The Alabama legislature has decided that they have nothing else left to do. All of Obama's stimulus money has been spent. All local Little League baseball teams have been congratulated. So now they are moving on to Miss California. The House approved a resolution praising Miss California Carrie Prejean for speaking out against gay marriage.

Now there is a great use of your tax dollars. Sure am glad there are no more pressing issues in Alabamastan. It's not that I disagree with the resolution, it's just that there are more pressing issues to deal with. Also .. the resolution should have said something about aftermarket equipment.

This story is useless without video, right?

What others are saying

  • Jay Love
If you read the news article, it said the resolution was by Rep. Jay Love. Just so everybody knows I live in Alabama and Rep. Love ran for the U.S. House here in my district and lost so not everyone here has his beliefs.
  • In Favor
I am absolutely in favor of Alabama's decision to praise Miss California. Also, I am absolutely in favor of Miss California's equipment and if the state of Alabama overlooked praising her equipment, then I volunteer to praise all of her equipment for them. Just to make up for their overlooking of her equipment in their praise, I volunteer to praise her equipment twice. As a matter of fact, I am prepared to do as much praising as necessary, no matter how much that might be and how many hours it might take...
  • Miss Ca
    Alabama Legislators
Well, the legislators are either going to be passing silly resolutions at the Capitol or they're going to head back to do their sisters and cousins like the rest of Alabama does. Seems like this is the lesser of the two evils.
By Steve @ 04/24/09 10:53:10 A Now here is a literal definition of "hate speech".How much you wanna bet he is a liberal?
  • Worthless
Drama? Why? They asked her a controversial question. And she gave her opinion. What a waste of time.

Alabama can do as it pleases. Every state is wasting their time with something mundane it seems. Until the people are willing to say enough is enough, who is surprised?
  • Miss America
Donald Trump needs to have his head examined for allowing that nut case to ask such a politically sensitive question. Fact is, from Maine to California the American people have shown that they understand why children, the family and marriage need to be nurtured and elevated.
I love Alabama! They may be low on eduction, but they are high on common sense.
  • She Can't Be Wrong
As hot as she is, Carrie cannot be wrong.....ever. Come on people. Even that fruit Perez should feel a little somethin' somethin' looking at her.

BTW, the media has not mentioned this much but Perez had his ideal answer in mind based on state law but I seriously doubt that he agreed with the voters in CA when they made their statement.
  • Poof the magic judge
She was certainly set up by Trump's pathetic poof. What's truly sad is that this has actually become a media event.
God help our country, we're spiraling out of control on all fronts.
  • @Josh: "alabama hotpocket"
Thanks to the wonder that is urbandictionary, I have added a new word to my vocabulary. Thanks!
  • I got my name from Neal
Living here in Alabama for a few years now, I have given up waiting for a sensible person to appear in the state legislature. They are much more concerned about padding their pocket to give a flying fig about the state. It's just as well they waste their time on this - - at least it's entertaining.

As for the gay marriage thing, I 'm of the Boortz school when it comes to personal relationships ("Kiss what you want."), but I see no compelling reason for the government to sanction marriage of any sort. If the government needs to monitor a personal contract between to people so that property is equitably distributed at the time of dissolution of that contract, fine. But don't call it marriage. Marriage is a social and religious construct. Separate them completely. Problem solved.

Oh, and by the way, until a few years ago (less than 5) Alabama still had an amendment to the state constitution that prohibited marriage between people of different races.

Welcome to Alabama. Please set your clocks back 100 years. Thank you.
  • Problem Solved
have gays marry only lesbians...problem solved!
  • This is stupid
She was set up, the question was inappropriate. The judge (jerk) KNEW this was an extremely hot potato subject and only asked to bring attention to his cause.

She was asked for her opinion. Agree or disagree, we all have our opinions and this should not be getting this much attention.
  • As much as I like her standing up to principle....
...but c'mon Alabama, is there anything else better to do?
  • if the south is so bad...
why the hell are there so many yankees in the south? oh yeah, high taxes and oppressive state legislatures. i'm in wilmington NC, moved up from alabama, and it's like little new york here. most of their time is spent whining about how much better the world is in new york, yet nobody ever seems to want to go back there. why is that? could it be that the south is not as bad as liberal yankees make us sound?
  • Stan GayBull
Rocket Scientist, don't even bother asking Stan GayBull if he knows whether or not the Alabama State Legislature is Democrat or not. He is focusing too much on the one part of this story that hits home with him. That's the fact that someone is taking up for her and against homosexuals.
  • Courage
Agree with her or not, it cannot be denied that what she did took real courage. She stood by her principles knowing that her remarks would be controversial and among some people very unpopular. Let's hear it for free speech and standing for something!
  • If she were my daughter, I'd ...
    ...
  • What the?
Why is this even a "controversy"? Question asked, question answered. Given that the majority of the people do not favor it, the "judge" should have expected that the answer might happen. Or maybe he did and wanted to stir the pot.
IF YOU THINK YOU ARE NOT GOING TO GET THE ANSWER YOU WANT,OR ARE GOING TO GET OFFENDED BY THE ANSWER, DON'T ASK IT.
  • Steve
I don't do my sister and cousins, and our legislators have a definite preference for furry animals, similar to your mom.
  • Prejean vs Hilton
Inappropriate question from an unqualified judge. Perez Hilton would have done better asking an important question such as "What do you think we as Americans can do to take back our country?"
  • @Stan Gable
You do realize that the Alabama legislature is run by the Democrats, right?
  • Marriage?
People continually point out the fact that there is no constitutional right to get married.

Why, then, do these same people suddenly feel the need to define marriage in the constitution? Or to "protect" marriage, as if the Semitic religions have some kind of oligopoly on what is a 'real' marriage or not?

Or why, pray tell, do they feel the need to legislate their religion's definition of marriage into the constitution, which was created primarily to LIMIT the power of government on citizens? There was a reason why the founders followed the KISS rule with the Constitution...

Marriage is an institution of religion, not the government. The government should have no say at all in who can marry or who cannot, as long as they are both consenting adults.

Shall I repeat it? There should be no legal restrictions on marriage between two consenting adults.

If a church doesn't want two gays or lesbians to be married, then that church shouldn't perform the service and instead tell them to go to some other church.

And if you don't like gay marriage, don't marry someone of your same gender. Problem solved.
  • Miss California
Was she ask her opinion or was she ask to declare the law on this sticky subject. She shouldn't have been ask this question.
Political opinions shouldn't determine these contests.
Just keep the controversial politics out of this type competition.
  • Miss CA Comment
I'll consent to her opinion being hate speech if Mario Armando Lavandeira's (that's Perez Hilton) remarks are labeled as hate speech against straight people.

And before anyone blasts me, I have very good friends that are gay, I wish them well, we agree to disagree, and then order pizza. I just prefer to have a beer with mine instead of a Cuervo Cosmotini.
  • Alabama Legislators
Well, the legislators are either going to be passing silly resolutions at the Capitol or they're going to head back to do their sisters and cousins like the rest of Alabama does. Seems like this is the lesser of the two evils.
  • Miss California
To use the words of Neal... Now there is a great use of taxpayer dollars. Debating gay marriages in the state capital.

Gawd!!! Please will everyone get back to doing some real work??

In another thought... why the hell does each state have to have a state song, bird, etc.... Please shut the hell up and try to make sure everyone can live with the freaking taxes you put us through.
  • MARRIAGE IS BETWEEN A MAN AND A WOMAN!
Well, fifty percent of the time anyway. The other fifty percent, the sacred institution fails because the sex stopped being good or the money ran out.

    Rofl.
  • Question TARA
What the hell did she say to discriminate against anyone? Just because she thinks a marriage should be between a man and a women? I didn't hear her wish them ill. So if she doesn't believe like you then she "discriminate against them"? Just asking.

BTW Lee Roy, you forgot! Hartsfield Airport offers daily flights. DELTA IS READY WHEN YOU ARE! (Not you Lee Roy)

    AND IT KEEPS GETTING FUNNIER!
  • this resolution is a good thing
I really don't care whether the resolution praises or condemns Ms. California, I'm just happy when the government is busy on trivial meaningless matters. This is actually a good thing. Therefore they have less time to figure out how to raise taxes or create "programs" that spend my tax dollars. So I say resolute away!
  • Miss CA
Tara...how is this discrimination? Show me where in the constitution it says anyone the right to marry. Obama is against gay marriage. Hillary is against gay marriage. Are they hateful and discriminatory? Gays can have all the benefits thru civil unions.
  • One thing you got wrong
It isn't Alabamastan, it has become generally accepted here that our local government is the "Tallibama"
  • attention northerners
take 285 to i-75 north, fill up with fuel every 200 miles. keep driving.
  • re: JamesJ
I am a Libertarian, thankyouverymuch, I don't believe in hating other people or denying them basic rights based on what they do in bed. I do think it's hateful to discriminate against gay and lesbian people. Ms. Prejean thinks it's okay to discriminate against them. The wonderful thing about America is that we can both hold our opinions without anything worse than a flamewar happening.
  • against 'Big Government'
Most of us are against 'Big Government, Josh. But when the voting public makes it clear that in California, at least, they don't want an amendment to redfine what constitutes marriage, don't throw tantrums and trash churches, go work within the system and win people over. If that many people voted for Prop 8, it seems that the California legislature kinda needs to listen there, ya know? As for Alabama, they're kind of like UFO's, an unexplained phenomonon. And Tara, what about Miss California's answer was hateful? It's not a trick question and you can use your 'lifeline'...
  • northern idiocy
you don't remember? now that's being northern for ya. (read idiots)
  • re:northerner
Umm...you came here because the weather sucked, the women look like men, and the food made the men look like ...well, women. If you want to crash on the South, just remember, we don't have to drive over 5 or 6 states and endless snowdrifts to get to the Florida beaches, we just have to dodge the snowbirds!
  • Alabama
I am continually embarassed by the actions of my state legislature. This is actually the only thing they have actually done besides make excuses and vote themselves a pay raise (65%).

The real scoop on the Alabama legislature is their failure to act on the issue of illegal immagration. This past week we had an incident. (Huntsville AL) An "alleged" illegal Felix Ortega crashed into another car while intoxicated. The two teens inside were trapped and burned to death. Felix is being charged with two counts of murder, but the real story is that he had prieviously been arrested multiple times and should have been in jail. His illegal status made it possible for him to stay out of jail. Our Huntsville mayor Tommy Battle seems to also have refused to do anything about this. Our police dept has admitted that it is powerless because it is constrained by government, and our local government likes to pass the buck up the chain to the federal level. This is the important stuff going on in Alabama and our state government passes this drivel.
  • zzzzzzzz
The Alabama legislature has decided that they have nothing else left to do.

The neal boortz has decided that they have no real news to do.
  • Are you shocked?
You cannot be surprised that a Republican government is going to waste money. Where is the bridge to nowhere? Well, we all know the money Palin took instead of doing that certainly didnt go to birth control pills.
  • why was that question even asked at a beauty pageant?
This kind of social moral question has no place in a beauty pagent. But, then again... beauty pagents really have no place in society either... But, with this new rising star, maybe we'll see a Palin/Prejean 2012 ticket. OOOh what fun!
  • Ridiculous
That's hilarious!!! So if they go to lunch and the food is really great are they going to enact a statewide praise bill for the restaurant they went to? Somebody needs to tell those fools that they need to worry about their own state citizens and not meaningless national news items.
  • Miss CA
Tara, how is her opinion hateful? Liberals are dilusional...and cowards
  • Praising Miss California
I prefer politicians working on silly resolutions rather than working on new way to screw the taxpayers,
  • Praising Miss California
When government spends time on silly resolutions, they cannot be thinking up new legislation to screw the taxpayers.
  • I really don't understand how anybody claiming to be against big government can also be against gay marriage. The government should not be able to tell two consenting adults what they can or can't do. My fellow conservatives are largely wrong on this one.
  • Dems still run it
You probably already know this, but Alabama's legislature is run by Democrats. Also, the "Ban Text While Driving" bill stalled, so they are bored.
  • Sweet Home...
Wow, and people make fun of me for being from Mississippi...great use of time and the taxpayer dollars 'Bama! As for Miss California, I give a rat's rear end about Miss USA or Miss America, but the Raging Queen, Ms. Hilton is an example( yet another )of how easy it is to fool enough people into believing you're a 'star'. Not to be confused with having talent, of course. The young lady( Miss Prejean ) didn't make a 'mean spirited' or 'hateful' comment. She answered the question. Don't like the answer, move on Perez. Last time I looked, this was still the United States and we do still have freedom of speech. Or does that only apply to people we agree with? I mean, look what the activists did in California when Prop 8 passed. I used to sympathize with their cause, they used up any good will with those childish outbursts. But Alabama, you're going the other direction. Ms.Garafolo would be proud of you! You make her look like a genius...or is it a savant?
  • Ms. CA
Must disagree with you on this one Neal. At least in one perspective. This Hilton flamer publicly lambasted her over and over again. The AL legislature publicly came to her defense. In all probability it
took less than 30 minutes for the AL
    legislature to push the resolution
    through. That was probably quick
compared to other items they consider.

So, taking them to task over this is no
more a waste of time than your blovating
    over general aviation.
  • isn't this just great...I guess the militant gays will be descending upon the state soon in protest.
  • Southern Idiocy
Yet another example of why the rest of us laugh at the South. Remind me why we wanted you back after you seceded.
  • Miss California
As a resident in good standing from Alabamastan, and as a substantial provider of taxes to support the Looter/parasite class in Alabamastan I applaud this decision since if they (Greedy politicians) are busy on resolutions there is less time spent plotting schemes to tax the wealthy. I suggest a new proclamation honoring the politicians for their time spent on this!
  • Miss CA/ Al Legislature
    Neal,
Oh, I dunno... taking a few a minutes to issue a formal "Up Yours" to the Sean Penn types seems worthwhile.
  • :::headdesk:::
Oh, I couldn't believe they did this. And of course it ended up on Fark. I am extremely embarrassed to live in this state right now. I mean, really, what business do Alabama state reps have praising some California girl's hateful opinion? I mean, she can have any opinion she wants, but she's in CALIFORNIA, what is the AL house doing praising her??? People puzzle and frighten me more and more every day.
  • Hotpocket
Has anyone ever heard of an "Alabama hotpocket"?(By the way, this is something only heterosexuals can do.)
