Americans to pursue the American dream. Hey, President Obama ... I've got a really ingenious, simple idea. Maybe you have heard of it? It's called the FairTax. No filing federal or state income taxes. No more IRS bureaucracy and thousands of pages of tax codes under which to comply.

What do you think my chances are of getting that one in front of the president for consideration? More likely than my chances with Angelina Jolie?

What others are saying

  • Obama and the Fair Tax
I had heard that Obama was introduced to the idea of the Fair Tax by an Illinois judge who happens to be one of his mentors. I think that in order to pay for all of this planned government spending we will need to implement the Fair Tax. Mr. Boortz, what do we need to do to get your message taken seriously by the masses? It is very frustrating when I speak with people about the Fair Tax and they have no idea what it is all about, yet when I ask them if they would like to take home more money in their pay checks by eliminating federal income taxes, they are all for it!!!
  • Copy, thats funny
    Copy,

Why did you waste your time writing all that. you either a fool or a liar.

    1) The FT deal with FED taxes and never claimed other wise.
    2) The only reason we have the home-mortgage deduction is because of the current system. With the FT you don't FED income tax, no need for deduction.
3)Your using some dumba** talking point, taxes on the these good would go away!
    4) Savings plans would no longer be taxed themselves, hence more money.

And so on and so on....you really should read the facts more, because these are the same tired arguments that where put to rest a year ago. (NOTE: you should check the date of posting)
Last but not least, if this is the case why don't we have a debate and put it out there for everyone to see.

You keep swinging peaches, one you will be able to sit at the big peoples table.

AND IT JUST KEEPS GETTING FUNNIER!
  • OBAMA WANTS A SIMPLER TAX CODE
    > Barack Obama says that he wants to
    > pare down the "monstrous" tax code to
    > make it simpler for Americans to
    > pursue the American dream.

I can only assume Obama wants to simplify the tax code by only taxing "the evil rich".
  • FAIRTAX..YES
These republicrats are going full speed ahead with the blinders on..lets hope these poli-chickens dont hit the slaughter house head on before we can put the chicken wire fence up..
  • More Facts
    • The UnfairTax makes no mention of state and local deductions when it claims “You’ll keep 100% of your paycheck!” No, you won’t.

    • It skims over the fact that the home-mortgage deduction would go away, and yet it claims home ownership would go UP, rather than down. Actually, home values would be likely to decline.

    • It claims a 23% sales tax rate, when it would actually be at least 30%. The cost of manufactured goods would be even higher, since the cost of raw materials to make them is also taxed.

    • The plan assumes full compliance and a trivial evasion rate, rather than the entirely predictable “black market” that would spring up to evade these new sales taxes. The 30%-sales-tax incentive to participate in an underground economy would, in turn, result in far less revenue than our current system.

    • It eliminates deductions for charitable contributions, putting the poor and elderly (remember, they have no income any more and are living solely on consumer spending out of savings plans that have already been taxed) in a worse position.

    • It overlooks that governmental expenditures will themselves by affected by the increased sales tax on federal purchases.

    • The plan assumes that consumer spending will continue as before; as noted, this is unlikely, and we’ve already seen the effects of reduced spending in a consumer-driven economy such as ours. It’s called a “recession.”

    • It makes no attempt to address the cost of the transition itself.

    • It treats expenses such as household debt interest, home purchases, rent, medical bills, utilities and even stamps as “consumption” in order to assume a 100% tax base.

    • The rate is not indexed for inflation.

    • The UnfairTax claims to be “revenue neutral” and that it “exactly equals the cost of embedded taxes,” which is a contradiction. (To be revenue-neutral, it would have to equal embedded taxes PLUS current income taxes PLUS current estate taxes.)

  • Facts about the UnfairTax... AGAIN
And I know the hardcore believers will breeze right by these facts, AGAIN... and come back a couple weeks later to cry, "Where's your evidence that the UnfairTax wouldn't work? Show us some proof!" AGAIN.

Here's the short version (or you could check the Nuze archives)...

The UnfairTax does NOT reduce taxes for the middle class and the poor, whose incomes are disproportionately more affected by a consumption/sales tax. (All the “prebate” does is shift the current lowest-level tax burden onto—you guess it!—the middle class again.) It DOES, however, do a lot of favors for the wealthy, whose wealth is less affected by consumption taxes. All the UnfairTax does is cut taxes for the 12,000 richest households in the country (netting them $700 billion), and then “rearrange” everyone else’s taxes to pay for it.

  • obama's simplified tax form
    1- open your checbook
    2 - check your balance
3 - Keep 100, send the rest to me.
  • osbama says .........
"I want every American to know that we will rewrite the tax code so that it puts your interests over any special interest. And we will make it quicker, easier, and less expensive for you to file a return, so that April 15 is not a date that is approached with dread each year."

Thank God! That complicated and costly Kiplinger Tax Cut program and E-filing fees were KILLING me! You have solved the problem at long last!!!

thanks obama - they were right about you all along and I was too ignorant and too right wing extremist to see it - you are brilliant and our savior!

By the way - kudos to your speech coaches - a LOT less uhhhs and ahhhs and ummmms when you were talking about this. They must be riding you hard these days to make sure you know what you're going to say at least 2 seconds BEFORE it's due out of your mouth. A lot more appealing than looking like you're making it up as you go - cause we all know you're not doing that, right?
  • "What do you think my chances are of getting that one in front of the president for consideration? More likely than my chances with Angelina Jolie?" Or you growing a full head of hair!! HEY-oh, thank you, thank you very much.
  • Angelina vs. Obama supporting the Fairtax
    Boortzelina it is.
  • For you FairTax opponents
I read a lot of commentary & conjecture from you folks concerning the FairTax, but not much more. I perceive those of us here to be fairly intelligent. So please humor us with some FACTS that you can build your opposition on that will allow us the opportunity to either concede or rebut.

This is not some "get you" thing. I am merely in search of solid evidence that the FairTax is bogus. To date, everything that opponents have thrown at the FairTax has been dispelled or reputed - WITH FACTS. Oddly, when this happens, the opponent makes some nebulous comment and, figuratively speaking, leaves.

Am I a supporter? Yes. But I'm also a skeptic about most things in life except for my religious beliefs. My point being, I'm open to your take on the FairTax as long as you can cite facts (sorry - I'm an Engineer).

    So there....the floor is open.
  • Almost forgot
....and the 'non legals' or 'undocumenteds' would be contributing as well.
  • osamabama at georgetown
    Neal et al
I have been telling you all that the stinking muslim marxist in the white house is a stinking muslim marxist and a non us citizen.

Well only a stinking marxist muslim would want to cover images of christian icons at one of our universities, one founded by a religious group many years ago.

So be afraid, be very afraid.
  • Fair Tax beta test
    I would in a heartbeat.
Based on $75k of discretionary spending and $40k paid in Federal ransom in 08, my tax burden goes down by 56.8%.
I'm more than happy to pay my fair share to the infrastructure!
  • OBAMA WANTS A SIMPLER TAX CODE
Yeah, he wants a code that would say; "Send me all your money."
  • Never say "NEVER"
Whether or not the Fair Tax legislation sees the light of day really depends on us - the more people become aware of this alternative and really understand the details. The few times I discussed the Fair Tax with some folks the initial response has been an almost immediate dismissal as "crazy waste of time". Once I get into the details of prebate and exclusive v/s inclusive tax rate, I can literally see the lightbulbs go on! So, let's not say never. It's going to be a slow process and no matter who's in charge, we ned to get more supporters for the Fair Tax.

And good luck with Angelina (puke) Jolie!
  • It WAS introduced in the past!
    "I don't believe I've heard of it."

You obviously don't track congressional bills.

"Linder first sponsored the "Fair Tax Act" in the House in July of 1999, and has reintroduced a FairTax bill at the beginning of every term of Congress since then, including the current one." --http://www.lewrockwell.com/vance/vance168.html

NOTE: This source does NOT like the FairTax. Instead, like Ron Paul, he deems ANY confiscation of your wealth as immoral, and unfair. How's that for unbiased sources?
  • @ Copyleft
"Since the Unfair Tax fails on both counts".....

Excuse me? Do you even know anything about the Fair Tax? Have you read any of the Fair Tax books? Why don't you come back when you've educated yourself.
  • If only
If only the GOP leadership had any brains and/or cojones, they'd include FairTax in a new contract with America... I'm suuure that the MSM would give FairTax a fair look ... about the same time my dog surfs the net.
  • That was my sign at the tea party
    It read:
Obama wants "a simpler tax code that rewards work and helps in the pursuit of the American dream" sounds like he wants the FAIRTAX
    Everyone loved it
I showed it to the few Obama people and they would not even see that their own guy said that and we had a solution for what he wants! Nor would they talk to me civil about it in a conversation.
  • Paring down Tax Code
Obama's definition for paring down the tax code is eliminating deductions for middle class America who can still file a detailed tax long form. The result is higher taxes. The best way to get your point across is to save your money and not spend it. When the gov. starts to starve they will get the point.
  • fair tax but at what cost in jobs?
the fair tax by my estimate would increase the unemployment rate by 2.5%. These jobs would be gone never to return. Of course they would be mostly IRS agents and auditors, government tax consultants and tax lawyers, tax loophole lobbiest,H&R Block employees,Tax-cut and TurboTax softwear writers, and possibly a few dozen congressmen & thousands of congressional aides/staff/yes men and hanger on'rs. The effect on the economy would be huge and welcome.
  • Hugo's ghost
don't think the republican LEADERSHIP wants the fair tax any more that the democrats.

    lobbyists wouldn't approve
  • Tax code
Cannon - That was my first thought when I heard his B.S.

Adopt a consumer tax, fair tax, whatever you want to call it. That way EVERY AMERICAN pays his share according to his ability, will generate more revenue and we won't need the IRS.

Now, let's see who argues with that.
  • Angie
You have a helluva better chance with Angie (turn out the lights and you cannot see the tats).
  • Paring Down the Tax Code
Neal, you silly boy...Of course Obama wants to pare down the tax code to: What did you make, send it in.

    There, tax code simplified.
  • realistically
It is the best tax option but too many jobs will be lost. Not gonna happen in this economy.
  • Sorry, Neal...
Obama's looking for GOOD ideas to simplify the tax code, while still preserving a civilized society.

Since the Unfair Tax fails on both counts, it's not in the running. But do try to come up with some better suggestions and submit them--we're all in this together, after all! (Well, except for the bitter clingers....)
  • Fair Tax
Neal, why haven't you and John Linder parlayed your popularity into a Georgia state fair tax? The Fair Tax needs a beta test to prove and/or disprove its viability.
  • Jolie
I don't know about your chances with Angelina Jolie, but I'd bet a weeks salary you could get the Octomom.
  • Your chances with Angelina Jolie
Neal, Neal, Neal...Angelina has tattoos and therefore is beneath your level of contempt. Why would you lower yourself to this level? or are you saying some tattoos are good, or that they should be overlooked sometimes?
  • FairTax?
I don't believe I've heard of it. If it had benn introduced in the Republican controlled Congress, I bet it would have gotten lots of hearings and gone to the floor for a vote. They should've introduced it then. Not much chance of it passing now.
