HOW MUCH DID YOU PAY IN TAXES THIS YEAR?

Here we go again with THE TEST. Since today is the deadline for filing your taxes, walk up to a coworker and ask them how much income tax they paid for 2008. They won't know. There may be a few exceptions. VERY few. For the most part you're going to get some idiotic answer like "I didn't have to pay anything! I'm getting some back!" This is just exactly the way the government wants it. The whole idea of withholding was created to hide how much of your money the government takes out of your paycheck. Over the years many employers have tried to come up with some gimmick to illustrate the true tax burden to their employees, only to be shot down by the federal government. For instance, don't even THINK about trying to write a check to your employee for the full amount of their salary, and then requiring your employee to write a check payable to the federal government for their withholding and give that check to you to send on. You'll end up in jail in a heartbeat.

What others are saying

  • Taxed to the hilt
Payed $34,000 to the feds, $10,000 to Cal, plus 8.5% sales tax, 21% sales tax on gas, property tax, Medicare, SS tax, "fees" (aka tax) on phone, internet bills, and not to mention the "hidden tax" in the form of higher prices that a business will charge because of them getting taxed.

Tired of being the prison bitch to the government.
  • taxed
Paid out over 10K this year to the feds.
  • totally agree
As a former tax preparer, I agree exactly with what Boortz said re: people crowing 'I got a refund!' and not knowing what they paid. Clueless.

Also it was amazing to hear those who got the Earned Income Credit keep asking 'HOW much am I getting back?'...well honestly they were not getting anything BACK, they were getting a FREE handout, a gift from the people who PAY taxes. But that was never realized, after all we must protect their self-esteem at all costs!

Man, if only I ruled the world. Just gimme 5 minutes.
  • I thought I was paying a lot...
...when I saw $566 in federal taxes and a 3% effective tax rate. But seeing how much everyone else is paying makes me feel better. There are perks to having low income. The standard deduction is a larger percentage. I also get tax credit for paying into my Roth IRA. $566 is still too much though...
  • High Tax
To cover my tax Federal and State tax liability, the first 5.4 months of my work went all to the government. Blood suckers!
  • Paying to Steal
Well if you only count the Federal tax liability, then I paid around $8k. Add in the State, and its 12k. If you add in the FICA and Social Security tax money I'll never see again, then it was around $19k. I still owe $2k, and I've just been laid off. "change" - yay? Here's an idea, how about you don't get paid to be a politician? If we weren't paying these politicians through the nose to rob us blind, I bet it would cut spending by a decent chunk. "Here's $50, could please take my wallet and run up a huge debt on my credit cards that i'll never be able to pay off?"
  • Taxed to death
I'm a mechanic. 43% of my income goes to taxes. My grandfather was a mechanic and back in 1950 only 10% went to taxes. I'm getting close to the point where it doesn't pay to work.
  • HMMM
Sounds just like a line from the fairtax book.the only type of return anybody will ever see for taxes paid is an illegal workforce coming to save them by way of liberating them of their tax dollars courtesy of the republicrats inc..keep working america those whom do not work rely on youre generosity..
  • Easter Surprise
After paying our quarterly self-employment taxes last year, and after hearing that decreasing insurance reimbursements and increasing government paperwork for physicians will have me working 60 hours a week for $50,000 in income this year - a 70% pay cut vs. last year...we get informed we owe ANOTHER $32,000 in taxes by next week. It warms my heart to know that I'm paying more taxes to assuage the guilt of the college-age yuppie trust-funders, and welfare leeches, who elected our current leader. Too bad none of them run a small business (dealing meth on the side doesn't count - no taxes or paperwork), or pay income taxes, since they mostly live off trusts or have taxes quietly deducted from their pay. So, how do you pay $32,000 in taxes when you're going to only earn $50,000 during the coming year?
  • Not so sure this is a legitimate question
I read this this morning, and while I agree with you that withholding is bad and most people don't know what they're actually paying to the IRS, I don't think this is a fair question to ask someone. Basically it's the same as asking someone how much money they made during the year. Even if you can't get the exact amount due to deductions, etc., you can get a general idea about someone's salary if you know their total federal tax bill. So really, while I agree with your point, please don't go around asking people this or telling people how much you paid in taxes. It'll just make you look like an ass.
  • Total Bill
    My total bill was 11526.99
The guy that sits next to me made off with about 400 of that...
  • None?
Unbelievably, a co-worker who I think of as pretty intelligent, even though she is a flaming liberal, said "I don't pay taxes, I get money back every year."

If they would do away with withholding and employees had to write a check every year or every quarter, we'd have the Fair Tax in no time!
  • Taxes
An additional $8,400 paid today bringing the total to $99,181 to federal. I am beyond incensed
  • Taxes
For those of us who are small business owners that employ others, we know EXACTLY HOW MUCH I PAID IN TAXES. Just wrote a big check for 2008 as well as the 2009 first quarter estimate. Makes me sick.
  • everyone is still under quoting
I think everyone is still under quoting how much they paid in federal taxes, did they forget about the embedded taxes on the items they bought, I roughly put it at 21% of embedded federal. So after doing the math, with all the federal taxes taken from my pay, and then all the items I’ve bought, I am currently paying 48% of my income to the federal government in one way or another
  • Avg for last 10 years
For the last 10 years I've averaged PAYING about $350K a year in income taxes. In 2006 alone, I had to WRITE A CHECK for over $2.8M. This was from sale of a company that took six years to mature, during which time I made very little. It was physically painful, and I cried for a week. I paid not only my "fair share" (total collected divided by number of taxpayers), but that of 270 leeches who paid not one dime (but got LOTS of services).

Obviously, I have now fled the country with my ability to create wealth and jobs. They appreciate me over here.
  • Taxes "Paid"
Actually Neal, I didn't "pay" taxes... they were "confiscated" by "da gubment"

    Federal... $18,445 (+ $6,324 SS & $2,104 Medicare)

    Arizona... $2,775
  • er: hugos ghost
Translation: McDonalds sent his w2 to his Mom's house and when he opened it, it said $9.35 Federal and .63 cents State. Does that mean he gets a check back?
  • Feels like a lot on the low end too.
Can't say I made much, about $15.5K for the year, but for federal and everything else they took $2.1K.
  • Response
Let's just say that I work one day a week just to meet my federal tax burden.
  • thanx suckers!
I just want to thank you for paying my taxes for me...and another thing...your wasting your time going to protest something you have no control over. Go watch the Braves play they need your support more!
  • taxes
    Just a hair under 20,000
  • lotta dough
    grossed $13,000,000.

    15 trucks
    21 empolyees

    i got mugged
  • My Taxes
I paid $17,596 in state income taxes and $81,837 in federal. I paid more last year but I made more in 2007.
  • F*CK the GOV'T
$22k to the Fed (plus another $10k of so in FICA we will never see) and $10k to the State - that's $40k in income taxes alone. I guess i am rich. Funny thing, i don't feel rich.

See ya'll tonight at the rally at the capitol. Be there!
  • Way too much
    I paid:
    $81,837 federal and $17,596 state.
This is actually less than last year becuase I didnt make quite as much in 2007.
  • Who's Missing?
Interesting, I don't see any of the usual lib suspects posting on this subject but they are all over the ones demanding we fork over more out of "fairness". Is it because they are the ones who are the recipients of our government's benevolent largesse because they are in the bottom 50% of income earners?
  • I know...
...but all of the people I know are too polite to ask me.
  • 32500 + 8700 + 6600 + ???
Oops. I forgot to include my share of SS and Medicare taxes. Looks like I paid $41200 to the feds and $6600 to the state. This still excludes property taxes, vehicle taxes, sales taxes, embedded taxes, gas taxes, beer taxes, user fees, etc. $41200--that's at least one really nice, new Ford pickup truck I won't be buying now.
  • taxes (what else on the 15th?)
Each year on April 15 I give all of my employees a separate sheet that shows the exact amount they paid in UE, FICA, Medicare, and Fed/State W/H. This is their contributions only and most are shocked to learn the amount.
  • Taxes
Chalk me up for 30,000, not including the various CT State income, property and other taxes. 90k doesn't go far in CT..
  • I don't want change, I want my money's worth!
We are in the top 1% of earners in this country. We own a business and are tied to the net profit. Last year, on top of paying on our salaried income, we wrote a check for an additional $158,000 to the IRS and $26,000 more to the State of Georgia. On top of that, we have been audited eleven times by every government outfit of thieving bureaUcrats you can think of, state, federal, immigration, etc,... since Katrina tore through the Gulf.
Though we are considered "rich" we live on a tight budget.
  • Quarterly Estimated Taxes
I'm an independent contractor therefore I hold out my own taxes and pay them quarterly. Last year I paid just over $11K in taxes. This year, the same. If everyone had to do what I have to do, this mini revolt would have happened long ago and we'd have shifted to the Fair Tax long ago too I imagine.
  • How much this year
$0 in State since I live and work in Texas. But Federal - OMG! Just over $47,000. I did get a $400 refund. What I paid in federal income taxes is double what I pay to send my kid to a school that is NOT run by the government!
  • TAXES
I paid $30,000 federal and $15,000 in FICA/MEDICARE taxes for a whopping 40% of my earnings
  • @Andy Senn
Dear Andy, are you sure you want to come to Texas? We have 2.5%-3.5% property tax and 8.25% sales tax. The hefty property tax and abundant land keeps your property from appreciating wildly, so don't expect to make a killing in real estate here.
  • Taxes paid
My wife and I filing jointly
    $40k + to the feds
$17k there abouts to the state
  • 32500 + 6600 + ???
$32500 in federal taxes and $6600 in state income taxes. This excludes property taxes, vehicle taxes, sales taxes, embedded taxes, gas taxes, beer taxes, user fees, etc.
  • My God
I made a little over 60k last year. That's working 348 days last year. I paid over 15k in taxes and still had to pay the great state of WV more money. I had some health issues in the family and basically I broke even, no new cars or anything. Just groceries and a house is all I could afford this past year. The good news is that I work 2 full time jobs so I get about 20 dollars a week with the Obama weekly chores allowance. I can finally take a vacation in another couple of years and afford some worms to go fishing with. Until then I'll keep pushing out a hundred hours a week and pay for somebodies inner city housing in the barrio.
  • You are all patriots!
Because paying your taxes is patriotic. The more you rich people pay, the more patriotic you are!

Also, none of you will be considered for any cabinet positions, as none of you have apparently cheated on your taxes.

The way I see it, paying your taxes is patriotic, but cheating is smart!
  • Who cares Hugo
Sorry, but he said co-workers. That means you have to work. Crawl back in bed, tool.
  • D'oh!
Half of my wife's part time work was considered "self employed" this year... I've never had to deal with that before, and got hit with an additional $3k (2500 fed/500 state) on top of the $18k I'd already paid...

    D'oh!
  • Taxes paid this year
    Federal Income Tax: $17,898.00
    GA State Income Tax: $4,711.00

All because I am a single achiever, now looking for a career in Texas!
  • Tax transparency
Neal, at least for those paid by direct deposit, how about modifying payroll systems to generate two transactions - one a credit for full pay minus non-tax deductions, and the second a debit for all taxes? At least employees would see the transactions on their checking statements and not just on the payroll stub.
  • income tax
    $8200.

    w00t
  • 30,000
Between myself and my fiancée... thirty grand in state and federal taxes. Together, we got back about four thousand. Happy to get that back, but I'd prefer it if we only had to pay four grand a year and could keep the other twenty eight for ourselves.
  • working people
isn't obama gonna give it back to the working people? i work, so i figure i'm getting it back. oh wait, i wear a dress shirt to 'work', so i guess that means i'm not a working person.

$22k in taxes this year - but the best part is not the actual amount, but the fact that i'm in the 25% (or maybe 28%) bracket, but only paid 12% effective. suck it, IRS.
  • Taxes
I am ashamed to admit that I would have to look it up even though I just did my return a couple days ago.

I didn't want to dwell on how much the government STOLE from me.
  • Taxes
My wife and I paid about $15,000 this year. Because we got married a year ago, the Feds withheld too much. I've already told her we are only using that money to pay off existing debts, NOT shop for "new stuff".
  • First Time Owing
On top of the several thousand dollars that was withheld during the year, I have to fork out another $6,175 to the imperial federal govt and $673 to the state of Georgia.

    Nice.
  • Rude people
If one of my co-workers walked up to me and asked me how much tax I paid, I would tell them to mind their own frakking business. Not everybody is a rude blowhard like you, Neal.
  • Standard deduction
I paid the standard single deduction of $8950. The $500+ I overpaid was an intrest free loan to the government. I needed that money this past year.
  • Didn't pay a dime, I got some back!
No, but seriously, I gave the government a $3500 short-term interest-free loan. All in all, I think I paid $20k in federal. Down here in FL, though, we don't have state income tax or ad valorem tax. Although our property taxes are disgusting.

Best part is I loved pissing away half my year-end bonus in tax. Gotta love that.
  • I didn't pay anything
A lot of my income was hacked by a government worm and passed out to even more government leeches.
  • taxes paid
I'll admit I didn't have this memorized; I completed my taxes in January. However, I keep records that I can easily reference:

    Income was about $73,000

    Federal: $4,191
    State: $1,439
    Soc. Security: $4,717
    Medicare: $1,103

In all, not too bad, but as many have said, this isn't counting all of the sales taxes and what-not I paid throughout the year. We actually paid much more and got a refund. We're considering changing our withholding to even that out more, as we are tired of giving the gov't an interest-free loan. Not to mention the fact that we live in Arizona, and it's just a matter of time before this state follows California's lead and begins to delay refunds.

By the way, my sister-in-law, a doctor a year out of med school and her husband, a lawyer (in practice for a little over two years) paid about $75,000 in taxes last year, and they expect to pay much more this year. They don't make as much as you'd think, especially when you factor in her student loans. Yet, they are exactly the people that others are clammoring for to pay their "fair share." They could literally support an entire family (or two) for a year on the money they paid out last year. How many families is the government supporting with that money???
  • 41,541
    State: 13,214
    Federal: 28,327

I'm glad my wife worked this year so her entire salary could take care of our tax liability.
  • Oops... amend that: $48,000
I forgot to add in property tax ($6000), FICA ($6000), Medicare ($2000), and sales tax (about $6000).
  • How much tax
My *tax liability* was in the neighborhood of $28,000. I *paid"* about $25,500 through withholding, so I *owe* another $2500, which I begrudgingly sent along with my 4868. I think Neal's looking for the TWENTY-EIGHT THOUSAND DOLLAR number, which coincidentally is as much as my gross salary the first year I was employed out of college.
  • Taxes.
From the return (all figures joint):

Gross Federal Income Tax Liability: $6,600
    Gross State: ($3,620)
    FICA: $4,640
    Medi: $1,220.

Of course, some of this is skewed because of various deductions and credits. PIA.
  • my tax
The wife and I paid $29,919 in taxes this year. This does not include sales taxes and etc. The sad thing is we don't make that much money.
  • $33,000
which was apparently not enough...my next two pay checks will be going straight to the government so that they might give it to someone who didn't earn it and has no right to it.
  • True tax revolt
The way to have a true tax revolt (and this will NEVER happen) is to eliminate the withholding. Make EVERYBODY file quarterly taxes like businesses have to do. Once people see how much they are actually sending to the government, there will be millions with pitchforks and torches in D.C.
  • Knowing how much taxes we pay
Years ago I was taught a great lesson in taxes. While in college I ran a local bar and grill. Every payday, the owner would come in to pay the 8 or so employees. He would actually sit down, take each employee’s time card and calculate what they should receive for their pay based on the pay rate and the hours worked. Then he would count out that the gross pay in cash. Then, he would use the tax calculations to take back the cash required for taxes, social security, or any other charges. I still remember the first time he did it and the impact it made on me. Seeing the cash I was due and then watching him take it back was something I will never forget, and is why today, over 20 years later, I still know exactly how much I am forced to turn over to the government ever two weeks.
  • Taxes
The fed withheld $6,000 in taxes. Since I'm self-employed, I have to provide 100% of my SECA (social security deduction), not 50% like most folks.

Taking into consideration my tax levy, my SECA payments, and my withholding, I still owed the fed $400. Even if I had gotten $1,000 back, I would have been paying over $5,000 in money that I never saw - withholding.

    -
  • Taxes
Well, I had the 'privelege' of paying out almost $900 in addition to the amount that had been withheld from my paychecks throughout the year! Yaaaaay!
  • $24,000...more or less
That's my federal and state income tax. Note that doesn't include payroll taxes, property taxes, vehicle excise taxes, sales taxes and probably a few dozen other taxes that aren't coming to mind at the moment.
  • Getting some back?
Hahahahahaha. This is my first year out of college, but because I am proactive and work a full time salaried job ON TOP OF owning my own business, I had to write an additional $8,000 in checks to the State and Federal government, on TOP of what was already withheld. And my small business was only operational since April, and only made real money since September! I make sure to tell everyone around me exactly what percentage of my income the government is taking from me because I am a small business owner... and not even in a high income tax bracket! Ridiculous. I am going to incorporate this year to get around some of that nonsense.
  • I didn't have to pay anything
Actually Neal, for a large and increasing percentage of the population "I didn't have to pay anything! I'm getting some back!" is now true, as they receive tax 'credits' and have no income tax liability.
