I just love this. College students are flocking to "green" fields of study. They're listening to the siren call of Barack Obama and the environmental crowd and they're using their parent's money and four or five years of their lives to prepare themselves for "green" jobs. I can see this one coming. In about eight years these fools will be out there handing shopping carts to Wal-Mart shoppers and wondering where the hell their "green job" is. This is going to be wonderful stuff. They'll show up at some job interview somewhere and they'll be asked "What was your major at State U?" "Green studies!" they'll answer .. .and the interview will be over. You just have to love this. Resumes with "green studies" entries on them being tossed in the trash cans. Oh man, this is gonna be great!

What others are saying

  • Green Jobs
Sounds like the ranting of another conservative who thinks the only good job is in the stinking military or the fucking pentagon. To bad 911 did blow the pentagon to smithereens.
  • Just too soon ... NOT
"We've actually seen this before. In the late 70's and early 80's everyone was predicting a huge explosion in IT jobs (sorry, it was just known as ‘computer programming’ back then). Sometimes it seemed that half the population of the college I was going to was shifting their major from whatever to ‘computer programming.’ Four years later, no jobs."

Jeez, that’s funny. I got my degree in Computer Science in the late ‘70s and I had job offers up the wazoo in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s. I tripled my salary in my first five years out of school. There actually was an explosion of IT jobs (and no, it is NOT known as “computer programming”). I don’t know what colleges the people you knew went to, but the only places I’ve ever heard of that gave a degree in “computer programming” were tech schools like DeVry.

check out what a university study from Spain has reported about the economic effect of an aggressive "green" policy.
    Universidad Rey Juan Carlos
    Ph.D. Gabriel Calzada Alvarez.
They calculate an average of 2 job losses for each job gained by going green.
  • your wrinkled white butt?
That's nearly as bad as Maxine's thong in a wad.
  • Bad Visual
It was very hard to read what Neal wrote with a visual of his wrinkled white butt in my head. I think I'm gonna be sick.

The unemployment line isn't just for Philosophy majors anymore.
  • Green Fields of Study
My Son is studying ecology at UNC, he has taken some of their hardest math and physics courses, along with chemistry and Italian. He works part time surveying streams and counting bugs for ten bucks an hour. Considering the coming water shortages, I can imagine the demand for someone like him.
  • Laughable
What will be even better is the ones with 'Green' degrees and absolutely no job experience. You know, parents paid for everything their entire life. Never had to earn money for a car, gas, or insurance. Joined a frat or sorority and partied during college. Never worked a day in their life - you know the type.

That reminds me of the college graduate who couldn't find a job and finally gave in to working at a restaurant. It was closing time and the owner told their new employee to mop the floor. The newbie protested, "But I am a college graduate!". The owner promptly apologized and said, "Let me show you how."

Not to worry though... I am sure there is a government union who will welcome them with open arms.
  • People get jobs regardless
Since when have majors matter except for some professional fields like engineering? If this is where jobs are going to be, then there is nothing wrong if that is what you want to do. If republicans focused more on the environment than christianity then they might have had some more people representing them in DC this term.
  • Resumes
Now, now, let us be fair. The resumes won't be thrown in the trash!

They'll be put in the recycling bin!
  • Wait a minute...
    They actually GET an interview?

When I applied for my job I had to have at least some of the right qualifications BEFORE I got called for an interview.

These schmucks won't even make it that far.
  • Don't look at me
Hey don't look at me I'm a CJ major, and a Libertarian, the level of liberalism on my campus drives me nuts!
  • "green studies"
Another worthless degree, to be added to all the other worthless ones that end with "studies".
  • Obama and the Green Economy
Obama made much out ot the notion of creating "millions of good paying jobs" in the promised new "Green Economy" during his campaign. He and his administration now seem bent on "going green" with a kind of religious zeal with no regard to the consequences of such a move. While its true that some jobs will be created in the term as a result of government spending at least in the medium term, the real question is at what cost? As noted in Nealz Nuze yesterday, a recent Madrid based study took a look at the Spanish experience with alternate energy sources and finds the opportunity costs for so called "green jobs" wanting.

The author of the Madrid study, Gabriel Calzada, showed that, ".. For every new position that depends on energy price supports, at least 2.2 jobs in other industries will disappear." How's that for a new green jobs program slogan? Wait, It gets better... How about the fact that "..The premiums paid for solar, biomass, wave and wind power - - which are charged to consumers in their bills -- translated into a $774,000 cost for each Spanish “green job” created since 2000, noted the author" Why not just mail a check for ~$750K to each prospective employee and call it even? Folks, you can't make this stuff up.

All this type spending for a notion, that is scientifically unsubstantiated, that man-made CO2 is the primary cause of so-called "global warming". For one to believe in it one must believe in three basic criteria, first that "global warming" is real, second that it is caused by man's activities, and lastly that it will have catastrophic effects on the earth and on mankind.

That's a tall order for one that has any kind of scientific bent. Fortunately for those that are proponents of this notion, their fervent beliefs and not science serves as the basis for a "virtual religion", one that has morphed into that wonderfully nebulous term called "climate change".

These new climate religionists ignore any evidence that does not fit their orthodoxy, specifically any relationship of the earth's warming to the sun's activities. They completely ignore the fact the sun, in the last few years, has been in its quiet modest in the last ~100 yrs, with virtually no sunspots even today. The sun's current "relatively low output" correlates very well with the world's record cold temperatures and record snowfall in the last few years.

When it comes to so called global warming, it really still is pretty much all about that big yellow thing in the sky.

  • "resumes tossed in the trash can..."
How ironic that because of their "green studies" degrees their resumes will be contributing to paper waste and land fills!
  • Just too soon . . .
Oh, those jobs will eventually be there, just not in any time span useful to those going to college now.

We've actually seen this before. In the late 70's and early 80's everyone was predicting a huge explosion in IT jobs (sorry, it was just known as "computer programming" back then). Sometimes it seemed that half the population of the college I was going to was shifting their major from whatever to "computer programming." Four years later, no jobs. When the explosion in jobs actually occurred several years later (the early 90's), these folks found that their degrees were stale and they needed just as much school as someone who got a straight science or math degree to catch up.

In the meantime, they had been working low paying and/or menial jbs to get by, where those who had straight degrees were working better jobs.

Take the good advice given below. Don't get a specialized "green" degree, get a science or math degree.
  • How is it green
How can "green studies" truly be a "green" field of study. If your resume is thrown away by all your possible employers, isn't that creating more waste and cutting down more trees? If you want a "green" field, become a botanist.
  • These poor kids...
....investing huge amounts of money on an absolute scam. Why won't these poor bastards read some research from some people who oppose this stuff...and actually consider sun activity to be a factor. *sigh*
  • SPEA
Indiana University already has a well known program along these lines. It is the "School of Public & Environmental Affairs", or SPEA for short.

There are various alternatives to the official accronym including:

School of Partying and Easy A's
    Stupid People's Employment Agency
  • The Green Studies Scam
A green studies degree will be as worthless as ethnic studies, women's studies and sociology degrees. How useful will it be to the proud owner when the next ice age is upon us?
  • Hilarious, but these kids a freaking stupid and insane
If these kids really wanted to make a difference they would get involved in getting a degree in some type of science or engineering field. I received my degree in chemistry and I have numerous options of employment to choose from. What a bunch of insane, crazy, messiah followers. Next, they will blame everyone but themselves when they can't land a job.
  • Government jobs
Come on Neal. You know these people will just end up with government jobs. There is no way the private sector is going to hire people with no useful business skills.

It also doesn't help that none of these student's parents are stepping up to the plate to give their kids a little something called a 'reality check'. Fortunately I am one of those parents that raised someone who will be an achiever and know that they will get out of college in a couple years with skills that will lead to a promising future.
  • hmmm
Unsustainable jobs for "sustainable" energy. Government at work.
  • hmmm

  • Green Diplomas
I got their green job......mowing my yard!!
  • Get a Better Degree
I am a civil engineer who has been working a plethra of "Green" type jobs. From Geothermal Energy to a Ethanol Refinery to a Solar plant. These are up and coming right now. But if anyone reading this is considering getting a "green" degree let me give you some advice. Get a degree in Chemical, Mechanical, or Civil/Environmental engineering. You can use these degrees to get into the "green" field but if there is no opportunity there for you you can easily switch over to another industry. Please don't pigeon hole yourself with a "green" degree. Be flexible.
  • Green Studies
I went to college in the '60s, studied ecology so I could end pollution and make the world better. About a year later, I found a job inspecting garbage dumps for the State board of health, making just under $4,000 a year and getting 6 cents a mile for driving my own car to do it. But I got a generous $6 a day for hotel and meals. The good thing was that I was alone out in the field, able to talk with the operators of these "dumps" (landfills, actually) as well as many industry representatives. What I learned was that instead of shutting down businesses, we needed to allow the free market to handle the situation. Two years later, I was waiting for the ink to dry on my new MBA in Finance, pulling down about $40K (still the '60s), and some years later, I got an engineering degree and have joined the evil rich who are going to pay all the tax surcharges. And I'm still conscious of the environment but I know how to let the market handle the problem. But if I had been able to get a job paying a sort-of huge government salary just trying to shut down places without listening to what they said, I wouldn't have learned what the market can do better than the government.
