... And so are the French!

You've heard this story by now, haven't you? The Somali Muslim pirates tried to board an Italian cruise ship far off the coast of Somalia. Well it seams that the Italians decided that they want to protect their cruise ships and their passengers .. so they went out and hired security teams.

Hmmmmmm.

Now where would you go for some good kick-ass security teams? Did they hire Blackwater (or whatever they're called now)? Nope. They hired Israelis. Every Italian cruise ship has a team of Israeli commando-types. When the Somali Muslim pirates approached firing. When they tried to put up a ladder to board the ship the Israelis opened fire. Pirates left. Hopefully some of them complete with bullet holes.

In the meantime ... several other ships were attacked by these Muslim pirates and some were taken hostage. The international community needs to declare this place a war zone and start blowing these goons out of the water.

  • Re: AT LEAST THE ITALIANS ARE TAKING THIS SERIOUSLY
It was no surprise. People are on the lookout for economic signs. Economic signs aren't normally paid attention to when things are boom, but are under the microscope when bust. DP, or Gross Domestic Product is a biggie. Home sales and house prices are also important, so are unemployment rates – and their declines have all slowed. Since most manufacturing (or production) has dipped, unemployment will continue to rise. (That's called Okun's Law, but its veracity is disputed.) Not many businesses have extra cash, or people for that matter. Most experts are predicting a recovery that will start soon, and complete by 2011. Despite the economic signs that the decline has slowed, many are out of work, and few cash loans can be had.
  • hiring the same pirates
If this piracy is all about money and not religion, I wonder if they could be hired to kill their fellow pirates and captains. "Bring me the severed left ear, right hand and identification of a dead pirate captain and I'll pay you $xxx........"
  • Piracy is not equal to terrorism.
What is the definition of terrorism? It is the intentional targeting of violence at civilians in order to achieve political goals.

Somali pirates are doing this for the money, not the politics. The still deserve a hunk of lead in the cranium, but they are not terrorists.
  • Piracy
No, I did not listen to the show today. However, it's amusing that pointing out two things that are still true - we don't know they were Muslim, and they (the pirates that were shot at yesterday) haven't used their religion in defense of piracy - gets me branded an "uninformed liberal idiot."

I highly doubt any of those pirates from yesterday have talked to Thomas Jefferson, so what he was told 200 years ago does not necessarily apply to the thought process of a handful of Somali pirates in April 2009.
  • Where go Pirates, so goeth ACLU
Easy now me lads 'n lasses...we shan't upset the scurvy dogs at the ACLU lest they be set upon ya like banshees! You just know that in some boardroom at an ACLU office, there are some sniveling little weasels hoping and praying for a chance to pounce on the CIA or another security agency. It's a chance to stick it to those awful folks who would harm a hair on a poor, hungry Pirate. After all, who are we to defend ourselves or anyone else against another form of 'alledged' terror. The Somalis Pirates are all victims...those freighters and tankers are just paying their fair share for the privelege of using their waters! Aaarrrrgghhh, me parrot just had a stroke!
  • What's even scarier than an Israeli commando?
    an Israeli commando with PMS.
  • Just another day at the office ...
That's what a co-worker (former member of Seal Team 6) said when he heard some Seals took out some pirates. What happened is what those gentlemen are trained, willing and able to do - visit extreme violence on those that would do harm to me. And I thank them very much.
  • Pirates
The British Navy termed their suppression of piracy in the Gulf of Aden during the 18th & 19th Centuries as applying the short rope (hanging) and the long bayonet (on the end of the Royal Marine muskets). It worked back then, and it will work today. Piracy is a crime, just as a home invasion, and the victim should be able to apply the modern principle of defense with a loaded shotgun. When it becomes too dangerous to be a pirate, piracy will end. Can pirates become more sophisticated? Yes they can, but not without assistance from the warlords. Eliminate these warlords and their capacity to leave the harbor to solve this “problem” (i.e. no boats). Yes, I do feel sorry for the real fishermen.
  • terrorist = muslim
To Rob Evans (uninformed liberal idiot): Not all muslims are terrorists, but in 2009 all terrorists are muslim.
  • Rob Evans
Did you listen to the show today? Ok, go look up Barbery Pirates and also what the Ambassador told Thomas Jefferson. YES they are Muslim and the Muslims think that is their duty. Are you seriously trying to take up for the extreme Muslim?

Anyone else love the irony of ISRAELI teams hired to stave off MUSLIM pirates!!!

Anyone know any Seals? Ask them what really happened.
  • bounty???
here's an ideer. git sum of the pie-rats on board and tell them they get so much per head if they pop other pie-rats. what a boomin' bizzniss (pun intended)that would be.

an armed force met with a superior armed force usually loses. a private armed force rotating from ship to ship for a certain period of time would cost the shipping companies less than what they would pay in ransom. they could be armed with 2 heavy automatic & 2 light automatic weapons, 4 assault rifles 2 shoulder fired rocket launchers. paid by the day or by the head? i'd opt for the day....

    DRIP don't return incumbent politicians
  • A great idea! Shoot a muslim pirate cruises!
I've always wanted to bag a Muslim pirate for my trophy room, why not arrange "Kill a Pirate" cruises and let recreational hunters have at it? People would pay serious money for a chance at this kind of recreational shooting.
  • Neal's comment on the air
Earlier today Neal, and I'm paraphrasing mind you, you commented that Thomas Jefferson and James Madison were told by a Muslim dignitary that piracy is acceptable to all non Muslims.

Maybe so, but in that part of the world money means just as much if not more than their religion.

Example: Around September of last year these same pirates captured a Saudi owned oil tanker for ransom.

Last I checked, Saudi's were Muslims too.
  • Isralies and El Al airlines
For YEARS before 9/11 I'd heard the stories of El Al Airlines never having had a hijacking or other terrorist incident in several decades of operation, and of US airlines paying El Al to tell how its done, but they didn't do it because it "costs too much," takes too much time and bothers passengers (as if the current TSA tactics don't bother passengers).

    Kudos to the Isralies?

And I don't do a whole lot of international shipping, but I want to figure out how I can ship something on an Italian boat. I want 'em to have my business.
  • Instead of shooting skeet off the fantail...
...US cruise ship passengers can shoot pirate launches with Mk 38 or twin .50 mounts. I wouldn't waste my money gambling on games of chance anyway, but I would go broke buying .50 cal or 25mm rounds.
Yippi-kai-yay, we're Americans, we can even launch our own boats and hunt them!
  • Pirate solution
Piracy is a business. When the cost of doing business is low, you have more entrepreneurs jumping into the ongoing pirate business.
When the cost of doing business becomes higher, when the barriers to entry are raised, the number of new pirates decreases.
The solution is to raise the cost of doing business.
The historically effective means of doing that was to kill the pirates, and put their head on a pike and leave it there until it rotted off. Think of it as a billboard. "Do this and die!"
If we allow piracy to prevail, then piracy will flourish. More people will be killed (people, as opposed to pirates.)
Civilization has always deemed pirates to be NOT criminals, deserving of a day in court, but enemies of humanity; deserving of hanging.
Let's bring back old school pirate prevention.
Shoot 'em. Hang 'em. Put their head on a pike. If we do it often enough, and leave the heads in a public space long enough, the pirate prospects might just be harder to recruit
  • Pirates = terrorists
"Terrorists" come in many colors and nationalities. Take 'em out anyway possible.
  • Piracy
Blackwater and other contractors may be the answer since our Constitution allows the US Government to issue letters of marque and reprisal against piracy (this was brought to my attention by Ron Paul). Blackwater already operates it own vessel equipped with a helicopter. The only problem is that our government, along with other European governments, does everything they can to hamper anyone from using lethal force (Belgians releasing pirates). We have already seen what happens when these pirates come up against the Indian Navy (sank a trawler being used as a “mother ship”) and I can’t wait until they run into the Chinese Navy.
  • I agree with Josh
Except for one thing, wrap them in bacon before tossing them overboard. Toss all but one overboard, and let the one go back and tell his comrades what he saw. There are only 3 responses to Islam, fight, submit, or die.
  • QUick and easy way to deal with pirates
no court system needed. When the pirates attack you do one of two things. Blow their boat out of the water or capture them and their boat. If the pirates are captured, you bring them aboard, sink their boat, tie their hands behind their back and take your boat a couple of hundred miles offshore. You then push the pirates into the ocean and let the sharks have them. When you start dealing with these muslim a-holes appropriately, then they will back down. muslims only understand one thing. Force. So give them something they understand.
  • "Muslim pirates"
First, you have no idea whether or not they were Muslims.

Second, unlike in cases of terrorism, pirates who are in fact Muslim don't claim their religion as a driving factor in their violence.

So going out of your way to refer to them as Muslims is as meaningless as pointing out that they are male.
  • Pirates - fighting back
I am glad to see some shipping companies finally taking the growing violence off the coast of Somali seriously. More armed merchant ships, along with coast guard vessels, will decrease the problem for only a short time. We have to deal with the home ports of these pirates and the Somali warlords that are enabling and encouraging these pirates. Piracy can only operate were there is no fear of retribution.

An often overlooked fact is that piracy has been surpassed in areas of the coast that are controlled by Islamic fundamentalist who are hostile to America, the Union of Islamic Courts, because it is contrary to Islamic law to take ransom except in times of war. It is flourishing, along with smuggling of refugees to Yemen, in Putland which is not under their control. Somali piracy is about the money and the not religion.
  • Faster Responce to a Pirate Attack...
    Ahoy Neal!

Here's a great opportunity to give our Preditor Drone pilots a little On the Job Training and target practice.

Our fine navy could launch one of these drones that can get to the cruise ship in distress far faster than can a naval vessel and could easily drop a HellFire Missle onto the deck of these pirate boats.

Hey, if a HellFire missle can take out a tank, it shouldn't have any problem with taking out a pirate's outboard motor boat.
  • Islam
Sorry, Mr. Boortz because these pirates are from Somalia does not make this a Islamic terrorist issue. Your broad brush statement that Islam allows piracy against others is not true, except in time of war. Do your home work 47th Surah of the Koran.
  • int'l community
When that captain was being held for 4 days, Neal ripped Obama and sarcastically wondered if he was waiting for UN approval before taking action. Ends up Obama was not -- ends up Obama was on the right side that day and we won. Now the Italians are also taking action to protect their own interests. Much like the US, the Italians are right to defend themselves against pirates. It's tempting to say nuke Somalia back to the stone age but it's more effective for us if we protect ourselves and let other countries protect themselves. Sorry, Bush fans, that means we won't be on the ground in Somalia anytime soon.
  • Pirates
Remember "Monty Python and the Holy Grail"? "Run away! Run Away!" I hope they crawled away bleeding.
  • ... And so are the French!
It's a sad day when the FRENCH are more willing to fight someone than we are.
  • Pirates
Every ship that goes through these dangerous waters should have armed security on board. Even though it would make for great video, they don't need anti-ship missiles, just some small arms to discourage the bad guys. The thugs in this story turned tail and ran when taking fire from handguns! Cowards!
  • great idea,subcontracted security
Hey ,it dosn't suprise me. The Italians haven't had a great military force since the Roman Legions, but even then their policy was to incorperate conqured foes into their ranks. The French on the other hand always let their diplomats fight their battles then sent in the French Foreign Legion to clean up the after mess, which were only allowed to be foreign nationals. So the idea of hired out protection is not new to either and the choice of Israelis for the job well, who better than them. I'm sure the UN will bitch about it and there will be plenty of feedback BS from the "Islamic" nations(like it really makes a difference to the pirate who's bullet kills him)The Israelis have been dealing with this type of shit for a long time and too bad their expertise isn't tolorated on the bigger stage of middle eastern politics. It might be a more peaceful world.
  • Shoot the pirates
I am glad the Israelis got in the story - well at least some stories.

Poor pirates. I can hear them now... "Oh snap! They shooting back! Retreat!"

I would imagine that the good guys had to shoot over their heads or something and not actually kill anybody. Muslims would be outraged - again.

Plus I read the good guys may have just had pistols they had to get out of a safe, probably against AK-47s smuggled into Somolia from America.

All the pirates are really good boys though.
  • Good Wording Neal
I am glad Neal said "The international community" because as the past tells us if we took the lead and started policing these waters the international community would simply let the US own it. Glad to see other nations step up for a change (Exception of the Israelis) they are hardcore with or without help.
