MUSLIM PIRATES

These Islamic goons tried to board another American ship last night. They were repelled. In the meantime their activities continue pretty much unabated.

Question: Why are the pirate operating bases still untouched in Somalia? Well, that would be because Obama wants to talk. He wants to reward the piracy by pumping money into Somalia to solve their domestic problems. Wasn't there a movie about this nonsense some years ago? Something about a mouse that roared?

What others are saying

I stand corrected. In my defence, I hadn't had coffee yet. BTW, I understand now that the American ship didn't so much repel the pirates as evade them. Which is great, I had just pictured more Chuck-Norris-type action. Oh, well.
  • French Navy Makes Its Move!
The French Navy hunted down a pirate mother ship and took 11 pirates prisoner. Maybe it is time to reopen the infamous Île du Diable (Devil’s Island), which would make Gitmo look like a Caribbean resort. Viva la France!
  • Smelly Somalis
Drop molotov cocktails on their ragheads when they pull alongside. Just keep killing these punks. They'll get the message.
  • The only thing I'd urge caution on outright sinking the mother ships is the possibility of having seized crews on board.

Well, one idea I've heard being batted around is bringing back the Q-ship. Pirates roar up in their speedboats, on a container ship. 'Container' sides drop down to show a broadside of vulcan cannons while attack choppers lift off of a concealed flight deck. And the ship's security compliment gets ready to pick up 'visitors'.
  • Why are American's worried?
From what I can tell, the pirates usually take other nation's ships. Other nation's companies are the stupid ones paying ransoms. It appears to me that every American ship that pirates have attempted to board has fought back and repelled them. When they managed to get ONE SAILOR from us, we killed them and rescued our guy. How long until the pirates realize that they shouldn't attempt American ships?
  • Bombing pirates
I read the problem with bombing the pirates' towns or ships is that they have a few hundred hostages mixed in there somewhere. There is also fear that if angered, they will start killing hostages. In any case, the merchant ship should hire well-armed security forces. It is foolish to sail the high seas unless well armed.
  • @ DJP
The situation now is different than it was during the black hawk down fiasco. We were backing rivals to Aidid in a battle in which rivals were trying to seize power. Now, we have several allies we can work with. There are functioning autonomous governments in Somaliland and Puntland. While the UN-backed Transitional Federal Government is powerless, they can at least provide us with a relatively stable Mogadishu from which to operate. We can also try to get the Ethiopian peacekeepers back in, who just recently left.

Taking sides IS the solution. Those Al-Shabaab extremists controlling the south are too dangerous to be allowed to survive.
  • @ Foxy Rob
Americans are NOT the only ones repelling the pirates. India, Iran, most EU countries, Russia, and China have sent warships to the Gulf of Aden. I think that even Japan may break long-standing tradition (as did China) by sending warships to the region.

Some of these countries, including India (INDIA!) have succeeded in sinking pirate vessels.

I personally favor a multipronged strategy to deal with the piracy and it's root source.

Issue Letters of Marque and Reprisal, deploying an aircraft carrier to the Gulf of Aden as an added deterrent, targeted airstrikes against Al-Shabaab (Affiliate of Al-Qaeda who I think may be working with the pirates) bases, and providing incentives for Ethiopian peacekeepers to return.
  • Somalia: Before Blackhawk Down
There's a book out there titled, "Battle Ready" by Tom Clancy and Gen. Tony Zinni (ret), found at http://www.amazon.com/Battle-Ready-Study-Command-Clancy/dp/0399151761

Gen Zinni talks about his time leading the USMC in Somalia and what happened before, during, and after Blackhawk Down. It was something I never knew about (thank you government schools...). EXCELLENT insight. May just be pertinent to today.

Also: We used the USMC before to take care of a pirate problem; why not do so again?
  • Criticizing Obama?
How can you criticize Obama? Until this weekend, no president has done anything to counter these pirate attacks. You should be adoring Obama for his tough military stance. ARRRRRRRRRR
  • Somalia History -- my thoughts on the problem
Does anyone remember 1992 - 93? Problem with Somalia is that everyone is fighting everyone else and there isn't a central government of any sorts to even talk to. If Obama trys to talk to any (so called) leader it will look like he is taking sides and we will end up in a nasty conflict again. I don't knwo that there is a solution - other then blowing up every pirate ship that sails from port .... but we've tried to talk and we've tried fighting - the Somalies are still killing each other and making it dangerous for the rest of the region --
  • I agree with Dark
Carpet bomb these cities all night, every night until the problems stop. If the "pirates" relocate. Move right with them. The average citizen will quickly tire despite the money coming in.
  • Do pirates have bases?
Do pirates even have bases? They seem pretty informally organized to me.
  • Get some real security for these merchant boats
No, not the American military. The American military could handle the job with their eyes closed.
The problem is, their hands are bound by the big O and our Congress.

Unarmed merchant ships should hire mercenaries, Blackwater, or whatever. These pirates are inept, but are the only ones with guns. Time to even the playing field.
  • Thinking further....
Stationing an aircraft carrier off the coast of Somalia would be a good strategic move under the guise of fighting piracy. It can be leveraged as a show of strength against some of the rogue nations over there. It would offer great training/target practice for our fighter pilots as well.

An attacked vessel calls out for help, we use GPS to track the problem, scramble jets and take them out. Send the UN a bill for the efforts. Saudi Arabia would be super pissed that UN money would go to pay for American military services.
  • Ron Paul on the pirate situation...
As usual the man is miles ahead of everyone else...

    From Politico;

  • Americns VS pirates
Why is it only the Americans that are repelling the pirates? Rugged individualism? Lets face it, you've got to be at least one part "jerk" to be a real American. I'm not knocking it, I'm just saying. Give me a jerk over a pansy any day. I'd like to think I could be a real jerk if I needed to.
  • Solution
Why are we not using a convoy system to protect the merchant ships? One or two patrol vessels supported by reconnaissance aircraft should be able to handle any threat from these pirates. We are not talking about a sophisticated group of robbers; they only have light weapons and a few RPG grenade launchers (effective up to 200-500 meters depending on the warhead). This is nothing a patrol vessel with 20-mm or 30-mm chain guns could not easily handle. Each convoy has an exclusionary zone around it that any unauthorized vessel entered is first warned and then sunk. This is not a difficult problem to solve if you have the political will to do what is necessary. This type of operation is more suited for a Coast Guard cutter and not a more sophisticated navel destroyer. Anyone else notice that the two American merchant vessels attacked were carrying humanitarian supplies for Somalia.
  • WHY?
Why aren't we talking about EX-pirates yet?
  • Somali Pirates
Deploy some BUFFs and resurrect Linebacker/Arclight bombing campaign on two of the villages that dispatch these pirates. Moonscape a couple of square miles or so would go a long way to deter the rest of their ilk.
  • Pirates
OK Obama is not all wrong helping Somalia treats the ailment not the symptom, this is the right approach.

However, we need to solve the symptom as well. For U.S. ships post 10 Marines and if anyone fires on the ship blow them out of the water. We offer the same service (for a fee) to other nation's ships. Problem gets solved quickly.
  • Somali Pirates
I remember when Reagan sent FB-111s from England to Libya to bomb Qaddafi's home after the German Disco bombing was traced back to Libya. His infant son was killed.

When I heard the news on the radio I jumped up and pumped my fists in the air. "Finally, a President with kahonies!"

Qaddafi got his wake-up call, and he got out of the terrorism business pronto.

Time to send some more bombs to Africa. The only thing these people understand is strength. As long as think they're stronger than we are, they will continue.

Level some Somali pirate bases, sink as many pirate ships as you can: they'll get the message.

  • Muslim Pirates
The coast of Somalia is a pretty large area. A carrier task force would be helpful but tasking requires them elsewhere. However, I think it is time that the new Sea Fighter makes an appearance off the Somali coast. This ship is capable of 50+ knots when the impellers are kicked on and uses high efficiency diesel engines when cruising. This ship can launch rhib boats without stopping and carry helicopters. This sounds like the perfect mission for this ship.
  • Just wondering
How far off the shore can pirates effectively work?
  • No Kidding!
If the associated press can snap pictures of these Muslim goons shooting around the ocean with a camera, why aren't we or other countries shooting these Muslim goons with a "name your favorite weapon here."

No one can even claim the pirates are "blending" in with civilians. They're floating and we're (NATO members?) not shooting. Fish in a barrel comes to mind.
  • Somali Pirates
News keeps stating these boats are launched from a "Mother Ship." Can't be that hard to find. For crying out loud, find that ship and blow it out of the water.
  • Further clarification
Not just Muslim Pirates but African Muslim Pirates.

    Let's be specific.
  • Quit worring about the Somali pirates
and worry about the pirates in Washington DC!
