BLAME THE MEDIA ... I COULDN'T HELP MYSELF

This information came from an radio industry email overnight. We've learned something that we already knew. A lot of people out there have a rough time accepting responsibility for their own actions. If you spend too much ... if you run up a huge balance on your credit card ... it just must be somebody's else's fault, right?

It would seem that this is so. A new Harris Poll tells us that most - not just some, but most ... Americans believe the media is in some part responsible for the current economic crisis. And how would that be? Because the media, through advertising, made these poor pitiful people go out there and buy things they couldn't afford. Fifty-four percent of these Americans actually blame talk shows as having some responsibility.

Some specific findings from Harris:

  • Ad agencies took the brunt of the blame, with 66% of people saying they believe the agencies are somewhat responsible and 33% attributing complete or a great deal of responsibility.
  • Print media, including newspapers and magazines, are the next most culpable, with 59% of Americans pointing a finger at the medium.
  • Other media that got shares of the blame include news and information Web sites (56%), cable news programs (54%) and networks and local news programs (53%).

This brings smiles to those handsome leftist faces out there. The mantra of the left is that people cannot be held responsible for their actions and that government, therefore the government must be there to take care of them.

The more you think about this the more depressing it gets.

What others are saying

  • Responsibility
The mantra of the left is that people cannot be held responsible for their actions and that government, therefore the government must be there to take care of them.
This is the fundamental truth that undergirds most of what we complain about in the MSM.
  • 100 years ago, people did not spend themselves into debt. While I do believe in personal accountability, some blame must be placed on the agencies that have changed the way Americans think and act - i.e. public schools, media, etc.
  • Neal.. they have a point
there is a LOT of pressure from media to do, drive, act, wear certain things. I don't disagree in responsibility but think about it, our government schooled people aren't taught to be responsible, they are taught that if they overspend the government will bail you out.
  • The media tries to spread doom and gloom
While I don't think advertising is responsible, I do think the constant gloom spread by the media is making the situation worse.
  • media is partly responsible...
Because for 7 years of the Bush administration with record low unemployment they were telling us how the economy's in the tank and everything is awful. Eventually their wish came true.
  • Media Responsibility
I do blame the media in that we have heard about the recession we are in now starting in 2002. When we had a chance to head off the housing problem the media was unable to inform us because it would have cost them the election to admit that the Dems in Congress were failing to help correct the problem. The R's deserve some of the blame but it is important to put the blame belongs.
  • taking issue with those who media the blame?
Where have I heard this before? It sounds so familiar...wait! I got it. It was the biased media that made us all think Bush invaded the wrong country; it was the biased media who made us think Saddam wasn't a threat and didn't have WMD; it was the biased media who made us think Abu Ghraib was bad for our country; it was the biased media who made us think Bush failed to bring OsamaBL to justice.

Republicans are no more the party of personal responsibility than they are conservative.
  • Be responsible!
I can't see how anyone would truly believe that an ad in the media is at fault for spending habits of individuals. We should, however, talk about pharmaceutical industries and how they have the power to sway people into telling their doctors what meds to prescribe them. I think it opens the door to all kinds of problems including our health care status.
  • Well, they *are* partly responsible
Because they're shills for the party of irresponsibility. The MSM won't talk about the idiots who got themselves into needless trouble; they'll only show some pitiful broke mom.
  • Media blame for debt
I have debt and it is entirely my own fault. The trouble with these people blaming the media is that they have no clue how things work. They would be some of the loudest complainers when their favorite TV shows went off the air because non of the awful advertisers wanted to pay for them. I honestly think a lot of them are that ignorant (government schools...?).
  • Looking at it correctly
DMoney - I believe Neal is correctly interpreting these findings. I would agree with you if the findings showed that the news agencies received the most blame. Since it was the ad agenceies that received the brunt of the blame, it stands to reason that people are blaming the media for selling them stuff they can't afford.
  • Good point Tshirt
And occasionally I'll watch CSpan (boring as that can be). But every once in awhile... it can be very enlightening.
  • i blame the media
because it isn't news until it been over. whens the last time you've seen an argument on the floor of the house of representatives?
people don't want to see that. they want to see what brittany spears is doing. and the news goes along with that.

the media enjoys us being stupid, and easily controlled
  • The Media Didn't Cover the Tea Parties
People get themselves into debt, but the mainstream media has all but erased the protests out of existence by not covering them. So it's clear the media does have an extremely biased agenda against the protesters. ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, it should all be boycotted.
  • blame for debt....
One of coworkers has this mindset. He blames the Credit Card Companies and lending agencies for his debt. His reasoning is that they knew he didn't have the money to pay for the charges with his high credit limit or loans.

I pointed out the fact that he should have personal responsibility and be able to control his spending. He then accused me of being part of the establishment and holding down the man.

Can't win and sadly the same mentality that got us in this mess. Lost all respect for this coworker after the holding him down comment.
  • Wrong way to look at this
I think the people are blaming the media for taking a financial problem and turning it into a crisis using fear and negativity. I don't think they're blaming the media for their stupid spending habits.
  • Blame the media
I'd blame the media for causing a panic, but I could also blame congress for that. Peoples actions are they're own responsibility and they really shouldn't be pointing the finger.
  • Irresponsibility...
I'm reminded of an old adage that goes:

    Thinking + Responsibility = Independence.

Neither of the above factors is in even sparse supply these days...I'm afraid dependence (more specifically upon .gov) is only inevitable. .GOV knows this as well.
