OBAMA, MEXICO AND GUNS

President Obama is in Mexico right now. He is there to tell the Mexican government that he is willing to do anything he can to help in their battle against drugs and violence. And that includes ..... slowing down the dangerous flow of weapons from the United States.

The question now remains: how is he planning to do that?

Well we know one thing is for sure (or do we?) He is not going to reinstate an assault weapons ban (or will he?). (Although, he did make that promise when he was running for president and he still maintains that the ban makes sense.) Eric Holder recently brought up the idea of instating the ban and both parties said no to the idea.

Instead, Obama said that he wants to focus on enforcing existing laws that make it illegal to send assault weapons across the border.

These weapons pose a danger in Mexico. Fine. I get it. Now ... take a look at the statistics for crime brought to us by the wonderful Mexican invasion of the US. Specifically, look at assaults and deaths from drunk driving. I would be interested in knowing where the higher death toll is: Deaths from drunk illegal drivers in the U.S.; or deaths from assault weapons in Mexico.

What others are saying

  • Arms going to Mexico
The way to solve this is to make our fellow neighbors from the United States, stop consuming drugs, where there is no demand, there is no supply.
  • what a scam
slow the flow of drugs coming in and guns going out.when the drugs get to america charge twice as much for them so violence increases cause the druggie cannot afford to get his her fix.thus the crimes become more intense and complex.and as far as the guns exported the same goes there as well. what better way to demand more tax dollars to fight this war..?
  • traceable guns
Everyone needs to go back to the 2nd post. Jim its it right on the head, 0nly 17% of the guns in Mexico are traceable, of those those few, 90% are traceable to the US. The vast majority are not traceable!
  • Obama's Plan
Obama's plan is obvious. He is going to increase enforcement on the border.

But they're not going to be looking for drugs and illegals coming North, they're going to be searching everyone going South.
  • laws on the books
There are plenty of laws on the books already for controling ALL the guns in the US. The anti-gun politians of both parties do very little to enforce these laws because if enforced they would prove that guns in hands of law abiding citizens are not a problem. But if the laws on the books are not enforced well enough then the anti-gun crowd can say"see these laws are not working, therefore we need more laws",which of course will not be enforced until the only law left that they will claim that will work is total confiscation. The politicians don't fear angry voters, but do fear angry, armed voters.
  • Read http://www.jbs.org/index.php/issues/war-foreign-policy/1872-treaties-and-the-constitution for a clarification of treaties in the context of state governments and the federal government.

Treaties are NOT meant to trump the constitution, but instead be nullified if found in conflict with the constitution.

    Article VI:
This Constitution, and the Laws of the United States which shall be made in Pursuance thereof; and all Treaties made, or which shall be made, under the Authority of the United States, shall be the supreme Law of the Land; and the Judges in every State shall be bound thereby, any Thing in the Constitution or Laws of any State to the Contrary notwithstanding.

As stated by Jefferson: "By the general power to make treaties, the Constitution must have intended to comprehend only those objects which are usually regulated by treaty, and cannot be otherwise regulated.... It must have meant to except out of those the rights reserved to the states; for surely the President and Senate cannot do by treaty what the whole government is interdicted from doing in any way."
  • Stan Gable
Come on, Stan, put that "gun-free zone" sign in front of your house already. Let's find out which of the two of us is smarter. What are you waiting for?
  • 90 percent myth
Fox did an article debunking the left's hold on this phony 90% of the guns in mexico is coming from the U.S.
    http://www.foxnews.com/politics/elections/2009/04/02/myth-percent-guns-mexico-fraction-number-claimed/
  • Weapons going to Mexico.
This should be simple. Close the border. Make it work in both directions and solve 2 problems at once. And let the mexicans pay half the cost.
  • the only thing missing
is the "voice-over" guy narrating a preview of things to come for our illustrious emperor.
If Obsama believes for one second that Mexico is doing everything it can to curtail drug violence and everything else that goes along with that, he is going to be silly putty in the hands of kim jong ill and ahmahandjob.
To think he would even consider the thought of dictating domestic policy based on the demands of a foreign head of state - What a fool he'd have to be!
Thankfully, his plate is way too full to take on such a controversial issue now, so I would expect a polite but firm "no" to requests for a ban on assault weapons at this time. Unless he is an incredibly bigger fool than anyone could ever imagine, which is entirely possible.
  • osamabama collect dem' guns
    here is a suggestion.
osamabama should go into the neighborhoods there in mexico and sweet talk 'em to hand over their guns and join acorn. then they could get them back after their training is over for the national militia and help the unions sign up more members, with a right to vote as many times as they want, even when they're dead.

works for me. check his id before letting him back into the country!!!!!

    DRIP don't return incumbent politicians.
  • Assualt weapon?
The AR-15 (armalite model 15) shoots a 223 cal (some deer hunters use this caliber) is not an assault weapon. It is a Homeland Security Rifle. Right?
  • motivation behind this?
Obamalama has got to have some alterior motive for telling the Mexican president that he won't reinstitute the gun ban. My husband thinks it's because it has the 'Clinton' name attached to it, and PresBO's ego couldn't stand the strain.

I trust that Obama person about as far as I could throw him. I'd like to think he won't do it because he doesn't want to piss us conservatives off anymore than we already are, but that's probably just wishful thinking.
  • If we are to BELIEVE the LIE about US guns going to Mexico,
Then WHY Aren't there gun battles in CANADA with these weapons???????????????

Answer that, all you Logically-challenged Leftists.
  • Firearms technology
Just think ... if it was not for the firearms technology today, the "three shots heard around the world" taking out the pirates would not have been possible.
    Sure wasn't made with flintlocks.
  • US Made guns in other coutries
It is very true, many weapons from the USA do get to countries in Central and South America. Of course they are legally exported BY THE US Government and sent to the Mexican and other governments to be used in the war on drugs.
They are then sold into the black market.
Bonnie and Clyde stole guns from the police, why buy when you are a thief? Same way today, the US Army and even the FBI have lots of stolen weapons missing from their inventories.
What new law is needed for that to end?
    The
  • Treaty VS Constitution
Thats a frightening thought, Mac. Thanks for making my day (a little more scary).
  • Getting around the Constitution
When a treaty is ratified, it becomes a superior form of law even to the Constitution, in that its terms can be enforced EVEN IF those terms would be unConstitutional if passed by Congress.

This proposed treaty is an end run around the Heller decision, a means to place US citizens subject to State Department regulation of firearms in order to comply with its terms.
  • Stan Gable
    Stan, obviously with your severely limited intellectual capacity you can not think of anything else to say but;
"Either they are violent criminals, paranoid losers who wait in a basement for WW3, or people too dumb to find the grocery store."
Stan please ask someone who has an intelligence level above that of a 3rd grader to come up with another argument for you.
    The Security Code System SUCKS!!!!!!
  • A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed
Clearly the intent of the second amendment, as in:

    - A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed -

Was to protect the People FROM the Government.

The FACT that Leftists can't understand this speaks volumes on their intelligence.
  • Guns
Obama and his radical left wing extremist administration is going to find something to attack the second amendment with... heck, nothing he's done has paid any attention to any other limitation in the Constitution, so why should this be any different... as if the document seems to matter anymore at all...
He's going to start with registration of firearms or ammunition and serialization of ammunition. I guarantee some kind of attack on gun owners in the US is coming from this anti-freedom administration.
  • Hello Stan Gable
I am a law abiding citizen who frequents 3 grocery stores close to my house, do not have a basement, nor do I believe WW3 is coming. I also am a gun owner and take that responsibility seriously as others will make us look bad and suffer criticism from the likes of you.
  • Guns etc.
Both parties know the voter backlash is severe if they try the gun ban again. I can see them taxing everything involved to death though. The mexican problem is so solvent that its pitiful. Stolen guns have no regulations and never will. Its too easy to go after the law abiding.
I wonder if I am on a list somewhere. Marine/life NRA/Fifty Cal.Shooters Assn/master class Airrifle/sillhouette/highpower/smallbore Stan Gable evidently has a third grade education trying to get everyone riled up as he writes his post. Come visit me Stan I can lead you away from your sociopathic views.

  • Guns flow the other way
It is truly amazing how these incorrect stories of the massive amount of American “weapons” are being smuggled into Mexico from the US are being spun by the press and our government. I would like to know how many of the guns which show up on the streets for the US were smuggled in by Mexican gangs from Mexico? I truly believe this is a far greater problem, just ask a Gwinnett County police office.
  • RE: A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the PEOPLE to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
What part of 'shall not be infringed', don't you People understand??????????????????
  • In Bed w/ Obama?
He is really starting to scare me! Obama said he would do anything. He doesn't have the experience or knowledge to be negotiating w/ Mexico. They will eat him for Breakfast!
  • Send gunowners to Mexico
Easy solution, gunowners obviously arent smart enough to be citizens of America. Either they are violent criminals, paranoid losers who wait in a basement for WW3, or people too dumb to find the grocery store.
  • Jack Smythe
were do you live? i'm a dangerous criminal. but i'm a coward too. it looks you are the victim for me
  • Weapons
There is a law in Mexico forbidding anyone from owning a military weapon. So, they imported Super .38s from Colt in lieu of the venerable .45 because of this.

Looking at various "assault weapons" confiscated and on display most appear to be stolen from the Mexican Army. Those of US origin I mean. AK47/AK74 could have come over the SOUTHERN border from Nicaragua and probably did.

Jack Smythe needs to define what his opinion of an assault weapon is before espousing banning whatever. Most weapons now have ceramics/plastics that look similar to military weapons. Having said that, I believe a citizen can own whatever weapon he desires including "assault weapons." M4 currently used by my son is NOT full automatic and the 5.56mm round is one ten-thousandth larger than the .22 varmint rifle. Most of your deer rifles are .30 caliber. AK47/74 is 7.62mm which is .30cal. The old Soviet made AK47/74 and the knock-off copies are full auto, but no one with training would use full auto under any circumstances. My two favourite weapons are the M82-A1 Barrett and the Browning M60-E. Unfortunately, the only one I can buy is the Barrett. Long and short, most people assume all rifles are "assault weapons", not realizing that not only isn't true but a foolish assumption. Ever hear about the new 30-round full-auto shotgun? It's legal.
  • Smythe
If you take the time to read some of the Founding Fathers writings of the time, you will find that protecting oneself from a "tyrannical government" (ring any bells?)was foremost in their thinking. If the common man ever has to has to face this, it would make since to me. I believe in 1776, a farmer protecting his property with a musket would have the same firepower as a soldier.
  • RE: Jack Smythe @ 04/17/09 09:15:57 AM, The right to bear arms.
The Bill of Rights is to be understood, and has been understood, by the courts to be not a ceiling on the rights of the people but a floor under them.
All the specific rights articulated in the Bill of Rights are therefore mere examples to illustrate the rights of the people.

Who the H*ll are you to decide what WE THE PEOPLE NEED!!!!!!!
  • Build a fence
    Jason,

I was about to say we should build a fence to keep our guns in.

You beat me to the punch. Good on ya mate!
  • Mexico Violence
The problem with Mexico is that guns and ammunition are tightly controlled by the Mexican government. When all of the drug violence heated up a few years ago I expected the populace along the border to get fed up and end it as it was having a huge effect on businesses in the border areas. But the people are not able to do anything because the weapons are only in the hands of the outlaws and federales. Some in our government would like to have the same thing here.
  • Simpler Solution
The violence attends Black Market lucre. Abolish prohibition, the "War on Drugs" as it is known today, and the market will be FREE instead of "Black". A common "Weed" will no longer be inordinately expensive.
  • If you see someone with an assault weapon...
..you at least have the opportunity to take cover. A drunk driver after dark? Not so much.

Hyperbole, Copyleft, is not a statement of facts. I looked for the 100% statement in the Newz and couldn't find it. A brief investigation reveals that 13 Americans die on the highway each day due to drunken illegals. Another 12 Americans are murdered daily by ostensibly sober illegals. It's not your 100% - just thousands annually.

    Vaya con dios, amigo.
  • How about a DMZ
Between mexico and the US? We can both build walls!
  • re: Build a Freakin WALL!!
Isn't it about time the Mexican government built a wall along the border to prevent the flow of illegal weapons into their country?

    By Jason @ 04/17/09 08:49:54 AM

You know, a CRAZY idea like that just might work!!!!
  • Careful
Careful Boortz, putting a picture of a gun beside comments on Obahma, you should know better. That will get DHS watching you. Who am I kidding, they have been watching you for a while now.
  • Mexican Guns
According to a ATF report, only 17% of the confiscated guns were traced to the U.S. The other 83% came across the Mexican/Guatemalan border
  • Why weapons from the US
The 90% claim is 100% false. The real number is around 17%. Let's see, find a straw buyer in the US to buy one semi automatic "assault" weapon then smuggle it into Mexico, or buy crates and container loads of Class 3 full auto weapons, expolsives, armor piercing ammo, gernade launchers, and anything else they want from any number of countries. Little more effective don't you think. No one is in the US paying $15K for a transferable NFA select fire M-16, getting an ATF tax stamp, and submiting themselves to an extensive back ground check just so they can have it smuggled into Mexico. What a shell game!
  • Assault weapons should be banned.
Yes Americans have the right to bear arms. But that does not imply any kind of arms. Why does someone need to own an assault weapon? Just as people can't own machine guns, hand grenades, rocket launchers, there is no reason why a person needs to have an assault weapon to protect himself/herself or to go hunting with it. The right to bear arms shouldn't imply any kind of arms.
  • Bans
Yesterday CNN was reporting about Obamas speech in Mexico saying that he would do everything he could to reinstate the "Assault Weapons Ban" and strengthen it.

Fox news was reporting that he was against a new ban, based on an interview.

Looks like he is still straddling the fence, telling different audiences whatever they want to hear.

I'm also curious where in the US Mexicans are purchasing grenandes and fully auto weapons, since apparently we are supplying all their illegal weapons. Funny that most of these weapons are imported to Mexico from Countries other than the US, but it is blamed it on us but then are unwilling to shut down the border, hmmmm.....
  • Beware the Treaty...
A treaty trumps the U.S. Constitution, and is only ratified by the Senate. Watch for this to occur between the US and Mexico on firearms. A nifty backdoor for this administration...
  • mexicans killing americans
I believe I heard boortz read a report stating that illigal mexicans kill atleast 2 americans everyday here in the states. can anyone confirm this?
  • Statist Lies
If the highly regulated, Automatic weapons the drug gangs are using can be traced to an FFL in this country, why aren't they doing anything about it?

Answer: This whole is based on a LIE, just like everything else in the Statist agenda
  • Showmanship!
Gotta hand it to Neal. He found a way to disagree with Obama even when they agree, word for word, 100%

Neal's always been spouting off about the importance of "enforcing the gun laws we already have." Now, when Obama says the Exact Same Thing, Neal manages to come up with a way to STILL claim he's wrong!

By comparing a totally unrelated issue and pretending that illegal Mexican immigrants are somehow behind 100% of all drunk-driving accidents in the U.S.

That's some fancy stepping, right there. All in the name of entertainment, and to avoid the ratings disaster of agreeing with President Obama. Well done!
  • OBAMA, MEXICO AND GUNS
The question now remains: how is he planning to do that?

Hmmm...... I have an answer..... Do a better job on policing the border! But, I guess the Obama Administration would rather throw rocks at Our Constitution.
  • Guns from US
And he says 90% of the weapons come from the US. The reality is that 90% of the *weapons they can trace* come from the US, but they can't trace the origin of very many of the weapons, such as all of those AK-47 knockoffs that come through the southern Mexican borders.
  • Assault Weapons in Mexico
Isn't it about time the Mexican government built a wall along the border to prevent the flow of illegal weapons into their country?
