Yesterday was an interesting day for New Yorkers. The Pentagon thought that it would be a good idea to fly a presidential plane around the Statue of Liberty, trailed by an F-16 fighter jet. They were flying as low as 1000 feet above the city. Turned out that it was for a photo shoot.

OK ... nothing wrong with a photo shoot. I can see where the Air Force would want glossy photos of Air Force One circling the Statue of Liberty ... though any connection between liberty and the person currently riding on Air Force One is vague at best.

Here's the problem. New Yorkers didn't know about the photo shoot. Even the mayor didn't know, and is he ever pissed. Apparently people in New York were evacuating buildings and trying to get out of the city. The NYPD had been told about the mission, but was ordered to stay quiet about it. Chuckie Schumer was also upset that no one was notified. He says the whole thing is "absolutely outrageous and appalling .. To think that the FAA would plan such a photo shoot and not warn the public, knowing full well that New Yorkers still have the vivid memory of 9/11 etched in their minds."

Oops ...

Well, it did give some New York buildings to practice their evacuation plans. I wonder how much this shoot cost the American taxpayers? No problem though. There's plenty of money, right?

Someone introduce the Pentagon to Photoshop.

    So, do you think that BHO or anyone would even consider paying damages from doing this stupid idiotic stunt??

    And unfortunately - any penalties paid comes from tax money! Too bad it wouldn't come out of the appropriate people's pockets (like the ones who ordered it and OK'd it).

    Do better than what? I wouldn't think (or imply) that Mr. Obama had any personal knowledge of this incident before the fact but he is responsible for the pitiful lack of competence exhibited by his administration.

    It is obvious why it wasn't announced; you don't want some guy with an RPG to know that the president's plane (with or without the Prez on it) will be flying low on a specific date in a specific location. Can't really fault them for not announcing it.

    (2) Can you imagine the outcry if Bush did this? The media and the liberal scum would be besides themselves. "It's all a photo-op for Bush to use 9/11 blah blah." They would run stories of grieving widows from 9/11 to get their reaction to the flyover, they would talk to scared eyewitnesses, business owners who lost money that day, commissions would be formed and there would be demands for apologies and firings. No mention from the media on this now, though.

  • Use of Photoshop isn't allowed in a news photo
    And they would have to label it as a Photo Illustration to have it be a photo that could be handed out to the media.

    If they did use Photoshop, then people would have given them grief about that, as well, since it would make other photos handed out suspect (well, more than usual.)

    Two points to add:
    First, what kind of signal does this send to the American people about how serious the White House is taking this economic crisis, not to mention the alleged global warming catastrophe. If we can afford the cost and environmental impact of this joy ride, we must be in good shape.
    Secondly, the Big O's response does not say a lot for his leadership style. Anyone who has been in the military or any organization that emphasizes leadership knows that a true leader praises in public, but criticizes in private. Publicly blaming a subordinate is the mark of a poor or insecure leader and/or a narcissist.

    More Clinton retreads in the Administration of Change. Remember how they despised the military but loved having control of the "toys".

    A master politician, like a musician, has to have a good "ear". They have to know what their actions are going to sound like, and appear to be, to the public.

    Obama's big problem with this stunt is that it had a direct and visceral effect on New Yorkers. They will not soon forget the terror that they felt on 9/11.

    Now, to have your actions associated, on a deep level, to one of the most terrifiying moments for America's largest city is not an especially smart thing to do.

    No matter how much spinmasters try to make it appear to be one thing, it will BE the equivalent of "Obama=fear".

    Smooth move. Way to stay classy, Obama.

    To say that Air Force One did a fly over of NYC states President Obama was on that plane. NOT TRUE!

    We all know that "Bush lied/Children died", that there is no "war on terrorism", and we learned this primarily from the good liberal Democrats who live in Manhattan. In fact there is no terrorism to be fought in the first place. Isn't this the mantra of the Liberal, certainly those witty and knowledgeable folks who reside at the center of civilization, New York (or possibly San Francisco)? So why did these same folks get so bent out of shape over a low flying plane escorted by aggressive fighter jets?

    Frankly, it couldn't have happen to a nicer place, or to a more tolerant group of people. Keep up the good work, Mr. President!

    Who made that decision and why did they tell police to keep it quiet? Is it because they realized the kind of reaction they would get and did it anyway? Someone needs to lose their job and if they lost their pension on top of that....I wouldn't lose any sleep.
